Among the wide variety of materials employed in the manufacture of shoes, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are one of the most widely used. Given its widespread use, and associated waste management problems, the development of more biodegradable and evironmentally compatible solutions is needed. In this work, a polyester-based TPU used in the footwear industry for outsoles production was modified by compounding with lignin, starch and cellulose at content of 4% (w/w). The biodegradability was evaluated by using agar plate tests with the fungi Aspergillus niger ATCC16404, the Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC9027 and an association of both (consortium), and soil tests at 37 °C and 58 °C. The obtained results evidenced a positive effect of the tested biobased additives, the most favourable results being registered with lignin. These results were corroborated by the structural modifications observed by FTIR analysis. Additionally, mechanical tests prove the suitability of using the lignin modified TPUs for footwear outsoles production.

Entrepreneurship is having the courage to transform an idea in reality and with it achieve personal, financial and recognition satisfaction. The psychological ability to handle failure has proven essential in success. Goal: Analyse the importance of idiosyncratic psychological aspects in the success of entrepreneurs. Method: Observational study, using a case study, a group of 20 entrepreneurs from the idea presentation phase to company incorporation during a period of two months. Results: During the observation period 4 distinct psychological phases of the entrepreneurs were observed, being it possible to describe them as follows: absorption of information and knowledge; application of the gathered knowledge to their specific cases; frustration generated by criticism, namely from investors who don’t recognize the value of their projects; realism and implementation of the project. Having passed more than 6 months after the analysis period, one can verify the entrepreneurs who have travelled the 4 phases and specially reached the realism of Phase 4, are today developing their projects being that the remaining ones, majority of which weren’t able to overcome Phase 3, are in a similar situation as at the end of the initial two months. Conclusion: The ability to cope with frustration and rejection is a determinant factor in the success of the entrepreneur. The ability to learn from rejection, more than resilience help the entrepreneur to proceed. Therefore, based on the observations, entrepreneurship has a lot to gain if besides technical assistance also coaching assistance is provided.

This paper describes an algorithm for scheduling packets in real-time multimedia data streams. Common to these classes of data streams are service constraints in terms of bandwidth and delay. However, it is typical for real-time multimedia streams to tolerate bounded delay variations and, in some cases, finite losses of packets. We have therefore developed a scheduling algorithm that assumes streams have window-constraints on groups of consecutive packet deadlines. A window-constraint defines the number of packet deadlines that can be missed in a window of deadlines for consecutive packets in a stream. Our algorithm, called Dynamic Window-Constrained Scheduling (DWCS), attempts to guarantee no more than x out of a window of y deadlines are missed for consecutive packets in real-time and multimedia streams. Using DWCS, the delay of service to real-time streams is bounded even when the scheduler is overloaded. Moreover, DWCS is capable of ensuring independent delay bounds on streams, while at the same time guaranteeing minimum bandwidth utilizations over tunable and finite windows of time. We show the conditions under which the total demand for link bandwidth by a set of real-time (i.e., window-constrained) streams can exceed 100% and still ensure all window-constraints are met. In fact, we show how it is possible to guarantee worst-case per-stream bandwidth and delay constraints while utilizing all available link capacity. Finally, we show how best-effort packets can be serviced with fast response time, in the presence of window-constrained traffic.

We generalize the well-known pebble game to infinite dag's, and we use this generalization to give new and shorter proofs of results in different areas of computer science (as diverse as "logic of programs" and "formal language theory"). Our applications here include a proof of a theorem due to Salomaa, asserting the existence of a context-free language with infinite index, and a proof of a theorem due to Tiuryn and Erimbetov, asserting that unbounded memory increases the power of logics of programs. The original proofs by Salomaa, Tiuryn, and Erimbetov, are fairly technical. The proofs by Tiuryn and Erimbetov also involve advanced techniques of model theory, namely, back-and-forth constructions based on a variant of Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse games. By contrast, our proofs are not only shorter, but also elementary. All we need is essentially finite induction and, in the case of the Tiuryn-Erimbetov result, the compactness and completeness of first-order logic.

The purpose of this preliminary study is to identify signs of fatigue in specific muscle groups that in turn directly influence accuracy in professional darts. Electromyography (EMG) sensors are employed to monitor the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles of the trunk and upper limb during throw. It is noted that the Flexor Pollicis Brevis muscle which controls the critical release action during throw shows signs of fatigue. This is accompanied by an inherent increase in mean integral EMG amplitude for a number of other throw related muscles indicating an attempt to maintain constant applied throwing force. A strong correlation is shown to exist between average score and decrease in mean integral ECG amplitude for the Flexor Pollicis Brevis.

This thesis is the study of the use and abuse of Edmund Spenser as an authority in native English epic literature of the early seventeenth century, within fifty years of his death. It focuses on attempts to emulate or adapt his seminal text, The Faerie Queene (1596), and offers a comparative analysis of two such approaches by the liminal authors, Ralph Knevet and Samuel Sheppard. The former, a tutor to the wealthy Norfolk Paston family, produced his A Supplement of the Ferie Queene in the pre-Civil War period (c.1630-1635), while the latter wrote The Faerie King at the very end of the social upheaval of the war (c.1648-54). The thesis privileges the study of the holograph manuscripts (Cambridge University Library, MS Ee.3.53 and Bodleian Library MS Rawl. Poet. 28 respectively) over the basic editions of these neglected texts. It argues for the need to re-evaluate the significance of such texts within the Spenserian canon and, through new readings of the texts' structures and contexts, the thesis questions the legitimacy of canon formation and continuation, as well as the influence editorial policies and decision making can have on subsequent readers and receptions of the text

