The Li-rich layered transition metal oxides (LLOs) Li2MnO3-LiMO2 (M=Mn, Co, Ni, etc.) have drawn considerable attention as cathode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. They generate large reversible capacities but the fundamental reaction mechanism and structural perturbations during cycling remain controversial. In the present thesis, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements were performed on Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O2 at different stage of charge during electrochemical oxidation/reduction. K-edge spectra of Co, Mn and Ni were recorded through a voltage range of 3.7-4.8V vs. Li/Li+, which consist of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Oxidation states during initial charge were discussed based on values from literature as well as XANES analysis. Information about bond distance, coordination number as well as corresponding Debye-Waller factor were extracted from Gnxas analysis of raw data in the EXAFS region. The possibility of oxygen participation in the initial charge was discussed. Co and Ni prove to take part in the oxidation/reduction process while Mn remain in the tetravalent state. The cathode material appears to retain good structural short-range order during charge-discharge. A resemblance of the pristine sample and sample 4 was discovered which was firstly reported for similar compounds.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful means of investigation of structural and electronic properties in condensed -matter physics. Analysis of the near edge part of the XAS spectrum, the so – called X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES), can typically provide the following information on the photoexcited atom: - Oxidation state and coordination environment. - Speciation of transition metal compounds. - Conduction band DOS projected on the excited atomic species (PDOS). Analysis of XANES spectra is greatly aided by simulations; in the most common scheme the multiple scattering framework is used with the muffin tin approximation for the scattering potential and the spectral simulation is based on a hypothetical, reference structure. This approach has the advantage of requiring relatively little computing power but in many cases the assumed structure is quite different from the actual system measured and the muffin tin approximation is not adequate for low symmetry structures or highly directional bonds. It is therefore very interesting and justified to develop alternative methods. In one approach, the spectral simulation is based on atomic coordinates obtained from a DFT (Density Functional Theory) optimized structure. In another approach, which is the object of this thesis, the XANES spectrum is calculated directly based on an ab – initio DFT calculation of the atomic and electronic structure. This method takes full advantage of the real many-electron final wavefunction that can be computed with DFT algorithms that include a core-hole in the absorbing atom to compute the final cross section. To calculate the many-electron final wavefunction the Projector Augmented Wave method (PAW) is used. In this scheme, the absorption cross section is written in function of several contributions as the many-electrons function of the finale state; it is calculated starting from pseudo-wavefunction and performing a reconstruction of the real-wavefunction by using a transform operator which contains some parameters, called partial waves and projector waves. The aim of my thesis is to apply and test the PAW methodology to the calculation of the XANES cross section. I have focused on iron and silicon structures and on some biological molecules target (myoglobin and cytochrome c). Finally other inorganic and biological systems could be taken into account for future applications of this methodology, which could become an important improvement with respect to the multiscattering approach.

The aim of this thesis was the synthesis and photophysical characterization of some new polysulfurated aromatic compounds: this class of molecules can offer intriguing properties, potentially useful for the construction of new materials for optoelectronic devices. Two main families of compounds have been synthesized: the first is represented by a series of small molecular asterisks, with peripheral aromatic units, showing luminescence in solid phase or in highly rigid conditions. All compounds with peripheral substituents display an AIE behavior (Aggregation Induced Emission) with radiative deactivation of the triplet states. Taking inspiration from these smaller asterisks, a larger molecule with the same geometry has been designed, decorated with terpyridyl moieties as the outermost units: this compound shows great affinity for the coordination of several transition metal ions, changing luminescence properties after the interaction with zinc ions. With the same intentions, a tetrasulfurated pyrene-core molecule with terpyridyl external units has been synthesized and isolated: this ligand exhibits good coordination capabilities towards transition metal ions, giving rise to luminescent nanoaggregates upon addition of zinc(II), characterized by DLS and AFM microscopy. In addition a NIR emission is recorded after coordination of neodymium(III), showing evidence of an intramolecular energy transfer process.

