Hierarchical Object Recognition Using Libraries of Parameterized Model Sub-Parts

This thesis describes the development of a model-based vision system that exploits hierarchies of both object structure and object scale. The focus of the research is to use these hierarchies to achieve robust recognition based on effective organization and indexing schemes for model libraries. The goal of the system is to recognize parameterized instances of non-rigid model objects contained in a large knowledge base despite the presence of noise and occlusion. Robustness is achieved by developing a system that can recognize viewed objects that are scaled or mirror-image instances of the known models or that contain components sub-parts with different relative scaling, rotation, or translation than in models. The approach taken in this thesis is to develop an object shape representation that incorporates a component sub-part hierarchy- to allow for efficient and correct indexing into an automatically generated model library as well as for relative parameterization among sub-parts, and a scale hierarchy- to allow for a general to specific recognition procedure. After analysis of the issues and inherent tradeoffs in the recognition process, a system is implemented using a representation based on significant contour curvature changes and a recognition engine based on geometric constraints of feature properties. Examples of the system's performance are given, followed by an analysis of the results. In conclusion, the system's benefits and limitations are presented.

Poly-Si₁₋xGex Film Growth for Ni Germanosilicided Metal Gate

Scaling down of the CMOS technology requires thinner gate dielectric to maintain high performance. However, due to the depletion of poly-Si gate, it is difficult to reduce the gate thickness further especially for sub-65 nm CMOS generation. Fully silicidation metal gate (FUSI) is one of the most promising solutions. Furthermore, FUSI metal gate reduces gate-line sheet resistance, prevents boron penetration to channels, and has good process compatibility with high-k gate dielectric. Poly-SiGe gate technology is another solution because of its enhancement of boron activation and compatibility with the conventional CMOS process. Combination of these two technologies for the formation of fully germanosilicided metal gate makes the approach very attractive. In this paper, the deposition of undoped Poly-Si₁₋xGex (0 < x < 30% ) films onto SiO₂ in a low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) system is described. Detailed growth conditions and the characterization of the grown films are presented.

Room-temperature continuous-wave operation of GaInNAs/GaAs quantum dot laser with GaAsN barrier grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy

We present the results of GaInNAs/GaAs quantum dot structures with GaAsN barrier layers grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy. Extension of the emission wavelength of GaInNAs quantum dots by ~170nm was observed in samples with GaAsN barriers in place of GaAs. However, optimization of the GaAsN barrier layer thickness is necessary to avoid degradation in luminescence intensity and structural property of the GaInNAs dots. Lasers with GaInNAs quantum dots as active layer were fabricated and room-temperature continuous-wave lasing was observed for the first time. Lasing occurs via the ground state at ~1.2μm, with threshold current density of 2.1kA/cm[superscript 2] and maximum output power of 16mW. These results are significantly better than previously reported values for this quantum-dot system.

Transport of Sub-micron Aerosols in Bifurcations

The convective-diffusive transport of sub-micron aerosols in an oscillatory laminar flow within a 2-D single bifurcation is studied, using order-of-magnitude analysis and numerical simulation using a commercial software (FEMLAB®). Based on the similarity between momentum and mass transfer equations, various transient mass transport regimes are classified and scaled according to Strouhal and beta numbers. Results show that the mass transfer rate is highest at the carinal ridge and there is a phase-shift in diffusive transport time if the beta number is greater than one. It is also shown that diffusive mass transfer becomes independent of the oscillating outer flow if the Strouhal number is greater than one.

A review of sensor fusion techniques for underwater vehicle navigation

This work provides a general description of the multi sensor data fusion concept, along with a new classification of currently used sensor fusion techniques for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). Unlike previous proposals that focus the classification on the sensors involved in the fusion, we propose a synthetic approach that is focused on the techniques involved in the fusion and their applications in UUV navigation. We believe that our approach is better oriented towards the development of sensor fusion systems, since a sensor fusion architecture should be first of all focused on its goals and then on the fused sensors

Mapping sub-flows to p2mp LSPs

In previous work we proposed a multi-objective traffic engineering scheme (MHDB-S model) using different distribution trees to multicast several flows. In this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm to create multiple point-to-multipoint (p2mp) LSPs based on the optimum sub-flow values obtained with our MHDB-S model. Moreover, a general problem for supporting multicasting in MPLS networks is the lack of labels. To reduce the number of labels used, a label space reduction algorithm solution is also considered

Programming Principles: Super and Sub-classes

In this session we introduce inheritance - one of the cornerstone concepts of object oriented programming. We look at how to define super and sub-classes, how to maintain encapsulation using the super() constructor, and why it is useful to use substitution to hold references to sub-classes in references typed as their super-class.

