In this work, Eu(III) and Eu(II) doped gadolinium silicates has been obtained as compact tubes starting from spherical gadolinium hydroxide carbonate using the pores of silica matrix as support and its surface as reagent. Eu(III) doped gadolinium silicate with hexagonal phase shows an interesting visible shifted charge transfer band when compared to disilicate with orthorhombic phase that was also obtained. Eu(II) gadolinium silicate has been prepared using CO atmosphere presenting an intense blue emission. The divalent europium system shows a potential application as an UV-blue converter. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Ti-Mo alloys from 4 to 20 Mo wt.% were arc-melted. Their compositions and surfaces were analyzed by EDX, XRF and SEM. The Mo mapping shows a homogeneous distribution for all alloys. The XRD analysis showed that the crystal structure of the alloys is sensitive to the Mo concentration; a mixture of the hexagonal alpha' and orthorhombic alpha '' phases was observed for the Ti-4Mo alloy, and the alpha '' phase is observed almost exclusively when the concentration of Mo added to the Ti reaches 6%. A significant retention of the beta phase is observed for the alloy containing 10% Mo, while at higher Mo concentrations (15% and 20%), retention of phase beta is only verified. Preliminary electrochemical studies have indicated a valve-metal behavior and good corrosion resistance in aerated Ringer solution for all alloys. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Polycrystalline SrTiO3 thin films having a cubic perovskite structure were prepared at different temperatures by the polymeric precursor method on platinum-coated silicon substrate. Crystalline films with uniform composition and thickness were prepared by spin-coating and the post-deposition heat treatment was carried out at different temperatures. The film showed good structural, dielectric, and insulating properties, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs showed no occurrence of interdiffusion between the bottom electrode (platinum) and the film during post-annealing, indicating a stable interface between the SrTiO3 and the bottom electrode. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 250 and 0.01, respectively, for a 360 nm thick film annealed at 600 degreesC. The capacitance versus applied voltage characteristics showed that the capacitance was almost independent of the applied voltage. The I-V characteristics were ohmic in low fields and a Schottky emission and/or Poole-Frenkel emission were postulated in high fields. Room temperature leakage current density was found to be in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2) for a 360 nm thick film in an applied electric field of about 100 kV/cm. The charge storage density of 36 fC/mum(2) was obtained in an applied electric field of about 100 kV/cm. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Transverse-optical (TO) and longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons of zinc blende InxGa1-xN (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.31) layers are observed through first-order micro-Raman scattering experiments. The samples are grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates, and x-ray diffraction measurements are performed to determine the epilayer alloy composition. Both the TO and LO phonons exhibit a one-mode-type behavior, and their frequencies display a linear dependence on the composition. The Raman data reported here are used to predict the A(1) (TO) and E-1 (TO) phonon frequencies of the hexagonal InxGa1-xN alloy. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(99)01234-6].

The aim of this work is to report on the luminescence properties of BaZnSiO4 activated by Eu3+ and Mn2+ ions. Doped and undoped powder samples were prepared by solid-state reaction starting from oxides and carbonates or Ba2SiO4:Eu3+ and Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ precursors. X-ray diffraction powder data, IR vibrational, and UV-vis luminescence spectroscopies were carried out. Results showed that doped and undoped samples from both types of precursors have the same structure and crystallize with a superstructure of hexagonal kalsilite. Vibrational spectroscopy has confirmed the formation of a silicate group, which outlines differences between products and silicate precursors. The observed luminescence assigned to Eu3+ and Mn2+ transitions covered most parts of the visible spectrum, an important requirement for phosphors in fluorescent low-pressure mercury vapor lamps.

