The box scheme proposed by H. B. Keller is a numerical method for solving parabolic partial differential equations. We give a convergence proof of this scheme for the heat equation, for a linear parabolic system, and for a class of nonlinear parabolic equations. Von Neumann stability is shown to hold for the box scheme combined with the method of fractional steps to solve the two-dimensional heat equation. Computations were performed on Burgers' equation with three different initial conditions, and Richardson extrapolation is shown to be effective.

O ambiente universitário é um espaço estratégico para a promoção da alimentação saudável e da segurança alimentar e nutricional, pois muitos hábitos alimentares adquiridos pelos estudantes se mantêm na idade adulta. No Brasil, nos últimos anos, esse ambiente passou a ser ainda mais estratégico, uma vez que incorporou medidas de ação afirmativa (sistema de cotas) e de permanência dos estudantes. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o impacto da implementação do Restaurante Universitário (RU) na alimentação de estudantes de uma universidade pública brasileira. Seus resultados estão apresentados na forma de dois artigos. O primeiro objetivou descrever as práticas alimentares de estudantes do campus Maracanã da UERJ antes da implementação do RU e examiná-las segundo sua forma de ingresso na universidade (cotistas e não cotistas). No segundo semestre de 2011, foi realizado um estudo seccional com o universo de estudantes ingressantes no primeiro semestre daquele ano. Utilizou-se questionário autopreenchido e identificado que abarcou os hábitos de realizar desjejum e de substituir o almoço e/ou o jantar por lanche regularmente (≥ 5 dias/semana) e o consumo regular (≥ 5 dias/semana) de alimentos marcadores de alimentação saudável e não saudável. Participaram do estudo 1336 estudantes. Foram descritas e comparadas a distribuição da frequência semanal dessas práticas e, também, a proporção de estudantes que realizaram essas práticas em pelo menos cinco dias na semana que antecedeu o estudo. Foram observadas proporções expressivas de: não realização do desjejum, substituição do jantar por lanche, baixo consumo de frutas, hortaliças e feijão e consumo frequente de bebidas açucaradas, guloseimas e biscoitos e/ou salgadinhos de pacote. Entre cotistas, foi mais frequente o consumo de feijão, de biscoitos e/ou salgadinhos de pacote e de biscoitos doces e menos frequentes a substituição de jantar por lanche e o consumo de hortaliças e de frutas. Cotistas e não cotistas apresentaram práticas alimentares com algumas semelhanças e desfavoráveis para a saúde. As diferenças observadas entre os dois grupos foram, em sua maioria, na direção de um quadro mais desfavorável para os cotistas, exceto para o feijão. O segundo artigo objetivou avaliar o impacto da implementação do RU sobre as práticas alimentares dos estudantes segundo forma de ingresso na universidade. Para isso, entre os meses de dezembro de 2012 e março de 2013, os estudantes responderam outra vez o questionário autopreenchido no baseline complementado com questões sobre utilização do RU (n= 1131). A variação das práticas alimentares foi examinada pela diferença entre proporções obtidas antes e depois da implementação do RU e pela trajetória individual de cada estudante em relação às práticas estudadas. Foi observada associação entre maior assiduidade ao RU e maior frequência de consumo regular de feijão, hortaliças, hortaliças cruas, hortaliças cozidas e frutas e, também, menor frequência de consumo regular de batata frita e/ou salgados fritos e de biscoitos e/ou salgadinhos de pacote. Quando comparados aos demais, os usuários assíduos tiveram maior chance de trajetória positiva para realização do almoço, do jantar e consumo de feijão, hortaliças, hortaliças cruas, frutas e guloseimas e menor chance de trajetória negativa para consumo de feijão, hortaliças cruas, batata frita e/ou salgados fritos. Cotistas assíduos ao RU apresentaram resultados favoráveis para consumo de feijão, hortaliças, hortaliças cruas, biscoitos e/ou salgadinhos de pacote e batata frita e/ou salgados fritos e não cotistas assíduos ao RU, para consumo de feijão, hortaliças cruas, embutidos e guloseimas. A implementação do RU promoveu a melhoria na alimentação dos estudantes assíduos ao RU.

