The endodermis is a highly conserved cell layer present in the root of all vascular plants, except Lycophytes. This tissue layer establishes a protective diffusion barrier surrounding the vasculature and is expected to prevent passive, uncontrolled flow of nutrients through the root. This barrier property is achieved by the production of Casparian strips (CS), a localized cell wall impregnation of lignin in the anticlinal walls of each endodermal cell, forming a belt-like structure sealing the extracellular space. The CS act as a selective barrier between the external cell layers and the vascular cylinder and are thought to be important in many aspects of root function. For instance, selective nutrient uptake and sequestration from the soil, resistance to different abiotic and biotic stresses are expected to involve functional CS. Although discovered 150 years ago, nothing was known about the genes involved in CS establishment until recently. The use of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana together with both reverse and forward genetic approaches led to the discovery of an increasing number of genes involved in different steps of CS formation during the last few years. One of these genes encodes SCHENGEN3 (SGN3), a leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK). SGN3 was discovered first by reverse genetic due to its endodermis-enriched expression, and the corresponding mutant displays strong endodermal permeability of the apoplastic tracer Propidium Iodide (PI) indicative of defective CS. One aim of this thesis is to study the role of SGN3 at the molecular level in order to understand its involvement in establishing an impermeable CS. The endodermal permeability of sgn3 is shown to be the result of incorrect localization of key proteins involved in CS establishment (the "Casparian strip domain proteins", CASPs), leading to non-functional CS interrupted by discontinuities. CASPs localize in the plasma membrane domain subjacent to the CS, named the Casparian Strip membrane Domain (CSD). The CSD discontinuities in sgn3 together with SGN3 localization in close proximity to the CASPs lead to the assumption that SGN3 is involved in the formation of a continuous CSD. In addition, SGN3 might have a second role, acting as a kinase reporting CSD integrity leading to lignin and suberin production in CSD/CS defective plants. Up to now, sgn3 is the strongest and most specific CS mutant available, displaying tracer penetration along the whole length of the seedling root. For this reason, this mutant is well suited in order to characterize the physiological behaviour of CS affected plants. Due to the lack of such mutants in the past, it was not possible to test the presumed functions of CS by using plants lacking this structure. We decided to use sgn3 for this purpose. Surprisingly, sgn3 overall growth is only slightly affected. Nevertheless, processes expected to rely on functional CS, such as water transport through the root, nutrient homeostasis, salt tolerance and resistance to an excess of some nutrients are altered in this mutant. On the other hand, homeostasis for most elements and drought tolerance are not affected in sgn3. It is surprising to observe that homeostatic defects are specific, with a decrease in potassium and an increase in magnesium levels. It indicates a backup system, set up by the plant in order to counteract free diffusion of nutrients into the stele. For instance, potassium shortage in sgn3 upregulates the transcription of potassium influx transport proteins and genes known to be induced by potassium starvation. Moreover, sgn3 mutant is hypersensitive to low potassium conditions. Hopefully, these results about SGN3 will help our understanding of CS establishment at the molecular level. In addition, physiological experiments using sgn3 should give us a framework for future experiments and help us to understand the different roles of CS and their involvement during nutrient radial transport through the root. -- L'endoderme est un tissu présent dans les racines de toutes les plantes vasculaires à l'exception des Lycophytes. Ce tissu établit une barrière protectrice entourant les tissus vasculaires dans le but d'éviter la diffusion passive et incontrôlée des nutriments au travers de la racine. Cette propriété de barrière provient de la production des cadres de Caspary, une imprégnation localisée de lignine des parties anticlinales de la paroi de chaque cellule d'endoderme. Cela donne naissance à un anneau/cadre qui rend étanche l'espace extracellulaire. Les cadres de Caspary agissent comme une barrière sélective entre les couches externes de la racine et le cylindre central et sont supposés être importants dans beaucoup d'aspects du fonctionnement de la racine. Durant ces dernière années, l'utilisation de la plante modèle Arabidopsis thaliana ainsi que des approches de génétique inverse