The stability of multistep second derivative methods for integro-differential equations is examined through a test equation which allows for the construction of the associated characteristic polynomial and its region of stability (roots in the unit circle) at a proper parameter space. This paper presents an extension of the Enestrom-Kakeya theorem concerning the roots of a polynomial that arises from the analysis of the stability of Brown (K, L) methods. The generalization relates to relaxing one of the inequalities on the coefficients of the polynomial. Two results concerning the zeros of polynomials will be proved, one of them providing a partial answer to a conjecture by Meneguette (1994)[6]. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The extracellular glycerol kinase gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (GUT]) was cloned into the expression vector pPICZ alpha. A and integrated into the genome of the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris X-33. The presence of the GUT1 insert was confirmed by PCR analysis. Four clones were selected and the functionality of the recombinant enzyme was assayed. Among the tested clones, one exhibited glycerol kinase activity of 0.32 U/mL, with specific activity of 0.025 U/mg of protein. A medium optimized for maximum biomass production by recombinant Pichia pastoris in shaker cultures was initially explored, using 2.31 % (by volume) glycerol as the carbon source. Optimization was carried out by response surface methodology (RSM). In preliminary experiments, following a Plackett-Burman design, glycerol volume fraction (phi(Gly)) and growth time (t) were selected as the most important factors in biomass production. Therefore, subsequent experiments, carried out to optimize biomass production, followed a central composite rotatable design as a function of phi(Gly) and time. Glycerol volume fraction proved to have a significant positive linear effect on biomass production. Also, time was a significant factor (at linear positive and quadratic levels) in biomass production. Experimental data were well fitted by a convex surface representing a second order polynomial model, in which biomass is a function of both factors (R(2)=0.946). Yield and specific activity of glycerol kinase were mainly affected by the additions of glycerol and methanol to the medium. The optimized medium composition for enzyme production was: 1 % yeast extract, 1 % peptone, 100 mM potassium phosphate buffer, pH=6.0, 1.34 % yeast nitrogen base (YNB), 4.10(-5) % biotin, 1 %, methanol and 1 %, glycerol, reaching 0.89 U/mL of glycerol kinase activity and 14.55 g/L of total protein in the medium after 48 h of growth.

In this work is presented a new method for the determination of the orbital period (Porb) of eclipsing binary systems based on the wavelet technique. This method is applied on 18 eclipsing binary systems detected by the CoRoT (Convection Rotation and planetary transits) satellite. The periods obtained by wavelet were compared with those obtained by the conventional methods: box Fitting (EEBLS) for detached and semi-detached eclipsing binaries; and polynomial methods (ANOVA) for contact binary systems. Comparing the phase diagrams obtained by the different techniques the wavelet method determine better Porb compared with EEBLS. In the case of contact binary systems the wavelet method shows most of the times better results than the ANOVA method but when the number of data per orbital cicle is small ANOVA gives more accurate results. Thus, the wavelet technique seems to be a great tool for the analysis of data with the quality and precision given by CoRoT and the incoming photometric missions.

The study of function approximation is motivated by the human limitation and inability to register and manipulate with exact precision the behavior variations of the physical nature of a phenomenon. These variations are referred to as signals or signal functions. Many real world problem can be formulated as function approximation problems and from the viewpoint of artificial neural networks these can be seen as the problem of searching for a mapping that establishes a relationship from an input space to an output space through a process of network learning. Several paradigms of artificial neural networks (ANN) exist. Here we will be investigated a comparative of the ANN study of RBF with radial Polynomial Power of Sigmoids (PPS) in function approximation problems. Radial PPS are functions generated by linear combination of powers of sigmoids functions. The main objective of this paper is to show the advantages of the use of the radial PPS functions in relationship traditional RBF, through adaptive training and ridge regression techniques.

This work presents an application for the plate analysis formulation by BEM where 3 boundary equations are used, written for the transverse displacement w and the normal and tangential derivatives partial derivativew/partial derivativen and partial derivativew/partial derivatives. In this extension, the transverse displacement w is approximated by a cubic polynomial and, as a consequence, partial derivativew/partial derivatives has a quadratic approximation. This alternative BEM formulation improves the analysis of thin plates, when compared to the formulation using the linear approximation for the displacements, mainly in the obtaining of the bending moments at the boundary of the plate. The implementation of this proposal to the computational codes is simple. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The conventional Newton and fast decoupled power flow (FDPF) methods have been considered inadequate to obtain the maximum loading point of power systems due to ill-conditioning problems at and near this critical point. It is well known that the PV and Q-theta decoupling assumptions of the fast decoupled power flow formulation no longer hold in the vicinity of the critical point. Moreover, the Jacobian matrix of the Newton method becomes singular at this point. However, the maximum loading point can be efficiently computed through parameterization techniques of continuation methods. In this paper it is shown that by using either theta or V as a parameter, the new fast decoupled power flow versions (XB and BX) become adequate for the computation of the maximum loading point only with a few small modifications. The possible use of reactive power injection in a selected PV bus (Q(PV)) as continuation parameter (mu) for the computation of the maximum loading point is also shown. A trivial secant predictor, the modified zero-order polynomial which uses the current solution and a fixed increment in the parameter (V, theta, or mu) as an estimate for the next solution, is used in predictor step. These new versions are compared to each other with the purpose of pointing out their features, as well as the influence of reactive power and transformer tap limits. The results obtained with the new approach for the IEEE test systems (14, 30, 57 and 118 buses) are presented and discussed in the companion paper. The results show that the characteristics of the conventional method are enhanced and the region of convergence around the singular solution is enlarged. In addition, it is shown that parameters can be switched during the tracing process in order to efficiently determine all the PV curve points with few iterations. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
