The option value problem with two costs is written as a variational inequality. The advantage of this formulation is that it takes place in a fixed domain. Thus no front tracking is needed for numerical approximation of the free boundary. An iterative algorithm is proposed which can be used to solve the nonlinear system obtained by finite differences or finite elements procedures. Especial care has to be taken in the design of differences finites schemes o finite elements due to the degeneracy of the differential operator. These schemes can be absortion or convection dominated nearly to the axis. This is a preliminary note to the study of this kind of problems.

The study developed in this thesis focuses on the modelling of landslides propagation with the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) meshless method which has the great advantage of allowing to deal with large deformation problems by avoiding expensive remeshing operations as happens for mesh methods such as, for example, the Finite Element Method. In this thesis, special attention is given to the role played by rheology and pore water pressure during these natural hazards. The mathematical framework used is based on the v - pw Biot-Zienkiewicz formulation, which represents the behaviour, formulated in terms of soil skeleton velocity and pore water pressure, of the mixture of solid particles and pore water in a saturated media. The governing equations are: • the mass balance equation for the pore water phase, • the momentum balance equation for the pore water phase and the mixture, • the constitutive equation and • a kinematic equation. Landslides, due to their shape and geometrical properties, have small depths in comparison with their length or width, therefore, the mathematical model aforementioned can then be simplified by depth integrating the equations, switching from a 3D to a 2D model, which presents an excellent combination of accuracy, computational costs and simplicity. The proposed model differs from previous depth integrated models by including a sub-model able to provide information on pore water pressure profiles at each computational step of the landslide's propagation. In an effective way, the evolution of the pore water pressure profiles is numerically solved through a set of 1D Finite Differences explicit scheme at each SPH node. This new approach is able to take into account the variation of the pore water pressure due to changes of height, vertical consolidation or changes of total stress. Concerning the constitutive behaviour, one of the main issues when modelling fast landslides is the difficulty to simulate with the same constitutive or rheological model the transition from the triggering phase, where the landslide behaves like a solid, to the propagation phase, where the landslide behaves in a fluid-like manner. In this work thesis, a new rheological model is proposed, based on the Perzyna viscoplastic model, thinking of viscoplasticity as the key to close the gap between the triggering and the propagation phase. In order to validate the mathematical model and the numerical approach, benchmarks and laboratory experiments are reproduced and compared to analytical solutions when possible. Finally, applications to real cases are studied, with particular attention paid to the Aberfan flowslide of 1966, showing how the mathematical model accurately and successfully simulate these kind of natural hazards.

Fluid flow and fabric compaction during vacuum assisted resin infusion (VARI) of composite materials was simulated using a level set-based approach. Fluid infusion through the fiber preform was modeled using Darcy’s equations for the fluid flow through a porous media. The stress partition between the fluid and the fiber bed was included by means of Terzaghi’s effective stress theory. Tracking the fluid front during infusion was introduced by means of the level set method. The resulting partial differential equations for the fluid infusion and the evolution of flow front were discretized and solved approximately using the finite differences method with a uniform grid discretization of the spatial domain. The model results were validated against uniaxial VARI experiments through an [0]8 E-glass plain woven preform. The physical parameters of the model were also independently measured. The model results (in terms of the fabric thickness, pressure and fluid front evolution during filling) were in good agreement with the numerical simulations, showing the potential of the level set method to simulate resin infusion

