A survey of European Microbial Biological Resource Centers and their users provided an overview on Microbiology education and training. The results identified future increases in demand despite several shortcomings and gaps in the current offer. Urgent adjustments are needed to match users' needs, integrate innovative programs, and adopt new technologies.

Inter-individual heterogeneity is evident in aging; education level is known to contribute for this heterogeneity. Using a cross-sectional study design and network inference applied to resting-state fMRI data, we show that aging was associated with decreased functional connectivity in a large cortical network. On the other hand, education level, as measured by years of formal education, produced an opposite effect on the long-term. These results demonstrate the increased brain efficiency in individuals with higher education level that may mitigate the impact of age on brain functional connectivity.
Superhydrophobic surfaces as a tool for the fabrication of hierarchical spherical polymeric carriers

Hierarchical polymeric carriers with high encapsulation efficiencies are fabricated via a biocompatible strategy developed using superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces. The carries are obtained by the incorporation of cell/BSA-loaded dextran-methacrylate (DEXT-MA) microparticles into alginate (ALG) macroscopic beads. Engineered devices like these are expected to boost the development of innovative and customizable systems for biomedical and biotechnological purposes.

An overview is given of the recent work on in vitro enzymatic phosphorylation of silk fibroin and human hair keratin. Opposing to many chemical "conventional" approaches, enzymatic phosphorylation is in fact a mild reaction and the treatment falls within "green chemistry" approach. Silk and keratin are not phosphorylated in vivo, but in vitro. This enzyme-driven modification is a major technological breakthrough. Harsh chemical chemicals are avoided, and mild conditions make enzymatic phosphorylation a real "green chemistry" approach. The current communication presents a novel approach stating that enzyme phosphorylation may be used as a tool to modify the surface charge of biocompatible materials such as keratin and silk.

In this paper we propose to characterize the inclusive philosophy in Thailand as well as to present and discuss results from a quantitative research carried out within the teacher pre-service context, viewed as one of the components that should be addressed by school systems that seek to be inclusive.

Natural mineral waters (still), effervescent natural mineral waters (sparkling) and aromatized waters with fruit-flavors (still or sparkling) are an emerging market. In this work, the capability of a potentiometric electronic tongue, comprised with lipid polymeric membranes, to quantitatively estimate routinely quality physicochemical parameters (pH and conductivity) as well as to qualitatively classify water samples according to the type of water was evaluated. The study showed that a linear discriminant model, based on 21 sensors selected by the simulated annealing algorithm, could correctly classify 100 % of the water samples (leave-one out cross-validation). This potential was further demonstrated by applying a repeated K-fold cross-validation (guaranteeing that at least 15 % of independent samples were only used for internal-validation) for which 96 % of correct classifications were attained. The satisfactory recognition performance of the E-tongue could be attributed to the pH, conductivity, sugars and organic acids contents of the studied waters, which turned out in significant differences of sweetness perception indexes and total acid flavor. Moreover, the E-tongue combined with multivariate linear regression models, based on sub-sets of sensors selected by the simulated annealing algorithm, could accurately estimate waters pH (25 sensors: R 2 equal to 0.99 and 0.97 for leave-one-out or repeated K-folds cross-validation) and conductivity (23 sensors: R 2 equal to 0.997 and 0.99 for leave-one-out or repeated K-folds cross-validation). So, the overall satisfactory results achieved, allow envisaging a potential future application of electronic tongue devices for bottled water analysis and classification.

Ao abordarmos a temática “Crescer & Saúde-Desenvolvimento e Comportamento dos Adolescentes e Jovens Recém-Ingressados no ISCED de Benguela”, enfatizamos a relevância dos aspetos que constituem a sua génese, no sentido de sugerir ações que contribuam para uma educação para a saúde no âmbito do sistema educativo do ensino superior público em Benguela, e a sua promoção na formação de professores. A questão de partida do estudo foi: Qual é a situação dos adolescentes e jovens em matéria de comportamentos de saúde e seus contextos? Para responder à questão, foram desenvolvidos dois estudos: O estudo quantitativo realizado através de um questionário constituído, entre outras, por questões do Health Behaviour School Aged-Children (HBSC) (Currie, et al., 2001, Matos et al., 2002, 2010), contou com um universo estudantil distribuído por nove especialidades. Assim sendo, foi extraída uma amostra de 20% do total de indivíduos que frequentam o primeiro ano, num total de 255 estudantes. O estudo qualitativo, através de grupos focais, contou com 78 indivíduos, distribuídos entre a universidade pública e privada, e teve a finalidade de caracterizar os comportamentos sexuais e outros aspetos relacionados com a saúde nos adolescentes e jovens do 1º ano do ISCED de Benguela. Os resultados refletem a necessidade de uma educação com cariz formativo e informativo que desenvolva ações pedagógicas específicas de dimensão social, presente nas várias instâncias de socialização, através da interação social para que os jovens adquiram normas, atitudes, conhecimentos e comportamentos aceites socialmente. Esperamos que o presente sirva de ferramenta importante para melhor conhecimento dos seus comportamentos, estilo de vida, conhecimentos face ao VIH/SIDA e IST’s, comportamento de risco, saúde mental, atitudes face à diferença e às adversidades, entre outros aspetos, permitindo o exercício de uma influência positiva por parte dos trabalhadores da instituição, dos colegas, familiares e sociedade civil.
