Web 2.0 software in general and wikis in particular have been receiving growing attention as they constitute new and powerful tools, capable of supporting information sharing, creation of knowledge and a wide range of collaborative processes and learning activities. This paper introduces briefly some of the new opportunities made possible by Web 2.0 or the social Internet, focusing on those offered by the use of wikis as learning spaces. A wiki allows documents to be created, edited and shared on a group basis; it has a very easy and efficient markup language, using a simple Web browser. One of the most important characteristics of wiki technology is the ease with which pages are created and edited. The facility for wiki content to be edited by its users means that its pages and structure form a dynamic entity, in permanent evolution, where users can insert new ideas, supplement previously existing information and correct errors and typos in a document at any time, up to the agreed final version. This paper explores wikis as a collaborative learning and knowledge-building space and its potential for supporting Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoPs). In the academic years (2007/8 and 2008/9), students of the Business Intelligence module at the Master's programme of studies on Knowledge Management and Business Intelligence at Instituto Superior de Estatistica e Gestao de Informacao of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, have been actively involved in the creation of BIWiki - a wiki for Business Intelligence in the Portuguese language. Based on usage patterns and feedback from students participating in this experience, some conclusions are drawn regarding the potential of this technology to support the emergence of VCoPs; some provisional suggestions will be made regarding the use of wikis to support information sharing, knowledge creation and transfer and collaborative learning in Higher Education.

A Internet das Coisas tal como o Big Data e a análise dos dados são dos temas mais discutidos ao querermos observar ou prever as tendências do mercado para as próximas décadas, como o volume económico, financeiro e social, pelo que será relevante perceber a importância destes temas na atualidade. Nesta dissertação será descrita a origem da Internet das Coisas, a sua definição (por vezes confundida com o termo Machine to Machine, redes interligadas de máquinas controladas e monitorizadas remotamente e que possibilitam a troca de dados (Bahga e Madisetti 2014)), o seu ecossistema que envolve a tecnologia, software, dispositivos, aplicações, a infra-estrutura envolvente, e ainda os aspetos relacionados com a segurança, privacidade e modelos de negócios da Internet das Coisas. Pretende-se igualmente explicar cada um dos “Vs” associados ao Big Data: Velocidade, Volume, Variedade e Veracidade, a importância da Business Inteligence e do Data Mining, destacando-se algumas técnicas utilizadas de modo a transformar o volume dos dados em conhecimento para as empresas. Um dos objetivos deste trabalho é a análise das áreas de IoT, modelos de negócio e as implicações do Big Data e da análise de dados como elementos chave para a dinamização do negócio de uma empresa nesta área. O mercado da Internet of Things tem vindo a ganhar dimensão, fruto da Internet e da tecnologia. Devido à importância destes dois recursos e á falta de estudos em Portugal neste campo, com esta dissertação, sustentada na metodologia do “Estudo do Caso”, pretende-se dar a conhecer a experiência portuguesa no mercado da Internet das Coisas. Visa-se assim perceber quais os mecanismos utilizados para trabalhar os dados, a metodologia, sua importância, que consequências trazem para o modelo de negócio e quais as decisões tomadas com base nesses mesmos dados. Este estudo tem ainda como objetivo incentivar empresas portuguesas que estejam neste mercado ou que nele pretendam aceder, a adoptarem estratégias, mecanismos e ferramentas concretas no que diz respeito ao Big Data e análise dos dados.

Engineering of negotiation model allows to develop effective heuristic for business intelligence. Digital ecosystems demand open negotiation models. To define in advance effective heuristics is not compliant with the requirement of openness. The new challenge is to develop business intelligence in advance exploiting an adaptive approach. The idea is to learn business strategy once new negotiation model rise in the e-market arena. In this paper we present how recommendation technology may be deployed in an open negotiation environment where the interaction protocol models are not known in advance. The solution we propose is delivered as part of the ONE Platform, open source software that implements a fully distributed open environment for business negotiation

Secondary accident statistics can be useful for studying the impact of traffic incident management strategies. An easy-to-implement methodology is presented for classifying secondary accidents using data fusion of a police accident database with intranet incident reports. A current method for classifying secondary accidents uses a static threshold that represents the spatial and temporal region of influence of the primary accident, such as two miles and one hour. An accident is considered secondary if it occurs upstream from the primary accident and is within the duration and queue of the primary accident. However, using the static threshold may result in both false positives and negatives because accident queues are constantly varying. The methodology presented in this report seeks to improve upon this existing method by making the threshold dynamic. An incident progression curve is used to mark the end of the queue throughout the entire incident. Four steps in the development of incident progression curves are described. Step one is the processing of intranet incident reports. Step two is the filling in of incomplete incident reports. Step three is the nonlinear regression of incident progression curves. Step four is the merging of individual incident progression curves into one master curve. To illustrate this methodology, 5,514 accidents from Missouri freeways were analyzed. The results show that secondary accidents identified by dynamic versus static thresholds can differ by more than 30%.

