Titanium and zirconia are bioinert materials lacking bioactivity. In this work, surface modification of the two typical biomaterials is conducted by Mg-ion-implantation using a MEVVA ion source in an attempt to increase their bioactivity. Mg ions were implanted into zirconia and titanium with fluences ranging from 1 x 10(17) to 3 x 10(17) ions/cm(2) at 40 keV. The Mg-implanted samples, as well as control (unimplanted) samples, were immersed in SBF for 7 days and then removed to identify the presence of calcium and phosphate (Ca-P) coatings and to characterize their morphology and structure by SEM, XRD, and FT-IR. SEM observations confirm that globular aggregates are formed on the surfaces of the Mg-implanted zirconia and titanium while no precipitates are observed on the control samples. XRD and FT-IR analyses reveal that the deposits are carbonated hydroxyapatite (HAp). Our experimental results demonstrate that Mg-implantation improves the bioactivity of zirconia and titanium. Further, it is found that the degree of bioactivity is adjustable by the ion dose. Mechanisms are proposed to interpret the improvement of bioactivity as a result of Mg implantation and the difference in bioactivity between zirconia and titanium. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Intrinsic nanocrystalline silicon films (nc-Si:H) were prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method. Films' microstructures and characteristics were studied with Raman spectroscopy and Atom Force Microscope (AFM). The electronic conductivity of nc-Si:H films was found to be 4.9 x 10(0)Omega(-1) cm(-1), which was one order of magnitude higher than the reported 10(-3)-10(-1)Omega(-1)cm(-1). And PIN solar cells with nc-Si:H film as intrinsic thin-layer (ITO/n(+)-nc-Si:H/i-nc-Si:H/p-c-Si/Ag) were researched. The cell's performances were measured, the open-circuit voltage V-oc was 534.7 mV, short-circuit current I-sc was 49.24 mA (3 cm(2)) and fill factor FF was 0.4228. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. A wide bandgap and highly conductive p-type hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) window layer was prepared with a conventional RF-PECVD system under large H dilution condition, moderate power density, high pressure and low substrate temperature. The optoelectrical and structural properties of this novel material have been investigated by Raman and UV-VIS transmission spectroscopy measurements indicating that these films are composed of nanocrystallites embedded in amorphous SiHx matrix and with a widened bandgap. The observed downshift of the optical phonon Raman spectra (514.4 cm(-1)) from crystalline Si peak (521 cm(-1)) and the widening of the bandgap indicate a quantum confinement effect from the Si nanocrystallites. By using this kind of p-layer, a-Si:H solar cells on bare stainless steel foil in nip sequence have been successfully prepared with a V c of 0.90 V, a fill factor of 0.70 and an efficiency of 9.0%, respectively. A series of diphasic nanocrystalline silicon films and solar cells was prepared using different hydrogen dilution ratios of silane by very high frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (VHF-PECVD). It was observed that after light soaking the open circuit voltage (V-oc) of the diphasic solar cells increased, while that of amorphous silicon solar cells decreased. Raman scattering spectroscopy was performed on the series of diphasic silicon films before and after light soaking. It was found that after light soaking the nanostruclures in the diphasic nanocrystalline silicon films were changed. Both the grain sizes and grain volume fraction reduced, while the grain boundary components increased. These results provide experimental evidence for the conjecture that the light-induced increase in V-oc of the diphasic nanocrystalline solar cells might be induced by the changes in the nanostructure of the intrinsic layer. Hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) n-layers have been used to prepare heterojunction solar cells on flat p-type crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafers. The nc-Si:H n-layers were deposited by radio-frequency (RF) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), and characterized using Raman spectroscopy, optical transmittance and activation energy of dark-conductivity. The nc-Si:H n-layers obtained comprise fine grained nanocrystallites embedded in amorphous matrix, which have a wider bandgap and a smaller activation energy. Heterojunction solar cells incorporated with the nc-Si n-layer were fabricated using configuration of Ag (100 nm)/1T0 (80 nm)/n-nc-Si:H (15 nm)/buffer a-Si:H/p-c-Si (300 mu m)/Al (200 nm), where a very thin intrinsic a-Si:H buffer layer was used to passivate the p-c-Si surface, followed by a hydrogen plasma treatment prior to the deposition of the thin nanocrystalline layer. The results show that heterojunction solar cells subjected to these surface treatments exhibit a remarkable increase in the efficiency, up to 14.1% on an area of 2.43 cm(2). (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. An in situ energy dispersive x-ray diffraction study on nanocrystalline ZnS was carried out under high pressure up to 30.8 GPa by using a diamond anvil cell. The phase transition from the wurtzite to the zinc-blende structure occurred at 11.5 GPa, and another obvious transition to a new phase with rock-salt structure also appeared at 16.0 GPa-which was higher than the value for the bulk material. The bulk modulus and the pressure derivative of nanocrystalline ZnS were derived by fitting the Birch-Murnaghan equation. The resulting modulus was higher than that of the corresponding bulk material, indicating that the nanomaterial has higher hardness than the bulk material.

