Total synthesis of (+)-phomopsolide B

An enantiospecific total synthesis of polyhydroxy delta-pyrone natural product phomopsolide B is accomplished. The main feature of the synthesis is the installation of the required E-olefin by Horner-Emmons-Wordsworth reaction and the formation of the lactone involving Still-Gennari olefination followed by lactonization. Algorithmic aspects of k-tuple total domination in graphs

For a fixed positive integer k, a k-tuple total dominating set of a graph G = (V. E) is a subset T D-k of V such that every vertex in V is adjacent to at least k vertices of T Dk. In minimum k-tuple total dominating set problem (MIN k-TUPLE TOTAL DOM SET), it is required to find a k-tuple total dominating set of minimum cardinality and DECIDE MIN k-TUPLE TOTAL DOM SET is the decision version of MIN k-TUPLE TOTAL DOM SET problem. In this paper, we show that DECIDE MIN k-TUPLE TOTAL DOM SET is NP-complete for split graphs, doubly chordal graphs and bipartite graphs. For chordal bipartite graphs, we show that MIN k-TUPLE TOTAL DOM SET can be solved in polynomial time. We also propose some hardness results and approximation algorithms for MIN k-TUPLE TOTAL DOM SET problem. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An Approach to seco-Prezizaane Sesquiterpenoids: Enantioselective Total Synthesis of (+)-1S-Minwanenone

A strategy of general applicability toward seco-prezizaane sesquiterpenes, from a chiral, tricyclic synthon, readily available via an enzymatic resolution step from the Diels-Alder adduct of cyclopentadiene and p-benzoquinone, has been devised. Our approach enables harnessing of the stereochemical proclivities of the norbornyl system to install the desired stereochemistry at the key stereogenic centers. Recourse to an interesting stratagem to realign a stereochemical divergence into stereoreconvergence forms the cornerstone of our successful approach. The first total synthesis of (+)-1S-minwanenone, a prototypical member of seco-prezizaane subclass, has been accomplished.

Space-vector-based hybrid pulse width modulation technique to reduce line current distortion in induction motor drives

Pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques involving different switching sequences are used in space vector-based PWM generation for reducing line current ripple in induction motor drives. This study proposes a hybrid PWM technique employing five switching sequences. The proposed technique is a combination of continuous PWM, discontinuous PWM (DPWM) and advanced bus clamping PWM methods. Performance of the proposed PWM technique is evaluated and compared with those of the existing techniques on a constant volts per hertz induction motor drive. In terms of total harmonic distortion in the line current, the proposed method is shown to be superior to both conventional space vector PWM (CSVPWM) and DPWM over a fundamental frequency range of 32-50 Hz at a given average switching frequency. The reduction in harmonic distortion is about 42% over CSVPWM at the rated speed of the drive.

Data-resolution based optimal choice of minimum required measurements for image-guided diffuse optical tomography

Image-guided diffuse optical tomography has the advantage of reducing the total number of optical parameters being reconstructed to the number of distinct tissue types identified by the traditional imaging modality, converting the optical image-reconstruction problem from underdetermined in nature to overdetermined. In such cases, the minimum required measurements might be far less compared to those of the traditional diffuse optical imaging. An approach to choose these optimally based on a data-resolution matrix is proposed, and it is shown that such a choice does not compromise the reconstruction performance. Enantiospecific Total Synthesis of (-)-Bengamide E

Total synthesis of the polyhydroxy caprolactam amide natural product, bengamide E, is accomplished starting from tartaric acid. Key reactions in the synthesis include desymmetrization of the bis(dimethylamide) unit of tartaric acid, Zn(BH4)2-mediated anti-selective reduction, and a HornerWadsworthEmmons olefination.

Row-buffer reorganization: simultaneously improving performance and reducing energy in DRAMs

In this paper, based on the temporal and spatial locality characteristics of memory accesses in multicores, we propose a re-organization of the existing single large row buffer in a DRAM bank into multiple smaller row-buffers. The proposed configuration helps improve the row hit rates and also brings down the energy required for row-activations. The major contribution of this work is proposing such a reorganization without requiring any significant changes to the existing widely accepted DRAM specifications. Our proposed reorganization improves performance by 35.8%, 14.5% and 21.6% in quad, eight and sixteen core workloads along with a 42%, 28% and 31% reduction in DRAM energy. Additionally, we introduce a Need Based Allocation scheme for buffer management that shows additional performance improvement.

QCD mini-jets contribution to the total cross-section for pions and protons and expectations at LHC

We describe our kt-resummation model for total cross-sections and show its application to pp and ¯pp scattering. The model uses mini-jets to drive the rise of the cross-section and soft gluon resummation in the infrared region to transform the violent rise of the mini-jet cross-section into a logarithmic behaviour in agreement with the Froissart bound.

