Economical and operational analysis of outsourced warehouse function

The target of the thesis was to find out has the decision to outsource part of Filtronic LK warehouse function been profitable. Furthermore, another thesis target was to demonstrate current logistics processes between TPLP and company and find out the targets for developing these processes. The decision to outsource part of logistical funtions have been profitable during the first business year. Partnership includes always business risks. Risk increases high asset specific investments. In the other hand investment to partnership increases mutual trust and commitment between parties. By developing partnership risks and opportunitic behaviour can be decreased. The potential of managing material and data flows between logistic service provider and company observed. By analyzing inventory effiency were highlighted the need for decreasing the capital invested to inventories. The recommendations for managing outsourced logistical funtions were established such as improving partnership, process development, performance measurement and invoice checking.

Innovativeness in an industrial enterprise

Innovativeness is one of the most important factors of a successful and competitive company, and because of this every company wants to be more and more innovative. The purpose of this study is to clarify the current state of the case company’s innovativeness with the help of a questionnaire survey based on characteristics of an innovative company presented in the literature. In addition, an action plan for improving the case company’s innovativeness is formulated. Based on theoretical background the components of an innovative company can be divided in six classes. These classes are innovation strategy, innovation management, cooperation and communication, idea management, support mechanisms and innovative organizational culture. The empirical study proves that there are notable differences between and inside these previously mentioned classes within the case company. The study indicates also that although systematic innovation activities are rather new issues to the case company, the prerequisites for innovation and innovativeness exist. In order to be able to develop its innovativeness, the case company should invest resources in aligning its innovation operations towards a more systematic approach. However, perceivable results in the company’s innovativeness can be achieved by proper communication.

The Market Behavior of Emerging Stock Markets in Europe

This study investigates the over and underreaction effects in nine emerging stock markets of Europe. Especially, the possible behavioral aspects behind them are an area of interest. These aspects would link them strongly to behavioral finance. Second, our aim is to provide more evidence of the similar or dissimilar behavior in general among these countries. Third, the possibility to gain abnormal returns from these markets is also under investigation. Data from nine emerging stock market indexes in Europe is gathered from January 1, 1998 to January 1, 2008 to find answers to the stated questions. Studies for the over and underreaction effects are done using a variant of the event study methodology which in this case includes two different calculation methods for the expected returns. Studies are performed using 60 day time intervals. The results between the two different methods used are relatively similar concerning the over and underreaction effects. Another of the methods, however, suggests there to be behavioral aspects behind the effects interpreted. On the other hand, the another method does not support this suggestion. However, a conclusion can be made that the factors driving these countries' behavior are related to their geographical location and to the fact that they are emerging countries.

Kokoonpantavuuden parantaminen uusien konepajatuotteiden verkostotuotannossa

Verkostotoiminta asettaa haasteita suunnittelutyölle, valmistukselle, hankintatoimelle ja laadunhallinnalle, jotka kaikki vaikuttavat kokoonpanon sujuvuuteen. Suunnittelun ja valmistuksen yhteistyö on entistäkin haasteellisempaa, kun osavalmistus toteutetaan erillisillä toimittajilla. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on selvittää The Switch Drive Systems Oy:n tuotteiden kokoonpantavuuden parantamisen mahdollisuuksia sekä toimia yrityksen kokoonpantavuuteen liittyvien toimintamallien kehittämisen perustana. Diplomityöstä on olemassa myös julkinen versio. Työ alkaa kirjallisuuskatsauksella, jossa kuvataan kokoonpanoystävällisyyttä ja kokoonpanoystävällistä toimintaa kattaen suunnittelun, osien ja osakokoonpanojen valmistamisen verkostotuotannossa sekä kokoonpanotyön. Toimittajayhteistyötä ja laadunhallintaa käsitellään näiden lukujen yhteydessä. Työn käytännön osuudessa kartoitetaan The Switchin tuotteiden ja yrityksen toimintatapojen kokoonpanoystävällisyyden parantamismahdollisuuksia. Tämä toteutettiin The Switchin henkilöstön sekä osakokoonpanojen ja osien toimittajien haastatteluilla, toiminnan tarkkailulla sekä piirustuksiin ja prosessikuvauksiin perehtymällä. Kokoonpantavuuden ja valmistettavuuden systemaattinen huomioiminen on kannattavaa suunnittelun alusta alkaen. Tässä tulee mm. hyödyntää sekä toimittajien että The Switchin kokoonpanossa olevaa tietoa ja kokemusta.

Strategic choices and performance – an empirical analysis of largest European and North American energy companies

Energy industry has gone through major changes globally in past two decades. Liberalization of energy markets has led companies to integrate both vertically and horizontally. Growing concern on sustainable development and aims to decrease greenhouse gases in future will increase the portion of renewable energy in total energy production. Purpose of this study was to analyze using statistical methods, what impacts different strategic choices has on biggest European and North American energy companies’ performance. Results show that vertical integration, horizontal integration and use of renewable energy in production had the most impact on profitability. Increase in level of vertical integration decreased companies’ profitability, while increase in horizontal integration improved companies’ profitability. Companies that used renewable energy in production were less profitable than companies not using renewable energy.

Suorituskyvyn mittaaminen sosiaali- ja perusterveydenhuoltotoimialalla

Oikein suoritettu suorituskyvyn mittaaminen tuo kirjallisuuden mukaan organisaatiolle monia hyötyjä. Julkisen sektorin toimijat kohtaavat kuitenkin useita haasteita suorituskyvyn mittaamisessa ja mittausjärjestelmän suunnittelussa, eikä useimmilla sektorin organisaatioilla ole käytössään kattavaa mittausjärjestelmää. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli suunnitella suorituskyvyn mallimittaristo kuntien ja julkisen sektorin sosiaali- ja perusterveydenhuoltotoimialan organisaatioiden käyttöön. Tutkimus toteutettiin case-tutkimuksena konstruktiivista tutkimusotetta käyttäen, sillä työssä pyrittiin kehittämään mallimittaristo, joka on sovellettavissa useaan tapaukseen. Mallimittariston kehittäminen perustui julkisen sektorin sekä sosiaali- ja terveystoimen suorituskykyä ja sen mittaamista käsittelevään tieteelliseen kirjallisuuteen, tutkimukseen ja asiantuntijoiden haastatteluihin. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että mittariston suunnitteluprosessissa tulee kiinnittää huomiota erityisesti terminologiaan, mittaamisen tarkoitukseen, nykyiseen mittaamisen tasoon, laatutekijöihin ja vaikutuksiin sekä suorituskyvyn kaikkien osa-alueiden huomioimiseen ja linjassa pitämiseen. Tutkimustuloksena saatiin lisäksi tietoa mittariston rakentamis-prosessista ja tärkeistä mittauskohteista sosiaali- ja perusterveydenhuoltotoimialalla. Jo itse suunnitteluprosessi koettiin hyödylliseksi suorituskyvyn kentän ja sen mittaamisen ymmärtämiseksi. Maakunnan alueellinen kehittäjä hyväksyi mallimittariston ja esitti työn tulokset ja suositukset alueen kunnille. Mittariston toimivuus käytännössä tullaan havaitsemaan siis vasta myöhemmin, mikäli kunnat päättävät ottaa mittariston käyttöön.
