Twisted conjugacy classes in nilpotent groups

A group is said to have the R(infinity) property if every automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. We study the question whether G has the R(infinity) property when G is a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group. As a consequence, we show that for every positive integer n >= 5, there is a compact nilmanifold of dimension n on which every homeomorphism is isotopic to a fixed point free homeomorphism. As a by-product, we give a purely group theoretic proof that the free group on two generators has the R(infinity) property. The R(infinity) property for virtually abelian and for C-nilpotent groups are also discussed.

Coincidence properties for maps from the torus to the Klein bottle

The authors study the coincidence theory for pairs of maps from the Torus to the Klein bottle. Reidemeister classes and the Nielsen number are computed, and it is shown that any given pair of maps satisfies the Wecken property. The 1-parameter Wecken property is studied and a partial negative answer is derived. That is for all pairs of coincidence free maps a countable family of pairs of maps in the homotopy class is constructed such that no two members may be joined by a coincidence free homotopy.

The Borsuk-Ulam theorem for homotopy spherical space forms

In this work, we show for which odd-dimensional homotopy spherical space forms the Borsuk-Ulam theorem holds. These spaces are the quotient of a homotopy odd-dimensional sphere by a free action of a finite group. Also, the types of these spaces which admit a free involution are characterized. The case of even-dimensional homotopy spherical space forms is basically known.

Equivariant Nielsen root theory for G-maps

Let X be a compact Hausdorff space, Y be a connected topological manifold, f : X -> Y be a map between closed manifolds and a is an element of Y. The vanishing of the Nielsen root number N(f; a) implies that f is homotopic to a root free map h, i.e., h similar to f and h(-1) (a) = empty set. In the process laboratory of Metso minerals (Sala) AB, continuous tests have been made with a laboratory unit High-Rate thickener. The tests are made in order to compare three methods of thickening techniques of suspended solids. The three techniques are High-Rate thickening, conventional thickening and lamella thickening. The High-Rate and the conventional trials are based on a continuous method, while the lamella thickener is based on batch trials. Because the lamella thickener is based on batch trials and there were some optimization problems with the adding point of the flocculant at the continuous trials, it was not feasible to compare the lamella thickener with the other two thickener types. On the other hand, since the optimization problems were the same for the other two methods there was no problem comparing them. The result of the comparison between the High-Rate thickener and the conventional thickener, was, that the High-Rate thickener manages to work at a higher rise rate with a lower consumption of flocculant than the conventional thickener. Seeing to the unit area that is needed by each thickener it is apparent that the conventional thickener demands a higher unit area than the High-Rate thickener to achieve the same amount of solids in the underflow. It has also been showed that the High-Rate thickener demands a lesser quantity of flocculant at the same amount of suspended solids in the feed than the conventional thickener.

In theory the ICC-profile compensate for blue light that fluorescefrom the paper with the complementary color, yellow. The human eye apprehands this fluorescentlight as white.When categorizing a number of ink jet qualities some tests to indicate change of color in the final printwere made. Five qualities were chosen for further analyses, each with different white point. TheTC3.5CMYK target was prined on an ink jet printer and measured with different filters for the measurementequipment, GretagMacbeth Spectrolino. U- and UV-filters were used during the testings.From the measurement data ICC-profiles were made to make it possible to watch how the profiles compensatefor the blue change of color that appeared in the data. Although a distinct change of color intoblue were discernible in the measured data there is no evident proof that this cause a final print thatis more yellow. Other conclusions and results are to be read at the end of this composition.

Meanings of overweight In societal discourses overweight is defined as a growing individual and a social problem leading to sickness and disability, mental distress, increased use of health care and reduced economic productivity. A strong normative pressure is directed at the overweight but relatively few succeed in reducing their weight. Therefore, the overweight need to manage a double stigma; the overweight body per se and their inability to conform to norms about bodyweight. This article investigates how individuals present their overweight to their social environment. Empirical data was collected as part of an evaluation study of a keep-fit project directed at home-care staff. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 49 participants and 30 of them had either tried or were trying to reduce their weight. The analysis shows that the informants presented a divided self consisting of a biological body, with its own drives, and a mind that is aware of the body and its social meanings. They portrayed their lives as a battle between these two sides. Their presentations of the divided self can be analysed as a defence of their social selves. The overweight can account for the kilos by blaming the biological drives, which leaves the core of themselves – their minds – unblemished. They can express an intention to loose weight and thereby conform to norms about bodyweight. When they fail to loose weight, the responsibility can be attributed to the unruly body.

