The surface modifications induced on Teflon FEP and Mylar C polymer films by a low energy electron beam are probed using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The electron beam, which does not affect the Mylar C, surface, may break the copolymer chain into its monomers degrading the Teflon FEP surface. For Mylar C the electron beam decreases the roughness of the polymer surface. This difference in behavior may explain recent results in which the surface modifications investigated by measuring the second crossover energy shift in the electronic emission curve differed for the two polymers (Chinaglia et al [1]). In addition, the Raman data showed no evidence of carbon formation for either polymer samples, which is explained by the fact that only a low energy electron beam is used.

Spectroscopic properties of blends formed by bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) doped with Europium (III) acetylacetonate [Eu(acac)(3)], have been studied by photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) and photoluminescent (PL) spectroscopy. Emission and excitation spectra, excited state decay times, and quantum efficiency have been evaluated as well. PAS studies evidenced chemical interactions between the Europium complex and the PC/PMMA blend, which presented typical percolation threshold behavior regarding the Eu3+ content. PL spectra evidenced the photoluminescence of the Eu3+ incorporated into the blend. Photoluminescence property enhancement was observed for the composite in comparison with the precursor compound. Optimized emission quantum efficiency was observed for the 60/40 blend doped with 2% and 4% Europium (III) acetylacetonate. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Er3+ -containing gallium-lanthanum oxysulfide glasses have been prepared from Ga2O3 and La2S3 in a sulfur/argon reactive atmosphere. The samples have been characterized by absorption and emission spectroscopy and IR emission kinetics. Er3+ electronic transition intensities have been analyzed in the light of the Judd-Ofelt formalism, and quantum efficiencies evaluated for the Er3+ emission at 1.5 and 2.7 mum. The results so obtained suggest that these glasses display favorable properties concerning IR optical applications. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The simultaneous formation of nanometer sized zinc oxide (ZnO), and acetate zinc hydroxide double salt (Zn-HDS) is described. These phases, obtained using the sol-gel synthesis route based on zinc acetate salt in alcoholic media, were identified by direct characterization of the reaction products in solution using complementary techniques: nephelometry, in situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), UV-Vis spectroscopy and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structures (EXAFS). In particular, the hydrolytic pathway of ethanolic zinc acetate precursor solutions promoted by addition of water with the molar ratio N = [H2O]/[Zn2+] = 0.05 was investigated in this paper. The aim was to understand the formation mechanism of ZnO colloidal suspension and to reveal the factors responsible for the formation of Zn-HDS in the final precipitates. The growth mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles is based on primary particle (radius approximate to 1.5 nm) rotation inside the primary aggregate (radius < 3.5 nm) giving rise to an epitaxial attachment of particles and then subsequent coalescence. The growth of second ZnO aggregates is not associated with the Otswald ripening, and could be associated with changes in equilibrium between solute species induced by the superficial etching of Zn-HDS particles at the advanced stage of kinetic.

Structural, electrochemical and spectroscopic data of a new dinuclear copper(II) complex with (+/-)-2-(p- methoxyphenoxy) propionic acid are reported. The complex {tetra-mu-[(+/-)-2-(p-methoxyphenoxy)propionato-O,O']-bis( aqua) dicopper(II)} crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 14.149(1) angstrom, b = 7.495(1) angstrom, c = 19.827(1) angstrom, beta = 90.62(1) and Z = 4. X-ray diffraction data show that the two copper(II) ions are held together through four carboxylate bridges, coordinated as equatorial ligands in square pyramidal geometry. The coordination sphere around each copper ion is completed by two water molecules as axial ligands. Thermogravimetric data are consistent with such results. The ligand has an L' type shape due to the angle formed by the beta-carbon of the propionic chain and the linked p-methoxyphenoxy group. This conformation contributes to the occurrence of a peculiar structure of the complex. The complex retains its dinuclear nature when dissolved in acetonitrile, but it decomposes into the corresponding mononuclear species if dissolved in ethanol, according to the EPR measurements. Further, cyclic voltammograms of the complex in acetonitrile show that the dinuclear species maintains the same structure, in agreement with the EPR data in this solvent. The voltammogram shows two irreversible reduction waves at E-pc = -0.73 and -1.04 V vs. Ag/AgCl assigned to the Cu(II)/ Cu(I) and Cu(I)/Cu degrees redox couples, respectively, and two successive oxidation waves at E-pa = -0.01 and +1.41 V vs. Ag/AgCl, assigned to the Cu degrees/Cu(I) and Cu( I)/Cu( II) redox couples, respectively, in addition to the oxidation waves of the carboxylate ligand.

