Sales configurators are essential tools for companies that offer complicated case specifically crafted products for customers. Most sophisticated of them are able to design an entire end product on the fly according to given constraints, calculate price for the offer and move the order into production. This thesis covers a sales configurator acquisition project in a large industrial company that offers cranes for its customers. The study spans the preliminary stages of a large-scale software purchase project starting from the specification of problem domain and ending up presenting the most viable software solution that fulfils the requirements for the new system. The project consists of mapping usage environment, use cases, and collecting requirements that are expected from the new system. The collected requirements involve fitting the new sales system into enterprise application infrastructure, mitigating the risks involved in the project and specifying new features to the application whilst preserving all of the admired features of the old sales system currently used in the company. The collected requirements were presented to a number of different sales software vendors who were asked to provide solution suggestions that would fulfil all the demands. All of the received solution proposals were exposed to an evaluation to determine the most feasible solutions, and the construction of evaluation criteria itself was a part of the study. The final outcome of this study is a short-list of the most feasible sales configurator solutions together with a description of how software purchase process in large enterprises work, and which aspects should be paid attention in large projects of similar kind.

The usual objectives that companies have for subcontracting are studied in this thesis. The case company’s objectives for contract manufacturing now and in the future are identified. The main objective of the thesis is to create a focused model for the structure and supply chain management in the contract manufacturing network. This model is made for case company’s certain profit center. The different possibilities and their advantages and disadvantages for the structure and supply chain management are examined trough a theoretical review of literature. The possibilities found are then examined from the case company’s point of view. The case company point of view is established based on the opinions of the case company’s representatives. The outcome of the thesis is that the star shaped structure with supply chain management centralized to case company would be the best choice for the case company to manage the contract manufacture network.

Global warming mitigation has recently become a priority worldwide. A large body of literature dealing with energy related problems has focused on reducing greenhouse gases emissions at an engineering scale. In contrast, the minimization of climate change at a wider macroeconomic level has so far received much less attention. We investigate here the issue of how to mitigate global warming by performing changes in an economy. To this end, we make use of a systematic tool that combines three methods: linear programming, environmentally extended input output models, and life cycle assessment principles. The problem of identifying key economic sectors that contribute significantly to global warming is posed in mathematical terms as a bi criteria linear program that seeks to optimize simultaneously the total economic output and the total life cycle CO2 emissions. We have applied this approach to the European Union economy, finding that significant reductions in global warming potential can be attained by regulating specific economic sectors. Our tool is intended to aid policymakers in the design of more effective public policies for achieving the environmental and economic targets sought.

Our first objective is to compare the degree of concentration in manufacturing and services, with special emphasis on its evolution in these two sectors, using a sensitivity analysis for different concentration indices and different geographic units of analysis: municipalities and local labour systems of Catalonia in 1991 and 2001. Most concentration measures fail to consider the space in which a particular municipality is located. Our second objective is to overcome this problem by applying two different techniques: by using a clustering measure, and by analysing whether the location quotients computed for each municipality and sector present some kind of spatial autocorrelation process. We take special account of the differences in patterns of concentration according to the technological level of the sectors.

In this paper we propose a latent variable model, in the spirit of Israilevich and Kuttner (1993), to measure regional manufacturing production. To test the validity of the proposed methodology, we have applied it for those Spanish regions that have a direct quantitative index. The results demonstrate the accuracy of the methodology proposed and show that it can overcome some of the difficulties of the indirect method applied by the INE, the Spanish National Institute of Statistics.

The soils of the world contain more carbon than the combined total amounts occurring in vegetation and the atmosphere. Hence soils are a major reservoir of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems and an important sink. Recently, emphasis has been placed on the need to sequester carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide into soil organic matter because of international concerns about greenhouse gas emissions and global climate change. The best strategies to built-up carbon stocks in the soil are basically those that increase the input of organic matter to the soil, and/or decrease the rate of soil organic matter decomposition. Grain crop systems based on soil ploughing and harrowing lead to CO2 emissions combined with tremendous soil losses. In Brazil, no-tillage system was introduced to combat soil erosion by water and this soil management led to the build-up of soil carbon stocks with simultaneous high crop yields. However, the present procedure used to quantify carbon stocks in soils is laborious and of high cost. The use of infrared spectroscopy is very promising as an alternative low-cost method of soil carbon determination.

Available empirical evidence regarding the degree of symmetry between European economies in the context of Monetary Unification is not conclusive. This paper offers new empirical evidence concerning this issue related to the manufacturing sector. Instead of using a static approach as most empirical studies do, we analyse the dynamic evolution of shock symmetry using a state-space model. The results show a clear reduction of asymmetries in terms of demand shocks between 1975 and 1996, with an increase in terms of supply shocks at the end of the period.

