The global financial crisis has had innumerate outcomes around the globe. Whilst most of these are generally perceived to be negative, there are outcomes which could be considered positive for society. One such outcome is the spotlight that the financial crisis has shone on corruption within organisations and in particular, the role that destructive leaders play in the promotion of negative behaviours within organisations. This interest in identifying so-called ‘dark-side’ traits in leaders is a positive step both academically and practically. Academically, there is a limited research examining individuals with ‘dark-traits’ within organisations (Mahmut, Homewood & Stevenson, 2008). Practically, most leader derailment can be attributed to ‘dark-side’ traits and leaders with such traits are implicated in a host of issues for organisations including poor staff morale and satisfaction, bullying, poor levels of productivity, high staff turnover, unethical behaviour and even white collar crime (e.g. Boddy,2010; 2011; Lesha & Lesha, 2012; O’Boyle, Forsyth, Banks & McDaniel, 2012; Sanecka, 2013). This paper focuses on one of the ‘dark-side’ traits; psychopathy. Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterised by guiltlessness, incapacity to experience love, impulsivity, shallow emotions, superficial charm and an inability to learn from experience (Cleckley, 1941, 1982). Research has found that individuals with high levels of psychopathy can be found working within organisations and experiencing some degree of career success (e.g. Babiak, Neumann & Hare, 2010; Board & Fritzon, 2005; Boddy, 2010; Lilienfeld, Latzman, Watts, Smith & Dutton, 2014). These individuals are theoretically thought to be attracted to careers which offer power, status and monetary rewards. In particular, the finance industry has been suggested as an ideal work place for the organisational psychopath. Some authors go as far as attribute organisational psychopaths a key role in the financial crisis (Boddy, 2011). However, little research has been conducted to explore whether levels of psychopathy in employees differ across industries and what careers might be most attractive to individuals with high levels of psychopathy. This paper presents the results of a large scale survey of 265 alumni of universities in the Central England region of the UK. The survey was conducted to assess the link between levels of three factors of psychopathy (Egotism, Callousness and Antisocialism) with occupation as defined by Holland’s RIASEC model. Participants completed Brinkley, Diamond, Magaletta & Heigel’s (2008) revision of Levenson’s Self-Report Psychopathy Scale and responded to questions regarding their current occupation. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess whether levels of Egotism, Callousness and Antisocialism were predictive of occupation. The results showed that when compared to individuals who occupy job roles within the Social sector of Holland’s model, individuals with higher levels of psychopathy were more likely to be employed within Realistic, Investigative, Enterprising and Conventional roles. When comparing Social and Realistic roles, more Egotistical individuals were likely to be employed within Realistic roles. When comparing those employed in Social roles to Investigative, Enterprising and Conventional roles, individuals with higher levels of Antisocialism were more likely to be employed within the latter three occupations than within Social roles. This suggests that individuals with psychopathy do gravitate towards certain career paths. Social roles where job incumbents are required to be caring and interact with others to a large extent appear to be unattractive to individuals with high levels of psychopathy. Social roles are also associated with lower monetary rewards and are generally less prestigious (Henley, 2001). These individuals instead seek out occupations where there are higher levels of risk, power and reward. Roles in the Realistic category include those which include high levels of risk e.g. fighter pilot, fireman etc., (Cohen, Meir, Segal & Amar, 2003). Investigative careers hold the highest level of prestige and ranking. Enterprising roles include management positions where power is wielded over subordinates and sales roles, where customers can be manipulated (ACT, 2009). Conventional roles include those within the finance industry, which include some of the most financially lucrative positive available (Babiak & Hare, 2006). The above suggests that individuals with higher levels of psychopathy may be seeking to satisfy their self-centred natures by selecting careers which provide them with high levels of reward in one way or another. Alternatively, these individuals may select roles where their traits can be accepted. The importance of Antisocialism in predicting occupation may be testament to the importance of finding a career which ‘fits’ such traits. Antisocialism is generally associated with negative outcomes in the workplace (Ettner, MacLean & French, 2010). Therefore, finding environments tolerant of antisocial tendencies may be a priority for individuals with high levels of these traits. The results suggest that Enterprising, Investigative and Conventional work environments may be tolerant of Antisocialism in employees and Realistic environments tolerant of Egotism. Academically, the results show that there is value in studying ‘dark-side’ characteristics in organisations. Individuals with higher levels of psychopathic traits, do not appear to randomly enter employment. Instead, they appear to gravitate to careers which meet their needs and/or tolerate their traits. It is important to further explore what industries and positions are particularly attractive to individuals with higher levels of psychopathy and what makes them attractive to these individuals. Such knowledge is important for practitioners to be able to advise organisations as to the likely level of risk they face of employing organisational psychopaths and to enable organisations which are particularly attractive to highly psychopathic employees to design selection systems which detect undesirable traits in candidates. Furthermore, organisations can examine their culture to assess whether traits such as antisocialism are tolerated (or even rewarded) and what the implications of this are.