An easy-to-interpret kinematic quantity measuring the average corotation of material line segments near a point is introduced and applied to vortex identification. At a given point, the vector of average corotation of line segments is defined as the average of the instantaneous local rigid-body rotation over "all planar cross sections" passing through the examined point. The vortex-identification method based on average corotation is a one-parameter, region-type local method sensitive to the axial stretching rate as well as to the inner configuration of the velocity gradient tensor. The method is derived from a well-defined interpretation of the local flow kinematics to determine the "plane of swirling" and is also applicable to compressible and variable-density flows. Practical application to direct numerical simulation datasets includes a hairpin vortex of boundary-layer transition, the reconnection process of two Burgers vortices, a flow around an inclined flat plate, and a flow around a revolving insect wing. The results agree well with some popular local methods and perform better in regions of strong shearing. Copyright © 2013 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. A generalized theory for the viscoelastic behavior of idealized bituminous mixtures (asphalts) is presented. The mathematical model incorporates strain rate and temperature dependency as well as nonmonotonic loading and unloading with shape recovery. The stiffening effect of the aggregate is included. The model is of phenomenological nature. It can be calibrated using a relatively limited set of experimental parameters, obtainable by uniaxial tests. It is shown that the mathematical model can be represented as a special nonlinear form of the Burgers model. This facilitates the derivation of numerical algorithms for solving the constitutive equations. A numerical scheme is implemented in a user material subroutine (UMAT) in the finite-element analysis (FEA) code ABAQUS. Simulation results are compared with uniaxial and indentation tests on an idealized asphalt mix. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The relaxation of the misfit strain by the formation of misfit dislocations in InxGa1-xN/GaN multiple quantum wells grown by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition was investigated by the cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, double crystal x-ray diffraction, and temperature-dependent photoluminescence. It is found that the misfit dislocations generated from strain relaxation are all pure-edge threading dislocations with burgers vectors of b=1/3<11 (2) over bar0>. The misfit dislocations arise from the strain relaxation due to the thickness of strained layer greater than the critical thickness. The relaxation of strained layer was mainly achieved by the formation of dislocations and localization of In, while the dislocations changed their slip planes from {0001} to {10 (1) over bar0}. With the increasing temperature, the efficiency of photoluminescence decrease sharply. It indicates that the relaxation of the misfit strain has a strong effect on optical efficiency of film. We investigate the development of cross-hatch grid surface morphology in growing mismatched layers and its effect on ordering growth of quantum dots (QDs). For a 60degrees dislocation (MD), the effective part in strain relaxation is the part with the Burgers vector parallel to the film/substrate interface within its b(edge) component; so the surface stress over a MD is asymmetric. When the strained layer is relatively thin, the surface morphology is cross-hatch grid with asymmetric ridges and valleys. When the strained layer is relatively thick, the ridges become nearly symmetrical, and the dislocations and the ridges inclined-aligned. In the following growth of InAs, QDs prefer to nucleate on top of the ridges. By selecting ultra-thin In0.15Ga0.85As layer (50nm) and controlling the QDs layer at just formed QDs, we obtained ordered InAs QDs. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We demonstrate a technique based on wet chemical etching that enables quick and accurate evaluation of edge- and screw/mixed-type threading dislocations (TDs) in GaN. Large and small etch pits are formed by phosphoric acid on the etched surfaces. The large etch pits are attributed to screw/mixed TDs and the small ones to edge TDs, according to their locations on the surface and Burgers vectors of TDs. Additionally, the origin of small etch pits is confirmed by a transmission electron microscopy. The difference in the size of etch pits is discussed in view of their origin and merging. Overetching at elevated temperatures or for a long time may result in merging of individual etch pits and underestimating of the density of TDs. Wet chemical etching has also been proved efficient in revealing the distribution of TDs in epitaxial lateral overgrowth GaN.

Conventional transmission electron microscopy and energy-filtering were used to study the dislocations and nanocavities in proton-implanted [001] silicon. A two-dimensional network of dislocations and nanocavities was found after a two-step annealing, while only isolated cavities were present in single-step annealed Si. In addition, two-step annealing increased materially the size and density of the nanocavities. The Burgers vector of the dislocations was mainly the 1/2[110] type. The self-organized InAs/In0.52Al0.48As nanostructure were grown on InP (001) using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The nanostructure has been studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The edge dislocations with the Burgers vector b = ([001]/2) and extending along the [$(110) over bar $] direction are observed. The results show that in the region near an edge dislocation, no InAs wires were formed, while in the regions free of dislocation, wire-like nanostructures were formed. The mechanisms for the formation of the [001]/2 edge dislocations were discussed.

  制备了Mg-4.5wt%Zn-1~5wt%RE系合金(RE元素包括轻稀土:La、Ce、Nd、Sm;重稀土:Gd和Y),研究了铸态和热处理态合金的组织和性能。(1)适量的稀土元素均可细化合金晶粒,其中轻稀土元素的细化效果好于重稀土元素;(2)含轻稀土元素合金中的析出相主要为(Mg,Zn)17RE2和Mg4Zn7,而含重稀土元素的合金中的析出相主要为MgZnxREy(Mg3Zn6RE, Mg3RE2Zn3)和Mg4Zn7;(3)加入稀土元素后,合金的强度提高;稀土含量相同时,含轻稀土元素的强化效果较好。Mg-4.5Zn-1Ce合金具有最高的强度。T5处理态合金的抗拉强度、屈服强度和伸长率分别为236 MPa、111 MPa和15.8%,T6处理态合金分别为233 MPa、131 MPa和8.9%。强度提高的主要原因是合金中生成了大量的纳米级Mg4Zn7强化相,以及晶界沉淀相的连续性降低;(4)含重稀土元素合金的时效硬化效果高于含轻稀土元素的合金,经T6处理后,含重稀土元素合金的断裂强度和屈服强度均提高,而含轻稀土元素合金只有屈服强度提高。   研究了挤压变形Mg-4.5Zn-1Ce合金的组织和性能。473 K时效后峰值态合金具有较高抗拉强度和屈服强度,其值分别为291 MPa和239 MPa,比铸态分别提提高了55 MPa和128 MPa。高强度产生的原因是合金中生成了大量棒状和点状混合结构的纳米级Mg4Zn7强化相和晶粒的细化。   应用Edge-to-edge匹配模型成功预测了MgZn2/α-Mg体系中的位相关系,扩大了该模型的应用范围。并对模型进行了改进,主要体现在:1)确定匹配方向的平面上所有原子的中心位置需在平面上;2)匹配方向之间可任意配对。应用优化后的模型预测了Mg17Al12/α-Mg体系中的位相关系,预测结果与实验结果的吻合率为4/6,好于原模型预测的吻合率4/8。另外,使用优化后的模型,成功的预测出了理想的Burgers位相关系,从而证实了该位相关系是确实存在的,而不是near Burgers位相关系测定的误差。使用优化后的模型还成功的解释了该合金体系中稀土元素的晶粒细化机制和沉淀强化机制。

