In order to understand the vertical transport of particulate matter, suspended and settling particles were collected along a meridional transect between 46°N and 35°S and an equatorial longitudinal transect between 135°E and 175°E in the Pacific. The low COrganic/N atomic ratios (<8.2) of suspended particulate organic matter (OM) and good correlation between particulate organic carbon (OC) and chlorophyll-a confirmed that the suspended particulate OM in the surface water was mainly produced by phytoplankton. Only 0.1-3.2% of primary production was transported to 1.3 km water depth in the boreal central Pacific. All data on settling particles (excluding deep trap data) showed strongly positive correlation between total mass and OM fluxes with high correlation factor of 0.93. Biogenic opal-producing plankton, mainly diatoms were responsible for most of the vertical transport of particulate OM in association with higher COrganic/CCarbonate ratios in the subarctic and equatorial hemipelagic regions in the Pacific. This vertical transport of settling particles potentially works as a sink of CO2. In the transition zone during the May 1993, large difference between PCO2 (<300 µatm) in the surface water and pCO2 (340 µatm) in the atmosphere was actually due to enhanced particulate OM flux. Since the deep water of the Pacific is enriched in CO2 and nutrients, upwelled seawater may tend to release CO2 to the atmosphere. However, higher production of particulate matter could reduce the partial pressure of CO2 in the surface water. Also terrestrial nutrients' inputs in the western equatorial Pacific have potential for the reduction of CO2 in the surface water.

Concentrations of mineral phosphorus in interstitial waters from sediments of the Southeast Atlantic generally increases from the ocean bed to the continental slope and shelf. In diatomaceous oozes of the Southwest Africa shelf, phosphorus concentration in fresh interstitial waters reaches 2.5 mg/l in absence of phosphorite concretions and 0.1-0.7 mg/l in their presence. After prolonged storage of samples concentration of dissolved mineral phosphorus sometimes increases up to 7-8 mg/l. The key factor regulating phosphorus content of solid and liquid phases of unaltered sediments are content and composition of organic matter.

The surface and sub-ice layer habitats and their metazoan fauna were studied on a drifting pack-ice floe in the western Weddell Sea from 29 November 2004 to 1 January 2005 during the "Ice Station POLarstern" (ISPOL). Flooding of the floe occurred at some places, and the establishment of surface layers with a brownish colour due to growing algae was observed at several sampling sites. The average surface-layer temperature, brine salinity and brine volume were -1.4 °C, 25.3 and 54%, respectively. The temperature-salinity relationship in the surface layer was seldom at equilibrium conditions. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations in the brine varied between 1.0 and 53.5 µg /L. Surface-layer thickness, salinity, Chl a concentration and copepod abundances were generally higher at the edge of the floe than in the inner part. The sympagic copepod species Drescheriella glacialis/racovitzai and Stephos longipes, with abundances ranging between 0 and 3830 ind/L (median: 2 ind/L) and 0 and 1293 ind/L (median: 4 ind/L), respectively, were the dominant members of the surface-layer meiofauna. Their populations consisted mainly of adults and early naupliar stages, which points to an active reproduction of these species within the surface layer. Other taxa found in the surface layer were undetermined turbellarians, the gastropod Tergipes antarcticus, and, for the first time, the ctenophore Callianira antarctica, and the amphipods Eusirus antarcticus and Eusirus tridentatus. During the course of our study, slight melting at the ice underside took place, releasing sympagic organisms to the water column. Chl a concentrations in the sub-ice water layer were very low (0.1-0.5 µg /L), except for 25 December when the Chl a concentration at 0 m depth increased to 2.3 µg /L. The most dominant sympagic copepod species found in the sub-ice layer was Ectinosoma sp., with abundances ranging between 1 and 599 ind/m**3 (median: 25 ind/m**3). Other sympagic copepod species occurring regularly in this habitat were D. glacialis/racovitzai, Diarthrodes cf. lilacinus, Idomene antarctica and S. longipes. All of these sympagic species were generally found in higher abundances at 0 m depth underneath the ice than at 5 m depth, in contrast to pelagic copepod species that occurred more frequently at 5 m depth. Niche separation and probable life-cycle strategies of dominant sympagic metazoans are discussed.

