Kinetics of short-range ordering (SRO) in Ag with 21, 23 and 28 at% Zn is investigated by residual resistometry during isochronal and isothermal heat treatment for different states of post-deformation defect annealing after cold-rolling to about 30 and 60% thickness reduction. Resistivity changes due to pure ordering can be separated from the as-measured total resistivity change which includes defect annealing. Although the initial state of SRO of the as-rolled material can be estimated to be comparably low, for as-rolled and partially annealed states by appropriate thermal treatment evolution of SRO is achieved which corresponds quite well to that of recrystallized samples. It is observed, however, that quenched-in surplus vacancies contribute considerably to the ordering process for the recrystallized state and that this contribution is still increased by the grain growth during the final stage of annealing. It therefore turns out that SRO-kinetics under equilibrium vacancy conditions can be better observed in a state of post-deformation annealing, for which deformation induced point defects are annealed-out, but a relatively high dislocation density is still present to act as a vacancy sink. Despite the fact that chromium electrodeposition results in protection against wear and corrosion, combined with chemical resistance and good lubricity, the reduction in fatigue strength of base metal and environmental requirements causes one to search for possible alternatives. To improve the fatigue and corrosion resistance of AISI 4340 steel, an experimental study has been made for an intermediate electroless nickel layer deposited on base metal. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of nickel underplate on the fatigue and corrosion strength of hard-chromium-plated AISI 4340 steel. Deposition of the conventional wear-resistant hard chromium plating leads to a decrease in mechanical properties of the base metal, especially the fatigue strength. Rotating bending fatigue tests results indicate better performance for conventional hard chromium plating. Good corrosion resistance in salt fog exposure was obtained for the accelerated hard chromium plating. Experimental data showed higher fatigue and corrosion resistance for samples prepared with accelerated hard chromium plate over electroless nickel plate, when compared with samples without electroless nickel underplate.

A flow-injection system for multielemental analysis with a mercury(II) preconcentration step using a resin Chelite-S(R)(Serva Feinbiochemica Heidelberg, Part No. 41709) packed minicolumn by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy is described. A mercury reductive elution procedure with a mixture of SnCl2/HCl was used, which allows use of 6 mol/L HCl solution instead of concentrated hydrochoric acid. The main parameters related to ICP operation, such as radio frequency power (950-1750 W), auxiliary argon flow (0.0-1.5 L/min) and spray chamber nebulizer pressure (15-35 psi), were studied. Optimization of the FIA system was reached by defining the best eluent carrier stream (1.4-2.8 mL/min), Hgdegrees carrier stream (10-40 mL min(-1)), loading time (0.5-4.0 min), sample flow rate (1.25-10.0 mL/min), temperature of reactor gas liquid separator (GLS) (25-75 degreesC) and eluent volume (50-350 muL). Throughput is around 30 samples per hour for analytical solutions within the range 50-2500 ng Hg(II)/L. Results from certified material showed good precision (RSD < 3%, n = 12) and no statistical difference was observed for real samples analyzed by AAS and by the proposed system.

1. Adriamycin, a commonly used antineoplastic antibiotic, induces glomerular lesions in rats, resulting in persistent proteinuria and glomerulosclerosis.2. The effect of urine volume on the progression of adriamycin-induced nephropathy was studied in 70 male Wistar rats (180-200 g) observed for 30 weeks and separated into 4 groups: healthy control group (HCG, N = 10) inoculated iv with 1 ml of saline, and nephrotic groups inoculated iv with a single dose of adriamycin of 3 mg/kg body weight. The nephrotic rats were separated into 3 groups (N = 20): nephrotic control group (NCG) receiving only adriamycin; dehydrated nephrotic group (DNG) water deprived for 36 h within each 48-h period, and furosemide nephrotic group (FNG) treated with 12 mg/dl furosemide, and 0.9 g/dl NaCl in the drinking water.3. The 30-week survival rates of the DNG (100%) and HCG (100%) were significantly higher than those of the NCG (85%) and FNG (55%).4. The proteinuria observed in the HCG (range, 7.38 +/- 0.7 to 13.6 +/- 1.27 mg/24 h) was significantly lower than that observed for all the nephrotic groups throughout the experiment. The DNG presented significantly less proteinuria (range, 42.71 +/- 6.83 to 140.10 +/- 19.22 mg/24 h) than the NCG (range, 35.32 +/- 7.64 to 250.00 +/- 25.91 mg/24 h) from week 10 on. There was no significant difference between the mean 24-h proteinuria of the NCG (range, 35.32 +/- 7.64 to 250.00 +/- 25.91 mg/24 h) and the FNG (range, 35.82 +/- 7.91 to 221.54 +/- 26.74).5. The mean frequency of damaged glomeruli was 0.3% +/- 0.3 for HCG, 42% +/- 6% for CNG, 40.8% +/- 8% for DNG, and 47% +/- 14% for FNG. The median value of the tubulointerstitial lesion, evaluated by a semiquantitative method, was 0 in HCG, 10 in CNG, 8.5 in DNG and 9.5 in FNG(P<0.05 for all groups compared to HCG).6. The data indicate that reduction of urine volume has a protective effect on adriamycin-induced nephropathy.