This thesis examines the impact on child and adolescent psychotherapists within CAMHS of the introduction of routine outcome measures (ROMs) associated with the Children and Young People’s Improving access to Psychological Therapies programme (CYP-IAPT). All CAMHS therapists working within a particular NHS mental health Trust1 were required to trial CYP-IAPT ROMs as part of their everyday clinical practice from October 2013-September 2014. During this period considerable freedom was allowed as to which of the measures each therapist used and at what frequency. In order to assess the impact of CYP-IAPT ROMs on child psychotherapy, I conducted semi-structured interviews with eight psychotherapists within a particular CAMHS partnership within one NHS Trust. Each statement was coded and grouped according to whether it related to initial (generic) assessment, goal setting / monitoring, monitoring on-going progress, therapeutic alliance, or to issues concerning how data might be used or interpreted by managers and commissioners. Analysis of interviews revealed greatest concern about session-by session ROMs, as these are felt to impact most significantly on psychotherapy; therapists felt that session-by-session ROMs do not take account of negative transference relationships, they are overly repetitive and used to reward / punish the therapist. Measures used at assessment and review were viewed as most compatible with psychotherapy, although often experienced as excessively time consuming. The Goal Based Outcome Measure was generally experienced as compatible with psychotherapy so long as goals are formed collaboratively between therapist and young person. There was considerable anxiety about how data may be (mis)used and (mis)interpreted by managers and commissioners, for example to end treatment prematurely, trigger change of therapist in the face of negative ROMs data, or to damage psychotherapy. Use of ROMs for short term and generic work was experienced as less intrusive and contentious.

Conventional taught learning practices often experience difficulties in keeping students motivated and engaged. Video games, however, are very successful at sustaining high levels of motivation and engagement through a set of tasks for hours without apparent loss of focus. In addition, gamers solve complex problems within a gaming environment without feeling fatigue or frustration, as they would typically do with a comparable learning task. Based on this notion, the academic community is keen on exploring methods that can deliver deep learner engagement and has shown increased interest in adopting gamification – the integration of gaming elements, mechanics, and frameworks into non-game situations and scenarios – as a means to increase student engagement and improve information retention. Its effectiveness when applied to education has been debatable though, as attempts have generally been restricted to one-dimensional approaches such as transposing a trivial reward system onto existing teaching materials and/or assessments. Nevertheless, a gamified, multi-dimensional, problem-based learning approach can yield improved results even when applied to a very complex and traditionally dry task like the teaching of computer programming, as shown in this paper. The presented quasi-experimental study used a combination of instructor feedback, real time sequence of scored quizzes, and live coding to deliver a fully interactive learning experience. More specifically, the “Kahoot!” Classroom Response System (CRS), the classroom version of the TV game show “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”, and Codecademy’s interactive platform formed the basis for a learning model which was applied to an entry-level Python programming course. Students were thus allowed to experience multiple interlocking methods similar to those commonly found in a top quality game experience. To assess gamification’s impact on learning, empirical data from the gamified group were compared to those from a control group who was taught through a traditional learning approach, similar to the one which had been used during previous cohorts. Despite this being a relatively small-scale study, the results and findings for a number of key metrics, including attendance, downloading of course material, and final grades, were encouraging and proved that the gamified approach was motivating and enriching for both students and instructors.