et classique ont permis la découverte d'un nombre croissant de gènes impliqués à différentes étapes de la formation de cette structure. Un des ces gènes code pour SCHENGEN3 (SGN3), un récepteur kinase "leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase" (LRR-RLK). SGN3 a été découvert en premier par génétique inverse grâce à son expression enrichie dans l'endoderme. Les cadres de Caspary ne sont pas fonctionnels dans le mutant correspondant, ce qui est visible à cause de la perméabilité de l'endoderme au traceur apoplastique Propidium Iodide (PI). Un des objectifs de cette thèse est d'étudier la fonction de SGN3 au niveau moléculaire dans le but de comprendre son rôle dans la formation des cadres de Caspary. J'ai pu démontrer que la perméabilité de l'endoderme du mutant sgn3 est le résultat de la localisation incorrecte de protéines impliquées dans la formation des cadres de Caspary, les "Casparian strip domain proteins" (CASPs). Cela induit des cadres de Caspary non fonctionnels, contenant de nombreuses interruptions. Les CASPs sont localisés à la membrane plasmique dans un domaine sous-jacent les cadres de Caspary appelé Casparian Strip membrane Domain (CSD). Les interruptions du CSD dans le mutant sgn3, ainsi que la localisation de SGN3 à proximité des CASPs nous font penser à un rôle de SGN3 dans l'élaboration d'un CSD ininterrompu. De plus, SGN3 pourrait avoir un second rôle, agissant en tant que kinase reportant l'intégrité du CSD et induisant la production de lignine et de subérine dans des plantes contenant des cadres de Caspary non fonctionnels. Jusqu'à ce jour, sgn3 est le mutant en notre possession le plus fort et le plus spécifique, ayant un endoderme perméable tout le long de la racine. Pour cette raison, ce mutant est adéquat dans le but de caractériser la physiologie de plantes ayant des cadres de Caspary affectés. De manière surprenante, la croissance de sgn3 est seulement peu affectée. Néanmoins, des processus censés nécessiter des cadres de Caspary fonctionnels, comme le transport de l'eau au travers de la racine, l'homéostasie des nutriments, la tolérance au sel et la résistance à l'excès de certains nutriments sont altérés dans ce mutant. Malgré tout, l'homéostasie de la plupart des nutriments ainsi que la résistance au stress hydrique ne sont pas affectés dans sgn3. De manière surprenante, les altérations de l'ionome de sgn3 sont spécifiques, avec une diminution de potassium et un excès de magnésium. Cela implique un système de compensation établi par la plante dans le but d'éviter la diffusion passive des nutriments en direction du cylindre central. Par exemple, le manque de potassium dans sgn3 augmente la transcription de transporteurs permettant l'absorption de cet élément. De plus, des gènes connus pour être induits en cas de carence en potassium sont surexprimés dans sgn3 et la croissance de ce mutant est sévèrement affectée dans un substrat pauvre en potassium. Ces résultats concernant SGN3 vont, espérons-le, aider à la compréhension du processus de formation des cadres de Caspary au niveau moléculaire. De plus, les expériences de physiologie utilisant sgn3 présentées dans cette thèse devraient nous donner une base pour des expériences futures et nous permettre de comprendre mieux le rôle des cadres de Caspary, et plus particulièrement leur implication dans le transport radial des nutriments au travers de la racine. -- Les plantes terrestres sont des organismes puisant l'eau et les nutriments dont elles ont besoin pour leur croissance dans le sol grâce à leurs racines. De par leur immobilité, elles doivent s'adapter à des sols contenant des quantités variables de nutriments et il leur est crucial de sélectionner ce dont elles ont besoin afin de ne pas s'intoxiquer. Cette sélection est faite grâce à un filtre formé d'un tissu racinaire interne appelé endoderme. L'endoderme fabrique une barrière imperméable entourant chaque cellule appelée "cadre de Caspary". Ces cadres de Caspary empêchent le libre passage des nutriments, permettant un contrôle précis de leur passage. De plus, ils sont censés permettre de résister contre différents stress environnementaux comme la sécheresse, la salinité du sol ou l'excès de nutriments. Bien que découverts il y a 150 ans, rien n'était connu concernant les gènes impliqués dans la formation des cadres de Caspary jusqu'à récemment. Durant ces dernière années, l'utilisation de la plante modèle Arabidopsis thaliana a permis la découverte d'un nombre croissant de gènes impliqués à différentes étapes de la formation de cette structure. Cela a permis de découvrir que le transport de l'eau au travers de la racine était affecté dans le mutant sgn3. De plus, l'accumulation de certains éléments dans les feuilles de ce mutant est altérée. Nous avons également pu montrer une sensibilité de ce mutant à un excès de sel ou de certains nutriments comme le fer et le manganèse.

