This paper describes the preparation, characterization, and use of poly (methylene blue) (PMB)-modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) (GCE-PMB) in the detection of the thiols L-cysteine (L-CySH) and N-acetyl cysteine (Acy), and the herbicide glyphosate (GLYP) in pH 5.3 aqueous solution. The polymer film prepared by electropolymerization showed different characteristics such as robustness, stability, and redox properties satisfactorily. The surface coverage concentration (Gamma) of PMB was found to be 7.90 x 10(-9) - mol cm(-2). Moreover, we observed strong adhesion of the polymer film to the electrode surface. The results using GCE-PMB as a sensor indicated that this modified electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the detection of thiols and glyphosate in 0.1 mol L-1 KO (pH 5.3). Meanwhile, strong adsorption of the analytes on the GCE-PMB electrodes was also observed. Otherwise, using a low concentration (1 x 10(-4) mol L-1) of L-cysteine and N-acetyl cysteine and 8.9 x 10(-6) mol L-1 of glyphosate, separately, it was possible to observe a well-defined electrochemical response, thus providing an opportunity to further understand the applicability of PMB as a sensor for amino acid-based molecules. We used an assembly of electrodes C3 and C4-Cz in order to activate the motor cortical area of the corticobulbar tract to elucidate the motor-evoked potential of the contralateral mentalis muscle. We compared this setup to that of an assembly with electrodes C5 or C6-Cz using a train of electrical pulses and a single electrical pulse. This analysis was made in 23 consecutive patients who underwent several varied surgeries and were prospectively operated on at Santa Paula Hospital between January and June 2011. The results showed that the assembly with C5 or C6-Cz produced a multisynaptic motor-evoked potential in the contralateral mentalis muscle in 86.9 % of the patients, whereas 82.6 % of patients stimulated at points C3 or C4-Cz presented the same response. However, both assemblies showed similar behavior with the use of a single electrical pulse for peripheral contralateral nerve stimulation. We concluded that the C5 or C6-Cz assembly was similar to C3 or C4-Cz in obtaining a multisynaptic response in the contralateral mentalis muscle, although it required less intensive stimulation than the C3 or C4- Cz assembly.

Objectives: To establish normative amplitude values for relative difference measurements of the middle latency response (MLR) in normal-hearing pediatrics and to determine if these measurements provided a significant reduction of within-group variability when compared to raw, absolute amplitude measures. A relative amplitude difference is defined in the present paper as the difference in Na-Pa amplitude between two electrodes (e.g. vertical bar Na-Pa at C3 minus Na-Pa at C4 vertical bar, or electrode effects) or between two ears (e.g. vertical bar Na-Pa on left ear stimulation minus Na-Pa on right ear stimulation vertical bar, or ear effects). In contrast, an absolute amplitude is defined as a single Na-Pa measurement made at one electrode for stimulation of one ear (e.g. Na-Pa measured at C3 on left ear stimulation). Design: Cross-sectional study. Study sample: 155 pediatrics with normal peripheral and central hearing, and no history of psychological, neurological, or learning disability issues. Results: Within-group variability was significantly smaller for relative differences when compared to absolute amplitude measures. Electrode effects showed significantly less variability than ear effects. Normative values for ear and electrode effects were reported. Conclusions: Relative differences may provide better utility in the clinical diagnosis of central auditory pathology in pediatrics when compared to absolute amplitude measures because these difference measures show significantly lower variability when examined across subjects.

ELECTROCHEMICAL OXIDATION OF THE HERBICIDE TEBUTHIURON USING DSA (R)-TYPE ELECTRODE. Tebuthiuron (TBH) is a herbicide widely used in different cultures and known for its toxic effects. Electrochemical methods are promising for removing pollutants such as pesticides. This study showed the degradation of TBH using a DSA (R) anode operated at current densities of 50 to 200 mA cm(-2). Removal presented pseudo-first order kinetics while high-pressure liquid chromatography (UV detection) showed two peaks, ascribed to degradation intermediates. The maximum percentage of total organic carbon removed was 12.9%. Ion chromatography revealed that higher concentrations of nitrate and nitrite ions formed with increasing current density.

