ABSTRACT This dissertation presents the results of a research on inerting fly ash from urban solid waste and its subsequent encapsulation in mortar matrixes. The inerting of this hazardous toxic waste, as well as its valorization as a by-product has been achieved. In this way, a new "raw material" is available through a simple process and the toxic and hazardous waste is eliminated, and consequently, conservation of alternative natural resources is strengthened. Chemical analysis of the ashes analyzed shows high concentrations of soluble chlorides, Zn and Pb. An inerting process of fly ash with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) has been developed which reduces 99% the content of chlorides and maintains pH at optimal values, so that the concentration of heavy metals in the leachate is minimum, due to its stabilization in the form of insoluble carbonates. Mortars with four different types of cements (CEM-I, CEM-II, CAC and CSA) have been developed by the addition of inertized fly ash in the form of carbonates, in the proportion of 10% in weight of the aggregates used. The samples tested include different proportions in the use of aggregates with different sizes (0/2 and 0/4), and in the cement/aggregate ratio (1/1 and 1/3). Physical/mechanical properties of these mortars have been studied through workability, dimensional stability, carbonation, porosity and mechanic strength tests. Leaching tests of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd ions are also being performed on monolithic samples of the best behavioral mortars. The content in leachated heavy metal ions is being analyzed through stripping voltammetry determination. Conclusions drawn are that the tested CAC and CSA cement mortars present much better behavior than those of CEM-I and CEM-II cement. The results are especially remarkable for the CAC cement mortars, improving reference mortars compression strengths in more than 48%, and also bending strengths in more than 67%. Leaching tests confirm that the encapsulation of Zn and Pb is achieved and leachate of both ions is mitigated within the mortar matrixes. For the above stated reasons, it might be concluded that mortars made with calcium aluminate cements or calcium sulfoaluminate with the incorporation of treated fly ash, may be perfectly valid for uses in which a fast-curing product, with high initial strength and drying shrinkage compensation with a high dimensional stability is required. Based on this, the material could be used as repair mortar for structures, roads and industrial pavements requiring high performance, such as: industrial floorings, landing tracks, parking lots, etc. Alternatively, it could also be used in the manufacture of prefabricated elements without structural reinforcement, given its high bending strength.

ABSTRACT The synthesis of sub-micron photoluminescent particles has been widely studied during the past decade because of the promising industrial applications of these materials. A large number of matrices has been developed, being SrAl2O4 host doped with europium (Eu2+) and dysprosium (Dy3+) the most extensively studied, because of its better stability and long-lasting luminescence. These functional inorganic materials have a wide field of application in persistent luminous paints, inks and ceramics. Large attention has been paid to the development of an efficient method of preparation of SrAl2O4 powders, including solgel method, hydrothermal synthesis, laser synthesis, combustion synthesis and solid state reaction. Many of these techniques are not compatible with large-scale production and with the principles of sustainability. Moreover, industrial processing of highly crystalline powders usually requires high synthesis temperatures, typically between 1300 a 1900oC, with long processing times, especially for solid state reaction. As a result, the average particle size is typically within the 20-100 μm range. This large particle size is limiting for current applications that demand sub-micron particles. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop new approaches to overcome these limitations. Within this frame, it is necessary to undertake the following purposes: To study the parameters that govern the particle size reduction by milling and their relation with the photoluminescence properties. To obtain SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy by combustion synthesis, assessing the effect of the temperature and the amount of fuel (urea) to synthesize highly crystalline particles minimizing the presence of secondary phases. To develop new synthesis methods to obtain SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy powders. The molten salt synthesis has been proposed. As the method is a novel route, the reaction mechanism should be determine as a function of the salt mixture, the ratio of the salt, the kind of Al2O3 and their particle size and the temperature and the atmosphere of