The effect of CaCl(2), Ca(NO(3))(2), CaSO(4), CaCO(3) and Ca(3)(PO(4))(2) on the flow behavior of xanthan gum solutions was investigated. Regardless the concentration and type of calcium salt used, xanthan solutions presented pseudoplastic behavior. The soluble salts (CaCl(2) and Ca(NO(3))(2)) induced the disordered state in the xanthan chains at concentration of 1.0 g/L or 10 g/L, decreasing the flow consistency index (K) values. At 100 g/L soluble salts K values were similar to those found for pure xanthan solutions, whereas at the same concentration of insoluble particles the K values increased 20%. The adsorption of xanthan gum onto Si/SiO(2) surfaces in the presence of calcium salts was investigated by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adsorbed layer of xanthan onto Si/SiO(2) consisted of two regions: (i) a thin acid resistant sublayer, where xanthan chains were like highly entangled fibers and (ii) a thick upperlayer, whose morphology was calcium salt dependent. This study describes the preparation and characterization of new starch cross-linked polyurethanes produced by the reaction of native cornstarch with a propylene oxide toluene diisocyanate oligomer. Infrared analysis confirmed the occurrence of the reaction and solubility and swelling tests showed that it had led to cross-linked structures. These products were totally amorphous and displayed elastomeric properties associated with two T(g)s at -60 and 35 degrees C. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The in-depth oxypropylation of different types of cellulose fibers, namely Avicel, Rayon, Kraft, and Filter Paper, was investigated. New biphasic mono-component materials were obtained, which could be hot-pressed to form films of cellulose fibers dispersed into a thermoplastic matrix. The success of this chemical modification was assessed by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy. differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements. The optimization of this process led to the establishment of the optimal molar ratio between the cellulose CH groups and propylene oxide, which varied as a function of the specific morphology of the fibers. Four samples of N,O-carboxymethylchitosan (0.5 < <(DS)over bar> < 1.5) were prepared by reacting chitosan (<(DA)over bar> = 24%) with monochloroacetic acid in the presence of excess sodium hydroxide. The carboxymethylchitosan samples were soluble in a wider range of pH as compared to the parent chitosan and the X-ray diffraction showed that they adopt a less ordered arrangement. The carboxymethylation of chitosan decreased the thermal stability of the polymer as evaluated by thermogravimetry but no clear dependence of the activation energy on the average degree of substitution of carboxymethylchitosan was identified. However, the values of activation energy of carboxymethylchitosan issued from the isothermal study depended on the degree of conversion, suggesting the occurrence of a complex set of simultaneous reactions. Environmentally friendly biocomposites were successfully prepared by dissolving chitosan and cellulose in a NaOH/thiourea solvent with subsequent heating and film casting. Under the considered conditions, NaOH/thiourea led to chain depolymerization of both biopolymers without a dramatic loss of film forming capacities. Compatibility of both biopolymers in the biocomposite was firstly assessed through scanning electron microscopy, revealing an intermediate organization between cellulose fiber network and smoothness of pure chitosan. DSC analyses led to exothermic peaks close to 285 and 315 degrees C for the biocomposite, compared to the exothermic peaks of chitosan (275 degrees C) and cellulose (265 and 305 degrees C), suggesting interactions between chitosan and cellulose. Contact angle analyses pointed out the deformation that can occur at the surface due to the high affinity of the;e materials with water. T(2) NMR relaxometry behavior of biocomposites appeared to be dominated by chitosan. Other properties of films, as crystallinity, water sorption isotherms, among others, are also discussed. Cellulose cassava bagasse nanofibrils (CBN) were directly extracted from a by-product of the cassava starch (CS) industry, viz. the cassava bagasse (CB), The morphological structure of the ensuing nanoparticles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), presence of other components such as sugars by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. The resulting nanofibrils display a relatively low crystallinity and were found to be around 2-11 nm thick and 360-1700 nm long. These nanofibrils were used as reinforcing nanoparticles in a thermoplastic cassava starch matrix plasticized using either glycerol or a mixture of glycerol/sorbitol (1:1) as plasticizer. Nanocomposite films were prepared by a melting process. The reinforcing effect of the filler evaluated by dynamical mechanical tests (DMA) and tensile tests was found to depend on the nature of the plasticizer employed. Thus, for the glycerol-plasticized matrix-based composites, it was limited especially due to additional plasticization by sugars originating from starch hydrolysis during the acid extraction. This effect was evidenced by the reduction of glass vitreous temperature of starch after the incorporation of nanofibrils in TPSG and by the increase of elongation at break in tensile test. On the other hand, for glycerol/sorbitol plasticized nanocomposites the transcrystallization of amylopectin in nanofibrils surface hindered good performances of CBN as reinforcing agent for thermoplastic cassava starch. The incorporation of cassava bagasse cellulose nanofibrils in the thermoplastic starch matrices has resulted in a decrease of its hydrophilic character especially for glycerol plasticized sample. Background. Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) treatment among children with type 1 diabetes is increasing in Sweden. However, studies evaluating glycaemic control in children using CSII show inconsistent results. Omitting bolus insulin doses using CSII may cause reduced glycaemic control among adolescents. The distribution of responsibility for diabetes self-management between children and parents is often unclear and needs clarification. There is much published support for continued parental involvement and shared diabetes management during adolescence. Guided Self-Determination (GSD) is an empowerment-based, person-centred, reflection and problem solving method intended to guide the patient to become self-sufficient and develop life skills for managing difficulties in diabetes self-management. This method has been adapted for adolescents and parents as Guided Self-Determination-Young (GSD-Y). This study aims to evaluate the effect of an intervention with GSD-Y in groups of adolescents starting on insulin pumps and their parents on diabetes-related family conflicts, perceived health and quality of life (QoL), and metabolic control. Here, we describe the protocol and plans for study enrolment. Methods. This study is designed as a randomized, controlled, prospective, multicentre study. Eighty patients between 12-18 years of age who are planning to start CSII will be included. All adolescents and their parents will receive standard insulin pump training. The education intervention will be conducted when CSII is to be started and at four appointments in the first 4 months after starting CSII. The primary outcome is haemoglobin A1c levels. Secondary outcomes are perceived health and QoL, frequency of blood glucose self-monitoring and bolus doses, and usage of carbohydrate counting. The following instruments will be used to evaluate perceived health and QoL: Disabkids, 'Check your health', the Diabetes Family Conflict Scale and the Swedish Diabetes Empowerment Scale. Outcomes will be evaluated within and between groups by comparing data at baseline, and at 6 and 12 months after starting treatment. Results and discussion. In this study, we will assess the effect of starting an insulin pump together with the model of Guided Self-Determination to determine whether this approach leads to retention of improved glycaemic control, QoL, responsibility distribution and reduced diabetes-related conflicts in the family.
