The first part of this research work regards the assessment of the mathematical modelling of reinforced concrete columns confined with carbon fibre (CFRP) sheets under axial loading. The purpose was to evaluate existing analytical models, contribute to possible improvements and choose the best model(s) to be part of a new model for the prediction of the behaviour of confined columns under bending and compression. For circular columns, a wide group of authors have proposed several models specific for FRP-confined concrete. The analysis of some of the existing models was carried out by comparing these with several tested columns. Although several models predict fairly the peak load only few can properly estimate the load-strain and dilation behaviour of the columns. Square columns confined with CFRP show a more complex interpretation of their behaviour. Accordingly, the analysis of two experimental programs was carried out to propose new modelling equations for the whole behaviour of columns. The modelling results show that the analytical curves are in general agreement with the presented experimental curves for a wide range of dimensions. An analysis similar to the one done for circular columns was this turn carried out for square columns. Few models can fairly estimate the whole behaviour of the columns and with less accuracy at all levels when compared with circular columns. The second part of this study includes seven experimental tests carried out on reinforced concrete rectangular columns with rounded corners, different damage condition and with confinement and longitudinal strengthening systems. It was concluded that the use of CFRP confinement is viable and of effective performance enhancement alone and combined with other techniques, maintaining a good ductile behaviour for established threshold displacements. As regards the use of external longitudinal strengthening combined with CFRP confinement, this system is effective for the performance enhancement and viable in terms of execution. The load capacity was increased significantly, preserving also in this case a good ductile behaviour for threshold displacements. As to the numerical nonlinear modelling of the tested columns, the results show a variation of the peak load of 1% to 10% compared with tests results. The good results are partly due to the inclusion of the concrete constitutive model by Mander et al. modified by Faustino, Chastre & Paula taking into account the confinement effect. Despite the reasonable approximation to tests results, the modelling results showed higher unloading, which leads to an overestimate dissipated energy and residualdisplacement.

Nas últimas décadas, as ciências sociais e humanas têm despertado para a acção modeladora das estruturas sobre a percepção humana. O debate académico sobre o relativismo cultural dos modelos de percepção tem levado investigadores das várias áreas a debruçarem-se sobre o estudo dos sentidos. Correntes disciplinares como a antropologia ou história dos sentidos vêm sintetizando a dimensão estrutural e fenomenológica, a partir da compreensão do carácter biológico e cultural da experiência sensorial. Nesse sentido, tem emergido uma nova história da arte que contraria as últimas décadas de predomínio da linguística e semiótica, em função da compreensão da performance das imagens ligada à percepção sensorial. Questiona-se o totalitarismo que o método iconográfico/iconológico de Panofsky tem encontrado na historiografia da arte, a partir da ideia de que as imagens antes de um significado são uma acção, antes de uma função são um uso.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association of thiamin, selenium, and copper serum levels with cardiac function in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy using diuretics, and also to compare them with levels in control patients with no evidence of disease. METHODS: The study comprised 30 patients with heart disease and 30 healthy control individuals. Thiamin was analyzed by measuring the activity of erythrocytic transketolase and the effect of thiamin pyrophosphate. Selenium and copper serum levels were measured by hydride generation and flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, respectively. RESULTS: Thiamin deficiency was observed in 10% of the control individuals and in 33% of the patients with heart disease (p=0.02). The mean selenium and copper serum levels in control individuals and patients with heart disease were, respectively, 73.2±9.9 µg/L (56.5 to 94.5 µg/L) and 72.3±14.3 µg/L (35.5 to 94 µg/L) (p=0.77); 1.1±0.4mg/L (0.6 to 1.8mg/L) and 1.2± 0.4mg/L (0.6 to 2.2mg/L) (p=0.27). No association between the levels of these nutrients and cardiac function was observed. CONCLUSION: Thiamin deficiency was significantly more frequent in patients with heart disease. No significant difference was observed between the mean selenium and copper serum levels in control individuals and in patients with heart disease. The results suggest possible benefits with thiamin replacement in patients taking diuretics.

