Conducting polyamline with electrical conductivity of 2.34 x 10(-1) S cm(-1) was obtained using ferrocenesulfonic acid as dopant. After the ferrocenesulfonic acid was oxidized with FeCl3, though the electrical conductivity of the doped polyaniline decreased by 1-2 orders of magnitude, the magnetic susceptibility (chi) increased with the increase of the oxidation degree of ferrocenesulfonic acid. EPR spectra showed not only a signal with a g value of around 2, but also a so-called half-field signal with a g value of about 4 even at room temperature. Coexistence of ferromagnetic intrachain interactions and antiferromagnetic interchain interactions in the materials has been suggested.

Ferrocenesulfonic acid (FSA) was oxidized by iodine (I-2) and then used as dopant for polyaniline emeraldine base. The resulted polyaniline showed an electrical conductivity of 4.50 x 10(-2) S/cm and a ferromagnetic interaction with a positive Weiss constant of 15 K, the magnetic behavior is attributed to the ferromagnetic coupling between ferrocenium cations in the counter-ions along the polyaniline chain.

In this work, both the thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of nanocrystalline La2Mo2O9 were studied. The nanocrystalline powder of La2Mo2O9 was obtained by sol-gel method, and with the help of SHP (superhigh pressure) up to 4.5 x 10(4) atm at 700 degrees C for a short time, and the nanocrystalline powder was densified without obvious particle size growth. The electrical conductivity of nanocrystalline La2Mo2O9 was one order of magnitude lower than that of the microcrystalline sample at the same temperature. Owing to the phase transition, the microcrystalline La2MO2O9 has an abrupt increase of thermal expansion with a peak value of 48 x 10(-6) K-1 at 556 degrees C. For the nanocrystalline material, the peak value increases to 112 x 10(-6) K-1 at 520 degrees C. On the other hand, above 600 degrees C the significant growth of particle size of the nanocrystalline La2Mo2O9 was observed, accompanying by a tremendous increase of thermal expansion with a peak value of 1565 x 10(-6) K-1 at 620 degrees C. The electrical conductivity of La1.6Nd0.4Mo2O9 at 800 degrees C is 0.14 S center dot cm(-1) which is about one third higher than that of La2Mo2O9.

We have fabricated DNA network structures on glass and sapphire substrates. As a comparison, we also formed the network structure on mica substrate. For titanate strontium substrate, however, DNA network can not be obtained even if it is wet-treated by Na2HPO4 solution to make it hydrophilic. We also discuss the factors that affect the DNA networks formed on various substrates.

A novel solid solution Ce6MoO15 was achieved. Their structure and oxide ionic conductivity were studied. Based on Ce6MoO15, rare earth element substitution on cerium site shows that all resulting oxides enhance the conductivity further, and have high oxide-ion conductivity, which may be a kind of promising material for SOFCs.

The layered cobaltite Ca2.6Nd0.4Co4O9 was synthesized by the solid-state reaction. Their crystal structure was determined by the X-ray powder diffraction and CELL program. The prepared Ca2.6Nd0.4Co4O9 compound has the monoclinic symmetry. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured from room temperature to 700 degreesC in air. Both the properties increase while rising temperature. The thermoelectric power of Ca2.6Nd0.4Co4O9 is about 242.4 muV (.) K-1. The results imply a promising way to enhance the thermoelectric properties of the layered cobaltite oxides by optimizing their composition and microstructure.

Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are liquids at room temperature and represent a new class of nonaqueous but polar solvents with high ionic conductivity. The conductivity property of carbon nanotubes/RTILs and carbon microbeads/RTILs composite materials has been studied using ac impedance technology. Enzyme coated by RTILs-modified gold and glassy carbon electrodes allow efficient electron transfer between the electrode and the protein and also catalyze the reduction Of O-2 and H2O2,

In an attempt to raise the transport number of Li+ to nearly unity in solid polymer electrolytes, commercial perfluorinated sulfonate acid membrane Nafion 117 was lithiated and codissolved with copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride)hexafluoropropylene. The effect of fumed silica on the physical and electrochemical properties of the single ion conduction polymer electrolyte was studied with atom force microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was confirmed that the fumed silica has an obvious effect on the morphology of polymer electrolyte membranes and ionic conductivity. The resulting materials exhibit good film formation, solvent-maintaining capability, and dimensional stability. The lithium polymer electrolyte after gelling with a plasticizer shows a high ionic conductivity of 3.18 x 10(-4) S/cm.

