The present study focuses on exploring air-assisted atomization strategies for effective atomization of high-viscosity biofuels, such as pure plant oils (PPOs). The first part of the study concerns application of a novel air-assisted impinging jet atomization for continuous spray applications, and the second part concerns transient spray applications. The particle/droplet imaging analysis (PDIA) technique along with direct imaging methods are used for the purpose of spray characterization. In the first part, effective atomization of Jatropha PPO is demonstrated at gas-to-liquid ratios (GLRs) on the order 0.1. The effect of liquid and gas flow rates on the spray characteristics is evaluated, and results indicate a Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 50 mu m is achieved with GLRs as low as 0.05. In the second part of the study, a commercially available air-assisted transient atomizer is evaluated using Jatropha PPO. The effect of the pressure difference across the air injector and ambient gas pressure on liquid spray characteristics is studied. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve the same level of atomization of Jatropha as diesel fuel by operating the atomizer at a higher pressure difference. Specifically, a SMD of 44 mu m is obtained for the Jatropha oil using injection pressures of <1 MPa. A further interesting observation associated with this injector is the near constancy of a nondimensional spray penetration rate for the Jatropha oil spray.

Biodiesel run engines are gaining popularity since the last few years as a viable alternative to conventional petro-diesel based engines. In biodiesel exhaust the content of volatile organic compounds, oil mist, and mass of particulate matter is considerably lower. However, the concentration of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) is relatively higher. In this paper the biodiesel exhaust from a stationary engine is treated under controlled laboratory conditions for removal of NOx using dielectric barrier discharge plasma in cascade with adsorbents prepared from abundantly available industrial waste byproducts like red mud and copper slag. Results were compared with gamma-alumina, a commercial adsorbent. Two different dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactors were tested for their effectiveness under Repetitive pulses /AC energization. NOx removal as high as 80% was achieved with pulse energized reactors when cascaded with red mud as adsorbent.

The concentration of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) in engines which use biodiesel as fuel is higher compared to conventional diesel engine exhaust. In this paper, an attempt has been made to treat this exhaust using a combination of High frequency AC (HFAC) plasma and an industrial waste, Red Mud which shows proclivity towards Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) adsorption. The high frequency AC source in combination with the proposed compact double dielectric plasma reactors is relatively more efficient in converting Nitric Oxide (NO) to NO2. It has been shown that the plasma treated gas enhances the activity of red mud as an adsorbent/catalyst and about 60-72% NOx removal efficiency was observed at a specific energy of 250 J/L. The advantage in this method is the cost effectiveness and abundant availability of the waste red mud in the industry. Further, power estimation studies were carried out using Manley's equation for the two reactors employed in the experiment and a close agreement between experimental and predicted powers was observed. In this second of the two-part study, the results of the Tank-to-Wheels study reported in the first part are combined with Well-to-Tank results in this paper to provide a comprehensive Well-to-Wheels energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions evaluation of automotive fuels in India. The results indicate that liquid fuels derived from petroleum have Well-to-Tank efficiencies in the range of 75-85% with liquefied petroleum gas being the most efficient fuel in the Well-to-Tank stage with 85% efficiency. Electricity has the lowest efficiency of 20% which is mainly attributed due to its dependence on coal and 25.4% losses during transmission and distribution. The complete Well-to-Wheels results show diesel vehicles to be the most efficient among all configurations, specifically the diesel-powered split hybrid electric vehicle. Hydrogen engine configurations are the least efficient due to low efficiency of production of hydrogen from natural gas. Hybridizing electric vehicles reduces the Well-to-Wheels greenhouse gas emissions substantially with split hybrid configuration being the most efficient. Electric vehicles do not offer any significant improvement over gasoline-powered configurations; however a shift towards renewable sources for power generation and reduction in losses during transmission and distribution can make it a feasible option in the future. 活塞的热疲劳性能对柴油发动机的全寿命至关重要。由于能量有限和可控性差等缺点,现有实验系统均不能满意地进行活塞热负荷模拟实验。为此,提出并建立了一套激光诱发活塞热负荷的实验系统。该系统通过对激光束的空间整形,使之投射到活塞表面后诱发的温度场分布满足特定要求。基于PROFIBUS-DP现场总线技术实现了系统集成和实验过程的全反馈控制。针对活塞的典型热负荷条件,即高周热疲劳和热冲击分别进行实验,以模拟正常工作循环和“启动一停车”等热负荷或转速突变工况。通过设置加热一冷却周期或上限下限温度,可以获得相应的热负荷模拟实验效果。研究结果表明,采用经光束整形的激光进行活塞热负荷模拟实验具有周期短、可控性好等优点。

研究了柴油、乙醇和水三组元乳化液的流变特性.实验发现乳化液在本文的组分配比下近似为牛顿流体,而且乳化剂的种类、含量以及乳化液的组分等均对乳化液的流变特性具有显著的影响.对于组分相同的乳化液,乳化液的粘度随着乳化剂含量和粘度的增加而增加;当乳化剂的含量和粘度相同时,若乙醇和水之间的相对质量分数保持不变,减少乳化液中柴油的含量(柴油不少于50%),乳化液的粘度随之增加.但是,柴油、乙醇和水三组元乳化液的粘度要比柴油、甲醇和水三组元乳化液的粘度大2到3倍.

