The paper presents the results of a multi-year baseline study project in which 10 sectors ranging from agriculture to natural hazards were assessed by a transdisciplinary Swiss–Tajik research team. This knowledge base was enhanced in a development strategy workshop that brought together stakeholders from the local to the international levels. The methodology applied was found appropriate to initiate a broad reflection and negotiation process among various stakeholder groups, leading to a joint identification of possible measures to be taken. Knowledge—and its enhancement through the involvement of all stakeholder levels— appeared to be an effective carrier of innovation and changes of attitudes, thus containing the potential to effectively contribute to sustainable development in marginalized and resource-poor mountain areas.

The data collection "Deep Drilling of Glaciers: Soviet-Russian projects in Arctic, 1975-1995" was collected by the following basic considerations: - compilation of deep (>100 m) drilling projects on Arctic glaciers, using data of (a) publications; (b) archives of IGRAN; (c) personal communication of project participants; - documentation of parameters, references. Accuracy of data and techniques applied to determine different parameters are not evaluated. The accuracy of some geochemical parameters (up to 1984 and heavy metalls) is uncertain. Most reconstructions of ice core age and of annual layer thickness are discussed; - digitizing of published diagrams (in case, when original numerical data were lost) and subsequent data conversion to equal range series and adjustment to the common units. Therefore, the equal-range series were calculated from original data or converted from digitized chart values as indicated in the metadata. For the methodological purpose, the equal-range series obtained from original and reconstructed data were compared repeatedly; the systematic difference was less then 5-7%. Special attention should be given to the fact, that the data for individual ice core parameters varies, because some parameters were originally measured or registered. Parameters were converted in equal-range series using 2 m steps; - two or more parameter values were determined, then the mean-weighted (i.e. accounting the sample length) value is assigned to the entire interval; - one parameter value was determined, measured or registered independently from the parameter values in depth intervals which over- and underlie it, then the value is assigned to the entire interval; - one parameter value was determined, measured or registered for two adjoining depth intervals, then the specific value is assigned to the depth interval, which represents >75% of sample length ; if each of adjoining depth intervals represents <75% of sample length, then the correspondent parameter value is assigned to both intervals of depth. This collection of ice core data (version 2000) was made available through the EU funded QUEEN project by S.M. Arkhipov, Moscow.

The Ninetyeast Ridge lavas have Sr and Nd isotopic ratios intermediate between those of Indian Ocean MORBs and those of the very enriched Kerguelen hot spot. In an Nd-Sr isotope diagram, they also plot close to the fields of St. Paul Island lavas and of the early magmatism on Kerguelen Archipelago. The Ninetyeast Ridge lavas were generated by mixing among at least three components: a depleted, MORB-type component, such as the one erupted today on the Southeast Indian Ridge; a very enriched, high- Sr/ Sr, low-epsilon-Nd, OIB-type component (the Kerguelen hot spot); and an OIB-type component comparable to that sampled from the St. Paul (and Amsterdam) lavas. The Ninetyeast Ridge lavas show a typical Dupal anomaly signature and Pb, Sr, and Nd isotopic systematics indicate that the Kerguelen hot spot was involved in the ridge's formation as the Indian plate moved northward. The different sites cored during ODP Leg 121 show a trend in their isotopic compositions, from less radiogenic Pb/ Pb ratios and intermediate 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/**Nd ratios in the oldest lavas (Site 758) toward more radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb, higher epsilon-Nd, and lower 87Sr/86Sr values in the youngest lavas (Site 756). The lavas from Site 757 have 206Pb/204Pb ratios intermediate between those of the lavas from Sites 756 and 758 and higher 87Sr/86Sr and lower epsilon-Nd values. The relative proportions of the hot spot(s) and MORB component have evolved with time, reflecting differences of tectonic setting: the relative proportion of the Kerguelen hot spot component appears lower in the younger Site 756 lavas than in the older lavas from Sites 757 and 758. Site 756 coincides with the beginning of rifting at the Southeast Indian Ridge, about 43 Ma ago. The formation of the early Kerguelen Archipelago lavas may have drained most of the plume-derived material toward the Antarctic plate. Alternatively, the proximity of the spreading-ridge axis may account for the isotopic similarity of the Site 756 lavas to young lavas erupted on the Southeast Indian Ridge, from 33? to 37?S. The older lavas of Ninetyeast Ridge may have formed when the hot spot and ridge axis did not exactly coincide. The involvement of the third component, a St. Paul hot spot, in the genesis of the Ninetyeast Ridge lavas, especially for the Site 756 lavas, is clearly indicated by Sr, Pb, and Nd isotope systematics and also by trace element ratios. These data, together with those from the Kerguelen Plateau, indicate that the Kerguelen hot spot has been active more or less continuously in the South Indian Ocean for at least 115 Ma. This could indicate that the plume, and by inference the Dupal anomaly, is deep seated in origin.

Paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic analyses from discrete samples of carbonate sites on the Queensland Plateau were used to determine magnetic polarity reversal stratigraphy and the nature of magnetization in these sediments. Magnetic polarity zones were correlated with the geomagnetic polarity time scale in the upper portions of cores at Sites 812 through 814, usually back to a late Pliocene age. Loss of reliable directional data was coincidental with a major decrease in magnetic intensity, below which, no stable polarity zones could be identified. The intensity reduction is either an in-situ alteration of magnetic grains, or an input signal representing progressive increase in the magnetic component of Queensland Plateau sediments. Although not conclusive at this point, the geochemical conditions and differing age of intensity reduction support the former hypothesis. Rock-magnetic analysis of carbonate sediments suggests that ultrafine-grained magnetite or maghemite crystals is an important carrier of remanence and may be biogenic in origin. Application of a recently calibrated anhysteretic remanent magnetization test to assess configuration of single-domain crystal within a natural matrix indicates that cementation (ooze-chalk-limestone) may be important in post-depositional changes affecting magnetostatic grain interaction.

This work describes the structural and piezoelectric assessment of aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films deposited by pulsed-DC reactive sputtering on insulating substrates. We investigate the effect of different insulating seed layers on AlN properties (crystallinity, residual stress and piezoelectric activity). The seed layers investigated, silicon nitride (Si3N4), silicon dioxide (SiO2), amorphous tantalum oxide (Ta2O5), and amorphous or nano-crystalline titanium oxide (TiO2) are deposited on glass plates to a thickness lower than 100 nm. Before AlN films deposition, their surface is pre-treated with a soft ionic cleaning, either with argon or nitrogen ions. Only AlN films grown of TiO2 seed layers exhibit a significant piezoelectric activity to be used in acoustic device applications. Pure c-axis oriented films, with FWHM of rocking curve of 6º, stress below 500 MPa, and electromechanical coupling factors measured in SAW devices of 1.25% are obtained. The best AlN films are achieved on amorphous TiO2 seed layers deposited at high target power and low sputtering pressure. On the other hand, AlN films deposited on Si3N4, SiO2 and TaOx exhibit a mixed orientation, high stress and very low piezoelectric activity, which invalidate their use in acoustic devices.

We studied a series of square lattice antidot arrays, with diameter and lattice parameter from hundreds of nanometers to some microns, fabricated using two lithography techniques in epitaxial Fe(001) films. The coercivity increase of each array with respect to its base film can be scaled to a simple geometric parameter, irrespective of the lithography technique employed. Magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy studies, in arrays fabricated on polycrystalline Fe films deposited on silicon nitride membranes, evidenced the propagation of reversed domains from the edges of the arrays, in agreement with the coercivity analysis of the epitaxial arrays and with micromagnetic models.

