The selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) was investigated using rice husk-based porous carbon (RHCs) supported platinum catalysts in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2). The effects of surface chemistry treatment of the support and the reaction phase behavior have been examined. The Pt/H-RHCs (HNO3-pretreated) was more active for CAL hydrogenation compared with Pt/NH3 - RHCs (NH3 center dot H2O-pretreated). The Pt/RHCs catalyst exhibited a higher selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) compared with commercial catalyst of Pt/C, which is relative to the micro - mesoporosity structure of the RHCs.

The reaction rates of the hydrogenation of maleic anhydride (MAH) and succinic anhydride (SAH) were significantly accelerated and the selectivity to gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) was enhanced largely when the reaction mixture was pressurized by a non-reactant of CO2. Above 99% selectivity to GBL was achieved in 14 MPa CO2, the superior selectivity in scCO(2) was attributed to that MAH and/or SAH could be extracted to CO2 phase and separated from H2O, the hydrolysis were thus minimized and so the selectivity to GBL was improved.

The selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB) over Ni/gamma-Al2O3 Catalysts Was investigated using different media of dense phase CO2, ethanol, and n-hexane. In dense phase CO2, the total rate of NB hydrogenation was larger than that in organic solvents under similar reaction conditions; the selectivity to the desired product, aniline, was almost 100% over the whole conversion range of 0-100%. The phase behavior of the reactant mixture in/under dense phase CO2 was examined at reaction conditions. In situ high-pressure Fourier transform infrared measurements were made to study the molecular interactions Of CO2 with the following reactant and reaction intermediates: NB, nitrosobenzene (NSB), and N-phenylhydroxylamine (PHA). Dense phase CO2 strongly interacts with NB, NSB, and PHA, modifying the reactivity of each species and contributing to positive effects on the reaction rate and the selectivity to aniline. A possible reaction pathway for the hydrogenation of NB in/under dense phase CO2 over Ni/gamma-Al2O3 is also proposed.

CO2-in-Water (C/W) emulsion was formed by using a nonionic surfactant of poly (ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)-poly (ethylene oxide) (P123), and palladium nanoparticles were synthesized in situ in the present work. The catalytic performance of Pd nanoparticles in the C/W emulsion has been discussed for a selective hydrogenation of citral. Much higher activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 6313 h(-1) has been obtained in this unique C/W emulsion compared to that in the W/C microemulsion (TOF, 23 h(-1)), since the reaction was taking place not only in the surfactant shell but also on the inner surface of the CO2 core in the C/W emulsion. Moreover, citronellal was obtained with a higher selectivity for that it was extracted to a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) phase as formed and thus its further hydrogenation was prohibited. The Pd nanoparticles could be recycled several times and still retain the same selectivity, but it showed a little aggregation leading to a slight decrease in conversion.

In the present work, platinum nanoparticles were prepared by in situ reduction with polyethylene glycols (PEGs). The catalytic performance of Pt nanoparticles immobilized in PEGs (Pt-PEGs) is discussed for the hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB). A high selectivity to o-chloroaniline (o-CAN) of about 99.7% was obtained with the Pt-PEGs catalysts at the complete conversion of o-CNB, which is much higher than that (83.4%) obtained over the conventional catalyst of Pt/C. The Pt nanoparticies could be immobilized in PEGs stably and recycled for four times with the same activity and selectivity. It presents a promising performance in the hydrogenation and its wide application in catalytic reactions is expected.

Hydrogenation of maleic anhydride (MAH) with Pd/C catalysts in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) was investigated. The selectivity for gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) reached 97.3% in scCO(2) at 100% conversion of MAH, which was notably higher than that of 77.4% obtained in organic solvent of ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (EGDME). The particle size of Pd exhibited large influence on the reaction rate and selectivity of GBL. Higher selectivity of GBL was obtained with Pd/C catalyst of smaller Pd particle size, and the rate of GBL selectivity increase as a function of CO2 pressure was found to be significantly correlated with Pd particle size.