Ethanol, classified as a drug, affects the central nervous system, and its consumption has been linked to the development of several behaviours including tolerance and dependence. Alcohol tolerance is defined as the need for higher doses of alcohol to induce the same changes observed in the initial exposure or where repetitive exposures of the same alcohol dose induce a lower response. Ethanol has been shown to interact with numerous targets and ultimately influence both short and long term adaptation at the cellular and molecular level in brain [1]. These adaptation processes are likely to involve signalling molecules: our work has focussed on G proteins gene expression. Using both wild type and several mutant fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as a model for behaviour and molecular studies, we observed significant increases in sedation time (ST50) in response to alcohol (P<0.001) Fig.A. We also observed a consistent and significant decrease of Gq protein mRNA expression in Drosophila dUNC and DopR2 mutants chronically exposed to alcohol (*P<0.05). Fig B. Method: Six male flies were observed in drosophila polystyrene 25 x 95mm transparent vial in between cotton plugs. To the top plug, 500uL of 100% ethanol was added. Time till 50% of the flies were sedated was recorded on each day following the schedule. Fig. C (n=4-6). Previous research has highlighted the importance of positive physical activity (PA) behaviors during childhood to promote sustained active lifestyles throughout the lifespan (Telama et al. 2005; 2014). It is in this context that the role of schools and teachers in facilitating PA education is promoted. Research suggests that teachers play an important role in the attitudes of children towards PA (Figley 1985) and schools may be an efficient vehicle for PA provision and promotion (McGinnis, Kanner and DeGraw, 1991; Wechsler, Deveraux, Davis and Collins, 2000). Yet despite consensus that schools represent an ideal setting from which to ‘reach’ young people (Department of Health and Human Services, UK, 2012) there remains conceptual (e.g. multi-component intervention) and methodological (e.g. duration, intensity, family involvement) ambiguity regarding the mechanisms of change claimed by PA intervention programmes. This may, in part, contribute to research findings that suggest that PA interventions have had limited impact on children’s overall activity levels and thereby limited impact in reducing children’s metabolic health (Metcalf, Henley & Wilkin, 2012). A marked criticism of the health promotion field has been the focus on behavioural change while failing to acknowledge the impact of context in influencing health outcomes (Golden & Earp, 2011). For years, the trans-theoretical model of behaviour change has been ‘the dominant model for health behaviour change’ (Armitage, 2009); this model focusses primarily on the individual and the psychology of the change process. Arguably, this model is limited by the individual’s decision-making ability and degree of self-efficacy in order to achieve sustained behavioural change and does not take account of external factors that may hinder their ability to realise change. Similar to the trans-theoretical model, socio-ecological models identify the individual at the focal point of change but also emphasises the importance of connecting multiple impacting variables, in particular, the connections between the social environment, the physical environment and public policy in facilitating behavioural change (REF). In this research, a social-ecological framework was used to connect the ways a PA intervention programme had an impact (or not) on participants, and to make explicit the foundational features of the programme that facilitated positive change. In this study, we examined the evaluation of a multi-agency approach to a PA intervention programme which aimed to increase physical activity, and awareness of the importance of physical activity to key stage 2 (age 7-12) pupils in three UK primary schools. The agencies involved were the local health authority, a community based charitable organisation, a local health administrative agency, and the city school district. In examining the impact of the intervention, we adopted a process evaluation model in order to better understand the mechanisms and context that facilitated change. Therefore, the aim of this evaluation was to describe the provision, process and impact of the intervention by 1) assessing changes in physical activity levels 2) assessing changes in the student’s attitudes towards physical activity, 3) examining student’s perceptions of the child size fitness equipment in school and their likelihood of using the equipment outside of school and 4) exploring staff perceptions, specifically the challenges and benefits, of facilitating equipment based exercise sessions in the school environment. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Evaluation of the intervention was designed as a matched-control study and was undertaken over a seven-month period. The school-based intervention involved 3 intervention schools (n =436; 224 boys) and one control school (n=123; 70 boys) in a low socioeconomic and multicultural urban setting. The PA intervention was separated into two phases: a motivation DVD and 10 days of circuit based exercise sessions (Phase 1) followed by a maintenance phase (Phase 2) that incorporated a PA reward program and the use of specialist kid’s gym equipment located at each school for a period of 4 wk. Outcome measures were measured at baseline (January) and endpoint (July; end of academic school year) using reliable and valid self-report measures. The children’s attitudes towards PA were assessed using the Children’s Attitudes towards Physical Activity (CATPA) questionnaire. The Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C), a 7-day recall questionnaire, was used to assess PA levels over a school week. A standardised test battery (Fitnessgram®) was used to assess cardiovascular fitness, body composition, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. After the 4 wk period, similar kid’s equipment was available for general access at local community facilities. The control school did not receive any of the interventions. All physical fitness tests and PA questionnaires were administered and collected prior to the start of the intervention (January) and following the intervention period (July) by an independent evaluation team. Evaluation testing took place at the individual schools over 2-3 consecutive days (depending on the number of children to be tested at the school). Staff (n=19) and student perceptions (n = 436) of the child sized fitness equipment were assessed via questionnaires post-intervention. Students completed a questionnaire to assess enjoyment, usage, ease of use and equipment assess and usage in the community. A questionnaire assessed staff perceptions on the delivery of the exercise sessions, classroom engagement and student perceptions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Findings showed that both the intervention (16.4%) and control groups increased their PAQ-C score by post-intervention (p < 0.05); with the intervention (17.8%) and control (21.3%) boys showing the greatest increase in physical activity levels. At post-intervention, there was a 5.5% decline in the intervention girls’ attitudes toward PA in the aesthetic subdomains (p = 0.009); whereas the control boys had an increase in positive attitudes in the health domain (p = 0.003). No significant differences in attitudes towards physical activity were observed in any other domain for either group at post-intervention (p > 0.05). The results of the equipment questionnaire, 96% of the children stated they enjoyed using the equipment and would like to use the equipment again in the future; however at post-intervention only 27% reported using the equipment outside of school in the last 7 days. Students identified the ski walker (34%) and cycle (32%) as their favorite pieces of equipment; with the single joint exercises such as leg extension and bicep/tricep machine (<3%) as their least favorite. Key themes from staff were that the equipment sessions were enjoyable, a novel activity, children felt very grown-up, and the activity was linked to a real fitness experience. They also expressed the need for more support to deliver the sessions and more time required for each session. Findings from this study suggest that a more integrated approach within the various agencies is required, particularly more support to increase teachers pedagogical content knowledge in physical activity instruction which is age appropriate. Future recommendations for successful implementation include sufficient time period for all students to access and engage with the equipment; increased access and marketing of facilities to parents within the local community, and professional teacher support strategies to facilitate the exercise sessions.