the thermal treatment. To improve the efficiency of the synthesis process to obtain SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy powders with optimal final properties and easily scalable. On the basis of decreasing the particle size by using commercial product SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ as raw material, the effects of different milling methods have been evaluated. Wet milling can significantly alter the structure of the material through hydrolysis reaction even in ethanol media. For overcoming the drawbacks of wet milling, a dry milling-based processes are studied. High energy dry milling process allows a great reduction of the particle size, however milling times above 10 min produce agglomeration and accelerates the decrease of the photoluminescence feature. To solve these issues the low energy dry milling process proposed effectively reduces the particle size to d50=2.8 μm, and improves the homogeneity avoiding the amorphization in comparison with previous methods. The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope characterization allow to infer that the large variations in PL (Photoluminescence) values by high energy milling process are a consequence mainly of the crystallite size reduction. The lesser variation in PL values by low energy milling proces is related to the coherent crystalline domain preservation and the unnoticeable amorphization. These results corroborate that the photoluminescence intensity and the persistent luminescence of the SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ powders depend extrinsically on the morphology of the particles such as particle size, grain size, surface damage and intrinsically on the crystallinity (crystallite size); being the intrinsically effects the ones that have a significant influence on the photoluminescent response. By combustion method, nanostructured SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ sheets with a thickness ≤1 μm have been obtained. The amount of fuel (urea) in the reaction has an important influence on the phase composition; urea contents larger than the stoichiometric one require the presence of an oxidant agent such as HNO3 to complete the reaction. A higher amount of urea (excess of urea: denoted m>1, being m=1 the stoichiometric composition) including an oxidizing agent produces SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ particles with persistent luminescence due to the effective chelation of the cations and the creation of suitable atmospheric conditions to reduce the Eu3+ to Eu2+. Therefore, optimizing the synthesis parameters in combustion synthesis by using a higher amount of urea and an internal oxidizing agent allows to complete the reaction. The amount of secondary phases can be significantly reduced and the photoluminescence response can be enhanced. This situation is attributed to a higher energy that improves the crystallinity of the powders. The powders obtained have a particle size c.a. 5-25 μm with a thickness ≤1 μm and require relatively low ignition temperatures (600oC). It is possible to reduce the particle size by a low energy dry milling but this process implies the decrease of the photoluminescent response. However, a post-thermal treatment in a reducing atmosphere allows the improvement of the properties due to the increment of crystallinity and the reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+. Compared with the powder resulted from solid state method (commercial reference: average particle size, 20 μm and heterogeneous particle size distribution) the emission intensity of the powder prepared by combustion method achieve the values between 35% to 21% of the reference powder intensity. Moreover, the initial intensity of the decay curve is 20% of the intensity of the reference powder. Taking in account these results, it is necessary to explore other methods to synthesize the powders For that reason, an original synthetic route has been developed in this study: the molten salt assisted process to obtain highly crystalline SrAl2O4 powders with nanometric sized crystallites. The molten salt was composed of a mixture of NaCl and KCl using a 0.5:0.5 molar ratio (eutectic mixture hereafter abbreviated as (NaCl-KCl)e). The main advantages of salt addition is the increase of the reaction rate, the significant reduction of the synthesis temperature and the duration of the thermal treatment in comparison with classic solid state method. The SrAl2O4 formation is promoted due to the high mobility of the Sr2+ cations in the liquid medium. Different kinds of Al2O3 have been employed to evaluate the role of the size and the nature of this precursor on the kinetics of reaction, on the morphology and the final properties of the product. The SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ powders have pseudo-spherical morphology and particle size ≤0.5 μm when a sub-micron Al2O3 ( 0.5 μm Al2O3, 0.1 