The exclusionary policies of 'us and them' in the IPA and psychoanalytic institutes

This article will explore the issues of otherness in the IPA and also consider the local institute level using the example of the British Psychoanalytic Society. According to the IPA it is 'The world's primary psychoanalytic accrediting and regulatory body, with 10,500 members in over forty-five countries. The IPA works in partnership with its Component Organizations to train, support and network psychoanalysts, developing clinical, educational and research programmes'. It is well-known that the history of psychoanalysis is replete with organizational schisms and primary issues of 'inclusion-exclusion'. Who is a real psychoanalyst? "That are the necessary acceptable professional 'standards'? 'While standards' should be derived from knowledge, they are often derived from power and are often really a mask for power-plays. The others' have included those from both outside and within the psychoanalytic movement. Outsiders include medicine and the universities, psychotherapists, other psychoanalysts and other disciplines. Deviationists ,.vithin the IPA include other schools vvithin the'broad church' of psychoanalysis or even just those who don't fit with the proclivities of those in power sometimes rationalized into issues of standards

A longitudinal study to explain stratiges to change weight and muscles among normal weight and overweight children

Previous research has indicated that both boys and girls strive for a slim body, with boys having an additional focus on a muscular body build. The current study was designed to evaluate the utility of a biopsychosocial model to explain body image and body change strategies among children. The study evaluated changes over time in body image and strategies to lose weight and increase muscles among 132 normal weight and 67 overweight boys (mean age=9.23 years) and 158 normal weight and 55 overweight girls (mean age=9.33 years). The predictive role of BMI, positive and negative affect, self-esteem and perceived sociocultural pressures to lose weight or increase muscle on body image and body change strategies over a 16 month period was evaluated. All participants completed the questionnaire on both occasions. The results demonstrated that both overweight boys and girls were more likely to be dissatisfied with their weight, place more importance on their weight, engage in more strategies to lose weight as well as perceive more pressure to lose weight. Overweight boys and girls were also more likely to report lower levels of self-esteem and positive affect, and higher levels of negative affect, and reported a reduction in their self-esteem over time. Regression analyses demonstrated that among overweight boys, low self-esteem and high levels of perceived pressure to lose weight predicted weight dissatisfaction; for overweight girls, weight dissatisfaction was also predicted by low levels of self-esteem. The implication of these findings in terms of factors contributing to the adoption of health risk behaviors among children is discussed.

A historical review of the nurse practitioner role in Australia

Internationally, the nurse practitioner role has been shown to be cost-effective, safe, and instrumental in improving patient outcomes. The nurse practitioner role in Australia is in its infancy. Major stakeholders such as the nurses' boards and state departments of health throughout Australia were contacted to identify major policies and discussion papers. Database searches were conducted in CINAHL and EBSCOhost. Disparity between states exists in all facets of the nurse practitioner role, especially in definition of the role, scope of practice, educational qualifications, and specialized functions. Access to Medicare funding is unobtainable, resulting in inequity of access to health services for disadvantaged communities. The State Nurse Practitioner Taskforce Reports highlight the disparity between the role of nurse practitioner in each State of Australia and has led to fragmentation of the role at a national level. There is a need for consistency, which could be achieved if it were coordinated by a national nursing body with a voice in national health policy development and implementation

IES 4 - ethics education revisited

In 2003, the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) issued a set of International Education Standards (IES). IES 4 Professional Values, Ethics and Attitudes aims to equip candidates for membership of an IFAC member body with the appropriate professional values, ethics and attitudes to function as professional accountants. This paper explores the implications of IES 4 and analyses some of the challenges arising from an international professional accounting body prescribing ethics education. It concludes with an overview of considerations to be addressed to ensure that the implementation of IES 4 is successful.