The main goal of this work was to develop a simple analytical method for quantification of glycerol based on the electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol on the copper surface adapted in a flow injection system. Under optimal experimental conditions, the peak current response increases linearly with glycerol concentration over the range 60-3200 mg kg(-1) (equivalent to 3-160 mg L(-1) in solution). The repeatability of the electrode response in the flow injection analysis (FIA) configuration was evaluated as 5% (n = 10), and the detection limit of the method was estimated to be 5 mg kg(-1) in biodiesel (equivalent to 250 mu g L(-1) in solution) (S/N = 3). The sample throughput under optimised conditions was estimated to be 90 h(-1). Different types of biodiesel samples (B100), as in the types of vegetable oils or animal fats used to produce the fuels, were analysed (seven samples). The only sample pre-treatment used was an extraction of glycerol from the biodiesel sample containing a ratio of 5 mL of water to 250 mg of biodiesel. The proposed method improves the analytical parameters obtained by other electroanalytical methods for quantification of glycerol in biodiesel samples, and its accuracy was evaluated using a spike-and-recovery assay, where all the biodiesel samples used obtained admissible values according to the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. The effect of trace quantities of ammonia on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on carbon-supported platinum catalysts in perchloric acid solutions is assessed using rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) technique. The study demonstrates that ammonia has detrimental effects on ORR. The most significant effect takes place in the potential region above 0.7 V vs RHE. The effect is explained by the electrochemical oxidation of ammonia, which blocks Pt active sites and increases the formation of H2O2. This leads to losses in the disk currents and increments in the ring currents. The apparent losses in ORR currents may occur in two ways, namely, through the blocking of the active sites for ORR as well as by generating a small anodic current, which is believed to have a lower contribution. In addition, a detrimental effect of sodium cations in the potential range below 0.75 V vs RHE was demonstrated. This effect is most likely due to the co-adsorption of sodium cations and perchlorate anions on the Pt surface. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A multiwall carbon nanotube/silicone rubber (MWCNT/SR) composite electrode has been used for the determination of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in pharmaceutical formulations by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The electro-oxidation process was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, from which it was observed that HCTZ presents an irreversible oxidation peak at 0.82 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE) in the potential range from 0.5 to 1.1 V, in Britton-Robinson buffer pH 7.0 at MWCNT/SR. HCTZ was determined by DPV using a MWCNT/SR 70% (MWCNT, m/m) composite electrode after the optimization of the experimental parameters. The linear range was from 5.0 to 70.0 mu mol L-1, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.6 mu mol L-1. The HCTZ was determined in pharmaceutical formulations using the proposed composite electrode and the results agreed with those from the official high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method within 95% confidence level, according to the t-Student test.

