Bio-based composites from stone groundwood applied to new product development

This paper deals with the product design, engineering, and material selection intended for the manufacturing of an eco-friendly chair. The final product is expected to combine design attributes with technical and legal feasibility with the implementation of new bio-based materials. Considering the industrial design, a range of objectives and trends were determined after setting the market requirements, and the final concept was proposed and modeled. The product geometry, production technology, and legal specifications were the input data for product engineering. The material selection was based on the technical requirements. Polypropylene (PP) composite materials based on coupled-fiberglass, sized-fiberglass, and coupled-stone ground wood reinforcements were prepared and characterized. Final formulations based on these PP composites are proposed and justified

Competitive flexibility in systems supplier companies in mechanical engineering industry

Systems suppliers are focal actors in mechanical engineering supply chains, in between general contractors and component suppliers. This research concentrates on the systems suppliers’ competitive flexibility, as a competitive advantage that the systems supplier gains from independence from the competitive forces of the market. The aim is to study the roles that power, dependence relations, social capital, and interorganizational learning have on the competitive flexibility. Research on this particular theme is scarce thus far. The research method applied here is the inductive multiple case study. Interviews from four case companies were used as main source of the qualitative data. The literature review presents previous literature on subcontracting, supply chain flexibility, supply chain relationships, social capital and interorganizational learning. The result of this study are seven propositions and consequently a model on the effects that the dominance of sales of few customers, power of competitors, significance of the manufactured system in the end product, professionalism in procurement and the significance of brand products in the business have on the competitive flexibility. These relationships are moderated by either social capital or interorganizational learning. The main results obtained from this study revolve around social capital and interorganizational learning, which have beneficial effects on systems suppliers’ competitive flexibility, by moderating the effects of other constructs of the model. Further research on this topic should include quantitative research to provide the extent to which the results can be reliably generalized. Also each construct of the model gives possible focus for more thorough research.

An Engineering Solution for using Coarse Meshes in the Simulation of Delamination with Cohesive Zone Models

This paper presents a methodology to determine the parameters used in the simulation of delamination in composite materials using decohesion finite elements. A closed-form expression is developed to define the stiffness of the cohesive layer. A novel procedure that allows the use of coarser meshes of decohesion elements in large-scale computations is proposed. The procedure ensures that the energy dissipated by the fracture process is correctly computed. It is shown that coarse-meshed models defined using the approach proposed here yield the same results as the models with finer meshes normally used in the simulation of fracture processes

Plan de seguridad y salud para el suministro y montaje del Parque Eólico Rancho Viejo en el T.M. de Medina-Sidonia (Cádiz)

No hace más de 3 años se podía leer en las revistas especializadas que España había pasado a ocupar el tercer puesto en el ranking mundial por potencia eólica instalada. La industria eólica española a su vez ha pasado a ocupar el tercer puesto en la fabricación e instalación de aerogeneradores, con una cuota de mercado del 13%, siendo así un sector con gran capacidad de exportación. Por otra parte, tras diez años de promulgación de la Ley 31/95, de 8 de noviembre, de Prevención de Riesgos Laborales, y después su desarrollo reglamentario, es un hecho incontestable que, pese a todo, y a los ingentes esfuerzos realizados por los distintos actores implicados en la prevención de riesgos laborales (Estado, Comunidades Autónomas, Agentes Sociales, Entidades especializadas, etcetera), existe un sector como el de la construcción que, constituyendo uno de los ejes del crecimiento económico de nuestro país, está sometido a unos riesgos especiales y continúa registrando una siniestralidad laboral muy notoria por sus cifras y gravedad. La legislación de prevención, los manuales sobre las distintas disciplinas preventivas, los libros especializados, los expertos... han abordado ya, con mayor o menor acierto, muchas de las cuestiones generales y específicas que afectan a la seguridad y salud: la evaluación de riesgos, las medidas higiénicas, los equipos de trabajo y equipos de protección individual, la planificación, la formación, los servicios de prevención , los sistemas de gestión de la prevención, las auditorías ... forman parte de los contenidos que se han ido creando en torno a este tema. No obstante, resulta de gran interés la elaboración de un estudio de Seguridad y Salud, en el que partiendo de un desarrollo técnico concreto, pero sobre todo integral, es decir, que comprenda todas las fases para el suministrp e instalación de aerogeneradores para un parque eólico, vayamos desgranando cada uno de los puntos desarrollados en su construcción. Entre las conclusiones más destacadas de este trabajo, se encuentra la definición de las condiciones relativas a la prevención de accidentes y enfermedades laborales durante la ejecución de los trabajos de suministro e instalación de un parque eólico y la gestión de su prevención, las características de las instalaciones preceptivas para higiene y bienestar de los trabajadores, así como directrices básicas mínimas, que deben reflejarse y desarrollarse en el Plan de Seguridad y Salud que las empresas contratistas deberán presentar para su aprobación por el director de obra, antes del comienzo de los trabajos, de forma que sea posible la disminución de accidentes laborales así como evitar las posibles sanciones administrativas y/o penales.

