The size and distribution of surface features of porous silicon layers have been investigated by scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy. Pores and hillocks down to 1-2 nm size were observed, with their shape and distribution on the sample surface being influenced by crystallographic effects. The local density of electronic states show a strong increase above 2 eV, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

We report on the first study of N+ -implanted silicon on insulator by energy-filtered imaging using an Opton electron microscope CEM 902 equipped Castaing-Henry electron optical system as a spectrometer. The inelastic images, energy window set at DELTA-E = 16 eV and DELTA-E = 25 eV according to plasmon energy loss of crystal Si and of silicon nitride respectively, give much structure information. The interface between the top silicon layer and the upper silicon nitride layer can be separated into two sublayers.

We experimentally study the effect of perpendicular electric field on the exciton binding energy using a specially designed step quantum well. From photoluminescence spectra at the temperature of 77 K, we have directly observed remarkable blueshift of the exciton peak due to the transition from spatially direct to spatially indirect excitons induced by electric field. This paper presents a high speed ROM-less direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS) which has a phase resolution of 32 bits and a magnitude resolution of 10 bits. A 10-bit nonlinear segmented DAC is used in place of the ROM look-up table for phase-to-sine amplitude conversion and the linear DAC in a conventional DDFS.The design procedure for implementing the nonlinear DAC is presented. To ensure high speed, current mode logic (CML) is used. The chip is implemented in Chartered 0.35μm COMS technology with active area of 2.0 × 2.5 mm~2 and total power consumption of 400 mW at a single 3.3 V supply voltage. The maximum operating frequency is 850 MHz at room temperature and 1.0 GHz at 0 ℃.

The direct reduction of SO2 to elemental sulfur in flue gas by the coupling of cold plasma and catalyst, being a new approach for SO2 reduction, was studied. In this process, CO2 can be disassembled to form CO, which acts as the reductant under the cold plasma. With the coupling of the cold plasma and the catalyst, sulfur dioxide was selectively reduced by CO to elemental sulfur with a byproduct of metal sulfate, e.g., FeSO4. In the present work, Fe2O3/gamma-Al2O3 was employed as the catalyst. The extent of desulfurization was more than 80%, and the selectivity of elemental sulfur is about 55%. The effects of water vapor, temperature, and the components of simulated flue gas were investigated. At the same time, the coupling of thermogravimetry and infrared method and a chemical analysis method were employed to evaluate the used catalyst. In this paper, we will focus on the discussion of the catalyst. The discussions of the detail of plasma will be introduced in another paper.

The applicability of on-line coupling of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography to atmospheric pressure ionization tandem mass spectrometry for the separation and characterization of hop acids mixture from the crude extract of Humulus lupulus was investigated. The solvent system consisting of acetonitrile-aqueous formic acid was used to give proper separation of the six main hop bitter acids within 30 min. Further structural information about the components was acquired by collision-induced dissociation (CID). On the basis of analyses of the fragmentation patterns of the major alpha- and beta-bitter acids respectively, identification of the minor ones was performed using selected reaction monitoring (SRM) with a group of qualitatively relevant selected precursor-product ion transitions for each bitter acid in a single high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) run. Using this technique, six minor hop acids, including "adprelupulone" observed for the first time in natural resources, were detected along with the six major acids. This hyphenated techniques provides potency for rapid qualitative determination of analogs and homologs in mixtures. (C) 2004 American Society for Mass Spectrometry.

Black Pearls 2000 (designated as BP- 2000) and Vulcan XC-72 (designated as XC-72) carbon blacks were chosen as supports to prepare 40 wt % (the targeted value) Pt/C catalysts by a modified polyol process. The carbon blacks were characterized by N-2 adsorption and Fourier tranform infrared spectroscopy. The prepared catalysts were characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in situ cyclic voltammetry, and current-voltage curves. On BP- 2000, Pt nanoparticles were larger in size and more unevenly distributed than on XC-72. It was observed by SEM that the corresponding catalyst layer on BP- 2000 was thicker than that of XC-72 based catalyst at almost the identical catalyst loading. And the BP- 2000 supported catalyst gave a better single cell performance at high current densities. These results suggest that the performance improvement is due to the enhanced oxygen diffusion and water removal capability when BP- 2000 is used as cathode catalyst support. The environmentally friendly removal of NO has been investigated using continuous microwave discharge (CMD) at atmospheric pressure. In these experiments, conversions of NO to N-2 as well as NO2 were mainly observed for both dry and wet feed gas, which showed a great difference from those observed with other discharge methods. The effects of a series of reaction parameters, including microwave input power, O-2 concentration, NO concentration, and gas flow rate, on the product distribution and energy efficiency were also studied. Under all reaction conditions, the conversions of NO to N-2 were higher than those to NO2. The highest conversion of NO to N-2 was 88%. The reaction rate of NO removal and the effects of the different discharge modes on NO conversion and product distribution are also discussed. Through comparison of the results of different discharge modes, it was found that the addition of CH4 apparently increased the conversion of NO to N-2 as well as the energy efficiency. A possible reaction process is suggested.

A novel method for the determination of N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NGNA) has been developed using high-performance capillary electrophoresis with UV detection at 195 nm, without pre or post-column derivatisation. The acids were separated in a 50-cm, fused-silica capillary (50 mu m i.d, 45.5-cm effective length) with Na2B4O7-Na2HPO4 buffer. The detection limit for NANA is a concentration of 9.6 x 10(-6) M or, in terms of mass: 3.879 x 10(-14) mol (39 fmol). This method is applicable to determination of NANA in normal human serum. The results were also compared with those of the colorimetrie method.

Catalytic decomposition of NO was studied over Fe/NaZSM-5 catalyst. Novel results were observed with the microwave heating mode. The conversion of NO to N-2 increased remarkably with the increasing of Fe loading. The effects of a series of reaction parameters, including reaction temperature, O-2 concentration, NO concentration, gas flow rate and H2O addition, on the productivity of N-2 have been investigated. It is shown that the catalyst exhibited good endurance to excess O-2 in the microwave heating mode. Under all reaction conditions, NO converted predominantly to N-2. The highest conversion of NO to N-2 was up to 70%. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

It was found that Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) possess intrinsic enzyme mimetic activity similar to that found in natural peroxidase. Here, we applied Fe3O4 NPs to the construction of efficient electrochemical sensor to detect the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The sensor was fabricated with layer-by-layer assembly of Fe3O4 NPs and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) through the electrostatic interaction, and the multilayer film was characterized with UV-vis absorption spectra, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry.

It is discovered that SBA-15 (santa barbara amorphous) can provide the favorable microenvironments and optimal direct electron-transfer tunnels (DETT) of immobilizing cytochrome c (Cyt c) by the preferred orientation on it. A high-redox potential (254 mV vs. Ag/AgCl) was obtained on glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified by immobilizing Cyt c on rod-like SBA-15. With ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), circular dichroism (CD), FTIR and cyclic voltammetry, it was demonstrated that immobilization made Cyt c exhibits stable and ideal electrochemical characteristics while the biological activity of immobilized Cyt c is retained as usual.