Visually impaired people have many difficulties when traveling because it is impossible for them to detect obstacles that stand in their way. Bats instead of using the sight to detect these obstacles use a method based on ultrasounds, as their sense of hearing is much more developed than that of sight. The aim of the project is to design and build a device based on the method used by the bats to detect obstacles and transmit this information to people with vision problems to improve their skills. The method involves sending ultrasonic waves and analyzing the echoes produced when these waves collide with an obstacle. The sent signals are pulses and the information needed is the time elapsed from we send a pulse to receive the echo produced. The speed of sound is fixed within the same environment, so measuring the time it takes the wave to make the return trip, we can easily know the distance where the object is located. To build the device we have to design the necessary circuits, fabricate printed circuit boards and mount the components. We also have to design a program that would work within the digital part, which will be responsible for performing distance calculations and generate the signals with the information for the user. The circuits are the emitter and the receiver. The transmitter circuit is responsible for generating the signals that we will use. We use an ultrasonic transmitter which operates at 40 kHz so the sent pulses have to be modulated with this frequency. For this we generate a 40 kHz wave with an astable multivibrator formed by NAND gates and a train of pulses with a timer. The signal is the product of these two signals. The circuit of the receiver is a signal conditioner which transforms the signals received by the ultrasonic receiver in square pulses. The received signals have a 40 kHz carrier, low voltage and very different shapes. In the signal conditioner we will amplify the voltage to appropriate levels, eliminate the component of 40 kHz and make the shape of the pulses square to use them digitally. To simplify the design and manufacturing process in the digital part of the device we will use the Arduino platform. The pulses sent and received echoes enter through input pins with suitable voltage levels. In the Arduino, our program will poll these two signals storing the time when a pulse occurs. These time values are analyzed and used to generate an audible signal with the user information. This information is stored in the frequency of the signal, so that the generated signal frequency varies depending on the distance at which the objects are. RESUMEN Las personas con discapacidad visual tienen muchas dificultades a la hora de desplazarse ya que les es imposible poder detectar los obstáculos que se interpongan en su camino. Los murciélagos en vez de usar la vista para detectar estos obstáculos utilizan un método basado en ultrasonidos, ya que su sentido del oído está mucho más desarrollado que el de la vista. El objetivo del proyecto es diseñar y construir un dispositivo basado en el método usado por los murciélagos para detectar obstáculos y que pueda ser usado por las personas con problemas en la vista para mejorar sus capacidades. El método utilizado consiste en enviar ondas de ultrasonidos y analizar el eco producido cuando estas ondas chocan con algún obstáculo. Las señales enviadas tendrán forma de pulsos y la información necesaria es el tiempo transcurrido entre que enviamos un pulso y recibimos el eco producido. La velocidad del sonido es fija dentro de un mismo entorno, por lo que midiendo el tiempo que tarda la onda en hacer el viaje de ida y vuelta podemos fácilmente conocer la distancia a la que se encuentra el objeto. Para construir el dispositivo tendremos que diseñar los circuitos necesarios, fabricar las placas de circuito impreso y montar los componentes. También deberemos diseñar el programa que funcionara dentro de la parte digital, que será el encargado de realizar los cálculos de la distancia y de generar las señales con la información para el usuario. Los circuitos diseñados corresponden uno al emisor y otro al receptor. El circuito emisor es el encargado de generar las señales que vamos a emitir. Vamos a usar un emisor de ultrasonidos que funciona a 40 kHz por lo que los pulsos que enviemos van a tener que estar modulados con esta frecuencia. Para ello generamos una onda de 40 kHz mediante un multivibrador aestable formado por puertas NAND y un tren de pulsos con un timer. La señal enviada es el producto de estas dos señales. El circuito de la parte del receptor es un acondicionador de señal que transforma las señales recibidas por el receptor de ultrasonidos en pulsos cuadrados. Las señales recibidas tienen una portadora de 40 kHz para poder usarlas con el receptor de ultrasonidos, bajo voltaje y formas muy diversas. En el acondicionador de señal amplificaremos el voltaje a niveles adecuados además de eliminar la componente de 40 kHz y conseguir pulsos cuadrados que podamos usar de forma digital. Para simplificar el proceso de diseño y fabricación en la parte digital del dispositivo usaremos la plataforma Arduino. Las señales correspondientes el envío de los pulsos y a la recepción de los ecos entraran por pines de entrada después de haber adaptado los niveles de voltaje. En el Arduino, nuestro programa sondeara estas dos señales almacenando el tiempo en el que se produce un pulso. Estos valores de tiempo se analizan y se usan para generar una señal audible con la información para el usuario. Esta información ira almacenada en la frecuencia de la señal, por lo que la señal generada variará su frecuencia en función de la distancia a la que se encuentren los objetos.