The GaSb and Ga0.62In0.38Sb nanocrystals were embedded in the SiO2 films by radio-frequency magnetron co-sputtering and were grown on GaSb and Si substrates at different temperatures. We present results on the 10K excitonic photoluminescence (PL) properties of nanocrystalline GaSb and Ga0.62In0.38Sb as a function of their size. The measurements show that the PL of the GaSb and Ga0.62In0.38Sb nanocrystallites follows the quantum confinement model very closely. By using deconvolution of PL spectra, origins of structures in PL were identified. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Si-based nanomaterials are some new photoeletronic and informational materials developed rapidly in recent years, and they have potential applications in the light emitting devices, e. g. Si light emitting diode, Si laser and integrated Si-based photoelectronics. Among them are nano-scale porous silicon (ps), Si nanocrystalline embedded SiO2 (SiOx, x < 2.0) matrices, Si nanoquantum dot and Si/SiO2 superlattice, etc. At present, there are various indications that if these materials can achieve efficient and stable luminescence, which are photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL), it is possible for them to lead to a new informational revolution in the early days of the 21st century. In this article, we will mainly review the progress of study on Si-based nanomaterials in the past ten years. The involved contents are the fabricated methods, structural characterizations and light emitting properties. Finally, we predicate the developed tendency of this field in the following ten years.

In situ energy dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements on nanocrystalline zinc sulfide have been performed by using diamond anvil cell with synchrotron radiation. There is a phase transition which the ultimate structure is rocksalt when the pressure is up to 16.0GPa. Comparing the structure of body materials, the pressure of the phase transition of nano zinc sulfide is high. We fit the: Birch-Murnaghan equation of state and obtained its ambient pressure bulk modulus and its pressure derivative. The bulk modulus of nanocrystalline zinc sulfide is higher than that of body materials, it indicate that the rigidity of nanocrystalline zinc sulfide is high.

CeO2 thin film was fabricated by dual ion beam epitaxial technique. The phenomenon of PL violet shift at room temperature was observed, and the distance of shift was about 65 nm. After the analysis of crystal structure and valence in the compound were carried out by XRD and XPS technique, it was concluded that the PL shift was related with valence of cerium ion in the oxides. When the valence of cerium ion varied front tetravalence to trivalence, the PL peak position would move from blue region to violet region and the phenomenon of "violet shift" was observed.

Amorphous Sic films are deposited on Si (111) substrates by rf magnetron sputtering and then annealed at 1200 degreesC for different times by a dc self-heating method in a vacuum annealing system. The crystallization of the amorphous Sic is determined by Raman scattering at room temperature and X-ray diffraction. The experimental result indicates that the Sic nanocrystals have formed in the films. The topography of the as-annealed films is characterized by atomic force microscopy. Measurements of photoluminescence of the as-annealed films show blue or violet light emission from the nanocrystalline Sic films and photoluminescence peak shifts to short wavelength side as the annealing time decreases.

The atomic structures and electronic properties of small Ti-N (N=2-10) clusters have been studied by using the density-functional theory with a local spin density approximation. We find that the inner-shells (3s3p) of the titanium atom plays an important role in the formation of the small clusters. We have obtained the ground state of titanium clusters, Ti-7 is found to be a magic cluster, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. Starting with Ti-8 cluster some features of the electronic structure of the titanium bulk have been developed. The ionization potentials and magnetic moments for these small titanium clusters are also presented. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021- 9606(00)30544-X].

Raman scattering of nanocrystalline silicon embedded in SiO2 matrix is systematically investigated. It is found that the Raman spectra can be well fitted by 5 Lorentzian lines in the Raman shift range of 100-600 cm(-1). The two-phonon scattering is also observed in the range of 600-1100 cm(-1) The experimental results indicate that the silicon crystallites in the films consist of nanocrystalline phase and amorphous phase; both can contribute to the Raman scattering. Besides the red-shift of the first order optical phonon modes with the decreasing size of silicon nanocrystallites, we have also found an enhancement effect on the second order Raman scattering, and the size effect on their Raman shift.

Nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) embedded SiO2 matrix has been formed by annealing the SiOx films fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. Absorption coefficient and photoluminescence of the films have been measured at room temperature. The experimental results show that there is an "aUrbach-like" b exponential absorption in the spectral range of 2.0-3.0 eV. The relationship of (alpha hv)(1/2) proportional to(hv - E-g) demonstrates that the luminescent nc-Si have an indirect band structure. The existence of Stokes shift between photoluminescence and absorption edge indicates that radiative combination can take place not only between electron states and hole states but also between shallow trap states of electrons and holes. Nanocrystalline silicon embedded SiO2 matrix is formed by annealing the SiO2 films fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. In conjunction with the micro-Ramam spectra, the absorption spectra of the films have been investigated. The blue-shift of absorption edge with decreasing size of silicon crystallites is due to quantum confinement effect. It is found that nanocrystalline silicon is of an indirect band structure, and that the absorption presents an exponential dependance absorption coefficient on photon energy ii! the range of 2.0-3.0 eV, and a sub-band appears in the the range of 1.0-1.5 eV. We believe that the exponential absorption is due to the indirect band-to-band transition of electrons in silicon nanocrystallites, while the Sub-band absorption is ascribed to transitions between the amorphous silicon states existing in the films.