This article reports on a series of experiments with polyethylene terepthalate (PET) treated in a radio frequency plasma reactor using argon and oxygen as a gas fuel, for treatment times equal to 5 s, 20 s, 30 s, and 100 s. The mechanical strength modification of PET fibers, evaluated by tensile tests on monofilaments, showed that oxygen and argon plasma treatment resulted in a decrease in the average tensile strength compared with the untreated fibers. This reduction in tensile strength is more significant for argon plasma and is very sensitive to the treatment time for oxygen plasma. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) used to analyze the effects of cold plasma treatment on fiber surfaces indicates differences in roughness profiles depending on the type of treatments, which were associated with variations in mechanical strength. Differences in the roughness profile, surveyed through an image analysis method, provided the distance of roughness interval, D-ri. This parameter represents the number of peaks contained in a unit length and was introduced to correlate fiber surface condition, before and after cold plasma treatments, and average tensile strength. Statistical analysis of experimental data, using Weibull cumulative distribution and linear representation, was performed to explain influences of treatment time and environmental effects on mechanical properties. The shape parameter, alpha, and density parameter, beta, from the Weibull distribution function were used to indicate the experimental data range and to confirm the mechanical performance obtained experimentally.

A more direct and efficient route to the syntheses of [Ru(NH3)(4)(X-Y)](BF4)(2), where X-Y can be 2-acetylpyridine (2-acpy) or 2-benzoylpyridine (2-bzpy), based on the reactions of [RuCl(NH3)(5)]Cl-2 with these ortho-substituted azines is described. The [Ru(2-acpy)(NH3)(4)](BF4)(2) and [Ru(NH3)(5)(2-bzpy)](BF4)(2) complexes have a molar conductance of 328 and 292 Ohm(-1) cm(2) mol(-1), respectively, corresponding to a 1:2 species in solution. These complexes showed two intense absorption bands around 620-650 and 380 nm, the energies of which are solvent dependent, decreasing with the increase of the Gutman's donor number of the solvent, and were assigned as metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT). The complexes have oxidation potentials (Ru-II/III) of +0.380 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and +0.400 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy), and reduction potentials (X-Y0/-) of -1.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and -0.950 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy) on CF3COOH/NaCF3COO at pH=3.0, scan rate 100 mV s(-1), [Ru]=1.0x10(-3) mol l(-1). Both processes show a coupled chemical reaction. Upon oxidation of the metal center, the MLCT absorption bands are bleached and restored upon subsequent reduction. In order to confirm the structure of the complexes a detailed LH NMR investigation was performed in d(6)-acetone. Further confirmation of the structure was obtained by recording the N-15 NMR spectrum of [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-bzpy)](2+) in d(6)-DMSO using the INEPT pulse sequence improving the sensitivity of N-15 by polarization transfer from the protons to the N-15. The Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE) experiments were made qualitatively for [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-acpy)](2+), and showed that H-6 of the pyridine is close to a NH3 proton, which should then be in a cis position, and, hence, confirming that acpy is acting as a bidentate ligand. The annealing processes of deformation-induced defects after cold-rolling to about 30 and 60% thickness reduction were investigated for Ag-21, 23, 28 at% Zn by means of residual electrical resistivity, microhardness, light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) Three annealing stages have been detected and consistently interpreted as annealing-out of mainly point defects and their agglomerates (stage I), formation of dislocation cells and recrystallized strain-free grains (stage II) and grain growth (stage III). Further, it is tried to determine the evolution of defect production (point defects and dislocations) during rolling deformation from measured changes of electrical resistivity and microhardness. The high incidence of tuberculosis around the world and the inability of BCG to protect certain populations clearly indicate that an improved vaccine against tuberculosis is needed. A single antigen, the mycobacterial heat shock protein hsp65, is sufficient to protect BALB/c mice against challenge infection when administered as DNA vaccine in a three-dose-based schedule. In order to simplify the vaccination schedule, we coencapsulated hsp65-DNA and trehalose dimicolate (TDM) into biodegradable poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microspheres. BALB/c mice immunized with a single dose of DNA-hsp65/TDM-1oaded microspheres produced high levels of IgG2a subtype antibody and high amounts of IFN-gamma in the supernatant of spleen cell cultures. DNA-hsp65/TDM-loaded microspheres were also able to induce high IFN-gamma production in bulk lung cells from challenged mice and confer protection as effective as that attained after three doses of naked DNA administration. This new formulation also allowed a ten-fold reduction in the DNA dose when compared to naked DNA. Thus, this combination of DNA vaccine and adjuvants with immunomodulatory and carrier properties holds the potential for an improved vaccine against tuberculosis.