A memória realizada no âmbito do regulamento dos Cursos de Graduação da Universidade Jean Piaget de Cabo Verde, apresenta um estudo exaustivo sobre Sistemas de Apoio à Decisão e Businees Intelligence, mais concretamente, o estudo da sua arquitectura, os benefícios que trazem a uma organização, bem como a sua integração às estratégias empresariais, com vista ao alcance dos objectivos traçados. Ainda, apresenta um estudo de caso sobre a Unipiaget, cujas conclusões indicam que essa Universidade, ainda tem muito o que fazer para que haja uma real partilha de conhecimento extraído do seu Sistema Informação, que ao contrário de muitas empresas em Cabo Verde, é apoiada por Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação bem actuais e capazes. A memória permitiu alcançar os objectivos preconizados no início da elaboração da mesma, sem que tenha havido sobressaltos, apesar da escassa bibliografia.

The proposal to work on this final project came after several discussions held with Dr. Elzbieta Malinowski Gadja, who in 2008 published the book entitled Advanced Data Warehouse Design: From Conventional to Spatial and Temporal Applications (Data-Centric Systems and Applications). The project was carried out under the technical supervision of Dr. Malinowski and the direct beneficiary was the University of Costa Rica (UCR) where Dr. Malinowski is a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Informatics. The purpose of this project was twofold: First, to translate chapter III of said book with the intention of generating educational material for the use of the UCR and, second, to venture in the field of technical translation related to data warehouse. For the first component, the goal was to generate a final product that would eventually serve as an educational tool for the post-graduate courses of the UCR. For the second component, this project allowed me to acquire new skills and put into practice techniques that have helped me not only to perfom better in my current job as an Assistant Translator of the Inter-American BAnk (IDB), but also to use them in similar projects. The process was lenggthy and required torough research and constant communication with the author. The investigation focused on the search of terms and definitions to prepare the glossary, which was the basis to start the translation project. The translation process itself was carried out by phases, so that comments and corrections by the author could be taken into account in subsequent stages. Later, based on the glossary and the translated text, illustrations had been created in the Visio software were translated. In addition to the technical revision by the author, professor Carme Mangiron was in charge of revising the non-technical text. The result was a high-quality document that is currently used as reference and study material by the Department of Computer Science and Informatics of Costa Rica.

Continuous field mapping has to address two conflicting remote sensing requirements when collecting training data. On one hand, continuous field mapping trains fractional land cover and thus favours mixed training pixels. On the other hand, the spectral signature has to be preferably distinct and thus favours pure training pixels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of training data distribution along fractional and spectral gradients on the resulting mapping performance. We derived four continuous fields (tree, shrubherb, bare, water) from aerial photographs as response variables and processed corresponding spectral signatures from multitemporal Landsat 5 TM data as explanatory variables. Subsequent controlled experiments along fractional cover gradients were then based on generalised linear models. Resulting fractional and spectral distribution differed between single continuous fields, but could be satisfactorily trained and mapped. Pixels with fractional or without respective cover were much more critical than pure full cover pixels. Error distribution of continuous field models was non-uniform with respect to horizontal and vertical spatial distribution of target fields. We conclude that a sampling for continuous field training data should be based on extent and densities in the fractional and spectral, rather than the real spatial space. Consequently, adequate training plots are most probably not systematically distributed in the real spatial space, but cover the gradient and covariate structure of the fractional and spectral space well. El Business Intelligence ha pasado en los últimos 20 años de ser un capricho de unos pocos CIO, que podían permitirse destinar partidas presupuestarias para tal efecto, a convertirse en una realidad ya presente en muchas de las grandes empresas o una necesidad urgente para las que todavía no han implantado un sistema de esas características.La primera parte del presente documento, denominada “Estudio del Business Intelligence”, presenta una introducción a dicho concepto, desde la base. Explicando los conceptos teóricos clave necesarios para entender este tipo de soluciones, más adelante se comentan los componentes tecnológicos que van desde los procesos de extracción e integración de información a cómo debemos estructurar la información para facilitar el análisis. Por último, se repasan los diferentes tipos de aplicaciones que existen en el mercado así como las tendencias más actuales en este campo.La segunda parte del documento centra su foco en la implantación de un Cuadro de Mandos para el análisis de las ventas de una empresa, se identifican las diferentes fases del proyecto así como se entra en detalle de los requerimientos identificados. En último lugar, se presenta el desarrollo realizado del Cuadro de Mandos con tecnología Xcelsius, que permite exportar a flash el resultado y visualizarlo en cualquier navegador web.