μm Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3) has been used. This can be attributed to a higher reactivity in the system and the dominance of dissolution-precipitation mechanism. However, the use of larger alumina (6 μm Al2O3) modifies the reaction pathway leading to a different reaction evolution. More specifically, the growth of SrAl2O4 sub-micron particles on the surface of hexagonal platelets of 6μm Al2O3 is promoted. The particles retain the shape of the original Al2O3 and this formation process can be attributed to a «core-shell» mechanism. The particles obtained exhibit different photoluminescent response as a function of the final morphology of the powder. Therefore, through this study, it has been elucidated the reaction mechanisms of SrAl2O4 formation assisted by (NaCl-KCl)e that are governed by the diffusion of SrCO3 and the reactivity of the alumina particles. Optimizing the Al2O3/SrO ratio of the SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy powders synthesized with 6 μm Al2O3 as a precursor, the secondary phases and the concentration of dopant needed can be reduced keeping the photoluminescent response of the synthesized powder. Compared with the commercial reference powder, up to 90% of the emission intensity of the reference powder has been achieved for the powder prepared by molten salt method using 6μm Al2O3 as alumina precursor. Concerning the initial intensity of the decay curve, 60% of the initial intensity of the reference powder has been obtained. Additionally, it is necessary to take into account that SrAl2O4 has two polymorphs: monoclinic symmetry that is stable at temperatures below 650oC and hexagonal symmetry that is stable above this temperature. Monoclinic phase shows luminescent properties. However, there is no clear agreement on the emission of the hexagonal structure. By molten salt, it is possible to stabilize the hexagonal phase of SrAl2O4 employing an excess of Al2O3 (Al2O3/SrO: 2) and γ-Al2O3 as a precursor. The existence of nanometric crystalline domains with lower size (≤20 nm) allows the stabilization of the hexagonal phase. Moreover, it has been evidenced that the hexagonal polymorph exhibits photoluminescent response. To sum up, the design of nanostructured SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ materials allows to obtain different morphologies and as consequence different photoluminescent responses. The reduction of temperature, duration of the thermal treatment and the precursors materials needed imply the decrease of the economic cost of the material. Therefore, the viability, suitability and scalability of the synthesis strategy developed in this work to process SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ are demonstrated.

ABSTRACT Lime Roman mortars from the Iberian Peninsula has been analyzed in this reesearch. A group of samples were selected from some sites and all the samples come from industrial structures. All this samples show ceramic additives. From the start, the effort was centered in the pieces of pottery that were found in the mortars. The samples were treated and processed to develop a first phase of the research using macroscopy. With this technique, great results were achieved in the characterization of mortars, the microstratigraphy and the location of the ceramic pieces. While observing these pieces, it was seen that the fragments of pottery had a ring bordering the piece. The pieces with the bigger and more vivid rings were chosen and they were analyzed by a polarized light microscope. The mortars were characterized microscopically and it also showed that the rings were not a physical alteration or a visual defect. After some more tests, the rings were a chemical change associated with the hydraulicity of the mortar. The best samples were selected and mappings of their chemical elements were performed in order to know what could be happening in the interface between the ceramic matrix fragment and lime. With the results obtained it was found that there was a potential; both calcium accumulation within the ceramic grains and outside, just in the area of contact with the binder, forming spots longitudinally along the edge. These data were very useful for carrying out the next phase of study, which would meet promptly what was happening chemically in the area of contact. Another group of samples were taken, and this time focused on ceramic grains that met a statistical variables. Grains were chosen with two types of cooking as well as grains with different sizes and grains with ash additive in the matrix of lime, thinking that might be the most logical to be some sort of chemical change between the baked clay and lime array variables . Such variables were adapted to a multi-varial and geometric statistical system in order to synthesize the results and optimally display the data together, as mentioned several times in this work. After selecting the variables grains proceeded to perform a