The purpose of this study, based on secondary data from attendees at a substance abuse clinic for the Kickapoo Healing Grounds in Eagle Pass, Texas, is two fold: (1) to elucidate neuro-behavioral performance of volatile substance abusers in the Kickapoo tribe and (2) to determine factors associated with their treatment completion and rehabilitation as measured by their employment at follow-up. Volatile substance abuse (VSA) is associated with a host of neurological manifestations, and secondary prevention or clinical treatment and rehabilitation remains the mainstay of control efforts. Very little is known about VSA in general, and especially among Native American populations. It is anticipated that the results will help determine and assist other tribes and non-tribal substance abuse centers with treatment planning for volatile substance abusers among Native American populations. ^

Childhood overweight and obesity are two major public health problems that are of economic and medical concern in the world today (Lobstein, Baur, & Uauy, 2004). Overweight conditions in childhood are important because they are widely prevalent, serious, and carry lifetime consequences for health and well being (Lobstein et al., 2004). Several studies have shown an association between television viewing and obesity in all age groups (Caroli, Argentieri, Cardone, & Masi, 2004; Harper, 2006; Vandewater & Huang, 2006; Wiecha et al., 2006). One mechanism that potentially links television viewing to childhood obesity is food advertising (Story, 2003). ^ The purpose of this study was to examine the types of foods advertised on children's television programming and to determine if there have been any changes in the number and types of commercials over the last 13 years. In addition, the food content of the advertisements was compared to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines to determine if the foods targeted were consistent with the current recommendations. Finally, each television network was analyzed individually to determine any differences between advertising on cable and regular programming. ^ A descriptive analysis was conducted on the most commonly advertised commercials during children's television programming on Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A total of 10 major television networks were viewed on three different Saturday mornings during June and July 2007. Commercial advertising accounted for approximately 19% of children's total viewing time. Of the 3,185 commercials, 28.5% were for foods, 67.7% were for non-food items, and 3.8% were PSAs. On average, there were 30 commercial advertisements and PSAs per hour, of which approximately nine were for food. ^ Of the 907 food advertisements, 72.0% were for foods classified in the fats, oils, and sugar group. The next largest group (17.3%) was for restaurant food of which 15.3% were for unhealthy/fast food restaurant fare. The most frequently advertised food product on Saturday morning television was regular cereal, accounting for 43.9% of all food advertisements. ^ Cable and regular programming stations varied slightly in the amount, length, and category of commercials. Cable television had about 50% less commercials and PSAs (1098) than regular programming (2087), but only had approximately 150 minutes less total commercial and PSA time; therefore, cable, in general, had longer commercials than regular programming. Overall, cable programming had more advertisements encouraging increased physical activity and positive nutrition behavior with less commercials focusing on the fats, oils, and sugar groups, compared to regular programming. ^ During the last 13 years, food advertisements have not improved, despite the recent IOM report on marketing foods to children (Institute of Medicine-Committee on Food Marketing and the Diets of Children and Youth, 2005), although the frequency of food advertisements has improved slightly. Children are now viewing an average of one food advertisement every 7 minutes, compared to one food advertisement every 5 minutes in 1994 (Kotz & Story, 1994). Therefore, manufacturers are putting a greater emphasis on advertising other products to children. Despite the recent attention to the issue of marketing unhealthy foods to children through television advertisements, not much progress has been noted since 1994. Further advocacy and regulatory issues concerning the content of advertisements during Saturday morning TV need to be explored. ^

