Aim Habitat loss and climate change are two major drivers of biological diversity. Here we quantify how deforestation has already changed, and how future climate scenarios may change, environmental conditions within the highly disturbed Atlantic forests of Brazil. We also examine how environmental conditions have been altered within the range of selected bird species. Location Atlantic forests of south-eastern Brazil. Methods The historical distribution of 21 bird species was estimated using Maxent. After superimposing the present-day forest cover, we examined the environmental niches hypothesized to be occupied by these birds pre- and post-deforestation using environmental niche factor analysis (ENFA). ENFA was also used to compare conditions in the entire Atlantic forest ecosystem pre- and post-deforestation. The relative influence of land use and climate change on environmental conditions was examined using analysis of similarity and principal components analysis. Results Deforestation in the region has resulted in a decrease in suitable habitat of between 78% and 93% for the Atlantic forest birds included here. Further, Atlantic forest birds today experience generally wetter and less seasonal forest environments than they did historically. Models of future environmental conditions within forest remnants suggest generally warmer conditions and lower annual variation in rainfall due to greater precipitation in the driest quarter of the year. We found that deforestation resulted in a greater divergence of environmental conditions within Atlantic forests than that predicted by climate change. Main conclusions The changes in environmental conditions that have occurred with large-scale deforestation suggest that selective regimes may have shifted and, as a consequence, spatial patterns of intra-specific variation in morphology, behaviour and genes have probably been altered. Although the observed shifts in available environmental conditions resulting from deforestation are greater than those predicted by climate change, the latter will result in novel environments that exceed temperatures in any present-day climates and may lead to biotic attrition unless organisms can adapt to these warmer conditions. Conserving intra-specific diversity over the long term will require considering both how changes in the recent past have influenced contemporary populations and the impact of future environmental change.

Although angiotensin II-induced venoconstriction has been demonstrated in the rat vena cava and femoral vein, the angiotensin II receptor subtypes (AT(1) or AT(2)) that mediate this phenomenon have not been precisely characterized. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize the pharmacological receptors involved in the angiotensin II-induced constriction of rat venae cavae and femoral veins, as well as the opposing effects exerted by locally produced prostanoids and NO upon induction of these vasomotor responses. The obtained results suggest that both AT(1) and AT(2) angiotensin II receptors are expressed in both veins. Angiotensin II concentration-response curves were shifted toward the right by losartan but not by PD 123319 in both the vena cava and femoral vein. Moreover, it was observed that both 10(-5) M indomethacin and 10(-4) M L-NAME improve the angiotensin II responses in the vena cava and femoral vein. In conclusion, in the rat vena cava and femoral vein, angiotensin II stimulates AT(1) but not AT(2) to induce venoconstriction, which is blunted by vasodilator prostanoids and NO. The influence of visual stimuli intensity on manual reaction time (RT) was investigated under two different attentional settings: high (Experiment 1) and low (Experiment 2) stimulus location predictability. These two experiments were also run under both binocular and monocular viewing conditions. We observed that RT decreased as stimulus intensity increased. It also decreased as the viewing condition was changed from monocular to binocular as well as the location predictability shifted from low to high. A significant interaction was found between stimulus intensity and viewing condition, but no interaction was observed between neither of these factors and location predictability. These findings support the idea that the stimulus intensity effect arises from purely sensory, pre-attentive mechanisms rather than deriving from more efficient attentional capture. Electronic properties of a methane-water solution were investigated by a sequential quantum mechanical/molecular dynamics approach. Upon hydration methane acquires an induced dipole moment of similar to 0.5 +/- 0.2 D. This is related to polarisation effects and to weak methane-water hydrogen bond interactions. From gas phase to solution, the first vertical excitation and ionisation energies of methane are red-shifted by 0.45 +/- 0.25 and 0.87 +/- 0.40 eV, respectively. We also report results for the dynamic polarisability of methane in water. In comparison with water, no difference was found for the average monomeric dipole moment of water molecules in close interaction with methane. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Magnetic properties of nanocrystalline NiFe(2)O(4) spinel mechanically processed for 350 h have been studied using temperature dependent from both zero-field and in-field (57)Fe Mossbauer spectrometry and magnetization measurements. The hyperfine structure allows us to distinguish two main magnetic contributions: one attributed to the crystalline grain core, which has magnetic properties similar to the NiFe(2)O(4) spinel-like structure (n-NiFe(2)O(4)) and the other one due to the disordered grain boundary region, which presents topological and chemical disorder features(d-NiFe(2)O(4)). Mossbauer spectrometry determines a large fraction for the d-NiFe(2)O(4) region(62% of total area) and also suggests a speromagnet-like structure for it. Under applied magnetic field, the n-NiFe(2)O(4) spins are canted with angle dependent on the applied field magnitude. Mossbauer data also show that even under 120 kOe no magnetic saturation is observed for the two magnetic phases. In addition, the hysteresis loops, recorded for scan field of 50 kOe, are shifted in both field and magnetization axes, for temperatures below about 50 K. The hysteresis loop shifts may be due to two main contributions: the exchange bias field at the d-NiFe(2)O(4)/n-NiFe(2)O(4) interfaces and the minor loop effect caused by a high magnetic anisotropy of the d-NiFe(2)O(4) phase. It has also been shown that the spin configuration of the spin-glass like phase is modified by the consecutive field cycles, consequently the n-NiFe(2)O(4)/d-NiFe(2)O(4) magnetic interaction is also affected in this process. Aquatic macrophytes Salvinia auriculata, Pistia stratiotes and Eichhornia crassipes were chosen to investigate the Cr(VI) reduced by root-based biosorption in a chromium uptake experiment, using a high-resolution XRF technique. These plants were grown in hydroponics medium supplied with non-toxic Cr concentrations during a 27-day metal uptake experiment. The high-resolution Cr-K beta fluorescence spectra for dried root tissues and Cr reference material (100% Cr, Cr(2)O(3), and CrO(3)) were measured using an XRF spectrometer. For all species of aquatic plant treated with Cr(VI), the energy of the Cr-K beta(2,5) line was shifted around 8 eV below the same spectral line identified for the Cr(VI) reference, but it was also near to the line identified for the Cr(III) reference. Moreover, there was a lack of the strong Cr-K beta"" line assigned to the Cr(VI) reference material within the Cr(VI)-treated plant spectra, suggesting the reduction of Cr(VI) for other less toxic oxidation states of Cr. As all Cr-K beta spectra of root tissue species were compared, the peak energies and lineshape patterns of the Cr-K beta(2,5) line are coincident for the same aquatic plant species, when they were treated with Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Based on the experimental evidence, the Cr(VI) reduction process has happened during metal biosorption by these plants. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The topology of real-world complex networks, such as in transportation and communication, is always changing with time. Such changes can arise not only as a natural consequence of their growth, but also due to major modi. cations in their intrinsic organization. For instance, the network of transportation routes between cities and towns ( hence locations) of a given country undergo a major change with the progressive implementation of commercial air transportation. While the locations could be originally interconnected through highways ( paths, giving rise to geographical networks), transportation between those sites progressively shifted or was complemented by air transportation, with scale free characteristics. In the present work we introduce the path-star transformation ( in its uniform and preferential versions) as a means to model such network transformations where paths give rise to stars of connectivity. It is also shown, through optimal multivariate statistical methods (i.e. canonical projections and maximum likelihood classification) that while the US highways network adheres closely to a geographical network model, its path-star transformation yields a network whose topological properties closely resembles those of the respective airport transportation network.