linear and spectral analysis SEM-EDX. This analysis led to determine that the chemical changes were graduals. These changes are summarized in an increase in the percentages of calcium inside the reaction rim of ceramics, from the edge to the outer ring. So percentage increasing is also observed at the interface of the ceramic matrix fragment with lime, confirming the results obtained by the mapping. Overall in all samples can be seen a shoulder in graphic calcium through the area of the ring reaction condition. The remaining percentages of magnesium, silicon and aluminum are usual. We have promptly confirmed that the increase of calcium is accentuated in samples where there is no ash and lime matrix. Cases for these grains suffer a greater increase than the rest. The second variable suffering more calcium is increased corresponding to good cooking grains with clay. Therefore, it appears that the variable size of the fragment is not critical. Therefore, considering the visual tests to the rings and their response to chemical results, we might think that increasing calcium inside the ceramic fragments was due to an injection of calcium inside clay in the run-up to the setting phase. It is at this point that would be the key to the chemical change that occurs at this interface, silica-calcium aluminate some authors have already investigated. This injection of calcium into the grain does not come alone, but generate a lime crust on the outside interface of ceramics, which we tested for mapping is real in our samples. The consequence of these results is the improvement of our understanding of historical hydraulic factor in building materials, such as mortar. For example, knowing that the incorporation of organic materials such as ash powder, may be detrimental to the injection of calcium inside the ceramic additives. Archaeologically speaking, it's very interesting to correlate different factories or structures located on a single site, or in the same regional area. Characterization studies and microstratigraphy not only provide new information to help restore mortars, but create the possibility of generating constructive patterns that serve as guide fossils to determinate the age of the structures. With regard to the results obtained in different archaeological sites it has seen a difference between mortars of pools or sinks with respect to industrial floors of undetermined use. The sample of the site of Las Arenas does not have any micro-stratigraphy, as if instead in the samples obtained in Rotonda de Mejorada, Val de la Viña and La Magdalena sites. In these settlements the structures are really similar, with different construction levels using lime mortars with aggregates and gravel in the inner layers, and ceramic aggregates as external additions. With regard to the grain size of the ceramic additions Val de la Viña and La Magdalena samples has several coincidences about the size of grains and distribution. Also, samples taken at La Magdalena, there is a difference between the MG1, MG2, MG3 and MG4 samples and the MG5 and MG6 samples, so the last corresponding to a mortar samples with larger ceramic fragments. The EMG1 and EMG2 structures, corresponding to a bucket and a pool of La Magdalena settlement, have similarities with regard to micro-stratigraphy and grain size. It has been determined that the function and manufacturing must be linked with a same chronocultural context.

A cold atomic cloud is a versatile object, because it offers many handles to control and tune its properties. This facilitates studies of its behavior in various circumstances, such as sample temperature, size and density, composition, dimensionality and coherence time. The range of possible experiments is constrained by the specifications of the atomic species used. In this thesis presents the work done in the experiment for laser cooling of strontium atoms, focusing on its stability, which should provide cold and ultracold samples for the study of collective effects in light scattering. From the initial apparatus, innumerous changes were performed. The vacuum system got improved and now reached lower ultra high vacuum due to the pre-baking done to its parts and adding a titanium-sublimation stage. The quadrupole trap were improved by the design and construction of a new pair of coils. The stability of the blue, green and red laser systems and the loss prevention of laser light were improved, giving rise to a robust apparatus. Another important point is the development of homemade devices to reduce the costs and to be used as a monitor of different parts of an cold atoms experiment. From this homemade devices, we could demonstrate a dramatic linewidth narrowing by injection lock of an low cost 461 nm diode laser and its application to our strontium experiment. In the end, this improved experimental apparatus made possible the study of a new scattering effect, the mirror assisted coherent back-scattering (mCBS).