Linear and macrocyclic nitrogen ligands have been found wide application during the years. Nitrogen has a much strong association with transition-metal ions because the electron pair is partucularly available for complexing purposes. We started our investigation with the synthesis of new chiral perazamacrocycles containing four pyrrole rings. This ligand was synthesized by the [2+2]condensation of (R,R)-diaminocyclohexane and dipirranedialdehydes and was tested, after a complexation with Cu(OAc)2, in Henry reactions. The best yields (96%) and higher ee’s (96%) were obtained when the meso-substituent on the dipyrrandialdehyde was a methyl group. The positive influence of the pyrrole-containing macrocyclic structure on the efficiency/enantioselectivity of the catalytic system was demonstrated by comparison with the Henry reactions performed using analogous ligands. Henry product was obtain in good yield but only 73% of ee, when the dialdehyde unit was replaced by a triheteroaromatic dialdehye (furan-pyrrol-furan). Another well known macrocyclic ligand is calix[4]pyrrole. We decided to investigate, in collaboration with Neier’s group, the metal-coordinating properties of calix[2]pyrrole[2]pyrrolidine compounds obtained by the reduction of calix[4]pyrrole. We focused our attention on the reduction conditions, and tested different Pd supported (charcoal, grafite) catalysts at different condition. Concerning the synthesis of linear polyamine ligands. We focused our attention to the synthesis of 2-heteroaryl- and 2,5-diheteroarylpyrrolidines. The reductive amination reaction of diarylketones and aryl-substitutedketo-aldehydes with different chiral amines was exploited to prepare a small library of diastereo-enriched substituted pyrrolidines. We have also described a new synthetic route to 1,2-disubstituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrrole[1,2-a]pyrazines, which involves the diastereoselective addition of Grignard reagents to chiral oxazolidines. The best diastereoselectivity (98:2) was dependent on the nature of both the chiral auxiliary, (S)-1-phenylglycinol, and the nature of the organometallic reagent (MeMgBr).

(M=Fe(II), Co(III), Mo(IV), Ru(II)) undrndodecanukleare Komplexe vom Typ [(L2Fe(III)NC)5Fe(II)CNCo(III)(CNFe(III)L2)5]4+. L2= Bis(R2,3,4 -salicylidenaminoalkyl-R1-amin. Thermischen Spincrossover und LIESST zeigen [3,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/Co]; [3,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/Ru]; [3,3/N-H/sal-H/Fe/Mo]; [3,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/W]; FeII(pmea)(SCN)2; thermischen Spinübergang zeigt [2,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/Fe-Co]. The specific energy of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is today 200 Wh/kg, a value not sufficient to power fully electric vehicles with a driving range of 400 km which requires a battery pack of 90 kWh. To deliver such energy the battery weight should be higher than 400 kg and the corresponding increase of vehicle mass would narrow the driving range to 280 km. Two main strategies are pursued to improve the energy of the rechargeable lithium batteries up to the transportation targets. The first is the increase of LIBs working voltage by using high-voltage cathode materials. The second is the increase of battery capacity by the development of a cell chemistry where oxygen redox reaction (ORR) occurs at the cathode and metal lithium is the anode (Li/O2 battery). This PhD work is focused on the development of high-voltage safe cathodes for LIBs, and on the investigation of the feasibility of Li/O2 battery operating with ionic liquid(IL)-based electrolytes. The use of LiMn1-xFexPO4 as high-voltage cathode material is discussed. Synthesis and electrochemical tests of three different phosphates, more safe cathode materials than transition metal oxides, are reported. The feasibility of Li/O2 battery operating in IL-based electrolytes is also discussed. Three aspects have been investigated: basic aspects of ORR, synthesis and characterization of porous carbons as positive electrode materials and study of limiting factors to the electrode capacity and cycle-life. Regarding LIBs, the findings on LiMnPO4 prepared by soluble precursors demonstrate that a good performing Mn-based olivine is viable without the coexistence of iron. Regarding Li/O2 battery, the oxygen diffusion coefficient and concentration values in different ILs were obtained. This work highlighted that the O2 mass transport limits the Li/O2 capacity at high currents; it gave indications on how to increase battery capacity by using a flow-cell and a porous carbon as cathode.