OBJECTIVE: To compare blood pressure response to dynamic exercise in hypertensive patients taking trandolapril or captopril. METHODS: We carried out a prospective, randomized, blinded study with 40 patients with primary hypertension and no other associated disease. The patients were divided into 2 groups (n=20), paired by age, sex, race, and body mass index, and underwent 2 symptom-limited exercise tests on a treadmill before and after 30 days of treatment with captopril (75 to 150 mg/day) or trandolapril (2 to 4 mg/day). RESULTS: The groups were similar prior to treatment (p<0.05), and both drugs reduced blood pressure at rest (p<0.001). During treatment, trandolapril caused a greater increase in functional capacity (+31%) than captopril (+17%; p=0.01) did, and provided better blood pressure control during exercise, observed as a reduction in the variation of systolic blood pressure/MET (trandolapril: 10.7±1.9 mmHg/U vs 7.4±1.2 mmHg/U, p=0.02; captopril: 9.1±1.4 mmHg/U vs 11.4±2.5 mmHg/U, p=0.35), a reduction in peak diastolic blood pressure (trandolapril: 116.8±3.1 mmHg vs 108.1±2.5 mmHg, p=0.003; captopril: 118.2±3.1 mmHg vs 115.8±3.3 mmHg, p=0.35), and a reduction in the interruption of the tests due to excessive elevation in blood pressure (trandolapril: 50% vs 15%, p=0.009; captopril: 50% vs 45%, p=0.32). CONCLUSION: Monotherapy with trandolapril is more effective than that with captopril to control blood pressure during exercise in hypertensive patients.

Esta propuesta de investigación se enmarca en los encuentros y discusiones que se están realizando en la Escuela de Artes de la Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades (CEPIA, CIFFyH y SeCyT, de la U.N.C), en relación a las problemáticas de la investigación en Artes. Los encuentros llevados a cabo en diversas ocasiones y a lo largo de 2009, demuestran la necesidad de establecer un campo particular de la investigación y su relación con la práctica artística. Este proyecto nace de estas inquietudes y establece ciertos ejes de trabajo que permiten poner en práctica ciertos esbozos imaginados. En este sentido, nuestra propuesta se centra en definir la misma construcción escénica como objeto de estudio, delimitando sobre éste la problemática de lo real en el trabajo de la ficción, proponiendo además un equipo que permita investigar en su propio desarrollo creativo las diversas variables que entran en juego. De este modo, se trabajará en una propuesta de laboratorio escénico donde los planteos de orden teórico atraviesen la práctica y, a su vez, la observación de ésta permita una reelaboración y profundización del pensamiento contemporáneo sobre la problemática ejecución/representación, desde los diversos órdenes en que ésta interviene. La idea de representación teatral que planteaba Aristóteles señala que las acciones devienen necesariamente en la definición del carácter de los personajes. Este concepto es clave en el desarrollo del teatro occidental y por ende en las diferentes concepciones de actor. La definición de acción dada por Aristóteles es problemática para parte del teatro contemporáneo ya que supone que toda acción es mimética. También da por supuesto que en el teatro se conforman personajes, y que la unidad narrativa está dada por una programática, que es definida por la acción.La presente investigación se propone indagar en la relación entre la ejecución de la acción y su representación en el desarrollo de un laboratorio teatral. Esto implica que necesariamente es aplicada al trabajo escénico. Nuestra hipótesis de partida es que la relación conflictiva entre acción, ejecución de la misma y representación, se produce a partir de la operación material sobre lo real . Estas intersecciones podrían ser pensadas como una teoría del montaje donde la corporalidad es el principio necesario e irreductible de la construcción. La intersección de lo real es una problemática que permite ahondar sobre los procedimientos por los cuales se construye la escena. La idea de un teatro material, obliga a pensar con qué procedimientos se construye ficción. Un teatro que intenta recalar en lo “real” como modo de señalar la cosa misma, se propone, desde la perspectiva de la realización, indagar en los mecanismos de su construcción (procedimientos), por lo cual supone que la actividad teatral puede dar cuenta de los procesos por los cuales se realiza. La realización de una acción, puede remitir a sí misma y genera una relación “extraña” y ambigua con el mundo de referencia. La acción en sí misma, pone en cuestión la idea de modelo y da cuenta de una crisis en la representación. La teoría ha intentado dividir y sistematizar de manera binaria la manifestación teatral: Teatro de Representación/ Teatro Performático, para distinguir un teatro vinculado a la creación de personajes o para relacionarlo a un teatro de ejecución. Sin embargo, pensamos que es posible encontrar en la producción escénica, intersecciones de lo real que median el mundo de la representación y el de la performance para la construcción de ficción. Nuestra