The dimeric compound [Pd(bzan)(mu-OOCCH3)](2) (1) (bzan=N-benzylideneaniline) reacts with KX, in methanol/acetone (2:1), affording the analogous dimeric pseudohalogen-bridged species [Pd(bzan)(mu-X)](2) [X=NCO(2), SCN(3), CN(4)]. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, NMR and thermogravimetric analysis. IR data for 2-4 showed bands typical of coordinated pseudohalogen ligands clearly indicating the occurrence of the exchange reaction. Their thermal behaviour was investigated and suggested that their stability is influenced by the bridging ligand. The thermal stability decreased in the order [Pd(bzan)(mu-CN)](2)>[Pd(bzan)(mu-SCN)](2)>[Pd(bzan)(mu-OOCCH3)](2)>[Pd(bzan)(mu-NCO)](2). X-ray results showed the formation of Pddegrees as final decomposition product.

A salt elimination reaction between [YCl3(THF)(3.5)] and 1 or 2 equiv. of Tl(Tp(Ms*)) [Tp(Ms*) = HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)2(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(-)] leads in both cases to single metathesis, giving a mixture of the mono-Tp(Ms*) complex [YCl3(Tp(Ms*))Tl] (1) and another complex, [YCl2(Tp(Ms* *))] (2) [Tp(Ms* *) = HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(2)(-)], that results from the transfer of a second mesityl group to the 5-position of the pyrazolyl ring. The solid-state structure of 1 shows a unique ate dimeric structure with the TV cations coordinated by two mu(2)- and two mu(3)-bridging Cl atoms as well as two eta(3)-mesityl ligands. The presence of tin in the network of silicate glasses produces changes in several of their physico-chemical properties. Glasses with the composition (mol%) 22Na(2)O (.) 8CaO (.) 70SiO(2) containing up to 5 wt% of SnO2 were analyzed under several experimental techniques. Dilatometric measurements showed an increase of the glass transition temperature with increasing tin content, while the average thermal expansion coefficient is reduced. Vickers microhardness, density, and refractive index also increase with the tin content. Diffuse reflectance spectra in the infrared (DRIFT) showed that the presence of tin, even at low concentrations, is responsible for some structural changes since there is an increase of the bridging oxygen concentration. The doped glasses present a brown color and optical absorption spectra measurements are interpreted as being due to precipitation of tin in the form of colloidal particles during cooling of the melted glass. In the Na+ <-> K+ ion exchange process the presence of tin in the glass network hinders the diffusion of these ions. The diffusion coefficients of those ions were calculated by the Boltzmann-Matano technique, after concentration profiles obtained by EDS measurements. All results obtained present evidences that Sn4+ cation acts as a glass network former. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermoreversible sol-gel transition is well-known in biological and organic polymeric systems but has not been reported for inorganic systems. In this paper we put in evidence a thermoreversible sol-gel transition for zirconyl chloride aqueous solutions modified by sulfuric acid in the ratio 3:1 Zr:SO4. The synthesis conditions are detailed and a variety of experimental techniques (turbidimetry, dynamic rheology, and EXAFS) have been employed for investigating the thermal reversibility and the chemical structure of this new material. Turbidimetric measurements performed for solutions containing different concentrations of precursor have evidenced that the sol-gel transformation temperature increases from 50 to 80 degrees C as the concentration of zirconyl chloride decreases from 0.22 to 0.018 mol L-1. A more detailed study has been done for the sample with [Zr] = 0.156 mol L-1, in which the sol-gel-sol transformation has been repeated several times by a cyclic variation of the temperature. The mechanical properties of this sample, evaluated by measuring the storage and the loss moduli, show a change from liquid like to viscoelastic to elastic behavior during the sol-gel transition and vice versa during the gel-sol one. In situ EXAFS measurements performed at the Zr K-edge show that no change of the local order around Zr occurs during the sol-gel-sol transition, in agreement with the concept of physical gel formation. We have proposed for the structure of the precursor an inner core made of hydroxyl and oxo groups bridging together zirconium atoms surrounded in surface by complexing sulfate ligands, the sulfate groups act as a protective layer, playing a key role in the linking propagation among primary particles during sol-gel-sol transition.