By adding a small amount of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to polyethylene oxide (PEO) and a salt system, a new type of nanocomposite film was constructed. At ambient temperature, the conductivity of the PEO-salt-0.5 wt % MWNTs was nearly three orders of magnitude higher than that of the PEO-salt system. The conductive property of the nanocomposite film was characterized by ac impedance and the differential scanning calorimetry technique.

Polymer-clay nanocomposite (PCN) materials were prepared by intercalation of an alkyl-ammonium ion spacing/coupling agent and a polymer between the planar layers of a swellable-layered material, such as montmorillonite (MMT). The nanocomposite lithium polymer electrolytes comprising such PCN materials and/or a dielectric solution (propylene carbonate) were prepared and discussed. The chemical composition of the nanocomposite materials was determined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which revealed that the alkyl-ammonium ion successfully intercalated the layer of MMT clay, and thus copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) entered the galleries of montmorillonite clay. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to investigate the electrochemical properties of the lithium polymer electrolyte. Equivalent circuits were proposed to fit the EIS data successfully, and the significant contribution from MMT was thus identified. The resulting polymer electrolytes show high ionic conductivity up to 10(-3) S cm(-1) after felling with propylene carbonate.

Three fully amorphous comb-branch polymers based on poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) as a backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether of different molecular weights as side chains were synthesized. SiO2 nanoparticles of various contents and the salt LiCF3SO3 were added to these comb-branch polymers to obtain nanocomposite polymer electrolytes. The thermal and transport properties of the samples have been characterized. The maximum conductivity of 2.8x10(-4) S cm(-1) is obtained at 28 degreesC. In the system the longer side chain of the comb-branch polymer electrolyte increases in ionic conductivity after the addition of nanoparticles. To account for the role of the ceramic fillers in the nanocomposite polymer electrolyte, a model based on a fully amorphous comb-branch polymer matrix in enhancing transport properties of Li+ ions is proposed.

A series of eight new polyquinolines and polyanthrazolines with pyrrole isomeric units in main chain were synthesized and characterized. The new polymers showed high glass transition temperatures (T-g = 242-339 degreesC) and excellent thermal stability (T-5% = 398-536 degreesC in air, TGA). Compared to the series of polyanthrazolines, the series of polyquinolines exhibited higher thermal stability, better solubility in common organic solvents, and lower maximum absorption wavelengths (lambda(max)(a)). Polyanthrazolines with 2,5-pyrrole linkage showed an unusually high lambda(max)(a) (565 nm) and small band gap (2.02 eV). All polymers in solution had low photoluminescence quantum yields between 10(-2%) and 10(-5%) and excited-state lifetimes of 0.28-1.29 ns. The effects of molecular structure, especially pyrrole linkage structures, on the electronic structure, thermodynamics, and some of the optical properties of the polymers were explored. A model of hydrogen bonds in the main chain of the polymers was suggested to explain the difference in the properties of the isomer polymers. In addition, a polyquinoline (PBM) was chosen to examine the proton conductivity; the result indicated that the PBM/H3PO4 complex exhibited a high conductivity of 1.5 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 157 degreesC.

A series of new composite proton exchange membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) based on poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), phosphotungstic acid (PWA) and silica were prepared. The highest proton conductivity (a) of these membranes is 0.017 S/cm at ambient temperature. The methanol permeability (D) of these composite membranes ranges from 10(-7) to 10(-8) cm(2)/S. From the ratios of sigma/D, it was found that the optimal weight composition of the PVA/PWA/SiO2 membrane is PVA/PWA/SiO2=0.40:0.40:0.20 wt. Infrared (IR) spectrographic measurements indicate that the Keggin structure characteristics of the PW12O403- anion is present in the composite membranes. Cyclic voltammetry shows that the electrochemical stability window of the complex membrane is from -0.5 to 1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl electrode. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that silica can improve the thermal stability of the complexes and the single Tg of the membrane indicates that the membrane is homogeneous. The complexes behave as X-ray amorphous.
