We present iron (Fe) concentration and Fe isotope data for a sediment core transect across the Peru upwelling area, which hosts one of the ocean's most pronounced oxygen minimum zones (OMZs). The lateral progression of total Fe to aluminum ratios (FeT/Al) across the continental margin indicates that sediments within the OMZ are depleted in Fe whereas sediments below the OMZ are enriched in Fe relative to the lithogenic background. Rates of Fe loss within the OMZ, as inferred from FeT/Al ratios and sedimentation rates, are in agreement with benthic flux data that were calculated from pore water concentration gradients. The mass of Fe lost from sediments within the OMZ is within the same order of magnitude as the mass of Fe accumulating below the OMZ. Taken together, our data are in agreement with a shuttle scenario where Fe is reductively remobilized from sediments within the OMZ, laterally transported within the anoxic water column and re-precipitated within the more oxic water below the OMZ. Sediments within the OMZ have increased 56Fe/54Fe isotope ratios relative to the lithogenic background, which is consistent with the general notion of benthic release of dissolved Fe with a relatively low 56Fe/54Fe isotope ratio. The Fe isotope ratios increase across the margin and the highest values coincide with the greatest Fe enrichment in sediments below the OMZ. The apparent mismatch in isotope composition between the Fe that is released within the OMZ and Fe that is re-precipitated below the OMZ implies that only a fraction of the sediment-derived Fe is retained near-shore whereas another fraction is transported further offshore. We suggest that a similar open-marine shuttle is likely to operate along many ocean margins. The observed sedimentary fingerprint of the open-marine Fe shuttle differs from a related transport mechanism in isolated euxinic basins (e.g., the Black Sea) where the laterally supplied, reactive Fe is quantitatively captured within the basin sediments. We suggest that our findings are useful to identify OMZ-type Fe cycling in the geological record.

During two field campaigns (Austral springs 2011 and 2012) the sedimentary architecture of a polar gravel-beach system at the southwestern coast of Potter Peninsula (Area 2) was revealed using ground-penetrating radar (GPR, Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. SIR-3000). 49 profiles were collected using a mono-static 200 MHz antenna operated in common offset mode. Trace increment was set to 0.05 m. A differential global-positioning system (dGPS, Leica GS09) was used to obtain topographical information along the GPR lines. GPR data are provided in RADAN-Format, dGPS coordinates are provided in ascii format; projection is UTM (WGS 84, zone 21S).

This research explores the policy implications of the approval of three wind energy projects on the Oak Ridges Moraine, and their impact on the Coordinated Land Use Planning Review process. Specifically, it focuses on the involvement of First Nations and environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs). This research was conducted through analyzing submissions to the Coordinated Land Use Planning Review, related legislation and policy, Environmental Review Tribunal hearing documents, and interviews with key informants. This research culminates in a number of recommendations to the Coordinated Review informed by the analysis.

In this paper, we proposed a new method using long digital straight segments (LDSSs) for fingerprint recognition based on such a discovery that LDSSs in fingerprints can accurately characterize the global structure of fingerprints. Different from the estimation of orientation using the slope of the straight segments, the length of LDSSs provides a measure for stability of the estimated orientation. In addition, each digital straight segment can be represented by four parameters: x-coordinate, y-coordinate, slope and length. As a result, only about 600 bytes are needed to store all the parameters of LDSSs of a fingerprint, as is much less than the storage orientation field needs. Finally, the LDSSs can well capture the structural information of local regions. Consequently, LDSSs are more feasible to apply to the matching process than orientation fields. The experiments conducted on fingerprint databases FVC2002 DB3a and DB4a show that our method is effective.

Until recently the use of biometrics was restricted to high-security environments and criminal identification applications, for economic and technological reasons. However, in recent years, biometric authentication has become part of daily lives of people. The large scale use of biometrics has shown that users within the system may have different degrees of accuracy. Some people may have trouble authenticating, while others may be particularly vulnerable to imitation. Recent studies have investigated and identified these types of users, giving them the names of animals: Sheep, Goats, Lambs, Wolves, Doves, Chameleons, Worms and Phantoms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the existence of these users types in a database of fingerprints and propose a new way of investigating them, based on the performance of verification between subjects samples. Once introduced some basic concepts in biometrics and fingerprint, we present the biometric menagerie and how to evaluate them.

The Mid-oceanic ridge system is a feature unique to Earth. It is one of the fundamental components of plate tectonics and reflects interior processes of mantle convection within the Earth. The thermal structure beneath the mid-ocean ridges has been the subject of several modeling studies. It is expected that the elastic thickness of the lithosphere is larger near the transform faults that bound mid-ocean ridge segments. Oceanic core complexes (OCCs), which are generally thought to result from long-lived fault slip and elastic flexure, have a shape that is sensitive to elastic thickness. By modeling the shape of OCCs emplaced along a ridge segment, it is possible to constraint elastic thickness and therefore the thermal structure of the plate and how it varies along-axis. This thesis builds upon previous studies that utilize thin plate flexure to reproduce the shape of OCCs. I compare OCC shape to a suite of models in which elastic thickness, fault dip, fault heave, crustal thickness, and axial infill are systematically varied. Using a grid search, I constrain the parameters that best reproduce the bathymetry and/or the slope of ten candidate OCCs identified along the 12°—15°N segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The lithospheric elastic thicknesses that explains these OCCs is thinner than previous investigators suggested and the fault planes dip more shallowly in the subsurface, although at an angle compatible with Anderson’s theory of faulting. No relationships between model parameters and an oceanic core complexes location within a segment are identified with the exception that the OCCs located less than 20km from a transform fault have slightly larger elastic thickness than OCCs in the middle of the ridge segment.

Purpose: To develop a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint method for the quality control and origin discrimination of Gastrodiae rhizoma . Methods: Twelve batches of G. rhizoma collected from Sichuan, Guizhou and Shanxi provinces in china were used to establish the fingerprint. The chromatographic peak (gastrodin) was taken as the reference peak, and all sample separation was performed on a Agilent C18 (250 mm×4.6 mmx5 μm) column with a column temperature of 25 °C. The mobile phase was acetonitrile/0.8 % phosphate water solution (in a gradient elution mode) and the flow rate of 1 mL/min. The detection wavelength was 270 nm. The method was validated as per the guidelines of Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Results: The chromatograms of the samples showed 11 common peaks, of which no. 4 was identified as that of Gastrodin. Data for the samples were analyzed statistically using similarity analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The similarity index between reference chromatogram and samples’ chromatograms were all > 0.80. The similarity index of G. rhizoma from Guizhou, Shanxi and Sichuan is evident as follows: 0.854 - 0.885, 0.915 - 0.930 and 0.820 - 0.848, respectively. The samples could be divided into three clusters at a rescaled distance of 7.5: S1 - S4 as cluster 1; S5 - S8 cluster 2, and others grouped into cluster 3. Conclusion: The findings indicate that HPLC fingerprinting technology is appropriate for quality control and origin discrimination of G. rhizoma.

Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência de diferentes cultivares e sazonalidade do açaí utilizando a técnica de 1H NMR para criação de perfis de impressão digital associada a métodos quimiométricos, obtidos a partir de frutos geneticamente modificados (cultivada no controle agronômico) e o comércio na cidade de Belém