ABSTRACT The motivation of this work is the development of an automatic optimization strategy for large scale shape optimization problems that arise in the aeronautics industry to improve the aerodynamic performance; covering several aspects from the use of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS), the calculation of the gradients with the continuous adjoint formulation, the development of volumetric b-splines parameterization, mesh adaptation and intersection handling, to the adaptation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) algorithms to take advantage of highly parallel architectures in order to speed up the optimization process. With the development of the adjoint formulation, gradient-based methods for aerodynamic optimization become a promising approach to improve the aerodynamic performance of aircraft designs. The adjoint methodology allows the evaluation the gradients to all design variables of a cost function, such as drag or lift, at the equivalent cost of more or less one CFD simulation. However, some practical problems have been delaying its full implementation to the industry, which can be summarized as: integrability, computer performance, and adjoint robustness. This work tackles some of these issues and analyse them in well-known test cases. As summary, the contributions comprises: • The employment of NURBS as design variables in an automatic optimization loop for the improvement of the aerodynamic performance of aircraft wings in transonic regimen. • The development of point inversion algorithms to calculate the NURBS parametric coordinates from the space coordinates, to link with the computational grid vertex. • The use and validation of the adjoint formulation to calculate the gradients from the surface sensitivities in an automatic optimization loop and evaluate its reliability, compared with finite differences. • This work proposes some algorithms that take advantage of the underlying CAD geometry description, in the form of NURBS patches, to handle intersections and mesh adaptations. • There are not many usable libraries for NURBS available. In this work an open source library DOMINO NURBS has been developed and is offered to the community as free, open source code. • The implementation of a transonic CFD solver from scratch in a graphic card, for an assessment of the implementability of conventional CFD solvers for unstructured grids to highly parallel architectures. • Finally, this research proposes the use of the Green's function as an efficient paralellization scheme of numerical solvers. ABSTRACT This Thesis presents an efficient method for solving the forward dynamics of a multi-body sys-tem formed by rigid and flexible bodies with small strains for real-time simulation of real-life models. It is based on topological formulations. The presented work focuses on the efficient solution of the most time-consuming tasks of the simulation process, such as the numerical integration of the motion differential equations and in particular the evaluation of the inertia terms corresponding to the flexible bodies. The dynamic equations are formulated in terms of independent variables of the muti-body system, and they are integrated by means of implicit index-3 formulae. The Thesis is arranged in six chapters. Chapter 1 presents a review of the most relevant and recent contributions related to the modelization of flexible multi-body systems and the integration of the corresponding dynamic equations. The main objectives of the Thesis are also presented in detail. Chapter 2 presents a semi-recursive method for solving the equations of a multi-body system with flexible bodies based on topological formulations and modal synthesis. This Thesis uses the floating frame approach and the modal amplitudes to define the position of any point at the flexible body. These modal deformed shapes are obtained by means of the Finite Element Method. Particular attention has been taken to the boundary conditions used to define the deformation of the flexible bodies. Chapter 3 focuses on the evaluation of the inertia terms, which is usually a very time-consuming task. A new method based on the use of 24 constant matrices is presented. These matrices are evaluated during the set-up step, before the integration process. They allow the calculation of the inertia terms in terms of the position and orientation of the local coordinate system and the deformation variables, and there is no need to evaluate the position and velocities of all the nodes of the FEM mesh. A deep analysis of the inertia terms is performed in order to optimize the evaluation process, reducing both the terms used and the number of arithmetic operations. Two possible simplifications are presented: the first one uses a non-consistent approach in order to define the inertia terms respect to the Cartesian coordinates of the FEM mesh, rejecting those corresponding to the angular rotations; the second approach makes use of lumped mass matrices. Based on the previously presented formulation, Chapter 4 is focused on the numerical integration of the motion differential equations. A new predictor-corrector method based on index-3 formulae and on the use of multi-body independent variables is presented. The evaluation of the dynamic equations in a new time step needs the solution of a set on nonlinear equations by a Newton-Raphson iterative process. The computation of the corresponding residual vector is performed efficiently by taking advantage of the system’s topological structure. Three methods to compute the tangent matrix are presented: an approximated evaluation that considers only the most relevant terms, a numerical approach based on finite differences and a recursive method that uses the topological structure. The method presented for integrating the dynamic equations can use a variety of integration formulae. This Thesis analyses the use of the trapezoidal rule, the 2nd order BDF formula and the hybrid TR-BDF2 method. A variable-time step strategy is presented for the last one. Chapter 5 describes the implementation of the proposed method in a general purpose pro-gram for solving any multibody defined by a data file. This program is implemented both in C++ and Java. Four examples are used to check the validity of the formulation and to compare this method with other methods commonly used to solve the dynamic equations of multi-body systems containing flexible bodies. The efficiency of the programming methodology used and the effect of the possible simplifications proposed are also analyzed. Chapter 6 summarizes the main Conclusions obtained in this Thesis and the new lines of research that have been opened.