应用电子显微镜首次在ZnTe外延膜中观察到分布在(111)和(-1-11)滑移面上、宽度为40nm的三重位错带。每条位错带含有三根不全位错,其Burgers矢量为三个相同的<112>a/6。在进行了各种衍衬的分析和模拟之后,这类三重位错带被证明是由两个部分重叠的层错组成的。它们的来源归结为两个相互垂直扩展的失配位错的“强制”反应。

将作者提出的数值摄动算法改进为区分离散单元内上游和下游并分别对通量进行高精度重构的双重数值摄动算法,与原(单重)摄动算法相比,双重摄动算法既提高了格式精度又明显扩大了格式的稳定域范围,利用双重摄动算法,即分别利用上游和下游基点变量的摄动重构将高阶流体力学关系及迎风机制耦合进二阶中心格式之中,由此构建了对流扩散方程的对网格Reynolds数的任意值均稳定(绝对稳定)高精度(四阶和八阶精度)三基点中心TVD差分格式,通过解析分析以及3个算例计算证实了构建格式的优良性能;3个算例包括一维线性、非线性(Burgers方程)和二维变系数对流扩散方程,数值计算表明:构建的格式在粗网格下不振荡,构建格式在粗网格时的最大误差L∞和均方误差L2与二阶中心格式在细网格时的相应误差一致,对线性方程,构建格式在细网格下可达到L2精度阶

Sonic boom propagation in a quiet) stratified) lossy atmosphere is the subject of this dissertation. Two questions are considered in detail: (1) Does waveform freezing occur? (2) Are sonic booms shocks in steady state? Both assumptions have been invoked in the past to predict sonic boom waveforms at the ground. A very general form of the Burgers equation is derived and used as the model for the problem. The derivation begins with the basic conservation equations. The effects of nonlinearity) attenuation and dispersion due to multiple relaxations) viscosity) and heat conduction) geometrical spreading) and stratification of the medium are included. When the absorption and dispersion terms are neglected) an analytical solution is available. The analytical solution is used to answer the first question. Geometrical spreading and stratification of the medium are found to slow down the nonlinear distortion of finite-amplitude waves. In certain cases the distortion reaches an absolute limit) a phenomenon called waveform freezing. Judging by the maturity of the distortion mechanism, sonic booms generated by aircraft at 18 km altitude are not frozen when they reach the ground. On the other hand, judging by the approach of the waveform to its asymptotic shape, N waves generated by aircraft at 18 km altitude are frozen when they reach the ground. To answer the second question we solve the full Burgers equation and for this purpose develop a new computer code, THOR. The code is based on an algorithm by Lee and Hamilton (J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97, 906-917, 1995) and has the novel feature that all its calculations are done in the time domain, including absorption and dispersion. Results from the code compare very well with analytical solutions. In a NASA exercise to compare sonic boom computer programs, THOR gave results that agree well with those of other participants and ran faster. We show that sonic booms are not steady state waves because they travel through a varying medium, suffer spreading, and fail to approximate step shocks closely enough. Although developed to predict sonic boom propagation, THOR can solve other problems for which the extended Burgers equation is a good propagation model.

We study the problem of consistent interactions for spin-3 gauge fields in flat spacetime of arbitrary dimension 3$">n>3. Under the sole assumptions of Poincaré and parity invariance, local and perturbative deformation of the free theory, we determine all nontrivial consistent deformations of the abelian gauge algebra and classify the corresponding deformations of the quadratic action, at first order in the deformation parameter. We prove that all such vertices are cubic, contain a total of either three or five derivatives and are uniquely characterized by a rank-three constant tensor (an internal algebra structure constant). The covariant cubic vertex containing three derivatives is the vertex discovered by Berends, Burgers and van Dam, which however leads to inconsistencies at second order in the deformation parameter. In dimensions 4$">n>4 and for a completely antisymmetric structure constant tensor, another covariant cubic vertex exists, which contains five derivatives and passes the consistency test where the previous vertex failed. © SISSA 2006.
