There are many industrial advantages of using mechanical multi-oxides mixtures to obtain ceramic parts by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). This is mainly because one could avoid complex chemical synthesis routes to achieve a desirable composition. However, EPD of these suspensions is not an easy task as well since many different surfaces are present, leading to unexpected suspension behavior. The particles surface potentials and interactions can, however, be predicted by an extension of the DLVO theory. Using this theory, one can control the suspension properties and particles distribution. The objective of this work was to apply the colloidal chemistry theories to promote the formation of a heterocoagulation between ZrO(2) and Y(2)O(3) particles in ethanol suspension to achieve a suitable condition for EPD. After identifying a condition where those particles had opposite surface charges and adequate relative sizes, heterocoagulation was observed at operational pH 7.5, generating an organized agglomerate with ZrO(2) particles surrounding Y(2)O(3), with a net zeta potential of -16.6 mV. Since the agglomerates were stable, EPD could be carried out and homogeneous deposits were obtained. The deposited bodies were sintered at 1600 A degrees C for 4 h and partially stabilized ZrO(2) could be obtained without traces of Y(2)O(3) second phases.

The salt-induced precipitation of lysozyme from aqueous solutions was studied at 25 degrees C and various pH values by cloud-point investigations, precipitation experiments (analysing the compositions of the coexisting phases) and microscopic investigations of the precipitates. Sodium sulphate as well as ammonium sulphate were used to induce the precipitation. The experimental results are discussed and used to develop a scheme of the phase equilibrium in water-rich aqueous solutions of lysozyme and either Na2SO4 or (NH4)(2)SO4. The present work reports the thermal annealing process, the number of layer and electrochemical process effect in the optical response quality of Bragg and microcavity devices that were applied as organic solvent sensors. These devices have been obtained by using porous silicon (PS) technology. The optical characterization of the Bragg reflector, before annealing, showed a broad photonic band-gap structure with blue shifted and narrowed after annealing process. The electrochemical process used to obtain the PS-based device imposes the limit in the number of layers because of the chemical dissolution effect. The interface roughness minimizations in the devices have been achieved by using the double electrochemical cell setup. The microcavity devices showed to have a good sensibility for organic solvent detection. The thermal annealed device showed better sensibility feature and this result was attributed to passivation of the surface devices. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Morphoanatomic aspects of Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae) leaves. Psidium guajava L. is a perennial shrub, native of tropical America used in Latin American traditional medicine as antimicrobial, antidiarrheic, and in the treatment of diabetes. The morphoanatomical characteristics and histochemistry of the crude drug, whole or powdered, used in pharmaceutical formulations were presented. The main diagnostic characters for the identification of its leaves in the present paper were: venation, trichomes type, number of layers of epidermal cells, mesophyll type and location/type of crystals of calcium oxalate. The morphoanatomical analysis has been proven to be a rapid method for quality control of the crude drug used for medicinal purposes.

