Molybdenum-doped TiO2 organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions by in situ surface modification using n-butylamine. This was carried out at 150 degrees C at autogeneous pressure over 18 h. n-Butylamine was selected as a surfactant since it produced nanoparticles of the desired size and shape. The products were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, dynamic light-scattering spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Chemical oxygen demand was estimated in order to determine the photodegradation efficiency of the molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles in the treatment of pharmaceutical effluents. It was found that molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles showed higher photocatalytic efficiency than untreated TiO2 nanoparticles.

Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. Recently, the term diabetic cardiomyopathy has been proposed to describe the changes in the heart that occur in response to chronic hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Ventricular remodelling in diabetic cardiomyopathy includes left ventricular hypertrophy, increased interstitial fibrosis, apoptosis and diastolic dysfunction. Mechanisms behind these changes are increased oxidative stress and renin-angiotensin system activation. The diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rat is a non-obese model of type 2 diabetes that exhibits defective insulin signalling. Recently two interconnected stress response pathways have been discovered that link insulin signalling, longevity, apoptosis and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. The insulin-receptor PI3K/Ak pathway inhibits proapoptotic FOXO3a in response to insulin signalling and the nuclear Sirt1 deacetylase inhibits proapoptotic p53 and modulates FOXO3a in favour of survival and growth. --- Levosimendan is a calcium sensitizing agent used for the management of acute decompensated heart failure. Levosimendan acts as a positive inotrope by sensitizing cardiac troponin C to calcium and exerts vasodilation by opening mitochondrial and sarcolemmal ATP-sensitive potassium channels. Levosimendan has been described to have beneficial effects in ventricular remodelling after myocardial infarction. The aims of the study were to characterize whether diabetic cardiomyopathy associates with cardiac dysfunction, cardiomyocyte apoptosis, hypertrophy and fibrosis in spontaneously diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, which were used to model type 2 diabetes. Protein expression and activation of the Akt FOXO3a and Sirt1 p53 pathways were examined in the development of ventricular remodelling in GK rats with and without myocardial infarction (MI). The third and fourth studies examined the effects of levosimendan on ventricular remodelling and gene expression in post-MI GK rats. The results demonstrated that diabetic GK rats develop both modest hypertension and features similar to diabetic cardiomyopathy including cardiac dysfunction, LV hypertrophy and fibrosis and increased apoptotic signalling. MI induced a sustained increase in cardiomyocyte apoptosis in GK rats together with aggravated LV hypertrophy and fibrosis. The GK rat myocardium exhibited decreased Akt- FOXO3a phosphorylation and increased nuclear translocation of FOXO3a and overproduction of the Sirt1 protein. Treatment with levosimendan decreased cardiomyocyte apoptosis, senescence and LV hypertrophy and altered the gene expression profile in GK rat myocardium. The findings indicate that impaired cardioprotection via Akt FOXO3a and p38 MAPK is associated with increased apoptosis, whereas Sirt1 functions in counteracting apoptosis and the development of LV hypertrophy in the GK rat myocardium. Overall, levosimendan treatment protects against post-MI ventricular remodelling and alters the gene expression profile in the GK rat myocardium.

General relativity has very specific predictions for the gravitational waveforms from inspiralling compact binaries obtained using the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation. We investigate the extent to which the measurement of the PN coefficients, possible with the second generation gravitational-wave detectors such as the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the third generation gravitational-wave detectors such as the Einstein Telescope (ET), could be used to test post-Newtonian theory and to put bounds on a subclass of parametrized-post-Einstein theories which differ from general relativity in a parametrized sense. We demonstrate this possibility by employing the best inspiralling waveform model for nonspinning compact binaries which is 3.5PN accurate in phase and 3PN in amplitude. Within the class of theories considered, Advanced LIGO can test the theory at 1.5PN and thus the leading tail term. Future observations of stellar mass black hole binaries by ET can test the consistency between the various PN coefficients in the gravitational-wave phasing over the mass range of 11-44M(circle dot). The choice of the lower frequency cutoff is important for testing post-Newtonian theory using the ET. The bias in the test arising from the assumption of nonspinning binaries is indicated.