The influence of structural features of tropical river humic substances (HS) on their capability to reduce mercury(II) in aqueous solutions was studied. The HS investigated were conventionally isolated from Rio Negro water-Amazonas State/Brazil by means of the collector XAD 8. In addition, the isolated HS were on-line fractionated by tangential-flow multistage ultrafiltration (nominal molecular-weight cut-offs: 100, 50, 30, 10, 5 kDa) and characterized by potentiometry and UV/VIS spectroscopy. The reduction of Hg(II) ions to elemental Hg by size-fractions of Rio Negro HS was assessed by cold-vapor AAS (CVAAS). UV/VIS spectrometry revealed that the fractions of high molecular-size (F-1 > 100 kDa and F-2: 50-100 kDa) have a higher aromaticity compared to the fractions of small molecular-size (F-5: 5-10 kDa, F-6: < 5 kDa). In contrast, the potentiometric study showed different concentration of functional groups in the studied HS fractions. The reduction of Hg(II) by aquatic HS fractions at pH 5 proceeded in two steps (I, II) of slow first order kinetics (t(1/2) of I: 160 min, t(1/2) of II: 300 min) weakly influenced by the molecular-size, in contrast to the differing degree of Hg(II) reduction (F-5 > F-2 > > F-1 > F-3 > F-4 > > F-6). Accordingly, Hg(II) ions were preferably reduced by HS molecules having a relatively high ratio of phenolic/carboxylic groups and a small concentration of sulfur. From these results a complex 'competition' between reduction and complexation of mercury(II) by aquatic HS occurring in tropical rivers such as the Rio Negro can be suggested. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. This communication discusses the formation of doped nanobelts produced by a simple route. Tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanobelts were obtained by a carbothermal reduction method. The nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDX). The results show that the nanobelts have a cubic structure, are single crystalline and doped with tin and grow in the [400] direction.

Water-dispersed magnetite nanoparticle synthesis from iron(II) chloride in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-water solution at different DMSO-water ratios in alkaline medium was reported. TEM and XRD results suggest a single-crystal formation with mean particle size in the range 4-27 nm. Magnetic nanoparticles are formed by the oxidative hydrolysis reaction from green rust species that leads to FeOOH formation, followed by autocatalysis of the adsorbed available Fe(II) on the FeOOH surfaces. The available hydroxyl groups seem to be dependent on the DMSO-water ratio due to strong molecular interactions presented by the solvent mixture. Goethite phase on the magnetite surface was observed by XRD data only for sample synthesized in the absence of DMSO. In addition, cyclic voltammetry with carbon paste electroactive electrode (CV-CPEE) results reveal two reduction peaks near 0 and +400 mV associated with the presence of iron(III) in different chemical environments related to the surface composition of magnetite nanoparticles. The peak near +400 mV is related to a passivate thin layer surface such as goethite on the magnetite nanoparticle, assigned to the intensive hydrolysis reaction due to strong interactions between DMSO-water molecules in the initial solvent mixture that result in a hydroxyl group excess in the medium. Pure magnetite phase was only observed in the samples prepared at 30% (30W) and 80% (80W) water in DMSO in agreement with the structured molecular solvent cluster formation. The goethite phase present on the, magnetite nanoparticle surface like a thin passivate layer only was detectable using CV-CPEE, which is a very efficient, cheap, and powerful tool for surface characterization, and it is able to determine the passivate oxyhydroxide or oxide thin layer presence on the nanoparticle surface.

The electrochemical behavior of aniline protected by a nitrobenzene sulphonyl group in aqueous solution at a mercury electrode is reported. At pH < 10 the compound was reduced in a single well-defined step. Reduction of the nitro group involving a preceding protonation step was postulated. Two reduction steps are present at higher pH (pH > 11). Controlled potential electrolysis confirms that the reduction of the nitro group in a four-electron step to N-phenyl-4-hydroxylamine sulphonamide is always the preponderant process. ©1997 Soc. Bras. In cases of decorative and functional applications, chromium results in protection against wear and corrosion combined with chemical resistance and good lubricity. However, pressure to identify alternatives or to improve conventional chromium electroplating mechanical characteristics has increased in recent years, related to the reduction in the fatigue strength of the base material and to environmental requirements. The high efficiency and fluoride-free hard chromium electroplating is an improvement to the conventional process, considering chemical and physical final properties. One of the most interesting, environmentally safer and cleaner alternatives for the replacement of hard chrome plating is tungsten carbide thermal spray coating, applied by the high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) process. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of the tungsten carbide thermal spray coating applied by the HP/HVOF process and of the high efficiency and fluoride-free hard chromium electroplating (in the present paper called 'accelerated'), in comparison to the conventional hard chromium electroplating on the AISI 4340 high strength steel behaviour in fatigue, corrosion, and abrasive wear tests. The results showed that the coatings were damaging to the AISI 4340 steel behaviour when submitted to fatigue testing, with the tungsten carbide thermal spray coatings showing the better performance. Experimental data from abrasive wear tests were conclusive, indicating better results from the WC coating. Regarding corrosion by salt spray test, both coatings were completely corroded after 72 h exposure. Scanning electron microscopy technique (SEM) and optical microscopy were used to observe crack origin sites, thickness and adhesion in all the coatings and microcrack density in hard chromium electroplatings, to aid in the results analysis. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