The copper-catalyzed dimerization of alkynyltrifluoroborates proceeds readily with good yields. The homo-coupling reaction can be effected in DMSO, in the open air, using Cu(OAc)(2) as catalyst in the absence of any other additives. A variety of functional groups are tolerated. An exhaustive analysis of the crystallisation behaviour of palm oil was performed using low-resolution magnetic pulsed nuclear resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, polarised light microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The aim of this study was to characterise the changes induced in the crystallisation of palm oil by the addition of two different levels of tripalmitin and two different types of monoacylglycerols. The addition of monoacylglycerols led to the formation of a large number of crystallisation nuclei without changing the final solids content, accelerating the process of crystal formation, leading to the formation of smaller crystals than those found in the refined palm oil. Higher levels of tripalmitin produced crystals with larger dimensions, reducing the induction period and resulted in a higher level of solids at the end of the crystallisation period. The addition of monoacylglycerols and tripalmitin induced the formation of a polymorphic beta-form. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study was developed a new nano drug delivery system (NDDS) based on association of biodegradable surfactants with biocompatible magnetic fluid of maguemita citrate derivative. This formulation consists in a magnetic emulsion with nanostructured colloidal particles. Preliminary in vitro experiments showed that the formulation presents a great potential for synergic application in the topical release of photosensitizer drug (PS) and excellent target tissue properties in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) combined with hyperthermia (HPT) protocols. The physical chemistry characterization and in vitro assays were carried out by Zn(II) Phtalocyanine (ZnPc) photosensitizer incorporated into NDDS in the absence and the presence of magnetic fluid, showed good results and high biocompatibility. In vitro experiments were accomplished by tape-stripping protocols for quanti. cation of drug association with different skin tissue layers. This technique is a classical method for analyses of drug release in stratum corneum and epidermis+ dermis skin layers. The NDDS formulations were applied directly in pig skin (tissue model) fixed in the cell`s Franz device with receptor medium container with a PBS/EtOH 20% solution (10mM, pH 7.4) at 37 degrees C. After 12 h of topical administration stratum corneum was removed from fifty tapes and the ZnPc retained was evaluated by solvent extraction in dimetil-sulphoxide under ultrasonic bath. These results indicated that magnetic nanoemulsion (MNE) increase the drug release on the deeper skin layers when compared with classical formulation in the absence of magnetic particles. This could be related with the increase of biocompatibility of NDDS due to the great affinity for the polar extracelullar matrix in the skin and also for the increase in the drug partition inside of corneocites wall. The purpose of this study was to develop a lyotropic liquid crystalline formulation using the emulsifier vitamin E TPGS and evaluate its behavior after incorporation of a flavonoid, quercetin. The physical (macro and microscopic), chemical (determination of quercetin content by the HPLC method) and functional (determination of quercetin antioxidant activity by DPPH center dot assay) stability of the lamellar liquid crystalline formulation containing flavonoid was evaluated when stored at 4+/-2 degrees C; 30+/-2 degrees C/70+/-5% RH (relative humidity) and 40+/-2 degrees C/70+/-5% RH during 12 months. The lamellar liquid crystalline structure of the formulation was maintained during the experiment, however chemical and functional stability results showed a great influence of the storage period in all conditions tested. A significant decrease in quercetin content (approximately 40%) was detected during the first month of storage and a similar significant loss in antioxidant activity was detected after 6 months. The remaining flavonoid content was unchanged during the final 6 months of the experimental period. The results suggest possible interactions between quercetin and the liquid crystalline formulation, which could inhibit or reduce the quercetin activity incorporated in the system. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that incorporation of quercetin (1%) did not affect the liquid crystalline structure composed of vitamin E TPGS/IPM/PG-H2O (1:1) at 63.75/21.25/15 (w/w/w). Nevertheless, of the total quercetin incorporated in the system only 60% was free to act as an antioxidant.

In this work we evaluated the photophysical and in vitro properties of Foscan (R), a second-generation photosensitizer drug (PS) widely used in systemic clinical protocols for cancer therapy based on Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). We employed biodegradable nanoemulsions (NE) as a colloidal vehicle of the oil/water (o/w) type focusing in topical administration of Foscan (R) and other photosensitizer drugs. This formulation was obtained and stabilized by the methodology described by Tabosa do Egito et al.,(30) based on the mixture of two phases: an aqueous solution and an organic medium consisting of nonionic surfactants and oil. The photodynamic potential of the drug incorporated into the NE was studied by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. We also analyzed the in vitro biological behavior carried out in mimetic biological environment protocols based on the animal model. After topical application in a skin animal model, we evaluated the Foscan (R)/NE diffusion flux into the skin layers (stratum corneum and epidermis + dermis) by classical procedures using Franz Diffusion cells. Our results showed that the photophysical properties of PS were maintained after its incorporation into the NE when compared with homogeneous organic medium. The in vitro assays enabled the determination of an adequate profile for the interaction of this system in the different skin layers, with an ideal time lag of 6 h after topical administration in the skin model. The Foscan (R) diffusion flux (J) was increased when this PS was incorporated into the NE, if compared with its flux in physiological medium. These parameters demonstrated that the NE can be potentially applied as a drug delivery system (DDS) for Foscan (R) in both in vitro and in vivo assays, as well as in future clinical applications involving topical skin cancer PDT.