hipótesis de base es que si intervenimos el plano de la ejecución en el actor, la representación varía sustancialmente sus mecanismos de producción de sentido. Este primer planteo no es conflictivo hasta que se pone de manifiesto lo real. This research’s proposal is framed into the meetings and discussions that have been taking place in the School of Arts of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities (CEPIA, CIFFyH y SeCyT, of the National University of Cordoba), concerning the difficulties of research in Arts. The meetings carried out along 2009, demonstrate the need to establish a particular field of research and its relation to the practice of arts. This project is born from these concerns and it establishes central axis for the work, that enables us to put on practice some sketches imagined. In this regard, our proposal focuses on defining the construction of the scene as object of study, in itself, delimiting the issue of “the real” in the work of fiction. Proposing, furthermore, a team for researching the many variables that comes into play, in their own creative development. Consequently, the work will be developed in the method of a scenic laboratory, where the theoretical proposals cross over the practice and, in turn, these observations allow a reworking and deepen of contemporary thinking about the problematic of performance / representation, from the diverse orders in which it intervene. The idea of theatrical performance proposed by Aristotle, indicate that actions necessarily turn into the definition of the nature of the characters. This concept is key to the development of Western theaterand consequently on the different conceptions of actor. The definition of action given by Aristotle is problematic for a part of the contemporary theater, because it assumes that every action is mimetic. Also presumes that in the theatre the characters are formed, and narrative unit is given by a programmatic, which is defined by the action. This research proposes to explore the relationship between implementation of the action and its representation in the development of a theatrical laboratory. A natural chromosomal race of Tityus babiensis (Scorpiones Buthidae) is described in the present paper. Five males and seven females received from St. Joaquim, State of S. Paulo, gave the following interesting results: All the spermatogonia of the five males were provided with 9 chromosomes of different sizes. All primary spermatocytes showed at metaphase one independent bivalent of normal shape and a complex group formed by 7 chromosomes which have exchanged parts. Some of the chromosomes associated in the complex group, to Judge by their behavior, were composed of fragments of three different chromosomes, being thus paired with three other members of the compound group. The manner in which all the 7 components of the group have paired with each other showed to be very constant. They gave always origin to a double-cross configuration, the longst branch of which being formed by a long chromosome paired with two components of the group and with a third chromosome that did not belong to the group. The chromosomes of the independent bivalent separate regularly, going to different poles. From the 7 elements of the compound group, 4 go to one pole and 3 to the opposite one. Consequently, secondary spermatocytes with 4 and 5 chromosomes are produced. The females, so far as it can be inferred from the study of the follicular cells of the ovariuterus, have 10 chromosomes. These females are, therefore, considered as being monogametic, that is, as producing eggs with 5 chromosomes. A sex-determining mechanism arose in this manner, the spermatozoa with 5 chromosomes giving origin to females and those with 4 to males. The fact that the sex chromosome is one of the elements taking part in the formation of the group, seems highly interesting to the author. Tetraploid cysts have been occasionally found in the testis. In one individual the chromosomes of the tetraploid primary spermatocytes behaved as expected, forming a group of 14 elements, and two independent pairs or a tetravalent group In another individual, the chromosomes of the tetraploid cells have formed two independent groups of 7, and two independent pairs, as if both chromosomal sets were by their turn entirely independent frcm one another. This fact is certainly not devoid of special interest. The males as well as the females studied in this paper differed in nothing from the typical members of the species. The unique differential character of the new race is found in the umber and behavior of its chromosomes. It is highly remarkable that the occurrences which have transformed the 6 chromosomes normally present in the species into a new set of 9 elements, 7 of which have been profoun- dly altered in their structure, do not show any influence on the morphology of the organism. This fact, together with those found in the salivary-chromosomes races of Drosophila and Sciara. compromises strongly the genetical concept of position effects.