The sols produced by admixture of ZrOCl2 acidified solutions to hot H2SO4 aqueous solutions were studied to clarify the effects of Cl- and SO42- ions on the kinetic stability of nanoparticles and to obtain some new evidence concerning the mechanism of a thermoreversible sol-gel transition observed in this system. The study of suspensions prepared with different molar ratios R-S = [Zr]/[SO42-] and R-Cl = [Zr]/[Cl-] revealed domains of composition of formation of thermoreversible gels, thermostable sols, and powder precipitation. The effects of R-S and R-Cl on the structural features of nanoparticles and on the particle solution interface were systematically analyzed for samples of thermoreversible and thermostable sol domains. Small-angle X-ray scattering measurements revealed the presence of small fractal aggregates in all samples of thermoreversible domains, while compact packing aggregates of primary particles are present in the thermostable sol. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure and elemental chemical analysis revealed that irrespective of the nominal value of R-S and R-Cl all studied samples of the thermoreversible domain are constituted by a well-defined compound possessing an inner core made of hydroxyl and oxo groups bridging together zirconium atoms surrounded on the surface by complexing sulfate ligands. zeta potentials of powders extracted by freeze-drying from the thermoreversible gel revealed a point of surface charge inversion attributed to the specific adsorption of SO42- ion. Thermoreversible gel formation is rationalized by considering the effect of the specific adsorption on the electrical double-layer repulsion together with the temperature dependency of the physical chemical properties of ions in solution.

Many in vivo studies have stated that the response of the dentin/pulp complex does not depend on the dental material used as the liner or pulp-capping agent. However, several in vitro studies have reported the metabolic cytotoxic effects of resin components applied to fibroblast and odontoblast cell lines. The aim of this study was to evaluate the human pulp response following direct pulp capping with current bonding agents and calcium hydroxide (CH). Sound premolars scheduled for orthodontic extraction had their pulp tissue mechanically exposed. After hemorrhage control and total acid conditioning, the experimental bonding agents, including All Bond 2, Scotchbond MP-Plus, Clearfil Liner Bond 2, and Prime & Bond 2.1 were applied on the pulp exposure site. CH saline paste was used as the control pulp-capping agent. All cavities were restored with Z-100 resin composite according to the manufacturer's instructions. Following extractions, the teeth were processed for microscopic evaluation. In the short term, the bonding agents elicited a moderate inflammatory pulp response with associated dilated and congested blood vessels adjacent to the pulp exposure site. A mild inflammatory pulp response was observed when Clearfil Liner Bond 2 or CH was applied on the pulp exposures. With time, macrophages and giant cells engulfing globules and components of all experimental bonding agents displaced into the pulp space were seen. This chronic inflammatory response did not allow complete pulp repair, which interfered with the dentin bridge formation. Pulp exposures capped with CH exhibited an initial organization of elongated pulp cells underneath the coagulation necrosis. CH stimulated early pulp repair and dentin bridging that extended into the longest period. The bonding agents evaluated in the present study cannot be recommended for pulp therapy on sound human teeth.

Transparent glasses were synthesized in the NaPO3-BaF2 WO3 tertiary system and several structural characterizations were performed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) at the tungsten L-I and L-III absorption edges and by Raman spectroscopy. Special attention was paid to the coordination state of tungsten atoms in the vitreous network.XANES investigations showed that tungsten atoms are only six-fold coordinated (octahedra WO6) and that these glasses are free of tungstate tetrahedra (WO4).In addition, Raman spectroscopy allowed to identify a break in the linear phosphate chains as the amount of WO3 increases and the formation of P-O-W bonds in the vitreous network indicating the modifier behavior of WO6 octahedra in the glass network. Based on XANES data, we suggested a new attribution of several Raman absorption bands which allowed to identify the presence of W-O- and W=O terminal bonds and a progressive apparition of W-O-W bridging bonds for the most WO3 concentrated samples (&GE; 30% molar) due to the formation of WO6 clusters. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. The reactivity of [Pt(SbPh3)(3)], a compound of zerovalent platinum, exceptionally stable in air, is described. The compounds [{Pt(SbPh3)(3)}(2)N-2], containing bridging dinitrogen, [{Pt(SbPh3)(3)}(2)C-2], with an ethynediyl group also bridging, and [Pt(CO)(2)(SbPh3)(2)], were all obtained under ordinary pressure of nitrogen, acetylene or carbon monoxide, respectively, and are also described. Among the products of the reactions, the dimer [PtBr3(SbPh3)(2)](2) and the mixed complexes [PtL2(SbPh3)(2)] (L = PPh3, AsPh3) were also obtained. Some of these complexes are luminescent when excited by u.v. radiation.

The Raman, IR absorption and EXAFS spectra at the Ge K-edge and Pb LIII-edge of eight lead germanate glasses, with general formula xPbO(1-x)GeO2 with x = 0.20, 0.25, 0.33, 0.40, 0.50, 0.53, 0.56 and 0.60, have been measured. The occurrence of [GeO6] units besides [GeO4] could not be deduced unambiguously from the data. The vibrational and EXAFS data agree with a progressive depolymerization of the network. Starting from all Ge atoms linked to four bridging oxygens in GeO2 (x = 0), the number of tetrahedral units with one or two non-bridging oxygens increases with x. At low content, Pb2+ ions act as modifiers in the germanate structure, but to a lesser extent than an equivalent number of alkaline ions. © 1993.