The development of safe, high energy and power electrochemical energy-conversion systems can be a response to the worldwide demand for a clean and low-fuel-consuming transport. This thesis work, starting from a basic studies on the ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes and carbon electrodes and concluding with tests on large-size IL-based supercapacitor prototypes demonstrated that the IL-based asymmetric configuration (AEDLCs) is a powerful strategy to develop safe, high-energy supercapacitors that might compete with lithium-ion batteries in power assist-hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The increase of specific energy in EDLCs was achieved following three routes: i) the use of hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes; ii) the design and preparation of carbon electrode materials of tailored morphology and surface chemistry to feature high capacitance response in IL and iii) the asymmetric double-layer carbon supercapacitor configuration (AEDLC) which consists of assembling the supercapacitor with different carbon loadings at the two electrodes in order to exploit the wide electrochemical stability window (ESW) of IL and to reach high maximum cell voltage (Vmax). Among the various ILs investigated the N-methoxyethyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PYR1(2O1)TFSI) was selected because of its hydrophobicity and high thermal stability up to 350 °C together with good conductivity and wide ESW, exploitable in a wide temperature range, below 0°C. For such exceptional properties PYR1(2O1)TFSI was used for the whole study to develop large size IL-based carbon supercapacitor prototype. This work also highlights that the use of ILs determines different chemical-physical properties at the interface electrode/electrolyte with respect to that formed by conventional electrolytes. Indeed, the absence of solvent in ILs makes the properties of the interface not mediated by the solvent and, thus, the dielectric constant and double-layer thickness strictly depend on the chemistry of the IL ions. The study of carbon electrode materials evidences several factors that have to be taken into account for designing performing carbon electrodes in IL. The heat-treatment in inert atmosphere of the activated carbon AC which gave ACT carbon featuring ca. 100 F/g in IL demonstrated the importance of surface chemistry in the capacitive response of the carbons in hydrophobic ILs. The tailored mesoporosity of the xerogel carbons is a key parameter to achieve high capacitance response. The CO2-treated xerogel carbon X3a featured a high specific capacitance of 120 F/g in PYR14TFSI, however, exhibiting high pore volume, an excess of IL is required to fill the pores with respect to that necessary for the charge-discharge process. Further advances were achieved with electrodes based on the disordered template carbon DTC7 with pore size distribution centred at 2.7 nm which featured a notably high specific capacitance of 140 F/g in PYR14TFSI and a moderate pore volume, V>1.5 nm of 0.70 cm3/g. This thesis work demonstrated that by means of the asymmetric configuration (AEDLC) it was possible to reach high cell voltage up to 3.9 V. Indeed, IL-based AEDLCs with the X3a or ACT carbon electrodes exhibited specific energy and power of ca. 30 Wh/kg and 10 kW/kg, respectively. The DTC7 carbon electrodes, featuring a capacitance response higher of 20%-40% than those of X3a and ACT, respectively, enabled the development of a PYR14TFSI-based AEDLC with specific energy and power of 47 Wh/kg and 13 kW/kg at 60°C with Vmax of 3.9 V. Given the availability of the ACT carbon (obtained from a commercial material), the PYR1(2O1)TFSI-based AEDLCs assembled with ACT carbon electrodes were selected within the EU ILHYPOS project for the development of large-size prototypes. This study demonstrated that PYR1(2O1)TFSI-based AEDLC can operate between -30°C and +60°C and its cycling stability was proved at 60°C up to 27,000 cycles with high Vmax up to 3.8 V. Such AEDLC was further investigated following USABC and DOE FreedomCAR reference protocols for HEV to evaluate its dynamic pulse-power and energy features. It was demonstrated that with Vmax of 3.7 V at T> 30 °C the challenging energy and power targets stated by DOE for power-assist HEVs, and at T> 0 °C the standards for the 12V-TSS and 42V-FSS and TPA 2s-pulse applications are satisfied, if the ratio wmodule/wSC = 2 is accomplished, which, however, is a very demanding condition. Finally, suggestions for further advances in IL-based AEDLC performance were found. Particularly, given that the main contribution to the ESR is the electrode charging resistance, which in turn is affected by the ionic resistance in the pores that is also modulated by pore length, the pore geometry is a key parameter in carbon design not only because it defines the carbon surface but also because it can differentially “amplify” the effect of IL conductivity on the electrode charging-discharging process and, thus, supercapacitor time constant.

The aim of the present thesis, carried out at the Analytical Group of the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry in Bologna, is to develop a new electrochemical method for the determination of the Antioxidant Capacity (AOC). The approach is based on the deposition of a non-conducting polymeric film on the working electrode surface and the following exposition to the radicals OH· produced by H2O2 photolysis. The strongly oxidant action of hydroxyl radicals degrades, causing an increase of the Faradic current, relevant to the redox couple [Ru(NH3)6]2+/3+ monitored by cyclic voltammetry(CV); the presence of an antioxidant compound in solution slows down the radical action, thus protecting the polymeric film and blocking the charge transfer. The parameter adopted for the quantification of the AOC, was the induction time, called also lag phase, which is the time when the degradation of the film starts. Five pure compounds, among most commonly antioxidant, were investigated : Trolox®(an analogue water-soluble of vitamin E), (L)-ascorbic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol and (-)- epicatechin. The AOC of each antioxidant was expressed by TEAC index (Trolox® Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity), calculated from the ratio between the slope of the calibration curve of the target compound and the slope of the calibration curve of Trolox®. The results from the electrochemical method, have been compared with those obtained from some other standardized methods, widely employed. The assays used for the comparison, have been: ORAC, a spectrofluorimetric method based on the decrease of fluorescein emission after the attack of alkylperoxide radicals, ABTS and DPPH that exploit the decoloration of stable nitrogen radicals when they are reduced in presence of an antioxidant compound and, finally, a potentiometric method based on the response of the redox couple [Fe(CN)6]3-/ [Fe(CN)6]4-. From the results obtained from pure compounds, it has been found that ORAC is the methodology showing the best correlation with the developed electrochemical method, maybe since similar radical species are involved. The comparison between the considered assays, was also extended to the analysis of a real sample of fruit juice. In such a case the TEAC value resulting from the electrochemical method is higher than those from standardized assays.

