The article analyses the 'ordinary' violence of revolutionary politics, particularly acts of gendered and sexual violence that tend to be neglected in the face of the 'extraordinariness' of political terror. Focusing on the extreme left Naxalbari movement of West Bengal, it points to those morally ambiguous 'grey zones' that confound the rigid distinctions between victim and victimizer in insurrectionary politics. Public and private recollections of sexual and gender-based injuries by women activists point to the complex intermeshing of different forms of violence (everyday, political, structural, symbolic) across 'safe' and 'unsafe' spaces, 'public' and 'private' worlds, and communities of trust and those of betrayal. In making sense of these memories and their largely secret or 'untellable' nature, the article places sexual violence on a continuum of multiple and interrelated forces that are both overt and symbolic, and include a society's ways of mourning some forms of violence and silencing others. The idea of a continuum explores the 'greyness' of violence as the very object of anthropological inquiry.

1. Introduction Japanese Lesson Study first came to world-wide attention through Makoto Yoshida’s doctoral dissertation (Yoshida, 1999; Fernandez & Yoshida, 2004) and Stigler and Hiebert’s (1999) accounts of Lesson Study based on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). By 2004, Lesson Study was taking place in the USA in at least 32 states and 150 lesson study clusters.Lewis (2002) describes the Lesson Study Cycle as having four phases: goal-setting and planning – including the development of the Lesson Plan; teaching the “research lesson” – enabling the lesson observation; the post-lesson discussion; and the resulting consolidation of learning, which has many far-reaching consequences (see, for example, Lewis & Tsuchida, 1998). It could be said that research lessons make participants and observers think quite profoundly about specific and general aspects of teaching. In Japan, Lesson Study occurs across many curriculum areas, mainly at the elementary school level, and to a lesser extent junior secondary. In mathematics, the research lesson usually follows the typical lesson pattern for a Japanese “structured problem solving lesson”.Major characteristics of such lessons include: the hatsumon – the thought-provoking question or problem that students engage with and that is the key to students’ mathematical development and mathematical connections; kikan-shido – sometimes referred to as the “purposeful scanning” that takes place while students are working individually or in groups, which allows teachers not only to monitor students’ strategies but also to orchestrate their reports on their solutions in the neriage phase of the lesson; neriage – the “kneading” stage of alesson that allows students to compare, polish and refine solutions through the teacher’s orchestration and probing of student solutions; and matome — the summing up and careful review of students’ discussion in order to guide them to higher levels of mathematical sophistication (see, for example, Shimizu, 1999).

With the advent of semiconductor process and EDA tools technology, IC designers can integrate more functions. However, to reduce the demand of time-to-market and tackle the increasing complexity of SoC, the need of fast prototyping and testing is growing. Taking advantage of deep submicron technology, modern FPGAs provide a fast and low-cost prototyping with large logic resources and high performance. So the hardware is mapped onto an emulation platform based on FPGA that mimics the behaviour of SOC. In this paper we use FPGA as a system on chip which is then used for image compression by 2-D DCT respectively and proposed SoC for image compression using soft core Microblaze. The JPEG standard defines compression techniques for image data. As a consequence, it allows to store and transfer image data with considerably reduced demand for storage space and bandwidth. From the four processes provided in the JPEG standard, only one, the baseline process is widely used. Proposed SoC for JPEG compression has been implemented on FPGA Spartan-6 SP605 evaluation board using Xilinx platform studio, because field programmable gate array have reconfigurable hardware architecture. Hence the JPEG image with high speed and reduced size can be obtained at low risk and low power consumption of about 0.699W. The proposed SoC for image compression is evaluated at 83.33MHz on Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA.

ABSTRACTAveraging aggregation functions are valuable in building decision making and fuzzy logic systems and in handling uncertainty. Some interesting classes of averages are bivariate and not easily extended to the multivariate case. We propose a generic method for extending bivariate symmetric means to n-variate weighted means by recursively applying the specified bivariate mean in a binary tree construction. We prove that the resulting extension inherits many desirable properties of the base mean and design an efficient numerical algorithm by pruning the binary tree. We show that the proposed method is numerically competitive to the explicit analytical formulas and hence can be used in various computational intelligence systems which rely on aggregation functions.

In this paper, we propose a new approach to analyse the stability of a general family of nonlinear positive discrete time-delay systems. First, we introduce a new class of nonlinear positive discrete time-delay systems, which generalises some existing discrete time-delay systems. Second, through a new technique that relies on the comparison and mathematical induction method, we establish explicit criteria for stability and instability of the systems. Three numerical examples are given to illustrate the feasibility of the obtained results.

What’s behind the mistakes and difficulties that appear on the students to understand and study mathematics?are only related to the cognitive complexity of the content or such difficulties are also related to the possible ways to access the different mathematical objects? The mathematical activity generated in many students learning difficulties that are not manifested in cognitive processes related to other areas of knowledge. If something characterizes the processes of teaching and learning of mathematics is that, unlike what happens with the objects of study in the experimental sciences, the only way to access to them is through its different semiotic representations. The coordination among the different systems of representation that refer to the same mathematical concept, needs to move from one register to another (D’Amore, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006; Duval, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012; Godino, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2014; Kaput, 1989a, 1989b,1992, 1998; Radford, 1998, 2004a, 2004b, 2004c, 2006a, 2008,2009, 2011, 2013, 2014a). Therefore, the treatments that can be realized within a given register and the conversion of one register into another, play an essential role in the grasp of the object and mathematical concepts. Through this work with representations, students give meanings to the objects of study and are able to understand the underlying mathematical structures, which is the main educational interest of this issue...
