Near infrared broadband emission characteristics of bismuth-doped aluminophosphate glass have been investigated. Broad infrared emissions peaking at 1210nm, 1173nm and 1300nm were observed when the glass was pumped by 405nm laser diode (LD), 514nm Ar+ laser and 808nm LD, respectively. The full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) are 235nm, 207nm and 300nm for the emissions at 1210nm, 1173nm and 1300nm, respectively. Based on the energy matching conditions, it is suggested that the infrared emission may be ascribed to P-3(1) --> P-3(0) transition of Bi+. The broadband infrared luminescent characteristics of the glasses indicate that they are promising for broadband optical fiber amplifiers and tunable lasers. (C) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Near-infrared broadband emission from bismuth-tantalum-codoped germanium oxide glasses was observed at room temperature when the glasses were pumped by an 808 nm laser diode. The emission band covered the 0, E, S, C, and L bands (1260-1625 nm), with a maximum peak at similar to 1310 nm, a FWHM broader than 400 nm, and a lifetime longer than 200 lis. The observed broadband luminescence was attributed to bismuth clusters in the glasses. Bismuth-tantalum-codoped germanium oxide glass might be promising as amplification media for broadly tunable lasers and wideband amplifiers in optical communications. ZnO films were grown on (0 0 0 1) LiNbO3 substrates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Annealing of ZnO films was performed in air for I h at 800 degrees C. The effects of annealing on the structural and optical properties of ZnO thin films on LiNbO3 substrates were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and AFM showed that the as-grown and the annealed ZnO films grown on LiNbO3 substrates had c-axis preferential orientation, the crystallinity of the ZnO films grown on LiNbO3 Substrates was improved, and the grain size increased by annealing. The PL spectra showed that the intensity of the UV near-band-edge peak was increased after annealing, while the intensity of visible peak (deep-level emission) decreased. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were grown on the beta-Ga2O3 (100) substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that the ZnO films are c-axis oriented. The optical and electrical properties of the films were investigated. The room temperature Photoluminescence (PL) spectrum showed a near band emission at 3.28 eV with two deep level emissions. Optical absorption indicated a visible exciton absorption at room temperature. The as-grown films had good electrical properties with the resistivities as low as 0.02 Omega cm at room temperature. Thus, beta-Ga2O3 (100) substrate is shown to be a suitable substrate for fabricating ZnO film. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reports that the m-plane GaN layer is grown on (200)-plane LiAlO2 substrate by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) method. Tetragonal-shaped crystallites appear at the smooth surface. Raman measurement illuminates the compressive stress in the layer which is released with increasing the layer's thickness. The high transmittance (80%), sharp band edge and excitonic absorption peak show that the GaN layer has good optical quality. The donor acceptor pair emission peak located at similar to 3.41 eV with full-width at half maximum of 120 meV and no yellow peaks in the photoluminescence spectra partially show that no Li incorporated into GaN layer from the LiAlO2 substrate.

Broadband neat-infrared emission from transparent Ni2+-doped sodium aluminosilicate glass-cermaics is observed. The broad emission is centered at 1290 nm and covers the whole telecommunication wavelength region (1100-1700 nm) with full width at half maximum of about 340 nm. The observed infrared emission could be attributed to the T-3(2)(F) -> (3)A(2)(F) transition of octahedral Ni2+ ions that occupy high-field sites in nanocrystals. The product of the lifetime and the stimulated emission cross section is 2.15 x 10(-24) cm(2)s. It is suggested that Ni2+-doped sodium aluminosilicate glass ceramics have potential applications in tunable broadband light sources and broadband amplifiers.

ZnO thin films were deposited on the substrates of (100) gamma-LiAlO2 at 400, 550 and 700 degrees C using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with the fixed oxygen pressure of 20 Pa, respectively. When the substrate temperature is 400 degrees C, the grain size of the film is less than 1 mu m observed by Leitz microscope and measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD). As the substrate temperature increases to 550 degrees C, highly-preferred c-orientation and high-quality ZnO film can be attained. While the substrate temperature rises to 700 degrees C, more defects appears on the surface of film and the ZnO films become polycrystalline again possibly because more Li of the substrate diffused into the ZnO film at high substrate temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnO films at room temperature show the blue emission peaks centered at 430 nm. We suggest that the blue emission corresponds to the electron transition from the level of interstitial Zn to the valence band. Meanwhile, the films grown on gamma-LiAlO2 (LAO) exhibit green emission centered at 540 nm, which seemed to be ascribed to excess zinc and/or oxygen vacancy in the ZnO films caused by diffusion of Li. from the substrates into the films during the deposition.

For the first time, the effect of Na+ on crystal structure, valence state of Yb ions, spectroscopic properties of YbF3-doped CaF2 system was systematically studied. Na+ can greatly suppress the deoxidization of Yb3+ to Yb2+. Absorption and emission spectra showed codoping Na+ with different Na:Yb ratios can modulate the spectroscopy and photoluminescence properties of Yb3+ ions in CaF2 lattice in a large scope. The emission lifetime and quantum efficiency of Yb3+ in CaF2 were greatly enhanced by the codopant of Na+. The potential laser performances of the new Yb, Na-codoped CaF2 crystals were predicted. Spectroscopic properties of Ce-doped yttrium orthoaluminate (Ce:YAlO3 or Ce:YAP) crystals grown by temperature gradient technique (TGT) were investigated, and the effects of the growth conditions on the properties were analyzed.. Methods of optical absorption (OA), photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence decay (PLD), X-ray excited luminescence (XL) and cathodeluminescence (CL) were used in these investigations. The results showed that the absorption band peak at 202, 394 and 532 nm originated from F and F+ color center induced by the weak reducing growth atmosphere, green emission band near 500 ran derived from Ce3+ -Ce3+ pairs and band at 650 similar to 850 run from some unintentional impurity in crystals.