Bismuth germanate glasses are interesting materials due to their physical properties and their unique structural characteristics caused by the coordination changes of bismuth and germanium atoms. Glasses of the bismuth germanate system were prepared by melting/molding method and were investigated concerning their thermal and structural properties. The structural analysis of the samples was carried out by micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes. It was observed that the glass structure is formed basically by GeO(4) tetrahedral units also having the formation of the GeO(6) octahedral units. BiO(2) was considered a network former by observing the presence of octahedral BiO(6) and pyramidal BiO(3) groups in the local structure of the samples. An absorption band observed at 1103 cm(-1) in the IR spectrum of the undoped glass was attributed to the Bi-O-Ge and/or Bi-O-Bi linkage vibration. The said band shifted to lower wavenumbers after the CeO(2) addition thus reflecting changes in the glass network. Cerium oxide was an efficient oxidant agent to prevent the darkening of the glasses which was probably associated to the reduction of Bi ions. However, CeO(2) was incorporated as a local network modifier in the glass structure even at concentrations of 0.2 mol%. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We address two problems with the structure and representation theory of finite W-algebras associated with general linear Lie algebras. Finite W-algebras can be defined using either Kostant`s Whittaker modules or a quantum Hamiltonian reduction. Our first main result is a proof of the Gelfand-Kirillov conjecture for the skew fields of fractions of finite W-algebras. The second main result is a parameterization of finite families of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules using Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra. As a corollary, we obtain a complete classification of generic irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for finite W-algebras. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Photochemical and photophysical properties of 1-(2-quinolyl)-2-naphthol (2QN) in water and organic solvents, as well in glassy media were studied to investigate the occurrence of intramolecular excited state prototropic reactions between the naphthol and quinoline rings. Spectral data show the two chromophores apparently behaving independently. However, in acid aqueous media or in low polarity solvents a new electronic transition red shifted band with respect to that of the parent compounds assigned to an intramolecular H-bond and to a quinoid form, respectively, shows up. Model calculations and R-X data lend support to a minimum energy conformer having a dihedral angle of similar to 39 degrees between the two groups. Singlet excited state properties (S-1) show a high suppressive effect of one ring over the other, resulting in very low emission yields at room temperature. The occurrence of excited state intramolecular proton transfer is observed in water (zwitter ion form) and in low polarity media (quinoid form) and originates from a previously CT H-bonded state. Phosphorescence data allowed a reasonable description of the electronic states of 2QN. In addition two new derivatives were prepared having the N atom blocked by methylation and both the N and O groups blocked by a CH2 bridge. The spectral data of these two compounds confirmed the attributions made for 2QN. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work deals with the covalent functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with phenosafranine (PS) and Nile Blue (NB) dyes. These dyes can act as photosensitizers in energy and electron transfer reactions, with a potential to be applied in photodynamic therapy. Several changes in the characteristic Raman vibrational features of the dyes suggest that a covalent modification of the nanotubes with the organic dyes occurs. Specifically, the vibrational modes assigned to the NH(2) moieties of the dyes are seen to disappear in the SWNT-dye nanocomposites, corroborating the bond formation between amine groups in the dyes and carboxyl groups in the oxidized nanotubes. The X-ray absorption (XANES) data also show, that the intense band at 398.6 eV attributed to 1s -> 2p pi* transition of the nitrogen of the aromatic PS ring, is shifted due to the bonding with the carbonic structure of the SWNTs. The cytotoxicity data of dyes-modified SWNT composites in the presence and absence of light shows that the SWNT-NB (4 mu g/mL) composite presents a good photodynamic effect, namely a low toxicity in the dark, higher toxicity in the presence of light and also a reduced dye photobleaching by auto-oxidation. The heteroaggregation behavior between a new class of nonplanar cationic beta-octabrominated meso-alkylpyridinium zinc(II)-porphyrins (beta-Br(8)(ZnP)) and anionic tetrasulfonated metallophthalocyanines (MTSPc, M = Ni(II) and Cu(II)) has been studied by UV-Vis electronic spectroscopy, in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution. The heteroaggregate stoichiometry and the association constants were determined by means of Job plots. Dimers and unexpected trimers, taking into account the existence of axially coordinated DMSO molecules to the central metal in both beta-Br(8)(ZnP) and MTSPc complexes, are formed in solution. The spectroscopic properties of the heteroaggregates are markedly different from those observed in the correspondent planar cationic derivatives, the