Stoichiometric CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films were synthesized using a chemical solution processing, the so-called polymeric precursor method. In this soft chemical method, soluble precursors such as strontium carbonate, calcium carbonate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in an aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on glass substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of the thin films on glass substrates were studied by atomic force microscopy. The films nucleate at 300 degreesC, after the coalescence of small nuclei into larger grains yielding a homogeneous dense surface. XRD characterization of these films showed that the CaWO4 and SrWO4 phases crystallize at 400 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. No intermediate crystalline phase was identified. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films have an optical band gap, E-gap=5.27 and 5.78 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity confirmed that this soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films. Zn7Sb2O12 is known to adopt an inverse spinel crystal structure, in which Zn2+ occupies the eight tetrahedral positions and Sb5+ and Zn2+ randomly occupy the 16 octahedral positions. Samples of Zn7-xNixSb2O12 (X = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) were synthesized using a modified polymeric precursor method, known as the Pechini method. The crystal structure of the powders was characterized by Rietveld refinement with X-ray diffraction data. The results show that for X = 0, 1, and 2 Ni substitutes for Zn2+ in the octahedral sites, and that for X = 3 and 4 it is assumed that Ni2+ replaces Zn2+ ions in both the octahedral and tetrahedral positions. It is also observed for x = 3 and 4 the formation of two spinel phases. (C) 2003 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Acidic phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) isoforms in snake venoms, particularly those from Bothrops jararacussu, have not been characterized. This article reports the isolation and partial biochemical, functional and structural characterization of four acidic PLA(2)s (designated SIIISPIIA, SIIISPIIB, SIIISPIIIA and SIIISPIIIB) from this venom. The single chain purified proteins contained 122 amino acid residues and seven disulfide bonds with approximate molecular masses of 15 kDa and isoelectric points of 5.3. The respective N-terminal sequences were: SIIISPIIA-SLWQFGKMIDYVMGEEGAKS; SIIISPIIB-SLWQFGKMIFYTGKNEPVLS; SIIISPIIIA-SLWQFGKMILYVMGGEGVKQ and SIIISPIIIB-SLWQFGKMIFYEMTGEGVL. Crystals of the acidic protein SIIISPIIIB diffracted beyond 1.8 Angstrom resolution. These crystals are monoclinic with unit cell dimensions of a = 40.1 Angstrom, b = 54.2 Angstrom and c = 90.7 Angstrom. The crystal structure has been refined to a crystallographic residual of 16.1% (R-free = 22.9%). Specific catalytic activity (U/mg) of the isolated acidic PLA(2)s were SIIISPIIA = 290.3 U/mg; SIIISPIIB = 279.0 U/mg; SIIISPIIIA = 270.7 U/mg and SIIISPIIIB = 96.5 U/mg. Although their myotoxic activity was low, SIIISPIIA, SIIISPIIIB and SIIISPIIIA showed significant anticoagulant activity. However, there was no indirect hemolytic activity. SIIISPIIIB revealed no anticoagulant, but presented indirect hemolytic activity. With the exception of SIIISPIIIB, which inhibited platelet aggregation, all the others were capable of inducing time-independent edema. Chemical modification with 4-bromophenacyl bromide did not inhibit the induction of edema, but did suppress other activities. (C) 2003 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. Polycrystalline tin oxide thin films were prepared from ethanol solution of SnCl2.H2O (concentrations: 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mol/dm(3)) at different substrate temperatures ranging from 300 to 450 degreesC. The kinetic deposition processes were studied in terms of various process parameters. The crystal phases, crystalline structure, grain size and surface morphology are revealed in accordance to X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Texture coefficients (TCs) for (110), (2 0 0), (2 11) and (3 0 1) reflections of the tetragonal SnO2 were calculated. Structural characteristics of deposited films with respect to varying precursor chemistry and substrate temperature are presented and discussed. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The X-ray reflectivity technique was applied in the study of tin oxide films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating on borosilicate glasses. The influence of the withdrawal speed and temperature of thermal treatment on the film structure was analyzed. We have compared the thermal evolution of the density and the shrinkage of the films with these properties measured for the monolithic xerogel by helium picnometry and thermomechanical analysis. In agreement with the Landau-Levich model, the layer thickness increases by increasing the withdrawal speed. Nevertheless, it decreases with the increase of the thermal treatment temperature, due to the densification process. The values of apparent density are smaller than the skeletal density, which shows that the films are porous. The comparison between the film and the monolith indicates that shrinkage during firing is anisotropic, occurring essentially perpendicular to the coating surface.

The synthesis, structural characterization, voltammetric experiments and antibacterial activity of [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] were studied and compared with similar previously reported copper complexes. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O crystallized in a monoclinic system, space group C2/c where the nickel ion was in a slightly distorted octahedral environment, coordinated with two sulfisoxazole molecules through the heterocyclic nitrogen and four water molecules. [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] crystallized in a orthorhombic crystal system, space group Pnab. The nickel ion was in a distorted octahedral environment, coordinated by two aryl amine N from two sulfonamides acting as monodentate ligands and four N atoms (two sulfonamidic N and two heterocyclic N) from two different sulfonamide molecules acting as bidentate ligands. Differential pulse voltammograms were recorded showing irreversible peaks at 1040 and 1070 mV, respectively, attributed to Ni(II)/Ni(III) process. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] presented different antibacterial behavior against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from the similar copper complexes and they were inactive against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We developed 15 new polymorphic microsatellites for the plethodontid salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii. Loci were isolated from a genomic library from Ensatina eschscholtzii xanthoptica enriched for (AAAG)(n) repetitive elements. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 20 (mean 9) in the sampled population. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.37 to 1. None of the loci deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium or showed significant linkage disequilibrium after a Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. All loci amplified in the six other subspecies of the Ensatina eschscholtzii complex. These new markers will prove useful in measuring gene flow and population structure as well as patterns of mating and sperm use in Ensatina.

SrBi2(Ta0.5Nb0.48W0.02)(2)O-9 powders (SBTN-W) were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The influence of annealing temperature on the phase formation and specific surface area was evaluated. TG/DTA associated with X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed the formation of perovskite phase at around 500-600 degrees C. An orthorhombic structure with A21am space group was identified by Rietveld refinement. BET analysis revealed that the specific surface area reduces with increasing thermal annealing. SEM micrographies showed grains in an almost-spherical morphology with the presence of agglomerates. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Solid-state Ln(L)(3) compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y and L is 2-methoxybenzoate have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results provided information on the composition, dehydration, coordination mode, structure, thermal behaviour and thermal decomposition.