Topic of this thesis is the development of experiments behind the gas-filled separator TASCA(TransActinide Separator and Chemistry Apparatus) to study the chemical properties of the transactinide elements.rnIn the first part of the thesis, the electrodepositions of short-lived isotopes of ruthenium and osmium on gold electrodes were studied as model experiments for hassium. From literature it is known that the deposition potential of single atoms differs significantly from the potential predicted by the Nernst equation. This shift of the potential depends on the adsorption enthalpy of therndeposited element on the electrode material. If the adsorption on the electrode-material is favoured over the adsorption on a surface made of the same element as the deposited atom, the electrode potential is shifted to higher potentials. This phenomenon is called underpotential deposition.rnPossibilities to automatize an electro chemistry experiment behind the gas-filled separator were explored for later studies with transactinide elements.rnThe second part of this thesis is about the in-situ synthesis of transition-metal-carbonyl complexes with nuclear reaction products. Fission products of uranium-235 and californium-249 were produced at the TRIGA Mainz reactor and thermalized in a carbon-monoxide containing atmosphere. The formed volatile metal-carbonyl complexes could be transported in a gas-stream.rnFurthermore, short-lived isotopes of tungsten, rhenium, osmium, and iridium were synthesised at the linear accelerator UNILAC at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. The recoiling fusion products were separated from the primary beam and the transfer products in the gas-filled separator TASCA. The fusion products were stopped in the focal plane of TASCA in a recoil transfer chamber. This chamber contained a carbon-monoxide – helium gas mixture. The formed metal-carbonyl complexes could be transported in a gas stream to various experimental setups. All synthesised carbonyl complexes were identified by nuclear decay spectroscopy. Some complexes were studied with isothermal chromatography or thermochromatography methods. The chromatograms were compared with Monte Carlo Simulations to determine the adsorption enthalpyrnon silicon dioxide and on gold. These simulations based on existing codes, that were modified for the different geometries of the chromatography channels. All observed adsorption enthalpies (on silcon oxide as well as on gold) are typical for physisorption. Additionally, the thermalstability of some of the carbonyl complexes was studied. This showed that at temperatures above 200 °C therncomplexes start to decompose.rnIt was demonstrated that carbonyl-complex chemistry is a suitable method to study rutherfordium, dubnium, seaborgium, bohrium, hassium, and meitnerium. Until now, only very simple, thermally stable compounds have been synthesized in the gas-phase chemistry of the transactindes. With the synthesis of transactinide-carbonyl complexes a new compound class would be discovered. Transactinide chemistry would reach the border between inorganic and metallorganic chemistry.rnFurthermore, the in-situ synthesised carbonyl complexes would allow nuclear spectroscopy studies under low background conditions making use of chemically prepared samples.

In the following chapter, rnwe study the synthesis of these monodiperse nanoparticles with the similar iron precursorrn(iron pentacarbonyl) and different transition metal precursors such as metalrnacetate/acetylacetonate/formate precursors in the presence of various surfactants and solvents.rnAccording to their decomposition temperatures and reducing condition, a specific and suitablernroute was designed for the formation of Metal@Metal oxide or MFe2O4 nanoparticlesrn(Metal/M=transition metal).rnOne of the key purposes in the formation of nanocrystals is the development of syntheticrnpathways for designing and controlling the composition, shape and size of predictedrnnanostructures. The ability to arrange different nanosized domains of metallic and magneticrnmaterials into a single heterodimer nanostructure offers an interesting direction to engineerrnthem with multiple functionalities or enhanced properties of one domain. The presence andrnrole of surfactants and solvents in these reactions result in a variety of nanocrystal shapes. Therncrystalline phase, the growth rate and the orientation of growth parameters along certainrndirections of these structures can be chemically modulated by using suitable surfactants. In allrnnovel reported heterodimer nanostructures in this thesis, initially metals were preformed andrnthen by the injection of iron precursor in appropriate temperature, iron oxide nanoparticlesrnwere started to nucleate on the top or over the surfaces of metal nanoparticles. Ternary phasesrnof spherical CuxFe3-xO4 and CoFe2O4 ferrites nanoparticles were designed to synthesis just byrnlittle difference in diffusion step with the formation of mentioned phase separated heterodimerrnnanoparticles. In order to use these magnetic nanoparticles in biomedical and catalysisrnapplications, they should be transferred into the water phase solution, therefore they werernfunctionalized by a multifunctional polymeric ligand. These functionalized nanoparticles werernstable against aggregation and precipitation in aqueous media for a long time. Magneticrnresonance imaging and catalytic reactivities are two promising applications which have beenrnutilized for these magnetic nanoparticles in this thesis.rnThis synthetic method explained in the following chapters can be extended to the synthesis ofrnother heterostructured nanomaterials such as Ni@MnO or M@M@iron oxide (M=transitionrnmetal) or to use these multidomain particles as building blocks for higher order structures.