Background: The role of Fas (CD95) and its ligand, Fas ligand (FasL/CD95L), is poorly understood in the intestine. Whilst Fas is best studies in terms of its function in apoptosis, recent studies suggest that Fas ligation may mediate additional, non-apoptotic functions such as inflammation. Toll like Receptors (TLRs) play an important role in mediating inflammation and homeostasis in the intestine. Recent studies have shown that a level of crosstalk exists between the Fas and TLR signalling pathways but this has not yet been investigated in the intestine. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate potential cross-talk between TLRs and Fas/FasL system in intestinal cancer cells. Results: Treatment with TLR4 and TLR5 ligands, but not ligands for TLR2 and TLR9 increased the expression of Fas and FasL in intestinal cancer cells in vitro. Consistent with this, expression of Fas and FasL was reduced in the distal colon tissue from germ-free (GF), TLR4 and TLR5 knock-out (KO) mice but was unchanged in TLR2KO tissue, suggesting that intestinal cancer cells display a degree of specificity in their ability to upregulate Fas and FasL expression in response to TLR ligation. Expression of both Fas and FasL was significantly reduced in TRIF KO tissue, indicating that signalling via TRIF by TLR4 and TLR5 agonists may be responsible for the induction of Fas and FasL expression in intestinal cancer cells. In addition, modulating Fas signalling using agonistic anti-Fas augmented TLR4 and TLR5-mediated tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin 8 (IL)-8 production by intestinal cancer cells, suggesting crosstalk occurs between these receptors in these cells. Furthermore, suppression of Fas in intestinal cancer cells reduced the ability of the intestinal pathogens, Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes to induce the expression of IL-8, suggesting that Fas signalling may play a role in intestinal host defence against pathogens. Inflammation is known to be important in colon tumourigenesis and Fas signalling on intestinal cancer cells has been shown to result in the production of inflammatory mediators. Fas-mediated signalling may therefore play a role in colon cancer development. Suppression of tumour-derived Fas by 85% led to a reduction in the tumour volume and changes in tumour infiltrating macrophages and neutrophils. TLR4 signalling has been shown to play a role in colon cancer via the recruitment and activation of alternatively activated immune cells. Given the crosstalk seen between Fas and TLR4 signalling in intestinal cancer cells in vitro, suppressing Fas signalling may enhance the efficacy of TLR4 antagonism in vivo. TLR4 antagonism resulted in smaller tumours with fewer infiltrating neutrophils. Whilst Fas downregulation did not significantly augment the ability of TLR4 antagonism to reduce the final tumour volume, Fas suppression may augment the anti-tumour effects of TLR4 antagonism as neutrophil infiltration was further reduced upon combinatorial treatment. Conclusion: Together, this study demonstrates evidence of a new role for Fas in the intestinal immune response and that manipulating Fas signalling has potential anti-tumour benefit.

Sound waves are propagating pressure fluctuations, which are typically several orders of magnitude smaller than the pressure variations in the flow field that account for flow acceleration. On the other hand, these fluctuations travel at the speed of sound in the medium, not as a transported fluid quantity. Due to the above two properties, the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations do not resolve the acoustic fluctuations. This paper discusses a defect correction method for this type of multi-scale problems in aeroacoustics. Numerical examples in one dimensional and two dimensional are used to illustrate the concept. When chitin is used in pharmaceutical formulations, processing of chitin with metal silicates is advantageous, from both an industrial and pharmaceutical perspective, compared to processing using silicon dioxide. Unlike the use of acidic and basic reagents for the industrial preparation of chitin-silica particles, coprecipitation of metal silicates is dependent upon a simple replacement reaction between sodium silicate and metal chlorides. When coprecipitated onto chitin particles, aluminum, magnesium, or calcium silicates result in nonhygroscopic, highly compactable/disintegrable compacts. Disintegration and hardness parameters for coprocessed chitin compacts were investigated and found to be independent of the particle size. Capillary action appears to be the major contributor to both water uptake and the driving force for disintegration of compacts. The good compaction and compression properties shown by the chitin-metal silicates were found to be strongly dependent upon the type of metal silicate coprecipitated onto chitin. In addition, the inherent binding and disintegration abilities of chitin-metal silicates are useful in pharmaceutical applications when poorly compressible and/or highly nonpolar drugs need to be formulated. The X-ray crystal structures of two lamotrigine derivatives (I) 3,5-diamino-6-(2-chlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine, C9H8ClN5, (465BL) as a hydrate, and (II) 3,5-diamino-6-(3,6-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine, C9H7Cl2N5, (469BR) as a methanol solvate, have been carried out at liquid nitrogen temperature and room temperature, respectively. A detailed comparison of the two structures is given. Both are centrosymmetric with (I) in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, a = 12.2507(3), b = 15.7160(6), c = 21.71496(9) angstrom, Z = 16, and (II) in the monoclinic space group C2/c, a = 38.553(3), b = 4.9586(2), c = 14.546(2) angstrom, beta = 111.59(1)degrees, Z = 8. Final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] for (I) are R1 = 0.0670, wR2 = 0.1515 and for (II) R1 = 0.0434, wR2 = 0.1185. Structure (I) has water of crystallization in the lattice and (II) includes a solvated CH3OH. Structure (I) is characterized by having two crystallographically independent molecules, A and B, of 465BL, per asymmetric unit. Molecule B has a very unusual feature in that the 2-chlorophenyl ring is statistically disordered, occupying site (1) in 87.5% of the structure and site (2) in 12.5% of the structure. Sites (1) and (2) are related by an exact 180 degrees pivot of the phenyl ring about the ring linkage bond. The presence of two independent molecules per asymmetric unit provides an ideal opportunity for the conformational flexibility of the molecule 465BL to be studied. Structure (I) also includes a further unusual feature in that the lattice contains one fully occupied water molecule and an additional solvated water which is only 33% occupied.
