South Asia, a source of great literary and literacy traditions and a generator of great philosophies, also contains a large percentage of illiterate people, the majority of them women. South Asia includes India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Burma and Afghanistan. The progress of these countries is dependent on female literacy because health, hygiene, and nutrition problems can be partly overcome through educating women. “Illiteracy is closely related to underdevelopment and poverty, and the elimination of illiteracy represents an essential condition for the development and well-being of peoples and nations" (UNESCO PROAP, 1989: II ). In South Asia, women constitute nearly two- thirds of illiterate adults. There is an inherent contradiction in the region between modern amenities, modern educational systems, and advanced communication systems, on the one hand, and the high level of illiteracy and significant backwardness, on the other.

Contracting essentially involves an agreement between two parties in relation to a particular matter. When defined in this way, contracting has been occurring as a social practice since humans first bartered and conducted trade, and should be understood as both an economic as well as a social transaction. This entry explains key aspects of the sociology While contracting is commonly understood to be a market based transaction, Polyani famously argued that for most of recorded history commercial transactions were in fact secondary to social relationships. In other words, whenever economic transactions occurred, they were always in the context of reciprocal social relationships. Historically the primary mode of exchange may well have been based on social exchange and reciprocity, however with the rise of extensive industrialization in the 18th Century, the primary mode of exchange has led to more of a market based mode of exchange in developed countries, with the focus more about the economic transaction. As an agreement between two entities, contracting is an essential element to economic systems as it is the basis of most transactions, whether the agreement is verbal or written, explicit or implied. Contracting is thus a pervasive activity in our society, particularly between organizations, although individuals also engage in contracting. Typically, when discussing contracting, authors have either focused on the nature of the agreement itself, or on the governance arrangements in place to carry out the agreement.

Nonprofit organizations have existed, in one form or another, for thousands of years. In many countries of the world nonprofits employ significant numbers of people, and contribute a significant percentage of GDP. Consequently, nonprofits are an important element of modern economies. Additionally, nonprofits make a significant contribution to society, due to the roles they play in caring for the poor or sick, fostering civil society, providing education and promoting religion...

This paper presents research that investigated the role of conflict in the editorial process of the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. The study used a grounded approach to analyzing 147 conversations about quality from the archived history of the Wikipedia article 'Australia'. It found that conflict in Wikipedia is a generative friction, regulated by references to policy as part of a coordinated effort within the community to improve the quality of articles.

The cycling interaction between climate change and buildings is of dynamic nature. On one hand, buildings have contributed significantly to the process of human‐induced climate change. On the other hand, climate change is also expected to impact on many aspects of buildings, including building design, construction, and operation. In this entry, these two aspects of knowledge are reviewed. The potential strategies of building design and operation to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from buildings and to prepare the buildings to withstand a range of possible climate change scenarios are also discussed.

It has been recognized for some time that the liberalization of trade policies has had deleterious impacts on the world’s natural environment. The rapid expansion of globalized goods and services continues to create a human footprint with longlasting environmental consequences (White 2010). It is a footprint that represents rapid human activity and with it has come new commercial opportunities, not only for global businesses but also for organized criminal networks. Both the acceleration and by-products of global trade have created new markets as well as underground economies. As the opening quotation reveals, transnational environmental crime must become a policing priority as organized criminal...

Metacognitive theory provides a novel conceptual framework to understand the development and maintenance of psychopathology. It emphasizes the importance of stored knowledge guiding the individual’s plan for coping with heightened cognitive-affective arousal. According to the metacognitive model individuals experience strong affective responses and engage in a process of metacognitive appraisal and initiation of coping responses in the pursuit of cognitive-affective self-regulation. This chapter outlines the details of this theoretical approach as applied to substance misuse and the metacognitive treatment components aimed at interrupting the selection of maladaptive coping responses.

Commercial success in the music industry is obviously related to one’s ability to use musical artisanship as a basis for generating profits and to accumulate substantial wealth. That may seem fairly straightforward, but commercial success is an elusive concept that is continuously negotiated within the industry to determine both what should be considered “success” as well as how it should be measured. This entry discusses commercial success in the popular music industry and strategies used to achieve it.

“The challenge today is not just retaining talented people, but fully engaging them, capturing their minds and hearts at each stage of their work lives” (Kaye & Jordan-Evans, 2003, p. 11). Engaged employees produce positive work outcomes such as increased productivity satisfaction, and reduced turnover (Kahn, 1990, 1992; Saks, 2006). Engaged employees also impact on customers and co-workers’ positive experiences such as increased customer satisfaction (Wagner & Harter, 2006). Further, engaged employees demonstrate higher levels of trust in management and share more positive experiences with co-workers than disengage employees (Payne, Cangemi, Fuqua, & Muhleakamp, 1998). Past studies show that having a high proportion of engaged employees increases organizational performance, such as profitability and reputation (Wagner & Harter, 2006; Fleming & Asplund, 2007; Ketter, 2008). Having experienced the benefits of having engaged employees, organizations have become more aware of this issue and have been focusing on facilitating engagement climate within workplaces. Recently, an interest in positive psychology, instead of negative aspects of human behaviours, has become a focus for both scholars and practitioners. The trend towards positive psychology has led to the emergence of the concept of work engagement(Chughtai & Buckley, 2008). This article reviews literatures in the area of positive psychology and psychological stress, and discusses how organizations can increase work engagement among their organizational members. The remainder of this article is organised in four sections. First, we define work engagement as used in this article and psychological outcomes of work engagement. Second, we identify ways to increase work engagement among employees. Following this, we further discuss how gender roles influence individuals’ engagement at work. The final sections conclude the paper with a discussion of the practical implications.

Newell (1985, 1986) identified the importance of interacting constraints on the emergent behaviours of learners or performers in sport as they assemble functional states of movement organisation in achieving task goals. Constraints, related to the person, task and environment, were defined as ‘boundaries or features that limit motion of the entity under consideration at any moment in time’ (Newell, 1986, p.347). Personal (or organismic) constraints include factors such as individual anthropometrics (height, weight, and limb lengths), fitness (e.g., strength, speed, aerobic capacity, and flexibility), mental skills (e.g. concentration, confidence, emotional control and motivation), perceptual and decisionmaking skills (e.g., recognising patterns of play, anticipation by reading the movements of opponents) and personality factors (e.g., risk taking or conservative behaviours). Newell (1986, p.350) distinguished between general environmental constraints, such as gravity, ambient temperature, natural light and altitude and task constraints, which are task specific and concerned with the goals of a specific activity. More recently, socio-cultural constraints (e.g., family support, cultural expectations and access to facilities) have also been considered as environmental constraints. Application of the constraints framework to the study of sport performance has led to task constraints being defined to include factors such as rules of games, equipment used, boundary playing areas and markings, nets and goals, the number of...

The insulated rail joint (IRJ) is an essential component in a track circuit that controls the signaling system. Failure of IRJs leads to improper functioning of the signals, with potential for catastrophic results. Therefore, IRJs are regarded as safety-critical sections of rail network; hence, all of their components must be maintained in pristine design condition.