The susceptibility of a monodeamidated RNAaseA (RNAaseAa1) towards carboxypeptidaseA , alpha-chymotrypsin and pepsin has been studied. Similar to RNAaseA, the C-terminal of RNAaseAa1 is not available for carboxypeptidaseA hydrolysis. The thermal stability of RNAaseAa1 as probed through chymotryptic digestion is found to be less than that of RNAaseA. Preliminary chromatographic analysis of the digested material, however, suggests that the nature of thermal transition might be the same in the two proteins. Pepsin inactivates RNAaseAa1 more slowly than does RNAaseA. Accordingly, less peptide bonds, almost half that of RNAaseA, are cleaved by pepsin in RNAaseAa1. The accumulation of RNAase-P type intermediates is not evident during peptic digestion of RNAaseAa1. Reaction with O-benzoquinone at low pH shows that methionines of the deamidated protein seem to have higher reactivities. These observations indicate a different structure for RNAaseAa1 at elevated temperature and low pH.

Antiferroelectricity of sol-gel grown pure and La modified PbZrO3 thin films, with a maximum extent of 6 mol%, has been characterized by temperature dependent P-E hysteresis loops within the applied electric field of 60 MV/m. It has been seen that on extent of La modification electric field induced phase transformation can be altered and at 40 degrees C its maximum value has been observed at +/- 38 MV/m on 6 mol% modifications whereas the minimum value is +/- 22 MV/m on 1 mol%. On La modification the variation of electric field induced phase transformations at 40 degrees C has been correlated with the temperature of ntiferroelectric phase condensation on cooling. The critical electric fields for saturated P-E hysteresis loops have been defined from field dependent maximum polarizations and their variations on La modification show a similar trend as found in their dielectric phase transition temperatures. Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a familial disorder characterized by ventricular repolarization that makes carriers vulnerable to malignant ventricular tachycardia and sudden cardiac death. The three main subtypes (LQT1, LQT2 and LQT3) constitute 95% of cases. The disorder is characterized by a prolonged QT interval in electrocardiograms (ECG), but a considerable portion are silent carriers presenting normal (QTc < 440 ms) or borderline (QTc < 470 ms) QT interval. Genetic testing is available only for 60-70% of patients. A number of pharmaceutical compounds also affect ventricular repolarization, causing a clinically similar disorder called acquired long QT syndrome. LQTS carriers - who already have impaired ventricular repolarization - are especially vulnerable. In this thesis, asymptomatic genotyped LQTS mutation carriers with non-diagnostic resting ECG were studied. The body surface potential mapping (BSPM) system was utilized for ECG recording, and signals were analyzed with an automated analysis program. QT interval length, and the end part of the T wave, the Tpe interval, was studied during exercise stress testing and an epinephrine bolus test. In the latter, T wave morphology was also analyzed. The effect of cetirizine was studied in LQTS carriers and also with supra- therapeutic dose in healthy volunteers. At rest, LQTS mutation carriers had a slightly longer heart rate adjusted QTc interval than healthy subjects (427 ± 31 ms and 379 ± 26 ms; p<0.001), but significant overlapping existed. LQT2 mutation carriers had a conspicuously long Tpe-interval (113 ± 24 ms; compared to 79 ± 11 ms in LQT1, 81 ± 17 ms in LQT3 and 78 ± 10 ms in controls; p<0.001). In exercise stress tests, LQT1 mutation carriers exhibit a long QT interval at high heart rates and during recovery, whereas LQT2 mutation carriers have a long Tpe interval at the beginning of exercise and at the end of recovery at low heart rates. LQT3 mutation carriers exhibit prominent shortening of both QT and Tpe intervals during exercise. A small epinephrine bolus revealed disturbed repolarization, especially in LQT2 mutation carriers, who developed prolonged Tpe intervals. A higher epinephrine bolus caused abnormal T waves with a different T wave profile in LQTS mutation carriers compared to healthy controls. These effects were seen in LQT3 as well, a group that may easily escape other provocative tests. In the cetirizine test, the QT and Tpe intervals were not prolonged in LQTS mutation carriers or in healthy controls. Subtype-specific findings in exercise test and epinephrine bolus test help to diagnose silent LQTS mutation carriers and to guide subtype-specific treatments. The Tpe interval, which signifies the repolarization process, seems to be a sensitive marker of disturbed repolarization along with the QT interval, which signifies the end of repolarization. This method may be used in studying compounds that are suspected to affect repolarization. Cetirizine did not adversely alter ventricular repolarization and would not be pro-arrhythmic in common LQT1 and LQT2 subtypes when used at its recommended doses.

Polymeric admixtures to concrete ingredients modify the properties of the processed concrete. Ductility is one such property modification. This investigation deals with the development of a method of incorporating natural rubber latex into concrete ingredients with only marginal effects on the compressive strength of base plain concrete. This retention of the strength has been effected by reducing the water/cement ratio with the aid of a superplasticizer. The quantity of natural rubber latex is expressed as the dry rubber content by percentage of volume of concrete. The compressive and tensile strengths, as well as post peak ductile behaviour have been the basis for comparison with those of unmodified concrete.

