It is generally known that addition of conducting or insulating particles to mineral transformer oil, lowers its breakdown strength, E-d. However, if the particulates are of molecular dimensions, or nanoparticles, (NPs), as they are called, the breakdown strength is seen to increase considerably. Recent experiments by the authors on oil cooled power equipment such as transformers showed that, nanofluids comprising NPs of selected oxides of iron, such as Fe(3)o(4), called magnetite, added to transformer oil increased the breakdown voltage of the virgin oil and more importantly a remarkable enhancement in the thermal conductivity and the viscosity and hence an increased loadability of the transformer for a given top oil temperature (TOT).

Metal-based piezoresistive sensing devices could find a much wider applicability if their sensitivity to mechanical strain could be substantially improved. Here, we report a simple method to enhance the strain sensitivity of metal films by over two orders of magnitude and demonstrate it on specially designed microcantilevers. By locally inhomogenizing thin gold films using controlled electromigration, we have achieved a logarithmic divergence in the strain sensitivity with progressive microstructural modification. The enhancement in strain sensitivity could be explained using non-universal tunneling-percolation transport. We find that the Johnson noise limited signal-to-noise ratio is an order of magnitude better than silicon piezoresistors. This method creates a robust platform for engineering low resistance, high gauge factor metallic piezoresistors that may have profound impact on micro and nanoscale self-sensing technology. In submitted research; nanocrystalline powders having elements Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25Fe2 xInxO4 with varied amounts of indium ( x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were grown-up by modified citrate to nitrate alchemy. The realism of single phase cubic spinel creation of the synthesized ferrite samples was studied by the DTA-TGA, XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, VSM and dielectric measurements. SEM was applied to inspect the morphological variations and EDX was used to determine the compositional mass ratios. The studies on the dielectric constant (epsilon'), dielectric loss (epsilon `'), loss tangent (tan delta), ac conductivity (sigma(ac)), resistive and reactive parts of the impedance analysis (Z' and Z `') at room temperature were also carried out. The saturation magnetizations (Ms) were determined using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Ms. decreased with the increase In3+ doping content, as Fe3+ of 5(mu B) ions are replaced by In3+ of 5 mu(B) ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Nano-indentation studies have been undertaken on bulk Ge15Te85-xSix glasses (0 <= x <= 9), to estimate hardness, H and elastic modulus, E. It is found that E and H increase initially with the increase in the atomic percent of Si. Further, a plateau is seen in the composition dependence of E and H in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6. It is also seen that the addition of up to 2 at% Si increases the density rho of the glass considerably; however, further additions of Si lead to a near linear reduction in rho, in the range 2 <= x <= 6. Beyond x=6, rho increases again with Si content. The variation of molar volume V-m brings out a more fascinating picture. A plateau is seen in the intermediate phase suggesting that the molecular structure of the glasses is adapting to keep the count of constraints fixed in this particular phase. The observed variations in mechanical properties are associated with the Boolchand's intermediate phase in the present glassy system, in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6, suggested earlier from calorimetric and electrical switching studies. The present results reveal rather directly the existence of the intermediate phase in elastic and plastic properties of chalcogenide glasses. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report a simple, template free and low-temperature hydrothermal reaction pathway using Cu(II) - thiourea complex (prepared in situ from copper (II) chloride and thiourea as precursors) and citric acid as complexing agent to synthesize two-dimensional hierarchical nano-structures of covellite (CuS). The product was characterized with the help of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The concentration of citric acid in the hydrothermal precursor solution was seen to have a profound effect on the nanostructure of the product generated. Based on the outcoming product nano-architecture at different concentration of the ionic surfactant in the hydrothermal precursor solution a possible mechanism suited for reaction and further nucleation is also discussed. The combustion synthesis has been utilized to prepare nanophased powders of cobalt spinel ferrite using ODH and glycine fuels. The product was characterized by X‐ray diffraction; Fourier transformed spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV‐Vis absorption etc. The XRD patterns reveal spinal cubic structure. SEM profiles show the product is porous, agglomeration, irregular in shape. The crystallite size was estimated using Scherer’s formula and W‐H plots and show nano in size (13 nm: ODH & 36 nm: Glycine). The UV‐Vis absorption shows at ∼430 nm in both the samples.

Ag-Fe nanoparticles with a highly Ag rich average composition were synthesized by the sonochemical route. Silver-iron system exhibits a wide miscibility gap in the bulk materials. Interestingly, a graded compositional profile along the nanoparticle radius was observed. Regions at and near the surface of the nanoparticle contained both Ag and Fe atoms. The composition got relatively deficient Fe towards the center of the particle with particle core made up of pure Ag. Alloying of Ag and Fe is confirmed by the absence of diffraction signal corresponding to pure Fe phase and presence of a paramagnetic phase in nanoparticles containing a diamagnetic (Ag) and ferromagnetic (Fe) elements.