Water and gas is a common by - product of the oil production process. Production may be compromised by the precipitation of inorganic salts in both the reservoir and producing well, through scale formation. This precipitation is likely the cause of the formation damage. High temperatures and h igh pressures (HTHP) may favor the precipitation of insoluble salts. The most common types of scale in oil fields are calcium carbonate and calcium sulphate, strontium and barium sulphate. New types of scale formation have attracted special attention such as zinc sulphide and lead. This precipitation may occur in the pores of reservoir rocks, in the production string and in equipment, causing obstructions and consequent production losses. In this study, the influence of well depth on incrustation compositio n was investigated to design removal treatments and assess the behavior of these deposits along the string, through the analysis of pressure and temperature. Scale residues were recovered from the inside of the production string of an oil and gas well duri ng the string removal operation. A total of 10 samples from different depths (15.4 m to 4061.5 m) were obtained. Initially a dissolution test was conducted in weak acid, similar to that used in removal operations with this type of scale formation. Majority composition was defined and confirmed by dissolution tests using X - Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X - Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques. Residues with distinct characteristics were observed in different proportion s, showing a tendency toward increased and/or decreased mass with depth. In the samples closest to the surface, typical sandstone residues were found, with calcium (45% Ca) as the metal of highest concentration. The obtained results indicate correlations o f the scale types studied with the depth and, consequently, with the thermodynamic conditions of pressure and temperature.

Alkali tantalates and niobates, including K(Ta / Nb)O3, Li(Ta / Nb)O3 and Na(Ta / Nb)O3, are a very promising ferroic family of lead-free compounds with perovskite-like structures. Their versatile properties make them potentially interesting for current and future application in microelectronics, photocatalysis, energy and biomedics. Among them potassium tantalate, KTaO3 (KTO), has been raising interest as an alternative for the well-known strontium titanate, SrTiO3 (STO). KTO is a perovskite oxide with a quantum paraelectric behaviour when electrically stimulated and a highly polarizable lattice, giving opportunity to tailor its properties via external or internal stimuli. However problems related with the fabrication of either bulk or 2D nanostructures makes KTO not yet a viable alternative to STO. Within this context and to contribute scientifically to the leverage tantalate based compounds applications, the main goals of this thesis are: i) to produce and characterise thin films of alkali tantalates by chemical solution deposition on rigid Si based substrates, at reduced temperatures to be compatible with Si technology, ii) to fulfil scientific knowledge gaps in these relevant functional materials related to their energetics and ii) to exploit alternative applications for alkali tantalates, as photocatalysis. In what concerns the synthesis attention was given to the understanding of the phase formation in potassium tantalate synthesized via distinct routes, to control the crystallization of desired perovskite structure and to avoid low temperature pyrochlore or K-deficient phases. The phase formation process in alkali tantalates is far from being deeply analysed, as in the case of Pb-containing perovskites, therefore the work was initially focused on the process-phase relationship to identify the driving forces responsible to regulate the synthesis. Comparison of phase formation paths in conventional solid-state reaction and sol-gel method was conducted. The structural analyses revealed that intermediate pyrochlore K2Ta2O6 structure is not formed at any stage of the reaction using conventional solid-state reaction. On the other hand in the solution based processes, as alkoxide-based route, the crystallization of the perovskite occurs through the intermediate pyrochlore phase; at low temperatures pyrochlore is dominant and it is transformed to perovskite at >800 °C. The kinetic analysis carried out by using Johnson-MehlAvrami-Kolmogorow model and quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that in sol-gel derived powders the crystallization occurs in two stages: i) at early stage of the reaction dominated by primary nucleation, the mechanism is phase-boundary controlled, and ii) at the second stage the low value of Avrami exponent, n ~ 0.3, does not follow any reported category, thus not permitting an easy identification of the mechanism. Then, in collaboration with Prof. Alexandra Navrotsky group from the University of California at Davis (USA), thermodynamic studies were conducted, using high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. The enthalpies of formation of three structures: pyrochlore, perovskite and tetragonal tungsten bronze K6Ta10.8O30 (TTB) were calculated. The enthalpies of formation from corresponding oxides, ∆Hfox, for KTaO3, KTa2.2O6 and K6Ta10.8O30 are -203.63 ± 2.84 kJ/mol, - 358.02 ± 3.74 