Contexte : Les effets cumulés des contraintes psychosociales du modèle déséquilibre efforts-reconnaissance (DER) sur la santé mentale sont peu connus. Aussi, peu d’études ont évalué les effets du DER sur des indicateurs objectifs de problèmes de santé mentale (PSM). Enfin, aucune étude prospective antérieure n’a évalué l’effet combiné des contraintes psychosociales du DER et du modèle demande-latitude (DL) et sur les PSM médicalement certifiés. La présente thèse vise à combler ces limites. Objectifs : 1) Mesurer l’effet de l’exposition cumulée au déséquilibre efforts-reconnaissance sur la prévalence de la détresse psychologique sur une période de cinq ans; 2) Mesurer l’effet du déséquilibre efforts-reconnaissance sur l’incidence des absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM sur une période de cinq ans; 3) Évaluer l’effet indépendant et l’effet combiné des contraintes psychosociales des modèles Demande-Latitude et Déséquilibre Efforts-Reconnaissance sur l’incidence des absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM sur une période de cinq ans. Méthodes : La cohorte était constituée de plus de 2000 hommes et femmes occupant des emplois de cols blancs. La collecte des données a été réalisée à trois reprises avec une moyenne de suivi de cinq ans. À chaque temps, les contraintes psychosociales et la détresse psychologique ont été mesurées à l’aide d’instruments validés. Les absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM ont été récoltées à partir des fichiers administratifs des employeurs. Les PSM ont été modélisés à l’aide des régressions log-binomiale et de Cox. Les analyses ont été réalisées séparément chez les hommes et les femmes, en ajustant pour les principaux facteurs de confusion. Résultats : Chez les hommes et les femmes, une exposition chronique au DER sur trois ans était associée à une prévalence plus élevée de la détresse psychologique. Les effets observés à trois ans ont persisté à cinq ans chez les hommes (Rapport de prévalence (RP)=1,91 (1,20–3,04)) et les femmes (RP=2,48 (1,97–3,11)). Ces effets étaient de plus grande amplitude que ceux observés en utilisant l’exposition initiale à l’entrée dans l’étude (de +0,30 à +0,94). Par ailleurs, les hommes et les femmes exposés au DER présentaient un risque plus élevé d’absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM (Risque relatif (RR)=1,38 (1,08–1,76)), comparés aux travailleurs non-exposés. La faible reconnaissance au travail était associée à un risque important d’absences pour PSM chez les hommes (RR=3,04 (1,46–6,33)) mais pas chez les femmes (RR=1,24 (0,90–1,72)). Chez les femmes uniquement, un effet indépendant du « job strain » (RR=1,50 (1,12–2,07)) et du DER (RR=1,34 (0,98–1,84)), ainsi qu’un effet de l’exposition combinée au « job strain » (demande psychologique élevée et faible latitude décisionnelle) et au DER (RR=1,97 (1,40–2,78)) sur le risque d’absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM ont également été observés. Conclusion : Les résultats de cette thèse supportent l’effet délétère de l’exposition au DER sur la prévalence de la détresse psychologique et sur le risque d’absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM chez les hommes et les femmes. Chez les hommes et les femmes, l’exposition cumulée au DER était associée à une prévalence élevée de la détresse psychologique à trois ans et à cinq ans. De plus, les contraintes psychosociales du DER ont été associées aux absences médicalement certifiés pour PSM. Chez les femmes particulièrement, un effet combiné du « job strain » et du DER était associé à un risque plus élevé d’absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM, que l’exposition à un seul des deux facteurs. Ces résultats suggèrent que la réduction des contraintes psychosociales au travail pourrait contribuer à réduire l’incidence des PSM, incluant les absences médicalement certifiées pour PSM.

Obesity is a major challenge to human health worldwide. Little is known about the brain mechanisms that are associated with overeating and obesity in humans. In this project, multimodal neuroimaging techniques were utilized to study brain neurotransmission and anatomy in obesity. Bariatric surgery was used as an experimental method for assessing whether the possible differences between obese and non-obese individuals change following the weight loss. This could indicate whether obesity-related altered neurotransmission and cerebral atrophy are recoverable or whether they represent stable individual characteristics. Morbidly obese subjects (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2) and non-obese control subjects (mean BMI 23 kg/m2) were studied with positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the PET studies, focus was put on dopaminergic and opioidergic systems, both of which are crucial in the reward processing. Brain dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) availability was measured using [11C]raclopride and µ-opioid receptor (MOR) availability using [11C]carfentanil. In the MRI studies, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) of T1-weighted MRI images was used, coupled with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Obese subjects underwent bariatric surgery as their standard clinical treatment during the study. Preoperatively, morbidly obese subjects had significantly lower MOR availability but unaltered D2R availability in several brain regions involved in reward processing, including striatum, insula, and thalamus. Moreover, obesity disrupted the interaction between the MOR and D2R systems in ventral striatum. Bariatric surgery and concomitant weight loss normalized MOR availability in the obese, but did not influence D2R availability in any brain region. Morbidly obese subjects had also significantly lower grey and white matter densities globally in the brain, but more focal changes were located in the areas associated with inhibitory control, reward processing, and appetite. DTI revealed also signs of axonal damage in the obese in corticospinal tracts and occipito-frontal fascicles. Surgery-induced weight loss resulted in global recovery of white matter density as well as more focal recovery of grey matter density among obese subjects. Altogether these results show that the endogenous opioid system is fundamentally linked to obesity. Lowered MOR availability is likely a consequence of obesity and may mediate maintenance of excessive energy uptake. In addition, obesity has adverse effects on brain structure. Bariatric surgery however reverses MOR dysfunction and recovers cerebral atrophy. Understanding the opioidergic contribution to overeating and obesity is critical for developing new psychological or pharmacological treatments for obesity. The actual molecular mechanisms behind the positive change in structure and neurotransmitter function still remain unclear and should be addressed in the future research.