This artcle describes work done with enterprise architecture of the National Digital Library. The National Digital Library is an initiative of the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. Its purpose is to promote the availability of the digital information resources of archives, libraries and museums, and to develope the long-term preservation of digital cultural heritage materials. Enterprise architectures are a tool for strategic management and planning. An enterprise architecture also functions as an aid at a more practical level. It shows, for example, what kind of changes and improvements may be made in one system without overlap or conflict with other systems.

Diplomityössä tarkastellaan laadun ja tuottavuuden parantamisen keinoja hitsaavassa verkostossa MIG/MAG-hitsauksen osalta. Työn taustalla vaikuttaa Total Welding Management -menetelmä, mikä on hitsaustoimintojen kokonaisvaltaiseen johtamiseen ja hallintaan kehitetty toimintamalli. Työn teoriaosassa käsitellään laatuajattelua ja yritysyhteistyötä hitsaavan teollisuuden yrityskentässä sekä hitsauskustannuksiin vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tutkimusosuus sisältää yritysverkoston nykytilan tarkastelun sekä kehitystoimenpiteitä kohti verkoston yhteistä toimintamallia saavuttaa tehokas ja kannattava yhteistyö. Hitsaustyön kustannukset määritetään suurelta osin suunnittelussa. Laatuun voidaan vaikuttaa merkittävästi hitsaustyötä edeltävissä toiminnoissa sekä hitsaajan työn tukemisella. Kokonaisvaltaisen hyödyn saavuttaminen hitsaustyön tuottavuuden parantamisessa vaatii kaikkien toimintojen tarkastelua sen sijaan, että tehostetaan vain hitsaamon toimintaa. Itse hitsaus voi olla vain pieni osa hitsaustoimintojen kokonaishallintaa. Toimintamallin luominen laadunvarmistukseen, suunnittelun ja valmistuksen yhteistyöhön sekä hitsaustoimintojen hallintaan mahdollistaa hitsaavan verkoston toiminnan tehostamisen sekä laadun paranemisen. Tämä saavutetaan viemällä toimintamalli osaksi jokapäiväistä työtä, lähelle valmistusta, ja ohjeistamalla, että jokainen tietää kuinka toimia. Esimerkiksi työssä tarkastellun yhden tuotteen osalta ohjeistus turhan työn vähentämiseksi tuotti 19 % tuotannon kasvun työvuoron aikana. Tilaus-toimitusketjun tuottavuuteen ja kannattavuuteen voidaan vaikuttaa merkittävästi käymällä läpi konkreettisesti valmistettavat tuotteet ja niihin liittyvät toiminnot. Diplomityössä tehtyjen tarkastelujen ja havaintojen avulla käytännön työ tulee jatkumaan yritysverkostossa tapahtuvassa kehitystyössä.

Whereas external social media has been studied, hyped and integrated into companies´ strategies, an insignificant concentration has been put on internal social solutions, which companies provide increasingly to their personnel. An enterprise focusing solely on the benefits of external social media might end up underestimating the true potential embedded in social business. The purpose of this thesis was to examine how social collaboration can be depicted as a structuration process in an Enterprise 2.0 environment. Furthermore, this thesis sought to reveal the benefits, challenges and possibilities of social business. This thesis focused on researching Enterprise 2.0 at the workplace. The studied Enterprise 2.0 solution was IBM Connections. The qualitative research methodology was an extensive case study. Three companies took part into this thesis and all in all 12 employees were interviewed. Additionally, seven IBM Social Business Experts were interviewed in order to receive a better understanding of the phenomenon. Three research questions were designed to fulfill the purpose of this thesis. The research questions were: 1. How are the dimensions of social capital structured through collaboration? 2. How does agency form in Enterprise 2.0? 3. How does social collaboration emerge as a result of the interplay between agency and dimensions of social capital in an Enterprise 2.0 environment and creates outcomes such as trust, identification and knowledge? The main research findings indicate that social collaboration increases trust, identification and knowledge by giving employees more capabilities to do their work. Consequently, social collaboration increases company performance by making individuals and groups more effective. The support of top management is crucial in making Enterprise 2.0 successful, because it is more a cultural than a technological change. Power agency, the lack of top management support and old established work ways such as email and databases work as barriers to social collaboration.