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel derived from vegetable oils or animal fats, which can be a total or partial substitute for diesel. Since 2005, this fuel was introduced in the Brazilian energy matrix through Law 11.097 that determines the percentage of biodiesel added to diesel oil as well as monitoring the insertion of this fuel in market. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) establish the obligation of adding 7% (v/v) of biodiesel to diesel commercialized in the country, making crucial the analytical control of this content. Therefore, in this study were developed and validated methodologies based on the use of Mid Infrared Spectroscopy (MIR) and Multivariate Calibration by Partial Least Squares (PLS) to quantify the methyl and ethyl biodiesels content of cotton and jatropha in binary blends with diesel at concentration range from 1.00 to 30.00% (v/v), since this is the range specified in standard ABNT NBR 15568. The biodiesels were produced from two routes, using ethanol or methanol, and evaluated according to the parameters: oxidative stability, water content, kinematic viscosity and density, presenting results according to ANP Resolution No. 45/2014. The built PLS models were validated on the basis of ASTM E1655-05 for Infrared Spectroscopy and Multivariate Calibration and ABNT NBR 15568, with satisfactory results due to RMSEP (Root Mean Square Error of Prediction) values below 0.08% (<0.1%), correlation coefficients (R) above 0.9997 and the absence of systematic error (bias). Therefore, the methodologies developed can be a promising alternative in the quality control of this fuel.

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia is a vascular disorder in pregnancyand is biochemical characterization by high soluble Flt-1 and lowplacenta growth factor as well as an imbalance in redox homeostasis.During conditions of high oxidative stress, cysteine residues on keyproteins are reversibly altered by S-glutathionylation, modifying theirfunction. Glutaredoxin-1 (Glrx) enzymatically catalyzes the removal of S-glutathione adducts, conferring reversible signaling dynamics toproteins with redox-sensitive cysteines. The role of Glrx in preeclampsiais unknown.METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis for Glrx orglutathione were conducted on human placenta samples collected pre-termfrom early onset preeclamptic patients (n=10) or non-preeclamptic induceddeliveries (n=9). Human endothelial cells were infected with adenovirusencoding Glrx or LacZ prior to the cells being exposed to hypoxia (0.1%O2, 24h) to measure changes in soluble Flt-1 (sFlt-1). Quantitative PCRand ELISA were used to measure sFlt-1 at mRNA and protein level.RESULTS: Immunohistochemical staining for GSH revealed lowerS-glutathionylation adducts in preeclampsia placenta in comparison tocontrols. Glrx expression, which catalyses de-glutathionylation wasenhanced in early onset preeclampsia compared to pre-term controlsamples. In contrast, no change was observed in preeclamptic and IUGRplacentas at full term. In endothelial cells overexpressing Glrx, sFlt-1expression was dramatically enhanced at mRNA (3-fold P<0.05) andprotein level (5 fold P>0.01, n=4) after hypoxia andoverexpressing Glrxin mice enhanced levels of circulating sFlt-1 during in vivo ischemia.CONCLUSIONS: Enhanced Glrx expression in preeclamptic placentain line with an apparent decrease in S-glutathionylation may leavekey proteins susceptible to irreversible oxidation in conditions of highoxidative stress.