The activity and selectivity of the transition metal complexes formed from Ru, Rh, Pd and Ni with triphenylphosphine (TPP) have been investigated for hydrogenation of citral in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)). High activities are obtained with Ru/TPP and Pd/TPP catalysts, and the overall activity is in the order of Pd approximate to Ru > Rh > Ni. The Ru/TPP complex is highly selective to the formation of unsaturated alcohols of geraniol and nerol. In contrast, the Pd/TPP catalyst is more selective to partially saturated aldehydes of citronellal. Furthermore, the influence of several parameters such as CO2 and H-2 pressures, N-2 pressure and reaction time has been discussed. CO2 pressure has a significant impact on the product distribution, and the selectivity for geraniol and nerol can be enhanced from 27% to 75% with increasing CO2 pressure from 6 to 16 MPa, while the selectivity for citronellol decreases from 70% to 20%. Striking changes in the conversion and product distribution in scCO(2) could be interpreted with variations in the phase behavior and the molecular interaction between CO2 and the substrate in the gas phase and in the liquid phase.

The ring hydrogenation of benzoic acid to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid over charcoal-supported transition metal catalysts in supercritical CO2 medium has been studied in the present work. The cyclohexanecarboxylic acid can be produced efficiently in supercritical CO2 at the low reaction temperature of 323 K. The presence of CO2 increases the reaction rate and several parameters have been discussed.

An efficient enantioselective catalyst of 5 wt.% Ru/-gamma-Al2O3 modified with R,R-1,2-diphenylethylene-diamine ((R,R)-DPEN) for the hydrogenation of a non-activated aromatic ketone of acetophenone has been investigated, a relatively high enantiomeric excess (ee) of 60.5% was obtained at both the conversion and selectivity larger than 99%, it was about three times higher than the ee values reported up to now for acetophenone hydrogenation with the supported transition metal catalysts modified by chiral reagents. The influences of some reaction parameters such as phosphine ligand, substrate/catalyst/modifier molar ratios, base, solvent, pressure and reaction temperature have been discussed. The chiral modifier of (R,R)-DPEN was very important in controlling the enantioselectivity through adsorption competing with other substrates on the surface of active metal species. The phosphine ligand and base were also important and indispensable in the present reaction.

The purpose of the present work is to investigate the compositional difference of polypropylene-polyethylene block copolymers (PP-b-PE) manufactured industrially by the process of degradation and hydrogenation, respectively. Each of the PP-b-PE copolymers was fractionated into three fractions with heptane and chloroform. The compositions of the three fractions were characterized by C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal fractionation. The results showed that the Chloroform-soluble fraction was amorphous ethylene-propylene rubber, and the content of the rubber in PP-b-PE manufactured by hydrogenation was less than that by degradation. The degree of crystallinity of the chloroform-insoluble fraction of the PP-b-PE manufactured by hydrogenation is higher than that of by degradation.

Three kinds of polymer resin supported Pd catalysts were prepared by mixing PdCl2, with alkaline styrene anion exchange resins[D392 -NH2, D382, -NHCH3, D301R, -NH(CH3)(2)], strongly alkaline styrene anion exchanged resin [201 X 7DVB, -NH+ (CH3)(3)] and alkaline epoxy exchange resin (701, -NH2), and hydrogenating in liquid phase at 1.013 X 10(5) Pa. The hydrogenation of furfural was studied under the reaction conditions such as solvent, temperature. Pd content in the supported catalyst and the amount of the catalyst. The yield of hydrogenation reaction of furfural markedly increased to 100% and the selectivity to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol increased to over 98% by polymer (alkaline styrene anion exchange resins D392, -NH2, D382, -NHCH3) supported palladium catalysts comparing with the yield over 70% and selectivity over 97% by palladium catalyst, in 50% alcohol-50% water or pure water solution at 1.013 X 10(5) Pa. The relationship between hydrogenation and the structures of functional group in the supporting resin was examined by XPS method.