User Experience (a hidden barrier) in OER

More Open Education Resources (OER) and learning environments are being created and starting to mature and there are a number of barriers to learning and creator participation. One often overlooked barrier that has been given less attention, especially within OERs, is user experience (UX). UX is the way a person feels about using a product, system or service. We are creatures with emotional needs and, in the rush to get great content open and available sometimes the usability, the wow factor and good design principles get left by the wayside. I will demonstrate ways to think about UX for your OER and learning environments and why this is an important factor in helping engage learners with our educational materials. ‘The real payoff comes when we can make that remarkability last. Credit Default Swaps (CDS) y Collateral Debt Obligation (CDO) derivados financieros responsables de la crisis sub-prime de 2008 en Estados Unidos y una guía para el desarrollo del mercado de derivados exóticos en Colombia

La crisis financiera hipotecaria de 2008 en la que se declaró en quiebra el banco de inversión Lehman Brothers, se desarrolló en un ambiente que contemplaba apalancamientos financieros excesivos y el uso de derivados financieros de crédito innovadores. Razón por la cual, a partir del estudio de caso de quiebra de este banco de inversión y el análisis de las causas y consecuencias del ambiente desregulatorio que surgió en Estados Unidos desde la década de los 30 hasta el 2000, se orienta la investigación a indagar sobre lo que sucede en términos regulatorios y empresariales en el mercado de valores colombiano y así lograr definir objetivos que permitan el crecimiento del mercado de derivados exóticos en Colombia bajo un marco de responsabilidad financiera y ética empresarial.

Revisión sistemática de la literatura: efecto de los rellenos inyectables en la región periorbitaria

Introducción: El conocimiento actual de la fisiopatología del envejecimiento periorbitario justifica la aplicación de materiales de relleno inyectables, dado que se enfocan en la restauración del volumen perdido en esta zona, convirtiéndose en una excelente alternativa a procedimientos quirúrgicos que remueven el tejido excedente. Sin embargo los efectos y la seguridad de esta naciente tendencia terapéutica aún no se sustentan en una sólida base científica. El objetivo de esta revisión es identificar el material de relleno inyectable más adecuado para el manejo de los defectos volumétricos estéticos de la región periorbitaria. Metodología: Se realizó una búsqueda exhaustiva de los artículos indexados publicados del 1º de enero de 2.000 al 30 de septiembre de 2.013, en diversas bases de datos electrónicas, se seleccionaron catorce publicaciones, se extrajo la información referente a datos demográficos, la intervención, el seguimiento y los desenlaces y se realizó un análisis de 14 estudios que cumplieron los criterios. Resultados: Todos los artículos incluidos poseían un bajo nivel de evidencia y del grado de recomendación. Todos los materiales de relleno se asociaron a altos niveles de satisfacción para el paciente, adecuada mejoría de la apariencia estética y similares efectos colaterales, el ácido hialurónico fue el material de relleno inyectable más utilizado en la región periorbitaria. Discusión: Los materiales de relleno inyectable mejoran los defectos volumétricos estéticos de la región periorbitaria pero es necesaria mayor evidencia para determinar el tipo relleno más apropiado para esta condición.

PTPN22 Association in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) with Respect to Individual Ancestry and Clinical Sub-Phenotypes

Protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 22 (PTPN22) is a negative regulator of T-cell activation associated with several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Missense rs2476601 is associated with SLE in individuals with European ancestry. Since the rs2476601 risk allele frequency differs dramatically across ethnicities, we assessed robustness of PTPN22 association with SLE and its clinical subphenotypes across four ethnically diverse populations. Ten SNPs were genotyped in 8220 SLE cases and 7369 controls from in European-Americans (EA), African-Americans (AA), Asians (AS), and Hispanics (HS). We performed imputation-based association followed by conditional analysis to identify independent associations. Significantly associated SNPs were tested for association with SLE clinical sub-phenotypes, including autoantibody profiles. Multiple testing was accounted for by using false discovery rate. We successfully imputed and tested allelic association for 107 SNPs within the PTPN22 region and detected evidence of ethnic-specific associations from EA and HS. In EA, the strongest association was at rs2476601 (P = 4.761029, OR = 1.40 (95% CI = 1.25–1.56)). Independent association with rs1217414 was also observed in EA, and both SNPs are correlated with increased European ancestry. For HS imputed intronic SNP, rs3765598, predicted to be a cis-eQTL, was associated (P = 0.007, OR = 0.79 and 95% CI = 0.67–0.94). No significant associations were observed in AA or AS. Case-only analysis using lupus-related clinical criteria revealed differences between EA SLE patients positive for moderate to high titers of IgG anti-cardiolipin (aCL IgG .20) versus negative aCL IgG at rs2476601 (P = 0.012, OR = 1.65). Association was reinforced when these cases were compared to controls (P = 2.761025, OR = 2.11). Our results validate that rs2476601 is the most significantly associated SNP in individuals with European ancestry. Additionally, rs1217414 and rs3765598 may be associated with SLE. Further studies are required to confirm the involvement of rs2476601 with aCL IgG.