ABSTRACT Since the wall-bounded turbulence was first recognized more than one century ago, its near wall region (buffer layer) has been studied extensively and becomes relatively well understood due to the low local Reynolds number and narrow scale separation. The region just above the buffer layer, i.e., the logarithmic layer, is receiving increasingly more attention nowadays due to its self-similar property. Flores et al. (20076) and Flores & Jim´enez (2010) show that the statistics of logarithmic layer is kind of independent of other layers, implying that it might be possible to study it separately, which would reduce significantly the computational costs for simulations of the logarithmic layer. Some attempts were tried later by Mizuno & Jimenez (2013), who simulated the logarithmic layer without the buffer layer with obtained statistics agree reasonably well with those of full simulations. Besides, the logarithmic layer might be mimicked by other simpler sheardriven turbulence. For example, Pumir (1996) found that the statistically-stationary homogeneous shear turbulence (SS-HST) also bursts, in a manner strikingly similar to the self-sustaining process in wall-bounded turbulence. Based on these considerations, this thesis tries to reveal to what extent is the logarithmic layer of channels similar to the simplest shear-driven turbulence, SS-HST, by comparing both kinematics and dynamics of coherent structures in the two flows. Results about the channel are shown by Lozano-Dur´an et al. (2012) and Lozano-Dur´an & Jim´enez (20146). The roadmap of this task is divided into three stages. First, SS-HST is investigated by means of a new direct numerical simulation code, spectral in the two horizontal directions and compact-finite-differences in the direction of the shear. No remeshing is used to impose the shear-periodic boundary condition. The influence of the geometry of the computational box is explored. Since HST has no characteristic outer length scale and tends to fill the computational domain, longterm simulations of HST are ‘minimal’ in the sense of containing on average only a few large-scale structures. It is found that the main limit is the spanwise box width, Lz, which sets the length and velocity scales of the turbulence, and that the two other box dimensions should be sufficiently large (Lx > 2LZ, Ly > Lz) to prevent other directions to be constrained as well. It is also found that very long boxes, Lx > 2Ly, couple with the passing period of the shear-periodic boundary condition, and develop strong unphysical linearized bursts. Within those limits, the flow shows interesting similarities and differences with other shear flows, and in particular with the logarithmic layer of wallbounded turbulence. They are explored in some detail. They include a self-sustaining process for large-scale streaks and quasi-periodic bursting. The bursting time scale is approximately universal, ~ 20S~l (S is the mean shear rate), and the availability of two different bursting systems allows the growth of the bursts to be related with some confidence to the shearing of initially isotropic turbulence. It is concluded that SS-HST, conducted within the proper computational parameters, is a very promising system to study shear turbulence in general. Second, the same coherent structures as in channels studied by Lozano-Dur´an et al. (2012), namely three-dimensional vortex clusters (strong dissipation) and Qs (strong tangential Reynolds stress, -uv), are studied by direct numerical simulation of SS-HST with acceptable box aspect ratios and Reynolds number up to Rex ~ 250 (based on Taylor-microscale). The influence of the intermittency to time-independent threshold is discussed. These structures have similar elongations in the streamwise direction to detached families in channels until they are of comparable size to the box. Their fractal dimensions, inner and outer lengths as a function of volume agree well with their counterparts in channels. The study about their spatial organizations found that Qs of the same type are aligned roughly in the direction of the velocity vector in the quadrant they belong to, while Qs of different types are restricted by the fact that there should be no velocity clash, which makes Q2s (ejections, u < 0, v > 0) and Q4s (sweeps, u > 0, v < 0) paired in the spanwise direction. This is verified by inspecting velocity structures, other quadrants such as u-w and v-w in SS-HST and also detached families in the channel. The streamwise alignment of attached Qs with the same type in channels is due to the modulation of the wall. The average flow field conditioned to Q2-Q4 pairs found that vortex clusters are in the middle of the pair, but prefer to the two shear layers lodging at the top and bottom of Q2s and Q4s respectively, which makes the spanwise vorticity inside vortex clusters does not cancel. The wall amplifies the difference between the sizes of low- and high-speed streaks associated with attached Q2-Q4 pairs as the pairs reach closer to the wall, which is verified by the correlation of streamwise velocity conditioned to attached Q2s and Q4s with different heights. Vortex clusters in SS-HST associated with Q2s or Q4s are also flanked by a counter rotating streamwise vortices in the spanwise direction as in the channel. The long conical ‘wake’ originates from tall attached vortex clusters found by del A´ lamo et al. (2006) and Flores et al. (2007b), which disappears in SS-HST, is only true for tall attached vortices associated with Q2s but not for those associated with Q4s, whose averaged flow field is actually quite similar to that in SS-HST. Third, the temporal evolutions of Qs and vortex clusters are studied by using the method invented by Lozano-Dur´an & Jim´enez (2014b). Structures are sorted into branches, which are further organized into graphs. Both spatial and temporal resolutions are chosen to be able to capture the most probable pointwise Kolmogorov length and time at the most extreme moment. Due to the minimal box effect, there is only one main graph consist by almost all the branches, with its instantaneous volume and number of structures follow the intermittent kinetic energy and enstrophy. The lifetime of branches, which makes more sense for primary branches, loses its meaning in SS-HST because the contributions of primary branches to total Reynolds stress or enstrophy are almost negligible. This is also true in the outer layer of channels. Instead, the lifetime of graphs in channels are compared with the bursting time in SS-HST. Vortex clusters are associated with almost the same quadrant in terms of their mean velocities during their life time, especially for those related with ejections and sweeps. As in channels, ejections in SS-HST move upwards with an average vertical velocity uτ (friction velocity) while the opposite is true for sweeps. Vortex clusters, on the other hand, are almost still in the vertical direction. In the streamwise direction, they are advected by the local mean velocity and thus deformed by the mean velocity difference. Sweeps and ejections move faster and slower than the mean velocity respectively, both by 1.5uτ . Vortex clusters move with the same speed as the mean velocity. It is verified that the incoherent structures near the wall is due to the wall instead of small size. The results suggest that coherent structures in channels are not particularly associated with the wall, or even with a given shear profile.