We assessed the effects of nutrient enrichment on three stream ecosystems running through distinct biomes (Mediterranean, Pampean and Andean). We increased the concentrations of N and P in the stream water 1.6–4-fold following a before–after control–impact paired series (BACIPS) design in each stream, and evaluated changes in the biomass of bacteria, primary producers, invertebrates and fish in the enriched (E) versus control (C) reaches after nutrient addition through a predictive-BACIPS approach. The treatment produced variable biomass responses (2–77% of explained variance) among biological communities and streams. The greatest biomass response was observed for algae in the Andean stream (77% of the variance), although fish also showed important biomass responses (about 9–48%). The strongest biomass response to enrichment (77% in all biological compartments) was found in the Andean stream. The magnitude and seasonality of biomass responses to enrichment were highly site specific, often depending on the basal nutrient concentration and on windows of ecological opportunity (periods when environmental constraints other than nutrients do not limit biomass growth). The Pampean stream, with high basal nutrient concentrations, showed a weak response to enrichment (except for invertebrates), whereas the greater responses of Andean stream communities were presumably favored by wider windows of ecological opportunity in comparison to those from the Mediterranean stream. Despite variation among sites, enrichment globally stimulated the algal-based food webs (algae and invertebrate grazers) but not the detritus-based food webs (bacteria and invertebrate shredders). This study shows that nutrient enrichment tends to globally enhance the biomass of stream biological assemblages, but that its magnitude and extent within the food web are complex and are strongly determined by environmental factors and ecosystem structure

Traditionally, researchers have considered the innovation process as being gender neutral. However, recently some studies have begun to take gender diversity into account as a determinant of firms’ innovation. This paper aims to analyse how the effect of gender diversity on innovation output at firm level is sensitive to team size. Using the Spanish PITEC (Panel de Innovación Tecnológica) from 2007 to 2012 for innovative manufacturing and service firms, we estimate a multivariate probit model to analyse how gender diversity both in R&D teams and in the total workforce affect product, process, marketing and organizational innovations. Our results show that gender-diverse teams increase the probability of innovating, and this capacity is positively related team size. Gender diversity, in both the R&D department and the total workforce, has a larger positive impact on the probability of carrying out product and organizational innovations in larger teams than it does in smaller teams. This effect is less clear-cut in the case of marketing and process innovation, where the impact is only significant for micro and small firms. Finally, size effects are of greater importance when we distinguish between the manufacturing and service sectors. JEL Code: O30, O31, J16

Organizing is a general problem for global firms. Firms are seeking a balance between responsiveness at the local level and efficiency through worldwide integration. In this, supply management is the focal point where external commercial supply market relations are connected with the firm's internal functions. Here, effective supplier relationship management (SRM) is essential. Global supply integration processes create new challenges for supply management professionals and new capabilities are required. Previous research has developed several models and tools for managers to manage and categorize different supplier relationship types, but the role of the firm's internal capability of managing supplier relationships in their global integration has been a clearly neglected issue. Hence, the main objective of this dissertation is to clarify how the capability of SRM may influence the firm's global competitiveness. This objective is divided into four research questions aiming to identify the elements of SRM capability, the internal factors of integration, the effect of SRM capability on strategy and how SRM capability is linked with global integration. The dissertation has two parts. The first part presents the theoretical approaches and practical implications from previous research and draws a synthesis on them. The second part comprises four empirical research papers addressing the research questions. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are utilized in this dissertation. The main contribution of this dissertation is that it aggregates the theoretical and conceptual perspectives applied to SRM research. Furthermore, given the lack of valid scales to measure capability, this study aimed to provide a foundation for an SRM capability scale by showing that the construct of SRM capability is formed of five separate elements. Moreover, SRM capability was found to be the enabler in efforts toward value chain integration. Finally, it was found that the effect of capability on global competitiveness is twofold: it reduces conflicts between responsiveness and integration, and it creates efficiency. Thus, by identifying and developing the firm's capabilities it is possible to improve performance, and hence, global competitiveness.

Voimistuvan kasvihuoneilmiön myötä kiinnostus hiilidioksidipäästöjen vähentämiseen on lisääntynyt. Ympäristöteknologian tavoitteena on hidastaa tämän ilmiön haitallisia vaikutuksia maailmanlaajuisesti, kansallisesti sekä yritystasolla. Yrityksillä on yhä suurempi paine valmistaa tuotteita ympäristöä vähemmän kuormittavasti. Tarkastelussa on keskitytty lähinnä hiilidioksidipäästöjen laskentaan. Työssä on käytetty elinkaariarvioinnin menetelmää ja työ noudattaa SFS ISO 14040 ja 14044 standardia. Elinkaariarviointi on hyväksi havaittu keino tunnistaa ne tuotteen tai palvelun yksikköprosessit, joilla on suurin vaikutus ympäristöön. Tutkimuksessa luotiin elinkaariarviointi pumppulaitoksen vuosittain tuottamille pumpuille. Samalla toteutettiin elinkaariarviointiin Excel-malli, jolla voidaan arvioida yksittäisten pumppujen valmistuksen hiilidioksidipäästöt. Tulosten pohjalta on tehty myös joitakin ehdotuksia pumpun valmistuksen hiilidioksidipäästöjen vähentämiseksi. Laskennassa käytetty aineisto kerättiin kirjallisuudesta, pumppulaitoksen alihankkijoilta sekä julkaistuista elinkaariarvioinneista vuoden 2008 kesän aikana. Työssä on osoitettu, että elinkaariarviointia voidaan hyödyntää tunnistettaessa pumpputehtaan ympäristötoimenpiteitä. Saatujen tulosten luotettavuus on kuitenkin riippuvainen käytettävissä olevista resursseista sekä lähtötietojen tarkkuudesta. Erityisesti valimoiden ilmoittamat energiankulutusmäärät vaikuttavat tulosten tarkkuuteen. Tarkempien tulosten saaminen edellyttäisi muun muassa tehtaan alihankkijoiden parempaa tietoisuutta omasta energiankulutuksestaan.