We measured light absorption in 42 marine snow, sea ice, seawater, brine, and frost flower samples collected during the OASIS field campaign between February 27 and April 15, 2009. Samples represented multiple sites between landfast ice and open pack ice in coastal areas approximately 5 km west of Barrow, Alaska. The chromophores that are most commonly measured in snow, H2O2, NO3-, and NO2-, on average account for less than 1% of sunlight absorption in our samples. Instead, light absorption is dominated by unidentified "residual" species, likely organic compounds. Light absorption coefficients for the frost flowers on first-year sea ice are, on average, 40 times larger than values for terrestrial snow samples at Barrow, suggesting very large rates of photochemical reactions in frost flowers. For our marine samples the calculated rates of sunlight absorption and OH production from known chromophores are (0.1-1.4) x 10**14 (photons/cm**3/s) and (5-70) x 10**-12 (mol/L/s), respectively. Our residual spectra are similar to spectra of marine chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), suggesting that CDOM is the dominant chromophore in our samples. Based on our light absorption measurements we estimate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in Barrow seawater and frost flowers as approximately 130 and 360 µM C, respectively. We expect that CDOM is a major source of OH in our marine samples, and it is likely to have other significant photochemistry as well.

Daily records of nine meteorological variables covering the interval 1961-2013 were used in order to create a state-of-the-art homogenized climatic dataset over Romania at a spatial resolution of 0.1°. All meteorological stations with full data records, as well as stations with up to 30 % missing data, were used for the following variables: air pressure (150 stations); minimum, maximum, and average air temperature (150 stations); soil temperature (127 stations); precipitation (188 stations); sunshine hours (135 stations); cloud cover (104 stations); relative humidity (150 stations). For each parameter, the data series were first homogenized with the software MASH (Multiple Analysis of Series for Homogenization); then, the data series were gridded by means of the software MISH (Meteorological Interpolation based on Surface Homogenized Data).

Silicon isotopic signatures (d30Si) of water column silicic acid (Si(OH)4) were measured in the Southern Ocean, along a meridional transect from South Africa (Subtropical Zone) down to 57° S (northern Weddell Gyre). This provides the first reported data of a summer transect across the whole Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). d30Si variations are large in the upper 1000 m, reflecting the effect of the silica pump superimposed upon meridional water transfer across the ACC: the transport of Antarctic surface waters northward by a net Ekman drift and their convergence and mixing with warmer upper-ocean Si-depleted waters to the north. Using Si isotopic signatures, we determine different mixing interfaces: the Antarctic Surface Water (AASW), the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW), and thermoclines in the low latitude areas. The residual silicic acid concentrations of end-members control the d30Si alteration of the mixing products and with the exception of AASW, all mixing interfaces have a highly Si-depleted mixed layer end-member. These processes deplete the silicic acid AASW concentration northward, across the different interfaces, without significantly changing the AASW d30Si composition. By comparing our new results with a previous study in the Australian sector we show that during the circumpolar transport of the ACC eastward, the d30Si composition of the silicic acid pools is getting slightly, but significantly lighter from the Atlantic to the Australian sectors. This results either from the dissolution of biogenic silica in the deeper layers and/or from an isopycnal mixing with the deep water masses in the different oceanic basins: North Atlantic Deep Water in the Atlantic, and Indian Ocean deep water in the Indo-Australian sector. This isotopic trend is further transmitted to the subsurface waters, representing mixing interfaces between the surface and deeper layers. Through the use of d30Si constraints, net biogenic silica production (representative of annual export), at the Greenwich Meridian is estimated to be 5.2 ± 1.3 and 1.1 ± 0.3 mol Si/m**2 for the Antarctic Zone and Polar Front Zone, respectively. This is in good agreement with previous estimations. Furthermore, summertime Si-supply into the mixed layer of both zones, via vertical mixing, is estimated to be 1.6 ± 0.4 and 0.1 ± 0.5 mol Si/m**2, respectively.

The oxygen isotopic composition of pore waters squeezed from sediments in Hole 817C co-varies with the oxygen isotopic composition of Globigerinoides ruber below 8 mbsf. The magnitude of the variation in the pore water d18O is approximately 30% of the variation in the foraminifers. Overall, the d18O of the pore waters increases down the core, a trend that is also present in the Cl- concentrations. The variations in the d18O of pore waters may be the result of either of two phenomena. First, these may reflect original variations in the waters, the magnitude of which has been subsequently reduced by process of diffusion. Second, these may reflect recrystallization of the precursor sediment and isotopic exchange between the fluids and the recrystallized sediment. At the moment data are not available to ascertain which process is responsible although the correlation between the Cl- and the d18O data suggests that these values reflect the original composition modified by diffusion.