kJ/mol, and -1252.34 ± 10.10 kJ/mol, respectively, whereas from elements, ∆Hfel, for KTaO3, KTa2.2O6 and K6Ta10.8O30 are -1408.96 ± 3.73 kJ/mol, -2790.82 ± 6.06 kJ/mol, and -13393.04 ± 31.15 kJ/mol, respectively. The possible decomposition reactions of K-deficient KTa2.2O6 pyrochlore to KTaO3 perovskite and Ta2O5 (reaction 1) or to TTB K6Ta10.8O30 and Ta2O5 (reaction 2) were proposed, and the enthalpies were calculated to be 308.79 ± 4.41 kJ/mol and 895.79 ± 8.64 kJ/mol for reaction 1 and reaction 2, respectively. The reactions are strongly endothermic, indicating that these decompositions are energetically unfavourable, since it is unlikely that any entropy term could override such a large positive enthalpy. The energetic studies prove that pyrochlore is energetically more stable phase than perovskite at low temperature. Thus, the local order of the amorphous precipitates drives the crystallization into the most favourable structure that is the pyrochlore one with similar local organization; the distance between nearest neighbours in the amorphous or short-range ordered phase is very close to that in pyrochlore. Taking into account the stoichiometric deviation in KTO system, the selection of the most appropriate fabrication / deposition technique in thin films technology is a key issue, especially concerning complex ferroelectric oxides. Chemical solution deposition has been widely reported as a processing method to growth KTO thin films, but classical alkoxide route allows to crystallize perovskite phase at temperatures >800 °C, while the temperature endurance of platinized Si wafers is ~700 °C. Therefore, alternative diol-based routes, with distinct potassium carboxylate precursors, was developed aiming to stabilize the precursor solution, to avoid using toxic solvents and to decrease the crystallization temperature of the perovskite phase. Studies on powders revealed that in the case of KTOac (solution based on potassium acetate), a mixture of perovskite and pyrochlore phases is detected at temperature as low as 450 °C, and gradual transformation into monophasic perovskite structure occurs as temperature increases up to 750 °C, however the desired monophasic KTaO3 perovskite phase is not achieved. In the case of KTOacac (solution with potassium acetylacetonate), a broad peak is detected at temperatures <650 °C, characteristic of amorphous structures, while at higher temperatures diffraction lines from pyrochlore and perovskite phases are visible and a monophasic perovskite KTaO3 is formed at >700 °C. Infrared analysis indicated that the differences are due to a strong deformation of the carbonate-based structures upon heating. A series of thin films of alkali tantalates were spin-coated onto Si-based substrates using diol-based routes. Interestingly, monophasic perovskite KTaO3 films deposited using KTOacac solution were obtained at temperature as low as 650 °C; films were annealed in rapid thermal furnace in oxygen atmosphere for 5 min with heating rate 30 °C/sec. Other compositions of the tantalum based system as LiTaO3 (LTO) and NaTaO3 (NTO), were successfully derived as well, onto Si substrates at 650 °C as well. The ferroelectric character of LTO at room temperature was proved. Some of dielectric properties of KTO could not be measured in parallel capacitor configuration due to either substrate-film or filmelectrode interfaces. Thus, further studies have to be conducted to overcome this issue. Application-oriented studies have also been conducted; two case studies: i) photocatalytic activity of alkali tantalates and niobates for decomposition of pollutant, and ii) bioactivity of alkali tantalate ferroelectric films as functional coatings for bone regeneration. Much attention has been recently paid to develop new type of photocatalytic materials, and tantalum and niobium oxide based compositions have demonstrated to be active photocatalysts for water splitting due to high potential of the conduction bands. Thus, various powders of alkali tantalates and niobates families were tested as catalysts for methylene blue degradation. Results showed promising activities for some of the tested compounds, and KNbO3 is the most active among them, reaching over 50 % degradation of the dye after 7 h under UVA exposure. However further modifications of powders can improve the performance. In the context of bone regeneration, it is important to have platforms that with appropriate stimuli can support the attachment and direct the growth, proliferation and differentiation of the cells. In lieu of this here we exploited an alternative strategy for bone implants or repairs, based on charged mediating signals for bone regeneration. This strategy includes coating metallic 316L-type stainless steel (316L-SST) substrates with charged, functionalized via electrical charging or UV-light irradiation, ferroelectric LiTaO3 layers. It was demonstrated that the formation of surface calcium phosphates and protein adsorption is considerably enhanced for 316L-SST functionalized ferroelectric coatings. Our approach can be viewed as a set of guidelines for the development of platforms electrically functionalized that can stimulate tissue regeneration promoting direct integration of the implant in the host tissue by bone ingrowth and, hence contributing ultimately to reduce implant failure.