Copper/zinc superoxide dismutase is phosphorylated and modulated specifically by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor in myeloid cells.

Using two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D SDS-PAGE) of 32P-labeled cytosolic and membrane extracts, we identified a 21.5 kDa phosphoprotein with an isoelectric point of 6.0 in NFS-60 cells that was phosphorylated maximally at 15 min by treatment with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) but not with interlevkin-3 (IL-3) or colony-stimulating factor-1 (macrophage-colony stimulating factor (CSF-1 (M-CSF)). The phosphorylation of this protein, designated 21.5/6.0, was unaffected by a series of antiproliferative agents [32]. These findings suggested that the 21.5/6.0 phosphoprotein may be involved in specific G-CSF-mediated biological responses such as activation and/or differentiation. We sought to characterize this 21.5/6.0 by a novel combination of 2-D SDS-PAGE and hydroxyapatite (HTP)-chromatography. Amino acid sequence determination of 21.5/6.0 revealed it to share a high level of homology with copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), indicating that a Cu/Zn-SOD is phosphorylated following treatment with G-CSF. This is the first report of the phosphorylation and possible involvement of Cu/Zn-SOD protein in granulocyte activation/differentiation events. In addition, Cu/Zn-SOD levels and activity were diminished by G-CSF but not IL-3 treatment. This new protocol combining 2-D SDS-PAGE and HTP-chromatography allows the characterization of low abundance phosphoproteins involved in the cellular responses to G-CSF and presumably to other cytokines/growth factors.

Anomalies in the oversight of Australian auditors

This commentary identifies and comments on anomalies in the oversight of Australian auditors and audit firms. Regulatory and professional oversight and inspection of Australian auditors and audit firms arise from a number of sources, highlighting its multi-faceted nature. This makes it impossible to identify a single body with ultimate responsibility for auditor oversight. Three recent Australian reviews commissioned by the Financial Reporting Council, together with an evaluation of the roles of the various regulatory and professional bodies, are used in this commentary as a platform from which to identify a number of significant anomalies in oversight processes. Major anomalies highlighted arise from the overlapping nature of the duties and functions of the various bodies and the variation in oversight across different categories of audit service providers. Policymakers should closely examine the issues raised in the paper if auditor oversight is to be undertaken in an effective and efficient manner.

The padding scheme for RSA signatures

The RSA scheme is used to sign messages; however, in order to avoid forgeries, a message can be padded with a fixed string of data P. De Jonge and Chaum showed in 1985 that forgeries can be constructed if the size of P (measured in bytes) is less than the size of N/3, where N is the RSA modulus. Girault and Misarsky then showed in 1997 that forgeries can be constructed if the size of P is less than the size of N/2. In 2001, Brier, Clavier, Coron and Naccache showed that forgeries can still be constructed when the size of P is less than two thirds the size of N. In this paper, we demonstrate that this padding scheme is always insecure; however, the complexity of actually finding a forgery is O(N). We then focus specifically on the next unsettled case, where P is less than 3/4 the size of N and show that finding a forgery is equivalent to solving a set of diophantine equations. While we are not able to solve these equations, this work may lead to a break-through by means of algebraic number theory techniques.

The developmental stress hypothesis: A special case of the evolution of condition-dependent sexual traits

The idea that sexually selected traits might be condition dependent is far from novel (Zahavi 1975); however, the developmental stress hypothesis was proposed as a special case because of a highly plausible mechanism: the development of the neural circuits controlling song output coincides with a period of time during which developing birds are likely to be susceptible to stress. The elegant aspect of the hypothesis is that the mechanism is defined and effects can be readily tested (Nowicki et al. 1998; Buchanan et al. 2003). Compared with more general hypotheses about the evolution of condition-dependent sexual traits (Buchanan 2000), the second particularly interesting aspect of the developmental stress hypothesis is that, in some species, individuals may suffer historical markers of stress. This is because in species with a fixed period for neural growth and song learning, there is no possibility for compensation in later life for stress experienced during early development. Females using such a marker of stress may benefit by obtaining a partner whose other cognitive functions have not been impaired by stress.