Spark source mass spectroscopy was used to analyze 61 elements in ten ferromanganese nodules found near Glenora in the Bay of Quinte at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Most minor elements, including As, Pb, and Hg, have concentrations between 1-100 µg/g. F, S, Co, Zn, and La have concentrations in 100 µg/g range. Ba and Sr are present at levels of 1% and 0.1% respectively. Compared to similar measurements on nodules found in the Great Lakes and in other parts of the globe, values reported here are generally lower. Compared to their marine equivalents, lake nodules appear to be inferior scavengers of minor elements. Examination of all available data corroborates the postulate that marine biological material is an important source of minor elements found in oceanic nodules.

Periplatform ooze is an admixture of pelagic carbonate and sediment derived from neritic carbonate platforms. Compositional variations of periplatform ooze allow the rectonstruction of past sea-level changes. Periplatform ooze formed during sea-level highstands is finer grained and richer in aragonit through the elevated input of material from the flooded platform compared to periplatform ooze formed during the episodes of lowered sea level. In many cases, however, the sea floor around carbonate platforms is subjected to bottom currents which are expected to affect sediment composition, i.e. through winnowing of the fine fraction. The interaction of sea-level driven highstand shedding and current impact on the formation of periplatform ooze is influenced or even distorted by changing current activity, an integrated study using seismic, hydroacoustic and sedimentological data has been performed on periplatform ooze deposited in the Inner Sea of the Maldives. The Miocene to Pleistocene succession of drift deposits is subdivided into nine units; limits of seismostratigraphic units correspond to changes or turnarounds in grain size trends in cores recovered at ODP Site 716 and NEOMA Site 1143. For the Pleistocene it can be shown how changes in grain size occur in concert with sea-level changes and changes of the monsoonal system, which is thought to be a major driver bottom currents in the Maldives. A clear hightstand shedding pattern only appears in the data at a time of of relaxation of monsoonal strength during the last 315 ky. Results imply (1) that drift sediments provide a potential target for analyzing past changes in oceanic currents and (2) that the ooze composition bears a mixed signal of input and physical winnowing at the sea floor.

DSDP Hole 504B is the only hole in oceanic crust to penetrate through the volcanic section and into hydrothermally altered sheeted dikes. We have carried out petrologic and sulfur isotopic analyses of sulfide and sulfate minerals and whole rocks from the core in order to place constraints on the geochemistry of sulfur during hydrothermal alteration of ocean crust. The nearly 600 m-thick pillow section has lost sulfur to seawater and has net d34S = -1.8 per mil due to degassing of SO2 during crystallization and subsequent low temperature interaction with seawater. Hydrothermally altered rocks in the 200 m-thick transition zone are enriched in S and 34S (4300 ppm and +3.0 +/-1.2 per mil, respectively), whereas the more than 500 m of sheeted dikes contain 720 ppm S with d34S = +0.6 +/-1.4 per mil. These data are consistent with the presence of predominantly basaltic sulfur in hydrothermal fluids deep in the crust: following precipitation of anhydrite during seawater recharge, small amounts of seawater sulfate were reduced at temperatures >250°C through conversion of igneous pyrrhotite to secondary pyrite and minor oxidation of ferrous iron in the crust. The S- and 34S-enrichments of the transition zone are the results of seawater sulfate reduction and sulfide deposition during subsurface mixing between upwelling hot (up to 350°C) hydrothermal fluids and seawater. Seawater sulfate was probably reduced through oxidation of ferrous iron in hydrothermal fluids and in the transition zone rocks. Alteration of the upper crust resulted in loss of basaltic sulfur to seawater, fixation of minor seawater sulfur in the crust and redistribution of magmatic sulfur within the crust. This caused net increases in sulfur content and d34S of the upper 1.8 km of the oceanic crust.