Palkitseminen on yksi keskeisimmistä työmotivaatioon ja työsuoritukseen vaikuttavista elementeistä. Tässä kvalitatiivisella tutkimusmenetelmällä laaditussa Pro gradu-tutkielmassa tutkitaan palkitsemisen vaikutusta kaupan alan myymälähenkilökunnan työmotivaatioon ja työsuoritukseen. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää millä tutki-muksen kohdeorganisaation nykyisillä kokonaispalkitsemisen keinoista on merkittävin vaikutus myymälähenkilökunnan työmotivaatioon ja työsuoritukseen. Lisäksi tutkimus havinnollistaa, millaisilla muilla palkitsemisen keinoilla pystytään vaikuttamaan myymälähenkilökunnan työmotivaatioon siten, että sen vaikutus heijastuu positiivisena impulssina myös työntekijän työsuoritukseen. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys on rakennettu kokonaispalkitsemisen ja työmotivaation ympärille ja näkökulmia peilataan sekä yksilön kokeman oikeudenmukaisuuden, että yrityksen strategisen palkitsemisen näkökulmista. Tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan nähdä, että tulokseen sidottu palkitseminen on yksi keskeisimmistä työsuoritukseen vaikuttavista palkitsemisen elementeistä myyntityössä. Työsuoritukseen ja työmotivaatioon pystytään vaikuttamaan myös itsenäisellä työskentelytavalla, uramahdollisuuksilla ja ammatillisen kehittymisen mahdollisuuksilla. Kohdeorganisaation kokonaispalkitsemisen mallia tulisikin muokata vastaamaan entistä paremmin näitä indikaattoreita, jotta kokonaispalkitsemisen malli toimisi strategisen palkitsemisen näkökulmasta mahdollisimman optimaalisella tavalla.

Ce mémoire présente mon projet de maîtrise dont l’objectif était d’étudier les associations entre la récompense alimentaire à l’égard des aliments riches en gras et en sucres, le statut pondéral et les comportements alimentaires. Cent cinquante femmes de poids normal ou obèses ont été invitées à compléter deux questionnaires : un sur la récompense alimentaire (plaisir explicite, motivation explicite et motivation implicite) et l’autre sur les comportements alimentaires [restriction cognitive (totale, flexible et rigide), désinhibition (totale, habituelle, émotionnelle et situationnelle) et susceptibilité à la faim (totale, interne et externe)]. Aucune association n’a été observée entre la récompense alimentaire et le statut pondéral. Toutefois, un plaisir et une motivation explicites plus importants pour les aliments en général ont été notés chez les femmes avec un score plus élevé de restriction flexible. De plus, une motivation implicite plus importante pour les aliments riches en gras tendait à être associée avec un score plus élevé de susceptibilité émotionnelle à la désinhibition et a été associée significativement avec un score plus élevé de faim externe. Ces résultats suggèrent que les comportements alimentaires ont une plus grande influence sur la récompense alimentaire que le statut pondéral.