Implementing an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system often means a major change to an organization and involves significant risks. It is typical that many of the ERP system implementations fail resulting in tremendous damage to the business. Moreover, running normal business operations during an ERP system implementation is far more complicated than normally. This thesis focuses on how an organization should manage the ERP system implementation process in order to maintain supply performance during the implementation phase. The theoretical framework in this thesis focuses on ERP system implementations with a critical success factor approach. Critical success factors can be divided into strategic and tactical level success factors. By considering these critical success factors, ERP system implementation project’s timeline and best practices of an ERP implementation, a critical success factor based ERP system implementation management framework is presented. The framework can be used as a theoretical framework when the goal is to avoid ERP system implementation phase issues that are driven by the ERP system implementation project and that may decrease organization’s supply performance. This thesis is a case study that was written on an assignment to a confectionary company Cloetta Suomi Oy. In order to collect data, interviews of the case company personnel were conducted. In addition, several other data collection methods were used throughout the research process. These data collection methods include examination of presentations and archival records as well as direct observations in case company meetings and in various work duties. The results of this thesis indicate that there are several factors that may decrease organization’s supply performance during the ERP system implementation. These issues are categorized under external and internal issues and further into six risk drivers that are suppliers, customers, products, staff, information systems and other projects. After the description and categorization of each issue, the thesis focuses on finding solutions on how to avoid or mitigate the impact of these issues on the organization’s supply performance. This examination leads to several operational activities that are also practical to business practitioners. It is also stated that a successful ERP system implementation that also causes minimal disturbance to organization’s supply performance during the ERP system implementation, is achieved by considering three levels of actions.

Social enterprises apply the best of business for the pursuit of social or environmental mission while also generating revenues. Globally, nearly 1,3 billion people lack access to electricity, as well as another billion having access to only low quality and infrequent electricity. Off-grid renewable energy, like solar, will increasingly have a key role in the solution of the energy access issue. The pioneer gap in off-grid renewable energy consists of financing (or funding) gaps and capacity gaps, to do with both the early stage of the enterprises in question, as well as the early stage of the whole industry. The gaps are emphasised by specific characteristics of off-grid renewable energy business models and the requirements of operating in bottom-of-the-pyramid markets. The marketing perspective to fundraising is chosen to uncover the possible role enterprises themselves have in bridging the pioneer gap. The purpose of this thesis is to study how social enterprises operating in off-grid renewable energy in Africa utilise marketing activities in their investor relations in bridging the pioneer gap. This main research question is divided into the following sub-questions: How does the pioneer gap affect fundraising for these enterprises? How are the funding needs for these enterprises characterised? How do these enterprises build trust in their investor relations? The theoretic framework is built on relationship marketing and investor relations, with an emphasis on creation of trust. The research is conducted as a thematical case study. Primary data is gathered via semi-structured interviews with six solar energy companies and two accelerators. According to the findings, the main components affecting trust-creation are diminished information asymmetry and perceived risk, mission alignment as well as a personal fit or relationship with the investor. Therefore, an enterprise can utilise e.g. the following marketing activities in their investor relations to bridge the pioneer gap: ensuring investor material, the enterprise story and presenting of them is clear, concise and complete to “package” the enterprise as an investment; taking investor needs and motivations into account as well as utilising existing investors as ambassadors.

Several companies are trying to improve their operation efficiency by implementing an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that makes it possible to control the resources of the company in real time. However, the success of the implementation project is not a foregone conclusion; a significant part of these projects end in a failure, one way or another. Therefore it is important to investigate ERP system implementation more closely in order to increase understanding about factors influencing ERP system success and to improve the probability of a successful ERP implementation project. Consequently, this study was initiated because a manufacturing case company wanted to review the success of their ERP implementation project. To be exact, the case company hoped to gain both information about the success of the project and insight for future implementation improvement. This study investigated ERP success specifically by examining factors that influence ERP key-user satisfaction. User satisfaction is one of the most commonly applied indicators of information system success. The research data was mainly collected by conducting theme interviews. The subjects of the interviews were six key-users of the newly implemented ERP system. The interviewees were closely involved in the implementation project. Furthermore, they act as representative users that utilize the new system in everyday business processes. The collected data was analyzed by thematizing. Both data collection and analysis were guided by a theoretical frame of reference. This frame was based on previous research on the subject. The results of the study aligned with the theoretical framework to large extent. The four principal factors influencing key-user satisfaction were change management, contractor service, key-user’s system knowledge and characteristics of the ERP product itself. One of the most significant contributions of the research is that it confirmed the existence of a connection between change management and ERP key-user satisfaction. Furthermore, it discovered two new sub-factors influencing contractor service related key-user satisfaction. In addition, the research findings indicated that in order to improve the current level of key-user satisfaction, the case company should pay special attention to system functionality improvement and enhancement of the key-users’ knowledge. During similar implementation projects in the future, it would be important to assure the success of change management and contractor service related processes.