Emulsions containing liquid crystals present interesting properties and advantages such as the skin moisturize increase, active release modulation, and emulsion stabilization. In this work, emulsions containing annatto, coffee and tea tree oils, and nonionic surfactants were developed. The HLB method was used for selection of surfactants. The required HLB value was established (9.0). Liquid crystals were attained when used the surfactant mixture Ceteareth-5 and Steareth-2 and identified as lamellar. The emulsions showed pseudoplastic behavior and tixotropy. The ternary diagram was useful in the selection of the proportion of surfactant and oily phase considering skin compatibility and liquid crystal presence.

This work evaluates the feasibility of the draft-tube spouted bed for drying of herbal extract. Drying runs were carried out according to a central composite design in a conical-cylindrical draft-tube spouted bed. The variables studied were the percentage of the drying aid (ADJ), the drying gas flow rate relative to gas flow at minimum spouting (Q/Q(ms)), and the flow rate of extract fed to the system relative to the spouting gas flow rate W(s)/W(g)). Colloidal silicon dioxide was the drying aid used in order to improve drying performance. Statistical analysis of the effects of processing parameters on product recovery, product accumulation in the bed, and product properties permitted the identification of parameters presenting significant effects on drying. Optimized drying conditions were related to experimental parameters as follow: high levels of the percentage of drying adjuvant (ADJ), high airflow rate relative to minimum spouting (Q/Q(ms)), and low values of the feed flow rate of the extract relative to the gas flow rate (W(s)/W(g)).

An ultrasound-assisted synthesis of symmetrical 1,3-diyne compounds with electron-withdrawing or donating substituents is described and illustrated by the palladium-catalyzed homocoupling reaction of n-butyl alkynyltellurides. This procedure offers easy access to 1,3-diynes in very short reaction times, and the products are achieved in good to excellent yields. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Strong photoluminescent emission has been obtained from 3 nm PbS nanocrystals in aqueous colloidal solution, following treatment with CdS precursors. The observed emission can extend across the entire visible spectrum and usually includes a peak near 1.95 eV. We show that much of the visible emission results from absorption by higher-lying excited states above 3.0 eV with subsequent relaxation to and emission from states lying above the observed band-edge of the PbS nanocrystals. The fluorescent lifetimes for this emission are in the nanosecond regime, characteristic of exciton recombination.

Effective surface passivation of lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals (NCs) in an aqueous colloidal solution has been achieved following treatment with CdS precursors. The resultant photoluminescent emission displays two distinct components, one originating from the absorption band edge and the other from above the absorption band edge. We show that both of these components are strongly polarized but display distinctly different behaviours. The polarization arising from the band edge shows little dependence on the excitation energy while the polarization of the above-band-edge component is strongly dependent on the excitation energy. In addition, time-resolved polarization spectroscopy reveals that the above-band-edge polarization is restricted to the first couple of nanoseconds, while the band edge polarization is nearly constant over hundreds of nanoseconds. We recognize an incompatibility between the two different polarization behaviours, which enables us to identify two distinct types of surface-passivated PbS NC.

Colloidal PbS nanocrystals over-coated with CdS are prepared in aqueous solutions and exhibit strong photoluminescence with two distinct peaks in the visible regime. A photoluminescence peak is observed at 640 nm, which is attributed to the band edge recombination in the PbS nanocrystals, and another peak at 510 nm, which is above the band edge of the PbS nanocrystals. The two PL peaks are isolated by extracting separate species of nanocrystal based upon their surface morphology. Micro-emulsions of hexane:PVA are used to remove the species containing the PL peak at 640 nm from the solution, leaving a singular peak at 510 nm. We show conclusively that the double-peaked structure observed in the photoluminescence spectra of PbS nanocrystals over-coated with CdS is due to the presence of two distinctly different nanocrystal species.