O ambiente organizacional no mundo globalizado actual é altamente instável, como consequência quer a gestão estratégica quer a sua implementação operacional, são solicitadas constantemente a adaptar-se a novos modelos de gestão e suscitam problemas às organizações que fazem sentir os seus efeitos transversalmente, uma das áreas que faz ressonância destas constantes mudanças são os Recursos Humanos. O presente trabalho centra-se no segmento restrito dessa realidade que se focaliza na liderança, motivação e recompensa. O objecto da investigação é uma instituição bancária em Luanda (Angola), como instrumento de investigação foi usado um inquérito, cujas questões decorreram do acervo conceptual patente na literatura. Concluiu-se que a avaliação da liderança é simétrica à avaliação da recompensa e que a motivação apresenta um perfil aproximado à média geral, analisados os dados em função das categorias das variáveis sociodemográficas, foi possível concluir que em múltiplas instâncias, elas condicionam e sobre determinam os resultados globais.

In cognitive tests, animals are often given a choice between two options and obtain a reward if they choose correctly. We investigated whether task format affects subjects' performance in a physical cognition test. In experiment 1, a two-choice memory test, 15 marmosets, Callithrix jacchus, had to remember the location of a food reward over time delays of increasing duration. We predicted that their performance would decline with increasing delay, but this was not found. One possible explanation was that the subjects were not sufficiently motivated to choose correctly when presented with only two options because in each trial they had a 50% chance of being rewarded. In experiment 2, we explored this possibility by testing eight naïve marmosets and seven squirrel monkeys, Saimiri sciureus, with both the traditional two-choice and a new nine-choice version of the memory test that increased the cost of a wrong choice. We found that task format affected the monkeys' performance. When choosing between nine options, both species performed better and their performance declined as delays became longer. Our results suggest that the two-choice format compromises the assessment of physical cognition, at least in memory tests with these New World monkeys, whereas providing more options, which decreases the probability of obtaining a reward when making a random guess, improves both performance and measurement validity of memory. Our findings suggest that two-choice tasks should be used with caution in comparisons within and across species because they are prone to motivational biases.

From birth, infants preferentially attend to human motion, which allows them to learn to interpret other peoples’ facial expressions and mental states. Evidence from adults shows that selectivity of the amygdala and the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) to biological motion correlates with social network size. Social motivation—one’s desire to orient to the social world, to seek and find reward in social interaction, and to maintain social relationships—may also contribute to neural specialization for biological motion and to social network characteristics. The current study aimed to determine whether neural selectivity for biological motion relates to social network characteristics, and to gain preliminary evidence as to whether social motivation plays a role in this relation. Findings suggest that neural selectivity for biological motion in the pSTS is positively related to social network size in middle childhood and that this relation is moderated by social motivation.

Children develop in a sea of reciprocal social interaction, but their brain development is predominately studied in non-interactive contexts (e.g., viewing photographs of faces). This dissertation investigated how the developing brain supports social interaction. Specifically, novel paradigms were used to target two facets of social experience—social communication and social motivation—across three studies in children and adults. In Study 1, adults listened to short vignettes—which contained no social information—that they believed to be either prerecorded or presented over an audio-feed by a live social partner. Simply believing that speech was from a live social partner increased activation in the brain’s mentalizing network—a network involved in thinking about others’ thoughts. Study 2 extended this paradigm to middle childhood, a time of increasing social competence and social network complexity, as well as structural and functional social brain development. Results showed that, as in adults, regions of the mentalizing network were engaged by live speech. Taken together, these findings indicate that the mentalizing network may support the processing of interactive communicative cues across development. Given this established importance of social-interactive context, Study 3 examined children’s social motivation when they believed they were engaged in a computer-based chat with a peer. Children initiated interaction via sharing information about their likes and hobbies and received responses from the peer. Compared to a non-social control, in which children chatted with a computer, peer interaction increased activation in mentalizing regions and reward circuitry. Further, within mentalizing regions, responsivity to the peer increased with age. Thus, across all three studies, social cognitive regions associated with mentalizing supported real-time social interaction. In contrast, the specific social context appeared to influence both reward circuitry involvement and age-related changes in neural activity. Future studies should continue to examine how the brain supports interaction across varied real-world social contexts. In addition to illuminating typical development, understanding the neural bases of interaction will offer insight into social disabilities such as autism, where social difficulties are often most acute in interactive situations. Ultimately, to best capture human experience, social neuroscience ought to be embedded in the social world.