Over the past decade, the numerical modeling of the magnetic field evolution in astrophysical scenarios has become an increasingly important field. In the crystallized crust of neutron stars the evolution of the magnetic field is governed by the Hall induction equation. In this equation the relative contribution of the two terms (Hall term and Ohmic dissipation) varies depending on the local conditions of temperature and magnetic field strength. This results in the transition from the purely parabolic character of the equations to the hyperbolic regime as the magnetic Reynolds number increases, which presents severe numerical problems. Up to now, most attempts to study this problem were based on spectral methods, but they failed in representing the transition to large magnetic Reynolds numbers. We present a new code based on upwind finite differences techniques that can handle situations with arbitrary low magnetic diffusivity and it is suitable for studying the formation of sharp current sheets during the evolution. The code is thoroughly tested in different limits and used to illustrate the evolution of the crustal magnetic field in a neutron star in some representative cases. Our code, coupled to cooling codes, can be used to perform long-term simulations of the magneto-thermal evolution of neutron stars.

Non-Fourier models of heat conduction are increasingly being considered in the modeling of microscale heat transfer in engineering and biomedical heat transfer problems. The dual-phase-lagging model, incorporating time lags in the heat flux and the temperature gradient, and some of its particular cases and approximations, result in heat conduction modeling equations in the form of delayed or hyperbolic partial differential equations. In this work, the application of difference schemes for the numerical solution of lagging models of heat conduction is considered. Numerical schemes for some DPL approximations are developed, characterizing their properties of convergence and stability. Examples of numerical computations are included.

Different non-Fourier models of heat conduction, that incorporate time lags in the heat flux and/or the temperature gradient, have been increasingly considered in the last years to model microscale heat transfer problems in engineering. Numerical schemes to obtain approximate solutions of constant coefficients lagging models of heat conduction have already been proposed. In this work, an explicit finite difference scheme for a model with coefficients variable in time is developed, and their properties of convergence and stability are studied. Numerical computations showing examples of applications of the scheme are presented.

