The finite-difference time domain (FDTD) technique and the Pade approximation with Baker's algorithm are used to calculate the mode frequencies and quality factors of cavities. Comparing with the fast Fourier transformation/Pade method, we find that the Fade approximation and the Baker's algorithm can obtain exact resonant frequencies and quality factors based on a much shorter time record of the FDTD output.

In the present work, a Cz-Silicon wafer is implanted with helium ions to produce a buried porous layer, and then thermally annealed in a dry oxygen atmosphere to make oxygen transport into the cavities. The formation of the buried oxide layer in the case of internal oxidation (ITOX) of the buried porous layer of cavities in the silicon sample is studied by positron beam annihilation (PBA). The cavities are formed by 15 keV He implantation at a fluence of 2 x 10(16) cm(-2) and followed by thermal annealing at 673 K for 30 min in vacuum. The internal oxidation is carried out at temperatures ranging from 1073 to 1473 K for 2 h in a dry oxygen atmosphere. The layered structures evolved in the silicon are detected by using the PBA and the thicknesses of their layers and nature are also investigated. It is found that rather high temperatures must be chosen to establish a sufficient flux of oxygen into the cavity layer. On the other hand high temperatures lead to coarsening the cavities and removing the cavity layer finally.

A simple approach combining sonication and sol-gel chemistry was employed to synthesize silica coated carbon nanotube (CNTs) coaxial nanocables. It was found that a homogeneous silica layer can be coated on the surface of the CNTs. This method is simple, rapid, and reproducible. Furthermore, gold nanoparticle supported coaxial nanocables were facilely obtained using amino-functionalized silica as the interlinker. Furthermore, to reduce the cost of Pt in fuel cells, designing a Pt shell on the surface of a noble metal such as gold or silver is necessary. High-density gold/platinum hybrid nanoparticles were located on the surface of I-D coaxial nanocables with high surface-to-volume ratios. It was found that this hybrid nanomaterial exhibits a high electrocatalytic activity for enhancing oxygen reduction (low overpotential associated with the oxygen reduction reaction and almost four-electron electroreduction of dioxygen to water).

In this paper, we have reported a very simple strategy (combined sonication with sol-gel techniques) for synthesizing well-defined silica-coated carbon nanotube (CNT) coaxial nanocable without prior CNT functionalization. After functionalization with NH2 group, the CNT/silica coaxial nanocable has been employed as a three-dimensional support for loading ultra-high-density metal or hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) such as gold NPs, Au/Pt hybrid NPs, Pt hollow NPs, and Au/Ag core/shell NPs. Most importantly, it is found that the ultra-high-density Au/Pt NPs supported on coaxial nanocables (UASCN) could be used as enhanced materials for constructing electrochemical devices with high performance. Four model probe molecules (O-2, CH3OH, H2O2, and NH2NH2) have been investigated on UASCN-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). It was observed that the present UASCN exhibited high electrocatalytic activity toward diverse molecules and was a promising electrocatalyst for constructing electrochemical devices with high performance. For instance, the detection limit for H2O2 with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 was found to be 0.3 mu M, which was lower than certain enzyme-based biosensors.

A simple, large scale, and one-step process for the preparation of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(I) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) doped SiO2@carbon nanotubes (MVNTs) coaxial nanocable used for an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is presented for the first time. More importantly, a directly coated as-formed functional material on ITO electrode surface exhibits excellent ECL behavior, good stability, and high sensitivity in the presence of tripropylamine (TPA). This novel functional material will find potential applications in biosensor, electrophoresis and electroanalysis.

We present a simple, generally applicable procedure for obtaining diameter-controlled SiO2@ carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coaxial nanocables. These coaxial nanocables with high solubility in polar solvents, have been used as functional templates for assembling CNTs/Au nanorods heterogeneous nanostructures to form multifunctional assembly system. These hybrid nanostructures may find applications in nanoelectronics, photonics, and nanodevices.

A novel manganese phosphomolybdate, [H3N(CH2)(4)NH3](H3O)(2){[Mn(phen)(2)](4)[(MnMovO30)-O-12(HPO4)(6)(H2PO4)(2)]} . 4H(2)O 1, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal data: triclinic, P (1) over bar, a = 14.172(7) Angstrom, b = 16.547(2) Angstrom, c = 16.679(3) Angstrom, alpha = 62.881(12)degrees, beta = 73.83(3)degrees, gamma = 88.81(3)degrees. X-ray crystallography shows that the [Mn(phen)(2)] fragments are covalently bonded to the [Mn(Mo6P4)(2)] dimers leading to a one-dimensional chain with rectangular cavities occupied by tetramethylene-diamine cations and water molecules. The TEM study of titanium-containing ZSM-5 zeolite before and after hydrothermal treatment was performed. The use of different TEM techniques, such as conventional TEM, HRTEM and EDX-line scans provides important information about the microscopic structure of the zeolite catalyst consisting from several phases. The hydrothermal treatment of zeolite powder leads to strong changes in the morphology of the constituting particles. They are characterized by a homogeneous structure before hydrothermal treatment while the occurrence of holes after thermal treatment was observed, These changes lead to the enrichment of zeolite with titanium which obviously enhance its catalytic activity. Some of the titanium surplus precipitates as TiO2 anatase nanoparticles within the holes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
