Positronium (Ps) formation in positron-helium scattering has been investigated in different partial waves at medium energies including the Ore gap region using the close-coupling approximation with realistic wavefunctions for the following states: He(1s1s), He(1s2s), He(1s2p), He(1s3s), He(1s3p), Ps(ls), Ps(2s), Ps(2p). Calculations are reported of rearrangement cross sections to Ps(ls), Ps(2s) and Ps(2p) states for incident positron energies up to 200 eV. The present partial cross sections are in good agreement with experimental results and a variational calculation in the Ore gap region.

Scattering of positronium (Ps) by sodium and potassium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(ls,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential fitted to reproduce accurate theoretical results for PsNa and PsK binding energies. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 4.58 eV of width 0.002 eV in the Ps-Na system and at 4.77 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-K system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.07 eV of width 0.3 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.3 eV in both systems. We also report results for elastic and Ps-excitation cross sections for Ps scattering by Na and K.

Objectives. This study compared the residual monomer (RM) in four hard chair-side reline resins (Duraliner II-D, Kooliner-K, Tokuso Rebase Fast-TRF and Ufi Gel hard-UGH) and one heat-polymerized denture base resin (Lucitone 550-L), which was processed using two polymerization cycles (short-LS and long-LL). It was also investigated the effect of two after polymerization treatments on this RM content.Methods. Specimens (n = 18) of each material were produced following the manufacturers' instructions and then divided into three groups. Group I specimens were left untreated (GI-control). Specimens of group II (GII) were given post-polymerization treatment by microwave irradiation. In group III (GIII), specimens were submitted to immersion in water at 55 degrees C (reline resins-10 min; denture base resin L-60min). The RM was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and expressed as a percentage of RM. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05).Results. Comparing control specimens, statistical differences were found among all materials (p < 0.05), and the results can be arranged as K (1.52%) > D (0.85%) > UGH (0.45%) > LL (0.24%) > TRF (0.14%) > LS (0.08%). Immersion in hot water (GIII) promoted a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the RM for all materials evaluated compared to control (GI), with the exception of LL specimens. Materials K, UGH and TRF exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) lower values of RM after microwave irradiation (GII) than in the control specimens.Significance. The reduction in RM promoted by water-bath and microwave post-polymerization treatments could improve the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the relining and denture base materials. Pure yttrium oxide or mixed with europium oxide (3 at%) were treated in supercritical isopropanolic suspension at 500degreesC for 20 It and filling degree of 50%. Products were supercritically dried and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and luminescence spectroscopy (LS). Particle shape is irregular with an equivalent diameter of ca. 5 mum. Cubic crystalline phase is mainly obtained and hydroxide ion in low concentration is detected by IR vibrational spectrum. Europium in this concentration does not extensively change such observed characteristics from the pure yttrium oxide. Luminescence spectra show that the doped product is a mixture of the two oxides added by oxyhydroxide impurities. Nevertheless, this precursor sample, after being heated at 900degreesC during 1 h, has all characteristics, especially luminescent ones, of the P22 commercial phosphor. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. (USA). Data on age at first kidding (IPP) were collected on seven farms in the Brazilian Southeastern region which explored breds. Least squares (LS) were used to evaluate the effects of environmental factors and to estimate variance components, and the derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood (DFREML) method was used to estimate the variance components of IPP and to genetically evaluate the goats used in the southest region of Brazil. The LS mean and standard error of IPP were 607.18 +/- 17.09 days. The interaction of year x kidding season had a significantly influenced IPP, indicating that management conditions varied among the seasons within each specific year, with a direct influence on body weight which is the main criterion adopted by farmers to decide when the animal is ready to breed. The effect of farm-breed combination influenced the IPP. The compararison among levels of farm-breed were done by cluster analysis. The results indicated that the individual goat management within each farm had a greater influence than breed, since goats of different breeds showed high and similar values on those farms having a high mean IPP. Heritability estimates obtained by LS using intraclass correlations among paternal half-sibs and those obtained by REML were 0.220 and 0.369, respectively.

The EU HIBISCUS project consisted of a series of field campaigns during the intense convective summers in 2001, 2003 and 2004 in the State of São Paulo in Brazil. Its objective was to investigate the impact of deep convection on the Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL) and the lower stratosphere by providing a new set of observational data on meteorology, tracers of horizontal and vertical transport, water vapour, clouds, and chemistry in the tropical Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere (UT/LS). This was achieved using short duration research balloons to study local phenomena associated with convection over land, and long-duration balloons circumnavigating the globe to study the contrast between land and oceans.Analyses of observations of short-lived tracers, ozone and ice particles show strong episodic local updraughts of cold air across the lapse rate tropopause up to 18 or 19 km (420-440 K) in the lower stratosphere by overshooting towers. The long duration balloon and satellite measurements reveal a contrast between the composition of the lower stratosphere over land and oceanic areas, suggesting significant global impact of such events. The overshoots are shown to be well captured by non-hydrostatic meso-scale Cloud Resolving Models indicating vertical velocities of 50-60 m s(-1) at the top of the Neutral Buoyancy Level (NBL) at around 14 km, but, in contrast, are poorly represented by global Chemistry-Transport Models (CTM) forced by Numerical Weather Forecast Models (NWP) underestimating the overshooting process. Finally, the data collected by the HIBISCUS balloons have allowed a thorough evaluation of temperature NWP analyses and reanalyses, as well as satellite ozone, nitrogen oxide, water vapour and bromine oxide measurements in the tropics.