PbO-Bi2O3-Ga2O3 glasses doped with different concentrations of Yb3+ are presented. The spectroscopic properties and laser parameters are calculated and a comparison between different results obtained when calculating the Yb3+ emission cross-section with the reciprocity method and with the Fuchtbauer-Ladenburg formula is presented. The behavior of the near-infrared luminescence is described theoretically by a rate equation and compared with the experimental results. This host doped with Yb3+ is a promising material for laser action at 1019 nm, with properties similar to other known glasses used as active laser media; the emission cross-section of 1.1 x 10(-20) cm(2), the high absorption cross-section (of 2.0 x 10(-20) cm(2)) and a minimum pump intensity of 2.4 kW/cm(2) are interesting properties for short pulse generation. Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films have been produced from polyaniline and a biphosphinic ruthenium complex, referred to as Rupy. Strong, repulsive interaction between the two components led to a nonlinear change in area per molecule and surface potential with the concentration of Rupy in the mixed film. Molecular interaction was also denoted in the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of the Y-type LB transferred films. The Raman spectra of mixed PANI-Rupy films indicated that the degree of oxidation of PANI increased linearly with the concentration of Ropy. With PANI being increasingly oxidized by presence of Rupy, the electroactivity of the mixed films decreased with the amount of Rupy, to become undetectable when the mixed LB film is 501 mol in Rupy. The presence of Rupy caused the electrical properties of the mixed LB films to be less sensitive to environmental changes. The electrical capacitance of a mixed film changed only by 15% when the sample was taken from vacuum to air, whereas the change was 215% for a pure PANI LB film.

Transparent oxyfluoride glasses and beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals containing glass-ceramics were prepared with varying Eu(3+) content (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6%). The effect of Eu(3+) content on the preparation of glass-ceramics was investigated. From differential scanning calorimetry, the T(x)-T(g)(T(x)-temperature of the onset of crystallization; T(g)-glass transition temperature) parameter for glasses has shown slight variation, and an exothermic peak near T(g) called the ceramization temperature (T(c)) has been observed. Heat treatments were performed at this temperature to obtain transparent glass-ceramics containing beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals, identified by x-ray diffraction. Heat treatments for different periods of time were performed and were observed to be very important in the control of the crystal size and of the crystallization rate. Based upon the absorption spectra, the scattering level due to the presence of beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals in the glass-ceramics was observed to be similar to that for the mother glasses. Detailed analysis of emission spectra and decay time measurements led to the identification of Eu(3+) ions as the beta-PbF(2) crystalline phase. Excitation spectra at 70 K show the interaction of Eu(3+) ions with the fluorogermanate network.

In this study undoped and Cr, Sb or Mo doped TiO(2) were synthesized by polymeric precursor method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-VIS spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry (TG). The TG curves showed a continuous mass loss assigned to the hydroxyl elimination and Cr(6+) reduction. Doped TiO(2) samples showed a higher mass loss assigned to water and gas elimination at lower temperatures. In these doped materials a decrease in the anatase-rutile phase transition temperature was observed. After calcination at 1,000 A degrees C, rutile was obtained as a single phase material without the presence of Cr(6+).