The increased longevity of humans and the demand for a better quality of life have led to a continuous search for new implant materials. Scientific development coupled with a growing multidisciplinarity between materials science and life sciences has given rise to new approaches such as regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. The search for a material with mechanical properties close to those of human bone produced a new family of hybrid materials that take advantage of the synergy between inorganic silica (SiO4) domains, based on sol-gel bioactive glass compositions, and organic polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS ((CH3)2.SiO2)n, domains. Several studies have shown that hybrid materials based on the system PDMS-SiO2 constitute a promising group of biomaterials with several potential applications from bone tissue regeneration to brain tissue recovery, passing by bioactive coatings and drug delivery systems. The objective of the present work was to prepare hybrid materials for biomedical applications based on the PDMS-SiO2 system and to achieve a better understanding of the relationship among the sol-gel processing conditions, the chemical structures, the microstructure and the macroscopic properties. For that, different characterization techniques were used: Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, liquid and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, smallangle neutron scattering, surface area analysis by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Surface roughness and wettability were analyzed by 3D optical profilometry and by contact angle measurements respectively. Bioactivity was evaluated in vitro by immersion of the materials in Kokubos’s simulated body fluid and posterior surface analysis by different techniques as well as supernatant liquid analysis by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy. Biocompatibility was assessed using MG63 osteoblastic cells. PDMS-SiO2-CaO materials were first prepared using nitrate as a calcium source. To avoid the presence of nitrate residues in the final product due to its potential toxicity, a heat-treatment step (above 400 °C) is required. In order to enhance the thermal stability of the materials subjected to high temperatures titanium was added to the hybrid system, and a material containing calcium, with no traces of nitrate and the preservation of a significant amount of methyl groups was successfully obtained. The difficulty in eliminating all nitrates from bulk PDMS-SiO2-CaO samples obtained by sol-gel synthesis and subsequent heat-treatment created a new goal which was the search for alternative sources of calcium. New calcium sources were evaluated in order to substitute the nitrate and calcium acetate was chosen due to its good solubility in water. Preparation solgel protocols were tested and homogeneous monolithic samples were obtained. Besides their ability to improve the bioactivity, titanium and zirconium influence the structural and microstructural features of the SiO2-TiO2 and SiO2-ZrO2 binary systems, and also of the PDMS-TiO2 and PDMS-ZrO2 systems. Detailed studies with different sol-gel conditions allowed the understanding of the roles of titanium and zirconium as additives in the PDMS-SiO2 system. It was concluded that titanium and zirconium influence the kinetics of the sol-gel process due to their different alkoxide reactivity leading to hybrid xerogels with dissimilar characteristics and morphologies. Titanium isopropoxide, less reactive than zirconium propoxide, was chosen as source of titanium, used as an additive to the system PDMS-SiO2-CaO. Two different sol-gel preparation routes were followed, using the same base composition and calcium acetate as calcium source. Different microstructures with high hydrophobicit were obtained and both proved to be biocompatible after tested with MG63 osteoblastic cells. Finally, the role of strontium (typically known in bioglasses to promote bone formation and reduce bone resorption) was studied in the PDMS-SiO2-CaOTiO2 hybrid system. A biocompatible material, tested with MG63 osteoblastic cells, was obtained with the ability to release strontium within the values reported as suitable for bone tissue regeneration.