Dual-phase-lagging (DPL) models constitute a family of non-Fourier models of heat conduction that allow for the presence of time lags in the heat flux and the temperature gradient. These lags may need to be considered when modeling microscale heat transfer, and thus DPL models have found application in the last years in a wide range of theoretical and technical heat transfer problems. Consequently, analytical solutions and methods for computing numerical approximations have been proposed for particular DPL models in different settings. In this work, a compact difference scheme for second order DPL models is developed, providing higher order precision than a previously proposed method. The scheme is shown to be unconditionally stable and convergent, and its accuracy is illustrated with numerical examples.

The Double Convected Pom-Pom model was recently introduced to circumvent some numerical and theological defects found in other formulations of the Pom-Pom concept. It is used here for the simulation of a benchmark problem: the flow in an abrupt planar contraction. The predictions are compared with birefringence measurements and show reasonable quantitative agreement with experimental data. A parametric study is also carried out with the aim of analysing the effect of the branching parameter on vortex dynamics and extrudate swell. The results show that the Double Convected Pom-Pom model (DCPP) model is able to discriminate between branched and linear macromolecular structures in accordance with experimental observations. In that respect, the role of the extensional properties in determining complex flow behaviour is stressed. Also, the ratio of the first normal stress difference to the shear stress appears to play a major role in die swell observation. For the time being, the role of the second normal stress difference appears to be less obvious to evaluate in this complex flow. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

-scale vary from a planetary scale and million years for convection problems to 100km and 10 years for fault systems simulations. Various techniques are in use to deal with the time dependency (e.g. Crank-Nicholson), with the non-linearity (e.g. Newton-Raphson) and weakly coupled equations (e.g. non-linear Gauss-Seidel). Besides these high-level solution algorithms discretization methods (e.g. finite element method (FEM), boundary element method (BEM)) are used to deal with spatial derivatives. Typically, large-scale, three dimensional meshes are required to resolve geometrical complexity (e.g. in the case of fault systems) or features in the solution (e.g. in mantel convection simulations). The modelling environment escript allows the rapid implementation of new physics as required for the development of simulation codes in earth sciences. Its main object is to provide a programming language, where the user can define new models and rapidly develop high-level solution algorithms. The current implementation is linked with the finite element package finley as a PDE solver. However, the design is open and other discretization technologies such as finite differences and boundary element methods could be included. escript is implemented as an extension of the interactive programming environment python (see www.python.org). Key concepts introduced are Data objects, which are holding values on nodes or elements of the finite element mesh, and linearPDE objects, which are defining linear partial differential equations to be solved by the underlying discretization technology. In this paper we will show the basic concepts of escript and will show how escript is used to implement a simulation code for interacting fault systems. We will show some results of large-scale, parallel simulations on an SGI Altix system. The analysis and prediction of the dynamic behaviour of s7ructural components plays an important role in modern engineering design. :n this work, the so-called "mixed" finite element models based on Reissnen's variational principle are applied to the solution of free and forced vibration problems, for beam and :late structures. The mixed beam models are obtained by using elements of various shape functions ranging from simple linear to complex cubic and quadratic functions. The elements were in general capable of predicting the natural frequencies and dynamic responses with good accuracy. An isoparametric quadrilateral element with 8-nodes was developed for application to thin plate problems. The element has 32 degrees of freedom (one deflection, two bending and one twisting moment per node) which is suitable for discretization of plates with arbitrary geometry. A linear isoparametric element and two non-conforming displacement elements (4-node and 8-node quadrilateral) were extended to the solution of dynamic problems. An auto-mesh generation program was used to facilitate the preparation of input data required by the 8-node quadrilateral elements of mixed and displacement type. Numerical examples were solved using both the mixed beam and plate elements for predicting a structure's natural frequencies and dynamic response to a variety of forcing functions. The solutions were compared with the available analytical and displacement model solutions. The mixed elements developed have been found to have significant advantages over the conventional displacement elements in the solution of plate type problems. A dramatic saving in computational time is possible without any loss in solution accuracy. With beam type problems, there appears to be no significant advantages in using mixed models.