De la semilla de tempate Jatropha curcus L.se extrae un aceite, que por medio de un proceso industrial sencillo, se obtienen un sustituto del diesel . con el fin de evaluar el efecto de dos metodos de siembraf dos sistemas de labranza sobre dos variedades, se establecieron 13 ensayos de campos en tres regiones del pais la region 11; las localidades de el torrero Cristo Rey,Monte Olivo, San Lucas, Los Vargas y Altos de La cruz (Cerro Negro), Santo Tomás del Norte, Salale, san Nicolas y El terrero. En la region V; Juigalpa y Santo Domingo y en la region VI; Sebaco,cada ensayó incluye ocho combinaciones de los tres factores en estudio (1} variedad (Nicaragua y Cabo Verde), {2) labranza ( convencional y minima), y (3) método de siembra (directa yen bolsa ). Los tratamientos fueron arreglados en un diseño de bloques completo al azar con cuatro re peticiones. Los costos de siembra mas bajos correspondieron a siembra directa con cero labranza y los costos mas a 1 tos fu ero n par a 1 a siembra en bolsa con labranza convencional. La mayor altura de planta se obtuvo con labranza convencional y siembra en bolsa en las localidades de Juigalpa. cristo Rey y El Trreon respectivamente. La variedad Cabo Verde obtuvo los mejores rendimientos en la mayoria de los tratamientos y localidades. En cuanto a manejo labranza convencional combinada con siembra en bolsa produjo los mayores rendimientos. La localidad con mejor rendimiento fue El Torreón con la variedad Cabo verde, labranza convencional y siembra en bolsa.

Thermal fatigue behavior is one of the foremost considerations in the design and operation of diesel engines. It is found that thermal fatigue is closely related to the temperature field and temperature fluctuation in the structure. In this paper, spatially shaped high power laser was introduced to simulate thermal loadings on the piston. The incident Gaussian beam was transformed into concentric multi-circular beam of specific intensity distribution with the help of diffractive optical element (DOE), and the transient temperature fields in the piston similar to those under working conditions could be achieved by setting up appropriate loading cycles. Simulation tests for typical thermal loading conditions, i.e., thermal high cycle fatigue (HCF) and thermal shock (or thermal low cycle fatigue, LCF) were carried out. Several important parameters that affect the transient temperature fields and/or temperature oscillations, including controlling mode, intensity distribution of shaped laser, laser power, temporal profile of laser pulse, heating time and cooling time in one thermal cycle, etc., were investigated and discussed. The results show that as a novel method, the shaped high power laser can simulate thermal loadings on pistons efficiently, and it is helpful in the study of thermal fatigue behavior in pistons. In the present paper, a multifluid model of two-phase flows with pulverized-coal combustion, based on a continuum-trajectory model with reacting particle phase, is developed and employed to simulate the 3-D turbulent two-phase hows and combustion in a new type of pulverized-coal combustor with one primary-air jet placed along the wall of the combustor. The results show that: (1) this continuum-trajectory model with reacting particle phase can be used in practical engineering to qualitatively predict the flame stability, concentrations of gas species, possibilities of slag formation and soot deposition, etc.; (2) large recirculation zones can be created in the combustor, which is favorable to the ignition and flame stabilization.

分别采用激光全息摄影技术和高速数字摄影技术观察了柴油、甲醇和水乳化液喷雾在高温高压(773K,3.1MPa)环境中发生微爆现象的瞬间和全过程,证实了微爆现象的存在.由于微爆机理的复杂性,尚难以用数学方法准确描述该过程.实验分析表明:若环境温度处于"最佳温度"范围内,乳化液滴表面首先形成"无水层",液滴内部形成一个水滴的概率很小,可能形成几个相对较大的水滴,只要其中一个较大水滴的蒸汽压力大于液滴的表面张力和环境压力之和,液滴就有可能发生微爆,微爆不仅与液滴直径、组分的质量分数和组分间的沸点差等乳化液的本身特性有关,而且环境温度和压力的影响也不容忽视.该研究可以为乳化液喷雾微爆过程的数学模拟提供参考.

采用自行配置的复合型乳化剂,通过超声波方法制得了柴油和水乳化液,并进行了相应乳化液的黏度特性实验.乳化液在给定组分配比下近似为牛顿流体,乳化剂种类、质量分数以及乳化液组分等均对乳化液的流变特性具有显著的影响.组分相同的乳化液,黏度随着乳化剂质量分数和黏度的增加而增加;当乳化剂质量分数和黏度相同时,乳化液的黏度随着乳化液中柴油质量分数(柴油不少于50%)的减少而增加.

为了降低发动机的有害排放物,以车用X6130柴油机为基础,研究开发了车用柴油/天然气双燃料发动机。首先确定双燃料发动机的技术方案,然后进行天然气/空气混合器的设计与实验,最后进行双燃料发动机的台架性能实验。实验结果表明:在全负荷时,与原型柴油机相比,双燃料发动机排气烟度明显降低,天然气替代率可超过70%,而输出转矩和输出功率并没有降低。同时证明提出的双燃料发动机技术方案是切实可行的。

In this paper the Deflagration to Detonation Transition (DDT) process of gaseous H-2-O-2 mixture and Mach reflection of gaseous detonation wave on a wedge have been conducted experimentally. The cellular pattern of DDT process and Mach reflection were obtained from experiments with wedge angle theta = 10(0) similar to 40(0) and initial pressure of gaseous mixture 16kPa similar to 26.7kPa. The 2-D numerical simulations of DDT process and Mach reflection of detonation wave were performed by using the simplified ZND model and improved space-time conservation element and solution element (CE/SE) method. The numerical cellular structures were compared with the cellular patterns of soot track. Compared results were shown that it is satisfactory. The characteristic comparisons on Mach reflection of air shock wave and detonation wave were carried also out and their differences were given.