An Entrepreneurship Centre was established at Brock University in 1988 as a joint venture between the University and the City of St. Catharines. In Januaray 1989, a generous donation was made to the Centre by the Burgoyne family, proprietors of the St. Catharines Standard. The Centre subsequently became known as the Burgoyne Centre for Entrepreneurship (BCE). The Centre’s mission was to “promote excellence in research, education and training for entrepreneur development and new venture creation”. To achieve this objective, it was necessary for the BCE to become a community focal point and serve as a link between academic, private and government sectors in the Niagara Region that were involved in entrepreneurial activities. This was primarily done with the provision of educational programs offered through cooperating organizations. Funding for the Centre came from multiple sources, including fees for services and contract research, endowments and grants, as well as Brock University. An Advisory Council, composed of local prominent businesspeople and chaired by Henry Burgoyne, assisted the Centre with promotion and fundraising. The partnerships established by the BCE with other community bodies such as the Lincoln County Board of Education and the Niagara Region Development Corporation resulted in important collaborative community initiatives such as the Niagara Enterprise Agency and the New Enterprise Store. Such collaborations increased the Centre’s profile without duplicating or competing with services offered by existing agencies. The BCE was also instrumental in establishing an entrepreneurship curriculum for secondary school students, and collaborated with the Faculty of Education at Brock University to offer an Ontario Secondary School Entrepreneurship Specialist Teaching Certificate Program to teachers. As the BCE became more prolific in the community, and the iniatives it fostered in the community began to thrive, the Centre’s leadership required the authority to make instantaneous decisions. This was at odds with the hierarchical structure of the University, to which the BCE was accountable. Ultimately, this situation led to the demise of the Centre. The university focused its efforts on academic research and undergraduate courses, while the community partners took responsibility for any joint programs.

Enterprise Modeling (EM) is currently in operation either as a technique to represent and understand the structure and behavior of the enterprise, or as a technique to analyze business processes, and in many cases as support technique for business process reengineering. However, EM architectures and methods for Enterprise Engineering can also used to support new management techniques like SIX SIGMA, because these new techniques need a clear, transparent and integrated definition and description of the business activities of the enterprise to be able to build up, optimize and operate an successful enterprise. The main goal of SIX SIGMA is to optimize the performance of processes. A still open question is: "What are the adequate Quality criteria and methods to ensure such performance? What must we do to get Quality governance?" This paper describes a method including an Enterprise Engineering method and SIX SIGMA strategy to reach Quality Governance

This paper introduces a framework that supports users to implement enterprise modelling within collaborative companies. These enterprise models are the basis for a holistic interoperability measurement and management methodology which will be presented in the second part of the paper. The discipline of enterprise modelling aims at capturing all dimensions of an enterprise in a simplified model. Thus enterprise models are the appropriate basis for managing collaborative enterprise as they reduce the complexity of interoperability problems. Therefore, a first objective of this paper is to present an approach that enables companies to get the most effect out of enterprise modelling in a collaborative environment based on the maturity of their organisation relative to modelling. Within this first step, the user will get recommendations e.g. for the correct modelling language as well as the right level of detail.