El objetivo de este proyecto de investigación es analizar el conjunto de las diez series temporales, relativas a los precios de diez metales (plata, aluminio, oro, cobre, níquel, paladio, plomo, platino, estaño y zinc), comprendidos en el periodo de enero de 2008 a septiembre de 2013, con el objetivo de reducir la dimensionalidad del conjunto de datos y facilitar la comparación de los mismos y la predicción de valores futuros. Para ello pretendemos aplicar una metodología, que nos permitirá deducir, a partir de una serie resumen y de unos coeficientes multiplicativos, la evolución del comportamiento de cualquier otro metal. Pese a la escasísima documentación existente al respecto, se valorará e intentará aplicarse una reciente metodología denominada “Metodología del haz de rectas” Como herramienta de trabajo para los programas informáticos desarrollados y para representar las gráficas asociadas al proyecto, se utilizó Matlab®, habida cuenta de su enorme potencia y por disponer de un lenguaje de programación sencillo y lo suficientemente versátil para las tareas que necesitamos. The objective of this research project is to analyze the set of ten time series on prices of the ten metals (silver, aluminum, gold, copper, nickel, palladium, lead, platinum, tin and zinc), included in the period January 2008 to September 2013, with the aim of reducing the dimensionality of the data set and to facilitate comparison of the data and the prediction of future values To apply this methodology, allowing us to predict, from a series summarizes the evolution of the behavior of any other metal. The study of the performance of an innovative receiver for linear Fresnel reflectors is carried out in this paper, and the results are analyzed with a physics perspective of the process. The receiver consists of a bundle of tubes parallel to the mirror arrays, resulting on a smaller cross section for the same receiver width as the number of tubes increases, due to the diminution of their diameter. This implies higher heat carrier fluid speeds, and thus, a more effective heat transfer process, although it conveys higher pumping power as well. Mass flow is optimized for different tubes diameters, different impinging radiation intensities and different fluid inlet temperatures. It is found that the best receiver design, namely the tubes diameter that maximizes the exergetic efficiency for given working conditions, is similar for the cases studied. There is a range of tubes diameters that imply similar efficiencies, which can drive to capital cost reduction thanks to the flexibility of design. In addition, the length of the receiver is also optimized, and it is observed that the optimal length is similar for the working conditions considered. As a result of this study, it is found that this innovative receiver provides an optimum design for the whole day, even though impinging radiation intensity varies notably. Thermal features of this type of receiver could be the base of a new generation of concentrated solar power plants with a great potential for cost reduction, because of the simplicity of the system and the lower weigh of the components, plus the flexibility of using the receiver tubes for different streams of the heat carrier fluid.

The effects of power and time conditions of in situ N2 plasma treatment, prior to silicon nitride (SiN) passivation, were investigated on an AlGaN/GaN high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT). These studies reveal that N2 plasma power is a critical parameter to control the SiN/AlGaN interface quality, which directly affects the 2-D electron gas density. Significant enhancement in the HEMT characteristics was observed by using a low power N2 plasma pretreatment. In contrast, a marked gradual reduction in the maximum drain-source current density (IDS max) and maximum transconductance (gm max), as well as in fT and fmax, was observed as the N2 plasma power increases (up to 40% decrease for 210 W). Different mechanisms were proposed to be dominant as a function of the discharge power range. A good correlation was observed between the device electrical characteristics and the surface assessment by atomic force microscopy and Kelvin force microscopy techniques.

Freeze-fracture electron microscopy was used to study the structure of a human neuronal glutamate transporter (EAAT3). EAAT3 was expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes, and its function was correlated with the total number of transporters in the plasma membrane of the same cells. Function was assayed as the maximum charge moved in response to a series of transmembrane voltage pulses. The number of transporters in the plasma membrane was determined from the density of a distinct 10-nm freeze-fracture particle, which appeared in the protoplasmic face only after EAAT3 expression. The linear correlation between EAAT3 maximum carrier-mediated charge and the total number of the 10-nm particles suggested that this particle represented functional EAAT3 in the plasma membrane. The cross-sectional area of EAAT3 in the plasma membrane (48 ± 5 nm2) predicted 35 ± 3 transmembrane α-helices in the transporter complex. This information along with secondary structure models (6–10 transmembrane α-helices) suggested an oligomeric state for EAAT3. EAAT3 particles were pentagonal in shape in which five domains could be identified. They exhibited fivefold symmetry because they appeared as equilateral pentagons and the angle at the vertices was 110°. Each domain appeared to contribute to an extracellular mass that projects ≈3 nm into the extracellular space. Projections from all five domains taper toward an axis passing through the center of the pentagon, giving the transporter complex the appearance of a penton-based pyramid. The pentameric structure of EAAT3 offers new insights into its function as both a glutamate transporter and a glutamate-gated chloride channel.