In the early 20th century, Gouy, Chapman, and Stern developed a theory to describe the capacitance and the spatial ion distribution of diluted electrolytes near an electrode. After a century of research, considerable progress has been made in the understanding of the electrolyte/electrode interface. However, its molecular-scale structure and its variation with an applied potential is still under debate. In particular for room-temperature ionic liquids, a new class of solventless electrolytes, the classical theories for the electrical double layer are not applicable. Recently, molecular dynamics simulations and phenomenological theories have attempted to explain the capacitance of the ionic liquid/electrode interface with the molecular-scale structure and dynamics of the ionic liquid near the electrode. rnHowever, experimental evidence is very limited. rnrnIn the presented study, the ion distribution of an ionic liquid near an electrode and its response to applied potentials was examined with sub-molecular resolution. For this purpose, a new sample chamber was constructed, allowing in situ high energy X-ray reflectivity experiments under potential control, as well as impedance spectroscopy measurements. The combination of structural information and electrochmical data provided a comprehensive picture of the electric double layer in ionic liquids. Oscillatory charge density profiles were found, consisting of alternating anion- and cation-enriched layers at both, cathodic and anodic, potentials. This structure was shown to arise from the same ion-ion correlations dominating the liquid bulk structure that were observed as a distinct X-ray diffraction peak. Therefore, existing physically motivated models were refined and verified by comparison with independent measurements. rnrnThe relaxation dynamics of the interfacial structure upon potential variation were studied by time resolved X-ray reflectivity experiments with sub-millisecond resolution. The observed relaxation times during charging/discharging are consistent with the impedance spectroscopy data revealing three processes of vastly different characteristic time-scales. Initially, the ion transport normal to the interface happens on a millisecond-scale. Another 100-millisecond-scale process is associated with molecular reorientation of electrode-adsorbed cations. Further, a minute-scale relaxation was observed, which is tentatively assigned to lateral ordering within the first layer.

In this work, a method for the functionalization of biocompatible, poly(lactic acid)-based nanoparticles with charged moieties or fluorescent labels is presented. Therefore, a miniemulsion solvent evaporation procedure is used in which prepolymerized poly(L-lactic acid) is used together with a previously synthesized copolymer of methacrylic acid or a polymerizable dye, respectively, and an oligo(lactic acid) macromonomer. Alternatively, the copolymerization has been carried out in one step with the miniemulsion solvent evaporation. The increased stability in salty solutions of the carboxyl-modified nanoparticles compared to nanoparticles consisting of poly(lactic acid) only has been shown in light scattering experiments. The properties of the nanoparticles that were prepared with the separately synthesized copolymer were almost identical to those in which the copolymerization and particle fabrication were carried out simultaneously. During the characterization of the fluorescently labeled nanoparticles, the focus was on the stable bonding between the fluorescent dye and the rest of the polymer chain to ensure that none of it is released from the particles, even after longer storage time or during lengthy experiments. In a fluorescence correlation spectroscopy experiment, it could be shown that even after two weeks, no dye has been released into the solvent. Besides biomedical research for which the above described, functionalized nanoparticles were optimized, nanoparticles also play a role in coating technology. One possibility to fabricate coatings is the electrophoretic deposition of particles. In this process, the mobility of nanoparticles near electrode interfaces plays a crucial role. In this thesis, the nanoparticle mobility has been investigated with resonance enhanced dynamic light scattering (REDLS). A new setup has been developed in which the evanescent electromagnetic eld of a surface plasmon that propagates along the gold-sample interface has been used as incident beam for the dynamic light scattering experiment. The gold layer that is necessary for the excitation of the plasmon doubles as an electrode. Due to the penetration depth of the surface plasmon into the sample layer that is limited to ca. 200 nm, insights on the voltage- and frequency dependent mobility of the nanoparticles near the electrode could be gained. Additionally, simultaneous measurements at four different scattering angles can be carried out with this setup, therefore the investigation of samples undergoing changes is feasible. The results were discussed in context with the mechanisms of electrophoretic deposition.