Outdoor environmental risk factors for asthma have been extensively researched, even though the majority of a person's daily activity occurs indoors. There is limited evidence linking personal exposure concentrations of ozone, pollen, mold, temperature, and humidity to childhood asthma. ^ The current study consisted of a secondary, more complex analysis of the data from the Houston Air Toxics and Asthma in Children (ATAC) Study to further investigate the association of personal ozone exposure on asthma outcome variability among middle school children with asthma. The ATAC Study primarily investigated the association between selected oxygenated air toxics and indicators of asthma variability (PEFR, FEV1, asthma symptoms, and rescue medication usage) among 30 labile and persistent Houston middle-school children with diagnosed asthma. This panel study used a repeated measurements design of four separate 10-day sampling periods that extended over a 20 month period. The secondary analysis included aggregate regression models that were constructed with two different estimates of ozone exposure (daily maximum hourly outdoor concentration and daily maximum hourly personal exposure), with three different estimates of personal environmental temperature and humidity exposures (daily average, intraday difference, and interday difference), and for thee different time periods [same day of exposure (lag 0), one day after initial exposure (lag 1), and two days after initial exposure (lag 2)]. ^ Overall, the models using daily maximum hourly personal ozone exposures in combination with intraday and interday personal temperature and humidity differences produced more significant plausible associations than models using daily maximum hourly personal ozone exposures with personal average temperature and humidity exposures. Significant associations were identified between daily maximum hourly personal ozone exposure and clinical indicators of asthma variability. The increasing effect on rescue medication usage from daily maximum hourly personal ozone exposure were identified as soon as the same day of exposure (lag 0; p=0.0072), and the same effects were delayed until the second next day (lag 2; p= 0.0026). The increasing effect on asthma symptoms were identified on the second next day after initial exposure (lag 2; p= 0.0024). There was a consistent inverse relationship between personal relative humidity exposure and indicators of asthma variability. Decreasing effects on daily FEV1 variability from personal relative humidity exposure were identified on the same day of exposure (lag 0; p= 0.034), increasing effects on morning PEFR were identified on the next day after initial exposure (lag 1; p= 0.0001), and decreasing effects on overnight PEFR variability were identified on the second next day after the initial exposure (lag 2; p= 0.007). With the conclusion of this research, there are opportunities for future similar studies in the preventive management of asthma in children living in high-ozone areas.^

Three studies examined seasonal or circadian variations in selected responses to influenza infection or vaccination. The first, a seroepidemiologic study, evaluated temporal patterns of antibody titers to influenza A/Texas. Human umbilical cord bloods were sampled over a two-year period when the virus was not present in the community. No endogenous seasonal pattern was detected. The second study included three experiments on circadian rhythms in mice. Neither susceptibility nor protection from inactivated or attenuated vaccine varied significantly according to time of administration. A slight effect, however, was suggested with inactivated vaccine. Three human vaccine trials comprised the third study. Outcome variables included rise in antibody titer, final antibody titer, incidence of adverse reactions, and protection from community infection. Patterns in antibody response and protection variables were inconsistent, and generally not clinically significant. Local reactions to inactivated vaccine were more frequent if injections were received in the afternoon as compared to morning. This was true to adults that had been previously vaccinated. ^

This study evaluated the administration-time-dependent effects of a stimulant (Dexedrine 5-mg), a sleep-inducer (Halcion 0.25-mg) and placebo (control) on human performance. The investigation was conducted on 12 diurnally active (0700-2300) male adults (23-38 yrs) using a double-blind, randomized sixway-crossover three-treatment, two-timepoint (0830 vs 2030) design. Performance tests were conducted hourly during sleepless 13-hour studies using a computer generated, controlled and scored multi-task cognitive performance assessment battery (PAB) developed at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Specific tests were Simple and Choice Reaction Time, Serial Addition/Subtraction, Spatial Orientation, Logical Reasoning, Time Estimation, Response Timing and the Stanford Sleepiness Scale. The major index of performance was "Throughput", a combined measure of speed and accuracy.^ For the Placebo condition, Single and Group Cosinor Analysis documented circadian rhythms in cognitive performance for the majority of tests, both for individuals and for the group. Performance was best around 1830-2030 and most variable around 0530-0700 when sleepiness was greatest (0300).^ Morning Dexedrine dosing marginally enhanced performance an average of 3% with reference to the corresponding in time control level. Dexedrine AM also increased alertness by 10% over the AM control. Dexedrine PM failed to improve performance with reference to the corresponding PM control baseline. With regard to AM and PM Dexedrine administrations, AM performance was 6% better with subjects 25% more alert.^ Morning Halcion administration caused a 7% performance decrement and 16% increase in sleepiness and a 13% decrement and 10% increase in sleepiness when administered in the evening compared to corresponding in time control data. Performance was 9% worse and sleepiness 24% greater after evening versus morning Halcion administration.^ These results suggest that for evening Halcion dosing, the overnight sleep deprivation occurring in coincidence with the nadir in performance due to circadian rhythmicity together with the CNS depressant effects combine to produce performance degradation. For Dexedrine, morning administration resulted in only marginal performance enhancement; Dexedrine in the evening was less effective, suggesting the 5-mg dose level may be too low to counteract the partial sleep deprivation and nocturnal nadir in performance. ^

