From research carried, out on a section of the Levriere, concretions (granules, nodules, which were sometimes joined together) partly covering the river ”bottom” were observed. The authors propose to make besides a petrographic examination of the calcareous precipitations and to see if their origin is connected to a biological activity, or if it is purely a case of a physical-chemical precipitation. The hydrological background of the Levriere, a small river of the Normandy Vexin, is given and conditions of the formation of the concretions studied.

In Mozambique, compliance with regulations in beach seines fishery is improved when the fishers themselves choose the season the government will declare closed. Beneficial side effects of co-management include a stronger sense of community and individual responsibility toward the common good. This article reports on a case study of fisheries co-management in the community of Inhassoro in the northern part of the province of Inhambane, about 800 km north of the capital of Mozambique, Maputo.

A proportionate random sample survey of 10 percent of the driftnet and Payang seine fishers in West Sumatra was carried out in 1998. A total of 45 driftnet and 66 lampara fishers were interviewed to obtain socioeconomic data on the fisheries. About 40 percent of the driftnet and 76 percent of the lampara fishers owned and operated their fishing vessels and gears indicating a high level of ownership of fishing assets by these small scale fishers. The lampara catches consisted mainly of eastern little tuna, skipjack tuna, yellow fin tuna and mackerel, while the driftnets caught mainly Spanish mackerel, Indian mackerel, eastern little tuna and scad.

Although selected aspects of the commercial fishery in the Virgin Islands have been documented since the early 1930's (Fiedler and Jarvis, 1932; Idyll and Randall, 1959; Hess, 1961; Swingle et al. 1970; Brownell, 1971; Brownell and Rainey, 1971; Sylvester and Dammann, 1972, and Olsen et al., 1978), fish corrals and their use have not been described. This account, based on personal observations made during 1985-86, summarizes commercial fishing methods in the Virgin Islands (U. S. and British), documents the use of fish corrals, and serves as an introduction to the methodologies of this harvesting technique. Interviews of commercial fishermen about how and when fish corrals are used provided information not available from direct observation. Local common names for gear type and fish species are shown in parentheses.

Setting a net in the water and hauling it up onto the beach manually by its two ends is one of the oldest methods of catching fish and it is still employed in several parts of the world: Ceylon is one of these. Here there are several hundreds of beach seines operated by several thousands of fishermen and they contribute 35-40% of Ceylon's total annual fish catch. This means that beach seining been and still is Ceylon's most important single method of fishing. In recent years the beach seine fishery has encountered difficulties which threaten its existence and the seiners have appealed repeatedly to the Department of Fisheries to undertake remedial action. There have been many and conflicting representations as to what this action should be, and the Department is seeking for a wise course through the confusion. As part of its search it asked its Research Division in April 1953, to undertake a study of the seine fishery to describe it, study the nature of its problems and to present any recommendations that seemed appropriate and consistent with the welfare of the fishing industry as a whole. The following is a report on the preliminary phases of that study.