Sulfate aerosol plays an important but uncertain role in cloud formation and radiative forcing of the climate, and is also important for acid deposition and human health. The oxidation of SO2 to sulfate is a key reaction in determining the impact of sulfate in the environment through its effect on aerosol size distribution and composition. This thesis presents a laboratory investigation of sulfur isotope fractionation during SO2 oxidation by the most important gas-phase and heterogeneous pathways occurring in the atmosphere. The fractionation factors are then used to examine the role of sulfate formation in cloud processing of aerosol particles during the HCCT campaign in Thuringia, central Germany. The fractionation factor for the oxidation of SO2 by ·OH radicals was measured by reacting SO2 gas, with a known initial isotopic composition, with ·OH radicals generated from the photolysis of water at -25, 0, 19 and 40°C (Chapter 2). The product sulfate and the residual SO2 were collected as BaSO4 and the sulfur isotopic compositions measured with the Cameca NanoSIMS 50. The measured fractionation factor for 34S/32S during gas phase oxidation is αOH = (1.0089 ± 0.0007) − ((4 ± 5) × 10−5 )T (°C). Fractionation during oxidation by major aqueous pathways was measured by bubbling the SO2 gas through a solution of H2 O2

In recent years, an increasing attention has been given to the optimization of the performances of new supramolecular systems, as antennas for light collection. In such background, the aim of this thesis was the study of multichromophoric architectures capable of performing such basic action. A synthetic antenna should consist of a structure with large UV-Vis absorption cross-section, panchromatic absorption, fixed orientation of the components and suitable energy gradients between them, in order to funnel absorbed energy towards a specific site, through fast energy-transfer processes. Among the systems investigated in this thesis, three suitable classes of compounds can be identified: 1) transition metal-based multichromophoric arrays, as models for antenna construction, 2) free-base trans-A2B-phenylcorroles, as self-assembling systems to make effective mimics of the photosynthetic system, and 3) a natural harvester, the Photosystem I, immobilized on the photoanode of a solar-to-fuel conversion device. The discussion starts with the description of the photophysical properties of dinuclear quinonoid organometallic systems, able to fulfil some of the above mentioned absorption requirements, displaying in some cases panchromatic absorption. The investigation is extended to the efficient energy transfer processes occurring in supramolecular architectures, suitably organized around rigid organic scaffolds, such as spiro-bifluorene and triptycene. Furthermore, the photophysical characterization of three trans-A2B-phenylcorroles with different substituents on the meso-phenyl ring is introduced, revealing the tendency of such macrocycles to self-organize into dimers, by mimicking natural self-aggregates antenna systems. In the end, the photophysical analysis moved towards the natural super-complex PSI-LHCI, immobilized on the hematite surface of the photoanode of a bio-hybrid dye-sensitized solar cell. The importance of the entire work is related to the need for a deep understanding of the energy transfer mechanisms occurring in supramolecules, to gain insights and improve the strategies for governing the directionality of the energy flow in the construction of well-performing antenna systems.

This thesis details the development of quantum chemical methods for the accurate theoretical description of molecular systems with a complicated electronic structure. In simple cases, a single Slater determinant, in which the electrons occupy a number of energetically lowest molecular orbitals, offers a qualitatively correct model. The widely used coupled-cluster method CCSD(T) efficiently includes electron correlation effects starting from this determinant and provides reaction energies in error by only a few kJ/mol. However, the method often fails when several electronic configurations are important, as, for instance, in the course of many chemical reactions or in transition metal compounds. Internally contracted multireference coupled-cluster methods (ic-MRCC methods) cure this deficiency by using a linear combination of determinants as a reference function. Despite their theoretical elegance, the ic-MRCC equations involve thousands of terms and are therefore derived by the computer. Calculations of energy surfaces of BeH2, HF, LiF, H2O, N2 and Be3 unveil the theory's high accuracy compared to other approaches and the quality of various hierarchies of approximations. New theoretical advances include size-extensive techniques for removing linear dependencies in the ic-MRCC equations and a multireference analog of CCSD(T). Applications of the latter method to O3, Ni2O2, benzynes, C6H7NO and Cr2 underscore its potential to become a new standard method in quantum chemistry.