This paper applies two methods of mathematical decomposition to carry out an optimal reactive power flow (ORPF) in a coordinated decentralized way in the context of an interconnected multi-area power system. The first method is based on an augmented Lagrangian approach using the auxiliary problem principle (APP). The second method uses a decomposition technique based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) first-order optimality conditions. The viability of each method to be used in the decomposition of multi-area ORPF is studied and the corresponding mathematical models are presented. The IEEE RTS-96, the IEEE 118-bus test systems and a 9-bus didactic system are used in order to show the operation and effectiveness of the decomposition methods.

The generation expansion planning (GEP) problem consists in determining the type of technology, size, location and time at which new generation units must be integrated to the system, over a given planning horizon, to satisfy the forecasted energy demand. Over the past few years, due to an increasing awareness of environmental issues, different approaches to solve the GEP problem have included some sort of environmental policy, typically based on emission constraints. This paper presents a linear model in a dynamic version to solve the GEP problem. The main difference between the proposed model and most of the works presented in the specialized literature is the way the environmental policy is envisaged. Such policy includes: i) the taxation of CO(2) emissions, ii) an annual Emissions Reduction Rate (ERR) in the overall system, and iii) the gradual retirement of old inefficient generation plants. The proposed model is applied in an 11-region to design the most cost-effective and sustainable 10-technology US energy portfolio for the next 20 years.

Responses of net photosynthetic rates to temperature, irradiance, pH/inorganic carbon and diurnal rhythm were analyzed in 15 populations of eight freshwater red algal species in culture and natural conditions. Photosynthetic rates were determined by oxygen concentration using the light and dark bottles technique. Parameters derived from the photosynthesis-irradiance curves indicated adaptation to low irradiance for all freshwater red algae tested, confirming that they tend to occur under low light regimes. Some degree of photoinhibition (β = -0.33-0.01 mg O2 g-1 DW h-1 (μmol photons m-2 s-1)-1) was found for all species/populations analyzed, whereas light compensation points (lc) were very low (≤ 2 μmol photons m- photons s-1) for most algae tested. Saturation points were low for all algae tested (lk = 6-54 μmol photons m-2 S-1; lS = 20-170 μmol photons m-2 s-1). Rates of net photosynthesis and dark respiration responded to the variation in temperature. Optimum temperature values for net photosynthesis were variable among species and populations so that best performances were observed under distinct temperature conditions (10, 15, 20 or 25°C). Rates of dark respiration exhibited an increasing trend with temperature, with highest values under 20-25°C. Results from pH experiments showed best photosynthetic performances under pH 8.5 or 6.5 for all but one species, indicating higher affinity for inorganic carbon as bicarbonate or indistinct use of bicarbonate and free carbon dioxide. Diurnal changes in photosynthetic rates revealed a general pattern for all algae tested, which was characterized by two relatively clear peaks, with some variations around it: a first (higher) during the morning (07.00-11.00 hours.) and a second (lower) in the afternoon (14.00-18.00 hours). Comparative data between the 'Chantransia' stage and the respective gametophyte for one Batrachospermum population revealed higher values (ca 2-times) in the latter, much lower than previously reported. The physiological role of the 'Chantransia' stage needs to be better analyzed.

Responses of photosynthetic rates, determined by oxygen evolution using the light and dark bottles technique, to different temperatures, irradiances, pH, and diurnal rhythm were analyzed under laboratory conditions in four charophyte species (Chara braunii Gmelin, C. guairensis R. Bicudo, Nitella subglomerata A. Braun and Nitella sp.) from Iotic habitats in southeastern Brazil. Parameters derived from the photosynthesis versus irradiance curves indicated affinity to low irradiances for all algae tested. Some degree of photoinhibition, [β = -(0.30-0.13) mg 02 g-1 dry weight h-1 (μmol photons m-2 s-1)-1], low light compensation points (lc = 4-20 μmol photons m-2 s-1) were found for all species analyzed, as well as low values of light saturation parameter (lk) and saturation (ls) 29-130 and 92-169 μmol photons m-2 S-1, respectively. Photoacclimation was observed in two populations of N. subglomerata collected from sites with different irradiances, consisting of variations in photosynthetic parameters (higher values of α, and lower of lk and maximum photosynthetic rate, Pmax, in the population under lower irradiance). The highest photosynthetic rates for Chara species were observed at 10-15°C, while for Nitella the highest photosynthetic rate was observed at 20-25°C, despite the lack of significant differences among most levels tested. Rates of dark respiration significantly increase with temperature, with the highest values at 25°C. The results from pH experiments showed highest photosynthetic rates under pH 4.0 for all algae, suggesting higher affinity for inorganic carbon in the form of carbon dioxide, except in one population of N. subglomerata, with similar rates under the three levels, suggesting indistinct use of bicarbonate and carbon dioxide. Diurnal changes in photosynthetic rates revealed a general pattern for most algae tested, which was characterized by two peaks: the first (higher) during the morning (07.00-11.00) and the second (lower) in the afternoon (14.00-17.00). This suggests an endogenous rhythm determining the daily variations in photosynthetic rates.
