Nonpolar a-plane (1120) ZnO thin films have been fabricated on gamma-LiAlO2 (302) substrates via the low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. An obvious intensity variation of the E-2 mode in the Raman spectra indicates that there exhibits in-plane optical anisotropy in the a-plane ZnO thin films. Highly-oriented uniform grains of rectangular shape can be seen from the atomic force microscopy images, which mean that the lateral growth rate of the thin films is also anisotropic. It is demonstrated experimentally that a buffer layer deposited at a low temperature (200 degrees C) can improve the structural and optical properties of the epilayer to a large extent. Non-polar (1 (1) over bar 00)m-plane ZnO thin film has been prepared on gamma-LiAlO2 (100)substrate via the low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Obvious intensity variation of the E-2 mode in the polarized Raman spectra and the absorption edge shift in the polarized optical transmission spectra indicate that the m-plane film exhibits optical anisotropy, which have applications in certain optical devices, such as the UV modulator and polarization-dependent beam switch. From the atomic force microscopy images, highly-oriented uniform-sized grains of rectangular shape were observed. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Plasticine strips are rolled between cylindrical rollers to model the phenomenon of material transfer in metal rolling. Strips of thin plastic film ('clingfilm') on the plasticine strip are used to model the oxide layer that covers the surface of aluminium. The effect of gaps opening up between the clingfilm strips is investigated. It is found that the percentage area of the exposed strip giving rise to transfer of material increases with the gap width. The evidence strongly suggests that plasticine particles transferred to the rolls are able to pick off plasticine from the strip on successive passes. Larger plasticine particles are more likely to show this behaviour and consequently grow in size. The results confirm the usefulness of plasticine as a suitable material to investigate transfer layer formation in metal rolling, and help inform development of experimental procedures to study the evolution of real metal transfer layers. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. 4H-silicon carbide (SiC) metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors with Al2O3/SiO2 (A/S) films employed as antireflection/passivation layers have been demonstrated. The devices showed a peak responsivity of 0.12 A/W at 290 nm and maximum external quantum efficiency of 50% at 280 nm under 20 V electrical bias, which were much larger than conventional MSM detectors. The redshift of peak responsivity and response restriction effect were found and analyzed. The A/S/4H-SiC MSM photodetectors were also shown to possess outstanding features including high UV to visible rejection ratio, large photocurrent, etc. These results demonstrate A/S/4H-SiC photodetectors as a promising candidate for OEIC applications.