Teollisuuden suunnittelupalveluiden hankinta ja valintakriteerit sekä palvelutarjonnan suuntaaminen

Tavoitteena oli selvittää pohjoissuomalaisen teollisuuden suunnittelu- ja konsultointipalvelujen hankintaa ja valintaa ohjaavia kriteereitä. Kriteerien tunteminen antaa palveluntarjoajille paremmat lähtökohdat oman toiminnan ohjaamisessa. Samalla työssä tutkittiin palveluntarjoajien tietämystä asiakkaidensa hankintatoimen taustalla vaikuttavista seikoista. Työn tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää palvelun-tarjoajien, työn tilaajan ja teollisuuden asiakkaiden toiminnassa. Työ aloitettiin tutustumalla asiantuntijapalveluiden markkinoinnin ja hankinnan teoriaan. Teoriassa tutustuttiin myös teknisen suunnittelun- ja konsultoinnin toimi-alaan. Tämän jälkeen haastateltiin kymmenen teollisuuden asiakasyritystä ja viisi palveluntarjoajayritystä. Näiden haastatteluiden perusteella voitiin tarkentaa suunnittelu- ja konsultoinnin erikoispiirteitä ja asiantuntijapalveluiden markkinoinnin ja hankintatoimen teoriaa. Tulosten perusteella asiantuntijapalveluiden hankintatoimi on hyvin organisoitua isoimpien yritysten tai yksiköiden kohdalla. Pienempien yritysten resurssit, vuosittainen tarve ja kokemus ohjaavat hankintatoimintaa. Myös kriteerit ovat yrityksen kokoon nähden muuttuvat. Isommat hankkijat arvostavat henkilöstöä, heidän referenssejään ja osaamistaan. Pienemmät arvostavat edellisten lisäksi vastuunottoa, sitoutumista ja riskienhallintaa. Henkilökohtainen myyntityö nähtiin tärkeänä. Suunnittelutoimistojen tietämys hankintatoimesta ja valintakriteereistä oli vaihtelevaa, mutta pääasiassa keskinkertaista.

Introducing Continuous Integration for C and C++ Software Development Projects on Linux Platform

Software integration is a stage in a software development process to assemble separate components to produce a single product. It is important to manage the risks involved and being able to integrate smoothly, because software cannot be released without integrating it first. Furthermore, it has been shown that the integration and testing phase can make up 40 % of the overall project costs. These issues can be mitigated by using a software engineering practice called continuous integration. This thesis work presents how continuous integration is introduced to the author's employer organisation. This includes studying how the continuous integration process works and creating the technical basis to start using the process on future projects. The implemented system supports software written in C and C++ programming languages on Linux platform, but the general concepts can be applied to any programming language and platform by selecting the appropriate tools. The results demonstrate in detail what issues need to be solved when the process is acquired in a corporate environment. Additionally, they provide an implementation and process description suitable to the organisation. The results show that continuous integration can reduce the risks involved in a software process and increase the quality of the product as well.

Productivity, Technical eficiency and internationalisation of the Spanish chemical sector

relationship between productivity and international position of Spanish chemical firms in the period 2005-2011. The goal is to determine whether companies that follow and international strategy, either with exports or by investment in foreign countries obtain greater productivity growth than these that do not operate in global market. For this purpose a panel data set with microdata has been created. A preliminary analysis of the evolution of productivity growth in the sector is carried out. The measurement of Total Factor Productivity is performed. With the estimated TFP we analyze the differentials in productivity growth, comparing the effects of export and investment behavior with non-international firms.

Project owner’s and outside engineering consultant’s role in power plant implementation projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of co-operation between a project owner and an outside engineering consultant in combined heat and power plant implementation projects. Moreover, as another focal subject of the study was to familiarize the purchasing behavior of the energy producer and how an outside engineering consultant participated into different stages of the purchasing process. The study was carried out as a multiple case study including altogether six Finnish power plant implementation projects that had been taken into commercial use during 1995 – 2015. By adjusting the findings of empirical interview data and comparing those to the theoretical framework concerning, among others, Finnish energy production, engineering consulting businesses, delivery methods of construction project and finally the purchasing process, it can be concluded that especially in the power plant implementation projects in the past have a great influence to decisions made during the project. The role of the main engineering consultant is to act as an assistant, who helps to achieve the project goals successfully rather than an advisor who only knows how the project should be conducted. At least in these five project cases this was the case, meaning that the final decision power always remaining with project owner.