Lean is common sense and good business sense. As organizations grow and become more successful, they begin to lose insight into the basic truths of what made them successful. Organizations have to deal with more and more issues that may not have anything to do with directly providing products or services to their customers. Lean is a holistic management approach that brings the focus of the organization back to providing value to the customer. In August 2002, Mrs. Darleen Druyun, the Principal Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition and government co-chairperson of the Lean Aerospace Initiative (LAI), decided it was time for Air Force acquisitions to embrace the concepts of lean. At her request, the LAI Executive Board developed a concept and methodology to employ lean into the Air Force’s acquisition culture and processes. This was the birth of the “Lean Now” initiative. An enterprise-wide approach was used, involving Air Force System Program Offices (SPOs), aerospace industry, and several Department of Defense agencies. The aim of Lean Now was to focus on the process interfaces between these “enterprise” stakeholders to eliminate barriers that impede progress. Any best practices developed would be institutionalized throughout the Air Force and the Department of Defense (DoD). The industry members of LAI agreed to help accelerate the government-industry transformation by donating lean Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to mentor, train, and facilitate the lean events of each enterprise. Currently, the industry SMEs and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working together to help the Air Force develop its own lean infrastructure of training courses and Air Force lean SMEs. The first Lean Now programs were the F/A-22, Global Hawk, and F-16. Each program focused on specific acquisition processes. The F/A-22 focused on the Test and Evaluation process; the Global Hawk focused on Evolutionary Acquisitions; and the F-16 focused on improving the Contract Closeout process. Through lean, each enterprise made many significant improvements. The F/A-22 was able to reduce its Operational Flight Plan (OFP) Preparation and Load process time of 2 to 3 months down to 7 hours. The Global Hawk developed a new production plan that increases the annual production of its Integrated Sensor Suite from 3 per year to 6 per year. The F-16 enterprise generated and is working 12 initiatives that could result in a contract closeout cycle time reduction of 3 to 7 years. Each enterprise continues to generate more lean initiatives that focus on other areas and processes within their respective enterprises.

En nuestro país el sector de ambientadores y cosméticos ha presentado un crecimiento económico constante y notable, proyectando a Colombia para el año 2032 como un dirigente en la elaboración de cosméticos y productos de aseo. La biodiversidad colombiana ofrece múltiples recursos, incluyendo una gran diversidad de aromas naturales, es un importante mercado para producción de cosméticos sin la utilización de productos artificiales. El presente trabajo de investigación tiene por objetivo determinar las características del diseño de una relación estratégica comunitaria y marketing en la creación de una empresa de cosméticos y ambientadores. Ésta investigación se realiza bajo la recopilación de información del sector y principalmente de la organización, dentro de un estudio empírico-analítico descriptivo. Estableciendo resultados que finalmente dan respuesta a la utilidad de estrategias comunitarias en la actualidad. En el caso de estudio de la nueva empresa "Jolie Le Petit" en un sector en crecimiento, ofrece múltiples oportunidades de negocio y permite generar ideas innovadoras para la venta de productos. La facilidad de cambio y la inclusión en la comunidad posibilita el acercamiento a los clientes, asegurando la permanencia en el mercado indicado. Considerando la posibilidad que la inversión extranjera en el sector pueda afectar notablemente el mercado nacional. Mediante el análisis concluimos que la estrategia de mercadeo comunitaria es adecuada y aplicable a este tipo de empresa. "Jolie Le Petit" además de ser una unidad es también un actor social, estando inmersa en una comunidad en donde juega un papel vital el ser percibida como un buen vecino, ofreciendo a los clientes confianza compromiso y relación continua.

This paper reviews the concept of “organic”, its meaning and emphasizes a comparison with conventional goods. It develops the background of organic goods in the past 20 years, quotations different definitions of organic and developing a main definition. Also it states certain criteriab and variables in order to develop a deeper business analysis. And it has the objective to define the advantages, disadvantages, key points and strategies for companies that want to venture an organic production, and if it’s recommendable to pursue. After a cross case and SWOT analysis it is possible to determine that depending of the core strategy and type of company if an enterprise can decide to venture the organic market.

An enterprise is viewed as a complex system which can be engineered to accomplish organisational objectives. Systems analysis and modelling will enable to the planning and development of the enterprise and IT systems. Many IT systems design methods focus on functional and non-functional requirements of the IT systems. Most methods are normally capable of one but leave out other aspects. Analysing and modelling of both business and IT systems may often have to call on techniques from various suites of methods which may be placed on different philosophic and methodological underpinnings. Coherence and consistency between the analyses are hard to ensure. This paper introduces the Problem Articulation Method (PAM) which facilitates the design of an enterprise system infrastructure on which an IT system is built. Outcomes of this analysis represent requirements which can be further used for planning and designing a technical system. As a case study, a finance system, Agresso, for e-procurement has been used in this paper to illustrate the applicability of PAM in modelling complex systems.

This paper introduces a pragmatic and practical method for requirements modeling. The method is built using the concepts of our goal sketching technique together with techniques from an enterprise architecture modeling language. Our claim is that our method will help project managers who want to establish early control of their projects and will also give managers confidence in the scope of their project. In particular we propose the inclusion of assumptions as first class entities in the ArchiMate enterprise architecture modeling language and an extension of the ArchiMate Motivation Model principle to allow radical as well as normative analyses. We demonstrate the usefulness of this method using a simple university library system as an example.