An Expeditious Enantiospecific Total Synthesis of (-)-Crassalactone C

A concise and expeditious approach for the total synthesis of bioactive styryllactone (-)-crassalactone C is presented from tartaric acid. The main features of the synthesis include the desymmetrization of dimethylamide of tartaric acid and the effective use of cinnamoyl ester as a protecting group as well as a reactant in the ring-closing metathesis reaction.

Total internal reflection (TIR) Raman tribometer: a new tool for in situ study of friction-induced material transfer

The sliding history in friction-induced material transfer of dry 2H-MoS2 particles in a sheared contact was studied. Video images in contact showed fragmentation of lubricant particles and build-up of a transfer film, and were used to measure the speed of fragmented particles in the contact region. Total internal reflection (TIR) Raman spectroscopy was used to follow the build-up of the MoS2 transfer film. A combination of in situ and ex situ analysis of the mating bodies revealed the thickness of the transfer film at steady state to be of the order of 35 nm on the ball surface and 15 nm on the flat substrate. Insights into the mechanism of formation of the transfer film in the early stages of sliding contact are deduced.

Total synthesis and determination of the absolute configuration of 5,6-Dihydro-alpha-pyrone natural product synargentolide B

Enantiospecific total synthesis and determination of the absolute stereochemistry of the alpha-pyrone-containing natural product synargentolide B were accomplished. The absolute stereochemistry of the natural product was established by synthesizing the possible diastereomers and comparison of the data with those reported for the natural product. During the process, total synthesis of the putative structure of related natural product 6R-1S,2R,SR,6S-(tetraacetyloxy)-3E-heptenyl]-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-o ne was also accomplished and confirmed by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Wittig-Horner reaction of a chiral phosphonate derived from (S)-lactic acid and ring-closing metathesis were the key reactions during the course of the total synthesis.

Bimetallic core-shell nanocomposites using weak reducing agent and their transformation to alloy nanostructures

An in situ seeding growth methodology towards the preparation of core-shell nanoparticles composed of noble metals has been developed by employing trimethylamine borane (TMAB) as the reducing agent. Being a weak reducing agent, TMAB is able to distinguish the smallest reduction potential window of any two metals which renders selective reduction of metal ions thus affording a core-shell architecture of the nanoparticles. A dramatic effect of solvent was noted during the reduction of Ag+ ions: an immediate reduction took place at room temperature when dry THF was used as solvent however, usage of wet THF (THF used directly from the bottle) brings out the reduction only at reflux conditions. In the case of Au and Pd nanoparticles, preparation was found to be independent of the quality of solvent used. Au nanoparticles are realized at room temperature whereas reflux conditions are required in the case of Pd nanoparticles. This difference in behavior of the monometallic nanoparticles was successfully exploited to construct different noble metal nanoparticles with core-shell architectures such as Au@Ag, Ag@Au, and Ag@Pd. Transformation of these core-shell nanoparticles to their thermodynamically stable alloy counterparts is also demonstrated under very mild conditions reported to date.

Enantiospecific total synthesis of indole alkaloids (+)-eburnamonine, (-)-aspidospermidine and (-)-quebrachamine

An enantiospecific total synthesis of indole alkaloids eburnamonine, aspidospermidine and quebrachamine is described from lactic acid. Synthesis of all three alkaloids is accomplished from a single chiral building block. Johnson-Claisen rearrangement of a chiral allyl alcohol is the main feature for the installation of the required quaternary centre.

Total Synthesis of (+)-Pinellic Acid

A straightforward strategy for the synthesis of (+)-pinellic acid in 16% overall yield and 13 steps, starting from (1R)-1-(furan-2-yl)hexan-1-ol, is described. Key reactions in the synthesis include a Sharpless kinetic resolution, oxidation of a protected furan to reveal a but-2-ene-1,4-dione moiety, and an asymmetric reduction.

Laser receptive polyelectrolyte thin films doped with biosynthesized silver nanoparticles for antibacterial coatings and drug delivery applications

We report a simple method to fabricate multifunctional polyelectrolyte thin films to load and deliver the therapeutic drugs. The multilayer thin films were assembled by the electrostatic adsorption of poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and dextran sulfate (DS). The silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) biosynthesized from novel Hybanthus enneaspermus leaf extract as the reducing agent were successfully incorporated into the film. The biosynthesized Ag NPs showed excellent antimicrobial activity against the range of enteropathogens, which could be significantly enhanced when used with commercial antibiotics. The assembled silver nano composite multilayer films showed rupture and deformation when they are exposed to laser. The Ag NPs act as an energy absorption center, locally heat up the film and rupture it under laser treatment. The antibacterial drug, moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MH) was successfully loaded into the multilayer films. The total amount of MH release observed was about 63% which increased to 85% when subjected to laser light exposure. Thus, the polyelectrolyte thin film reported in our study has significant potential in the field of remote activated drug delivery, antibacterial coatings and wound dressings. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.