The basic framework and - conceptual understanding of the metallurgy of Ti alloys is strong and this has enabled the use of titanium and its alloys in safety-critical structures such as those in aircraft and aircraft engines. Nevertheless, a focus on cost-effectiveness and the compression of product development time by effectively integrating design with manufacturing in these applications, as well as those emerging in bioengineering, has driven research in recent decades towards a greater predictive capability through the use of computational materials engineering tools. Therefore this paper focuses on the complexity and variety of fundamental phenomena in this material system with a focus on phase transformations and mechanical behaviour in order to delineate the challenges that lie ahead in achieving these goals. Decoherence as an obstacle in quantum computation is viewed as a struggle between two forces [1]: the computation which uses the exponential dimension of Hilbert space, and decoherence which destroys this entanglement by collapse. In this model of decohered quantum computation, a sequential quantum computer loses the battle, because at each time step, only a local operation is carried out but g*(t) number of gates collapse. With quantum circuits computing in parallel way the situation is different- g(t) number of gates can be applied at each time step and number gates collapse because of decoherence. As g(t) ≈ g*(t) competition here is even [1]. Our paper improves on this model by slowing down g*(t) by encoding the circuit in parallel computing architectures and running it in Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) paradigm. We have proposed a parallel ion trap architecture for single-bit rotation of a qubit.

Chronic recording of neural signals is indispensable in designing efficient brain machine interfaces and in elucidating human neurophysiology. The advent of multichannel microelectrode arrays has driven the need for electronics to record neural signals from many neurons. The dynamic range of the system is limited by background system noise which varies over time. We propose a neural amplifier in UMC 130 nm, 2P8M CMOS technology. It can be biased adaptively from 200 nA to 2 uA, modulating input referred noise from 9.92 uV to 3.9 uV. We also describe a low noise design technique which minimizes the noise contribution of the load circuitry. The amplifier can pass signal from 5 Hz to 7 kHz while rejecting input DC offsets at electrode-electrolyte interface. The bandwidth of the amplifier can be tuned by the pseudo-resistor for selectively recording low field potentials (LFP) or extra cellular action potentials (EAP). The amplifier achieves a mid-band voltage gain of 37 dB and minimizes the attenuation of the signal from neuron to the gate of the input transistor. It is used in fully differential configuration to reject noise of bias circuitry and to achieve high PSRR.

It is well accepted that technology plays a critical role in socio-technical transitions, and sustainable development pathways. A society‘s amenability to the intervening (sustainable) technology is fundamental to permit these transitions. The current age is at a juncture wherein technological advancements and capacities provide the common individual with affordable and unlimited choice. Technological advancement and complexity can either remain simple and unseen to the user or may daunt him to keep away, in which case the intended pathways remain unexploited. The current paper explores the reasons behind rejection of technology and proposes a solution model to address these factors in accommodating socio-technical transitions. The paper begins with structuring the societal levels at which technological rejection occurs and proceeds to discuss technology rejection at the individual user (niche)level. The factors influencing decisions regarding technology rejection are identified and discussed with particular relevance to the progressive world (Asia).

The authors studied the formation of a wafer-scale network of connected colloidal beads by reactive ion etching. The dimensions of the connections have been studied as a function of etching time for colloidal beads of different sizes, and could be well controlled. The authors have found that the nano-network forms and disappears for the same time of etching independent of the diameter of the polystyrene beads. With recent interest of connected colloidal networks in various optical sensing applications, such as photonic crystals, as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates, the studies have potential uses in the development of wafer-scale nanophotonic sensors.

In the present study, WC-12Co coatings were deposited by detonation-spraying technique using conventional and nanostructured WC-12Co feedstock at four different oxy/fuel ratios (OF ratio). The coatings exhibited the presence of phases like W2C and W due to the decarburization of the WC phase, and the proportions of these phases were higher in the nano WC-12Co coatings compared with conventional WC-12Co coatings. Coating hardness and fracture toughness were measured. The tribological performance of coatings was examined under dry sand rubber wheel abrasion wear, and solid particle erosion wear conditions. The mechanical and wear properties of coatings were influenced by degree of decarburization and more so in the case of nanostructured WC-Co coatings. The results indicate that the extent of decarburization has a substantial influence on the elastic modulus of the coating which in turn is related to the extent of intersplat cracking of the coating.

Here, we report for the first time a simple thermal oxidation strategy for the large area synthesis of Ge/GeO2 nanoholes from Ge and studied the luminescence of Ge/GeO2 and hole formation mechanism through phase and luminescence mapping. Photoluminescence mapping reveals that the emission in the visible range is only from the hole region, which provokes the necessity of the nanoholes. Such materials can also be used to convert ultraviolet to visible radiation for detection by conventional phototubes and to coat blue or ultraviolet diodes to obtain white light.

Reports on the alloys formed from immiscible atoms when they are contained in a nano-sized system have initiated several research activities in the recent years. Bridging of the miscibility gap at nanoscale is significant as it has the potential to produce novel alloy materials with useful technological applications. Although the literature contains noticeable number of reports on the formation of solid solution between bulk immiscible atoms, several issues related to phase stability and microstructure remain unaddressed. This article discusses some of these issues using examples from the work done by the author's research group on isolated nanoparticles of bulk immiscible binary systems such as Ag-Ni, Ag-Fe and Ag-Co.