Synthesis and self-assembly of nanomaterials can be controlled by the properties of soft matter. on one hand, dedicated nanoreactors such as reverse microemulsions or miniemulsions can be designed. on the other hand, direct shape control can be provided by the topology of liquid crystals that confine the reacting medium within a specific geometry. In the first case, the preparation of micro- or miniemulsions generally requires energetic mechanical stirring. The second approach uses thermodynamically stable systems, but it remains usually limited to binary (water + surfactant) systems. We report the preparation of different families of materials in highly ordered quaternary mediums that exhibit a liquid crystal structure with a high cell parameter. They were prepared with the proper ratios of salted water, nonpolar solvent, surfactant. and cosurfactants that form spontaneously swollen hexagonal phases. These swollen liquid crystals can be prepared from all classes of surfactants (cationic, anionic, and nonionic). They contain a regular network of parallel cylinders, whose diameters can be swollen with a nonpolar solvent, that are regularly spaced in a continuous aqueous salt solution. We demonstrate in the present report that both aqueous and organic phases can be used as nanoreactors for the preparation of materials. This property is illustrated by various examples such as the synthesis of platinum nanorods prepared in the aqueous phase or zirconia needles or the photo- or gamma-ray-induced polymerization of polydiacetylene in the organic phase. In all cases, materials can be easily extracted and their final shapes are directed by the structure-directing effect imposed by the liquid crystal.

This paper surveys the topology of macroporous silica prepared using latex templates covering the submicrometric range (0.1-0.7 mu m). The behavior of latex spheres in aqueous dispersion has been analyzed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement indicating the most appropriate conditions to form well-defined cubic arrays. The optical behavior of latex spheres has been analyzed by transmittance and reflectance measurements in order to determine their diameter and filling factor when they were assembled in bidimensional arrays. Macroscopic templates have been obtained by a centrifugation process and their crystalline ordering has been confirmed by porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy. These self-assembled structures have been used to produce macroporous silica, whose final topology depends on the pore size distribution of the original template. It has been seen that latex spheres are ordered in a predominant fcc arrangement with slipping of tetragonal pores due to the action of attractive electrostatic interactions. The main effect is to change the spherical shape of voids in macroporous silica into a hexagonal configuration with possible applications to fabricate photonic devices with novel optical properties. Recently, minimum and non-minimum delay perfect codes were proposed for any channel of dimension n. Their construction appears in the literature as a subset of cyclic division algebras over Q(zeta(3)) only for the dimension n = 2(s)n(1), where s is an element of {0,1}, n(1) is odd and the signal constellations are isomorphic to Z[zeta(3)](n) In this work, we propose an innovative methodology to extend the construction of minimum and non-minimum delay perfect codes as a subset of cyclic division algebras over Q(zeta(3)), where the signal constellations are isomorphic to the hexagonal A(2)(n)-rotated lattice, for any channel of any dimension n such that gcd(n,3) = 1. Alkaline earth stannates have recently become important materials in ceramic technology due to its application as humidity sensor. In this work, alkaline earth stannates doped with Fe3+ were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method, with calcination at 300 A degrees C/7 h and between 400 and 1100 A degrees C/4 h. The powder precursors were characterized by TG/DTA after partial elimination of carbon. Characterization after the second calcination step was done by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Results confirmed the formation of the SrSnO3:Fe with orthorhombic perovskite structure, besides SrCO3 as secondary phase. Crystallization occurred at 600 A degrees C, being much lower than the crystallization temperature of perovskites synthesized by solid state reaction. The analysis of TG curves indicated that the phase crystallization was preceded by two thermal decomposition steps. Carbonate elimination occurred at two different temperatures, around 800 A degrees C and above 1000 A degrees C.

Ultrafine ordered and disordered SrZrO3 powders were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The structural evolution from structural disorder to order was monitored by X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Complex cluster vacancies [ZrO5 center dot V-O(Z)] and [SrOII center dot V-O(Z)] (where V-O(Z) = V-O(X), V-O(center dot) and V-O(center dot center dot)) were proposed for disordered powders. The intense violet-blue light photoluminescence emission measured at room temperature in the disordered powders was attributed to complex cluster vacancies. High-level quantum mechanical calculations within the density functional theory framework were used to interpret the experimental results. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