heteroaggregates showing major changes predominantly in the beta-Br(8)(ZnP) Soret band region and minor effects in the MTSPc Q bands. The observed changes in the Soret band region (red/blue shifts, decrease in the absorption intensities) depend on the nature of the alkyl substituent attached to the meso-pyridinium group. The greater versatility of the nonplanar porphyrins accommodating the meso-substituents in out-of-plane and in-plane conformations is proposed to explain the observed stoichiometries and the differences on the heteroaggregates spectroscopic properties for each beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compound. The likely conformations assumed by the meso-substituents in these beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compounds and its spectroscopic characteristics are in accordance with the participation of the substituents as the main factor on the extent of the observed red-shifted spectra in nonplanar porphyrins. The obtained association constants (K(IP)) for the dimers and trimers are lower than those previously found for the similar planar cationic porphyrin systems, due to the lack of extensive pi-pi interactions and to the less effective approximation between the ionic groups, resulting in loosened heteroaggregates, particularly for the trimeric systems. Furthermore, the experimental results suggest that the NiTSPc is more distorted in DMSO solution than the CuTSPc derivative, favoring the interaction with the nonplanar beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compounds. A novel material comprised of bacterial cellulose (BC) and Laponite clay with different inorganic organic ratios (m/m) was prepared by the contact of never-dried membranes of BC with a previous dispersion of clay particles in water. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) data of composite materials revealed an effective adhesion of clay over the surface of BC membrane; inorganic particles also penetrate into the polymer bulk, with a significant change of the surface topography even at 5% of clay loading. As a consequence, the mechanical properties are deeply affected by the presence of clay, increasing the values of the Young modulus and the tensile strength. However the maximum strain is decreased when the clay content is increased in the composite in comparison to pristine BC. The main weight loss step of the composites is shifted towards higher temperatures compared to BC, indicating that the clay particles slightly protect the polymer from thermal and oxidative decomposition. In the present study, films based on linter cellulose and chitosan were prepared using an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)/thiourea as the solvent system. The dissolution process of cellulose and chitosan in NaOH/thiourea aqueous solution was followed by the partial chain depolymerization of both biopolymers, which facilitates their solubilization. Biobased films with different chitosan/cellulose ratios were then elaborated by a casting method and subsequent solvent evaporation. They were characterized by X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal analysis, and tests related to tensile strength and biodegradation properties. The SEM images of the biofilms with 50/50 and 60/40 ratio of chitosan/cellulose showed surfaces more wrinkled than the others. The AFM images indicated that higher the content of chitosan in the biobased composite film, higher is the average roughness value. It was inferred through thermal analysis that the thermal stability was affected by the presence of chitosan in the films; the initial temperature of decomposition was shifted to lower levels in the presence of chitosan. Results from the tests for tensile strength indicated that the blending of cellulose and chitosan improved the mechanical properties of the films and that an increase in chitosan content led to production of films with higher tensile strength and percentage of elongation. The degradation study in a simulated soil showed that the higher the crystallinity, the lower is the biodegradation rate.

Cu(II) ions previously coordinated with typical electroplating organic additives were investigated as an alternative source of metal for plating bath. The coordination complexes were isolated from reaction between CuSO(4) and organic additives as ligands (oxalate ion, ethylenediamine or imidazole). Deposits over 1010 steel were successfully obtained from electroplated baths using the complexes without any addition of free additives, at pH = 4.5 (H(2)SO(4)/Na(2)SO(4)). These deposits showed better morphologies than deposits obtained from CuSO(4) solution either in the absence or presence of oxalate ion as additive (40 mmol L(-1)), at pH = 4.5 (H(2)SO(4)/Na(2)SO(4))It is suggestive that the starting metal plating coordinated with additives influences the electrode position processes, providing deposits with corrosion potentials shifted over + 200 mV in 0.5 mol L(-1) NaCl (1 mV s(-1)). The resistance against corrosion is sensitive to the type of additive-complex used as precursor. The complex with ethylenediamine presented the best deposit results with the lowest pitting potential (-0.27 V vs 3.0 mol L(-1) CE). It was concluded that the addition of free additives to the electrodeposition baths is not necessary when working with previously coordinated additives. Thus, the complexes generated in ex-situ are good alternatives as plating precursors for electrodeposition bath. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
