A Bienal do Vazio: análise comparativa das estratégias de tomada de posição dos jornais O Estado de S. Paulo e Jornal Semanal da 28ª Bienal de São Paulo

This paper proposes a comparative analysis of cultural critical, articles and reports related to the 28th International Biennial of Art of São Paulo published in the newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo and Jornal Semanal da 28ª Bienal de São Paulo, from October to December 2008. Specific aims of analysis are how an institution devoted, like Biennial, creates mechanisms to defend their choices and hegemonic position within the arts field and also to examine how this dedication can be demystified by critics from diffusion field not linked to the institution. For the study will be used the concepts of field, hierarchy of legitimacy and position of an agent developed by Pierre Bourdieu, as well as historical notions of Cultural Journalism and journalistic criticism

Revista o cruzeiro: a figura feminina em publicidades de sabonetes de 1949

This article aims at the application of semiotic theory of French line to soap advertisements publicized in the magazine O Cruzeiro in the year 1949. Our objective is to reconstruct the women’s figure present in these texts and to establish its relation to the persuasion of the reader who is led to acquire not only the products, but mainly the values hidden in the announced objects. From the theory we use the generative course of meaning, focusing on the discourse level and assimilating the consumption axiologies proposed by each advertisement. Finally, we intend to assimilate the standard behavior of that society post-Second World War.

Teorias dos sistemas, cultura e espaços rurais de reforma agrária

Fundamentals of Theoretical Ecology and the principles governing ecosystems are discussed in relation to the anthropological concept of culture. These principles have been formed along with the development of Ecology and the advancement of other sciences not necessarily biologically based, such as Mathematics and Physics. A deeper understanding of Ecology in interdisciplinary projects is important because it is both a holistic Science, encompassing several disciplines of the field of knowledge, as a Science, whose principles can be applied to any other science. Its origin and evolution differ from modern sciences that emerged from Renaissance, because, taking place at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, developing itself along with the theories of systemic thinking at the beginning of this century, Ecology inspired this new thinking, culminating with the emergence of General Systems Theory in search of a "transdisciplinar" unification proposed by today's New Science. By applying the System Theory to the analysis of the behaviors of the individual and of the group, it is possible to approach the Agrarian Reform in a more comprehensive way.

Esplenomegalia em cães: estudo retrospectivo

The aim of this study was to review the prevalence of canine splenic disorders by means of a retrospectiveanalysis of histological diagnosis after splenectomy. The results were confronted with laboratory findings, clinical signs and presence of cardiac arrhythmia and hemoperitoneum, in an attempt to establish the differentialdiagnosis of splenomegaly. One hundred and nine dogs assisted at the Veterinary Hospital of theSchool of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechny, University of São Paulo, were included in the retrospectivestudy, between 2002 and 2009. The average age was 10 years old ± 3, with no sexual predilection. Mixedbreed dogs was the most affected kind, and average weight was 22 kg ± 13. Overall, 52% (57/109) of dogswere splenectomized due to non-neoplastic diseases and 48% (52/109) to neoplastic diseases. Among thelatter, the most common diagnosis was hemangiosarcoma (28 dogs; 54%). Most frequent clinical signs includedanorexia, lethargy and vomiting. Results showed that dogs with low red blood cell count, low hematocritvalues and/or hemoperitoneum were more likely to have splenic malignant neoplasm. On the otherhand, sex, breed, size, age, cardiac arrhythmia and other laboratory parameters were not determining factorsin the differentiation of splenomegaly.

Comparação entre o Disease Activity Score-28 e o Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score na artrite idiopática juvenil

Introduction: the assessment of the activity of rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis is made by means of different tools, respectively DAS-28 and JADAS.Objective: To compare DAS-28 and JADAS with scores of 71, 27 and 10 joint counts in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.Method: A secondary analysis of a phase III placebo-controlled trial, testing safety and efficacy of abatacept was conducted in 8 patients with 178 assessment visits. Joint count scores for active and limited joints, physician's and parents'global assessment by 0-10 cm Visual Analog Scale, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate normalized to 0-10 scale, in all visits. The comparison among the activity indices in different observations was made through Anova or adjusted gamma model. The paired observations between DAS-28 and JADAS 71, 27 and 10, respectively, were analyzed by linear regression.Results: There were significant differences among individual measures, except for ESR, in the first four months of biological treatment, when five of the eight patients reached ACR-Pedi 30, with improvement. The indices of DAS-28, JADAS 71, 27 and 10 also showed significant difference during follow-up. Linear regression adjusted model between DAS-28 and JADAS resulted in mathematical formulas for conversion: [DAS-28 = 0.0709 (JADAS 71) + 1.267] (R-2 = 0.49); [DAS-28 = 0.084 (JADAS 27) + 1.7404] (R-2 = 0.47) and [DAS-28 = 0.1129 (JADAS-10) + 1.5748] (R-2 = 0.50).Conclusion: The conversion of scores of DAS-28 and JADAS 71, 27 and 10 for this mathematical model would allow equivalent application of both in adolescents with arthritis. Características morfogênicas e estruturais da Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu submetida a diferentes doses de nitrogênio e alturas de resíduos

The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate of leaf appearance, leaf elongation rate, number of green leaves, length of blade and stem of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu under different nitrogen levels and two residue heights. A randomized block design was used in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme, four doses of nitrogen (100, 200, 300 and 400 kg N ha(-1) year(-1)) and two residue heights (5 and 15 cm). There was significant interaction between residue height and nitrogen levels for leaf appearance rate of signal grass, which was influenced negatively and linearly by the residue heights being observed an average reduction of 28.20% from lower to higher residue. There was no interaction between the levels of nitrogen x residue height on the number of green leaves. The dosage that provided the highest stalk in the residue height of 5 cm was of 271.5 kg N ha(-1). An increase of 0.0745 cm tiller(-1) day(-1) for 1 kg of N ha(-1) applied to height of 15 cm of residue was observed. Nitrogen fertilization contributes positively to growth and development of rates of appearance and leaf extension. The management of pasture of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu with 5 cm of residue and fertilization with 100 kg N ha(-1) provided better answer morphogenic traits.

The George C. Martin Papers includes Civil War correspondence between George Canning Martin and his wife, Sarah Jane, from May 1862 to August 1864. Subjects include camp life, the progress of the war in North Carolina and Virginia, and the physical and mental condition of the Confederate soldiers (such as ill health, poor food, and depression). Also included are tax receipts, pension records, newspapers clippings (1863), a commonplace book belonging to Robert Smith, and a memoir (author unknown).

The South Carolina Farmer's Alliance Papers consist of a reminiscence of the Farmer’s Alliance by W.A. James of Bishopville, SC, who was a county business agent for Sumter County. Also included is a two page comment by Dr. John H. Moore of the Winthrop History Department. The Farmers Alliance was an organized agrarian economic movement among farmers that developed and flourished from the 1870s through 1900.