Though many studies have examined post-acquisition integration challenges, they have mainly focused on rationalistic explanations for the difficulties encountered in post-acquisition integration. There remains little knowledge of how the ‘irrational’ features of post-acquisition decision-making may impede organizational integration. This study attempts to bridge that gap by examining post-acquisition decision-making from a sensemaking perspective. The paper presents an in-depth analysis of a merger between a large Finnish furniture manufacturer and three smaller Swedish furniture companies. By focusing on the sensemaking processes surrounding integration issues, we uncover four interrelated tendencies that illuminate why the frequent problem of slow progress during post-acquisition integration occurs: inherent ambiguity concerning integration issues; cultural confusion in social interaction and communication; organizational hypocrisy in integration decision-making; and the politicization of integration issues.

For the past two centuries, nationalism has been among the most influential legitimizing principles of political organization. According to its simple definition, nationalism is a principle or a way of thinking and acting which holds that the world is divided into nations, and that national and political units should be congruent. Nationalism can thus be divided into two aspects: internal and external. Internally, the political units, i.e., states, should be made up of only one nation. Externally each nation-state should be sovereign. Transnational national governance of rights of national minorities violates both these principles. This study explores the formation, operation, and effectiveness of the European post-Cold War minorities system. The study identifies two basic approaches to minority rights: security and justice. These approaches have been used to legitimize international minority politics and they also inform the practice of transnational governance. The security approach is based on the recognition that the norm of national self-determination cannot be fulfilled in all relevant cases, and so minority rights are offered as a compensation to the dissatisfied national groups, reducing their aspiration to challenge the status quo. From the justice perspective, minority rights are justified as a compensatory strategy against discrimination caused by majority nation-building. The research concludes that the post-Cold War minorities system was justified on the basis of a particular version of the security approach, according to which only Eastern European minority situations are threatening because of the ethnic variant of nationalism that exists in that region. This security frame was essential in internationalising minority issues and justifying the swift development of norms and institutions to deal with these issues. However, from the justice perspective this approach is problematic, since it justified double standards in European minority politics. Even though majority nation-building is often detrimental to minorities also in Western Europe, Western countries can treat their minorities more or less however they choose. One of the main contributions of this thesis is the detailed investigation of the operation of the post-Cold War minorities system. For the first decade since its creation in the early 1990s, the system operated mainly through its security track, which is based on the field activities of the OSCE that are supported by the EU. The study shows how the effectiveness of this track was based on inter-organizational cooperation in which various transnational actors compensate for each other s weaknesses. After the enlargement of the EU and dissolution of the membership conditionality this track, which was limited to Eastern Europe from the start, has become increasingly ineffective. Since the EU enlargement, the focus minorities system has shifted more and more towards its legal track, which is based on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (Council of Europe). The study presents in detail how a network of like-minded representatives of governments, international organizations, and independent experts was able strengthen the framework convention s (originally weak) monitoring system considerably. The development of the legal track allows for a more universal and consistent, justice-based approach to minority rights in contemporary Europe, but the nationalist principle of organization still severely hinders the materialization of this possibility.

More than half a decade has passed since the December 26th 2004 tsunami hit the Indian coast leaving a trail of ecological, economic and human destruction in its wake. We reviewed the coastal ecological research carried out in India in the light of the tsunami. In addition, we also briefly reviewed the ecological research in other tsunami affected countries in Asia namely Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Maldives in order to provide a broader perspective of ecological research after tsunami. A basic search in ISI Web of Knowledge using keywords ``tsunami'' and ``India'' resulted in 127 peer reviewed journal articles, of which 39 articles were pertaining to ecological sciences. In comparison, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Maldives had, respectively, eight, four, 21 and two articles pertaining to ecology. In India, bioshields received the major share of scientific interest (14 out of 39) while only one study (each) was dedicated to corals, seagrasses, seaweeds and meiofauna, pointing to the paucity of research attention dedicated to these critical ecosystems. We noted that very few interdisciplinary studies looked at linkages between pure/applied sciences and the social sciences in India. In addition, there appears to be little correlation between the limited research that was done and its influence on policy in India. This review points to gap areas in ecological research in India and highlights the lessons learnt from research in other tsunami-affected countries. It also provides guidance on the links between science and policy that are required for effective coastal zone management.
