This paper shows that penetration of the applied electric field into the electrodes of a ferroelectric thin film capacitor produces both an interfacial capacitance and an effective mechanism for electron tunneling. The model predictions are compared with experimental results on Au-BST-SrRuO3 capacitors of varying thicknesses, and the agreement is excellent.

The influence of the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) plasticizer content and molecular weight on the physicochemical properties of films cast from aqueous blends of poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) (PMVE/MA) was investigated with tensile mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and attenuated total reflectance/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Unplasticized films and those containing high copolymer contents were very difficult to handle and proved difficult to test. PEG with a molecular weight of 200 Da was the most efficient plasticizer. However, films cast from aqueous blends containing 10% (w/w) PMVE/MA and either PEG 1000 or PEG 10,000 when the copolymer/plasticizer ratio was 4 : 3 and those cast from aqueous blends containing 15% (w/w) PMVE/MA and either PEG 1000 or PEG 10,000 when the copolymer/plasticizer ratio was 2 : 1 possessed mechanical properties most closely mimicking those of a formulation we have used clinically in photodynamic therapy. Importantly, we found previously that films cast from aqueous blends containing 10% (w/w) PMVE/MA performed rather poorly in the clinical setting, where uptake of moisture from patients' skin led to reversion of the formulation to a thick gel. Consequently, we are now investigating films cast from aqueous blends containing 15% (w/w) PMVE/MA and either PEG 1000 or PEG 10,000, where the copolymer/plasticizer ratio is 2 : 1, as possible Food and Drug Administration approved replacements for our current formulation, which must currently be used only on a named patient basis as its plasticizer, tripropylene glycol methyl ether, is not currently available in pharmaceutical grade

The objective of this work was to study the textural properties of edible films made from sour (acid) whey for food wrapping application. Acid whey is often regarded as a waste product, obtained as a watery effluent in the manufacturing of cottage cheese. In general, owing to its high nutritional value, whey has gained importance as an additive in food manufacturing processes and in health drink formulations. In this work, fresh sour whey was used to make edible films. The proteins in the whey were concentrated by ultrafiltration to reduce the water content. Only natural ingredients such as acid whey and agar were used to form the film under controlled heating (650 W) in a microwave oven. The structural and surface characteristics of the films were tested by a texture analyser and scanning electron micrographs.

Scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip-induced light emission from Au and Ag has been studied. Thin film samples similar to100nm thick were prepared by thermal evaporation at 0.5nm/s onto a room-temperature glass substrate to produce grains of 20-50nm in lateral dimension at the surface. Light emission from the samples in the STM was quasi-simultaneously recorded with the topography, at 1.8V tip bias and 3-40nA current, alternating pixel by pixel at the same bias. Typically, a surface scan range of 150 nm x 150 nm was surveyed. Au, W and PtIr tips were used.

Cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), Thionine (TH) and Basic Fuschin (BF), but not anionic dyes, such as Acid Orange 7 (AO7), Acid Blue 9 (AB9) and Acid Fuschin (AF), are readily adsorbed onto mesoporous titania films at high pH (pH 11), i.e. well above the pzc of titania (pH 6.5), due to electrostatic forces of attraction and repulsion, respectively. The same anionic dyes, but not the cationic dyes, are readily adsorbed on the same titania films at low pH (pH 3), i.e. well below titania's pzc. MB appears to adsorb on mesoporous titania films at pH 11 as the trimer (lambda(max) = 570 nm) but, upon drying, although the trimer still dominates, there is an absorption peak at 665 nm, especially notable at low [MB], which may be due to the monomer, but more likely MB J-aggregates. In contrast, the absorption spectrum of AO7 adsorbed onto the mesoporous titania film at low pH is very similar to the dye monomer. For both MB and AO7 the kinetics of adsorption are first order and yield high rate constants (3.71 and 1.481 g(-1) min(-1)), indicative of a strong adsorption process. Indeed, both MB and AO7 stained films retained much of their colour when left overnight in dye-free pH 11 and 3 solutions, respectively, indicating the strong nature of the adsorption. The kinetics of the photocatalytic bleaching of the MB-titania films at high pH are complex and not well-described by the Julson-Ollis kinetic model [A.J. Julson, D.F. Ollis, Appl. Catal. B. 65 (2006) 315]. Instead, there appears to be an initial fast but not simple demethylation step, followed by a zero-order bleaching and further demethylation steps. In contrast, the kinetics of photocatalytic bleaching of the AO7-titania film give a good fit to the Julson-Ollis kinetic model, yielding values for the various fitting parameters not too dissimilar to those reported for AO7 adsorbed on P25 titania powder. Ethanol adsorption-desorption isotherms on well-organized mesoporous silica and titania films with hexagonal pores structure were studied by ellipsometric porosimetry. The mesopore volume Was calculated from the change of the effective refractive index at the end points of the isotherm. An improved Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer (IDBdB) model for cylindrical pores is proposed for the determination of the pore size. In this model, the disjoining pressure isotherms were obtained by measuring the thickness of the ethanol film on a non-porous film with the same chemical composition. This approach eliminates uncertainties related to the application of the statistical film thickness determined via t-plots in previous versions of the DBdB model. The deviation in the surface tension of ethanol in the mesopores from that of a flat interface was described by the Tolman parameter in the Gibbs-Tolman-Koening-Buff equation. A positive value of the Tolman parameter of 0.2 nm was found from the fitting of the desorption branch of the isotherms to the experimental data obtained by Low Angle X-ray Diffraction (LA-XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurements in the range of pore diameters between 2.1 and 8.3 nm. The effect of Al incorporation and pH adjustment during hydrolysis of the silica precursor on the thermal and structural stability of ordered microporous silica films with a 2D structure is presented. The structural stability of the films was determined from a combination of LA XRD/TEM data with porosity data obtained from ethanol adsorption isotherms. Thermogravimetric analysis and MR data were used to determine the template removal and the thermal stability. Stability of aluminium incorporated silica films has further been examined in several organic solvents with different polarity. A solvent with a higher polarity interacts more strongly with the films; the long-order structure disappeared after exposure to polar solvents. After exposure to non-polar solvents, the pore size uniformity was retained after 48 h. The samples with an Al/Si ratio of 0.007 showed the smallest d-spacing shift after exposure to hexane. The stability was further tested in the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene performed in a batch reactor over 1 wt.% Pd/Si(Al)O-2/Si (Al/Si = 0.007) films at 30 degrees C and 10 bar H-2 with hexane as solvent. No deactivation was observed in two subsequent hydrogenation runs. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The photomineralisation of soot by P25 titania films is studied using FT-IR and the process shown to involve the oxidation of carbon to CO2 exclusively. The efficiency of this process is low, however, with a formal quantum efficiency of 1.1 X 10(-4) molecules of carbon oxidized per incident photon of UVA light. The cause of this low efficiency is attributed largely to the less than intimate contact between the fibrous soot layer and the surface of the photocatalyst. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Freestanding films containing nanocrystalline TiO2 and a suitable electron donor embedded in a cellulose matrix deoxygenate a closed environment (see Figure) upon UV illumination as a result of the photocatalytic properties of TiO2. This opens up the potential use of semiconductor photocatalysis in active packaging to achieve light-driven deoxygenation of closed environments.

A novel route involving atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition (APCVD) is reported for coating Nb2O5 onto glass substrates via the reaction of NbCl5 and ethyl acetate at 400-660degreesC. Raman spectroscopy is shown to be a simple diagnostic tool for the analysis of these thin films. The contact angle of water on Nb2O5-coated glass drops on UV irradiation from 60degrees to 5-20degrees. XPS Analysis showed that the Nb:O ratio of the film was 1:2.5. Glancing angle X-ray diffraction showed that all films were crystalline, with only a single phase being observed; this has some preferred orientation in the (201) plane of Nb2O5. The niobium(V) oxide materials show minimal photocatalytic ability to degrade organic material.