Resources and capabilities approach to online strategy – Multiple-case study of Finnish magazines' online services

Most Finnish periodical magazines have a website, often an online service. The objective of this thesis is to understand the magazines’ resources and capabilities and match them with online strategies’ goals and objectives. The thesis’ theoretical part focuses on explaining and classifying resources, capabilities, goals and objectives, and applying everything into Finnish magazine publishing context. In the empirical part, there is a comparative case study of four magazines. The findings indicate that with cooperating, advertising and community hosting capabilities magazines may utilize their human, brand, content and customer base resources. The resources can be further addressed to reach profitability, customer-centricity and brand congruency goals.

Kenttätietojen hyödyntäminen taajuusmuuttajan luotettavuuden suunnittelussa

Taajuusmuuttaja on yhä yleisempi laite perinteisten oikosulkumoottoreiden nopeuden säädössä, niin teollisuudessa kuin muilla käyttökohteissa. Ensimmäiset laitetyypit olivat mekaanisesti suurikokoisia ja vaativat laitteen tekniseltä tuelta ja kunnossapidolta hyvää teknistä perehtyneisyyttä laitteisiin. Teknologian kehittymisen myötä laitteiden teho/kokosuhde on pienentynyt ja tarjolla on useita eri sovelluskohteisiin suoraan soveltuvia taajuusmuuttajia varustettuna helppokäyttöisillä ja kaupallisilla käyttöliittymillä. Laitteen elinkaaren aikainen luotettavuusjohtaminen edellyttää valmistajalta varsinaisen laitesuunnittelun lisäksi tarkoituksenmukaisia testausmenetelmiä ja kokemusperäistä luotettavuustietoa myös asennetusta laitekannasta. Työssä on käyty taajuusmuuttajan suunnittelun kannalta läpi luotettavuuden käsitteistö sekä yleisimpiä luotettavuusmenetelmiä. Luotettavuusnäkökohtia verrataan asennetusta laitekannasta saatuihin kokemuksiin laitteen valmistajan ja tuotetuen kannalta. Työssä on esitetty luokittelun perusteita ja menetelmät, miten käytön aikana voidaan arvioida laitteen teknistä tilaa sekä huomioida se kunnossapidon suunnittelussa. Johtopäätöksenä huomataan, että asennuspaikka ja käyttösovellus määrittävät taajuusmuuttajan käytettävyyden. Kenttätietoja voidaan hyödyntää paikallisen kunnossapidon kannalta kunnossapidon ja investointien suunnittelussa. Toisaalta valmistajan tuotekehitys saa asennetuista laitteista kokemuksia seuraavan sukupolven tyypin suunnittelun perustaksi. Tekniikan voimakkaan kehittymisen seurauksena uusien taajuusmuuttajatyyppien valmistus kestää yhä lyhyemmän ajanjakson, jolloin asennetusta laitekannasta saatu kenttäkokemus on arvokasta tietoa laitevalmistajalle. Yhteenvetona valmistajan laiterekistereitä voidaan kehittää siten, että niihin on tallennettavissa laitekartoitusten perusteella kerättyä informaatiota, jota niin valmistajan myynti, tuotetuki kuin laitesuunnittelu voi omassa toiminnassaan hyödyntää.

Engineering of Business Critical Web Applications

Research focus of this thesis is to explore options for building systems for business critical web applications. Business criticality here includes requirements for data protection and system availability. The focus is on open source software. Goals are to identify robust technologies and engineering practices to implement such systems. Research methods include experiments made with sample systems built around chosen software packages that represent certain technologies. The main research focused on finding a good method for database data replication, a key functionality for high-availability, database-driven web applications. Research included also finding engineering best practices from books written by administrators of high traffic web applications. Experiment with database replication showed, that block level synchronous replication offered by DRBD replication software offered considerably more robust data protection and high-availability functionality compared to leading open source database product MySQL, and its built-in asynchronous replication. For master-master database setups, block level replication is more recommended way to build high-availability into the system. Based on thesis research, building high-availability web applications is possible using a combination of open source software and engineering best practices for data protection, availability planning and scaling.