Seasonal variation in menarche, menstrual cycle length and menopause was investigated using Tremin Trust data. Too, self-reported hot flash data for women with natural and surgically-induced menopause were analyzed for rhythms.^ Menarche data from approximately 600 U.S. women born between 1940 and 1970 revealed a 6-month rhythm (first acrophase in January, double amplitude of 58%M). A notable shift from a December-January peak in menarche for those born in the 1940s and 1950s to an August-September peak for those born in the 1960s was observed. Groups of girls 8-14 and 15-17 yr old at menarche exhibited a seasonal difference in the pattern of menarche occurrence of about 6 months in relation to each other. Girls experiencing menarche during August-October were statistically significantly younger than those experiencing it at other times. Season of birth was not associated with season of menarche.^ The lengths of approximately 150,000 menstrual intervals of U.S. women were analyzed for seasonality. Menstrual intervals possibly disturbed by natural (e.g., childbirth) or other events (e.g., surgery, medication) were excluded. No 6- or 12-month rhythmicities were found for specific interval lengths (14-24, 25-31 and 32-56 days) or ages in relation to menstrual interval (9-11, 12-13, 15-19, 20-24, 25-39, 40-44 and 44 yr old and older).^ Hot flash data of 14 women experiencing natural menopause (NM) and 11 experiencing surgically-induced menopause (SIM) did not differ in frequency of hot flashes. Hot flashes in NM women exhibited 12- and 8-hr, but not 24-hr rhythmicities. Hot flashes in SIM women exhibited 24- and 12-hr, but not 8-hr, rhythmicities. Regardless of type of menopause, women with a peak frequency in hot flashes during the morning (0400 through 0950) were distinguishable from those with such in the evening (1600 through 2159).^ Data from approximately 200 U.S. women revealed a 6-month rhythm in menopause with first peak in May. No significant 12-month variation in menopause was detected by Cosinor analysis. Season of birth and age at menopause were not associated with season of menopause. Age at menopause declined significantly over the years for women born between 1907 and 1926, inclusive. ^

This study examined the effects of skipping breakfast on selected aspects of children's cognition, specifically their memory (both immediate and one week following presentation of stimuli), mental tempo, and problem solving accuracy. Test instruments used included the Hagen Central/Incidental Recall Test, Matching Familiar Figures Test, McCarthy Digit Span and Tapping Tests. The study population consisted of 39 nine-to eleven year old healthy children who were admitted for overnight stays at a clinical research setting for two nights approximately one week apart. The study was designed to be able to adequately monitor and control subjects' food consumption. The design chosen was the cross-over design where randomly on either the first or second visit, the child skipped breakfast. In this way, subjects acted as their own controls. Subjects were tested at noon of both visits, this representing an 18-hour fast.^ Analysis focused on whether or not fasting for this period of time affected an individual's performance. Results indicated that for most of the tests, subjects were not significantly affected by skipping breakfast for one morning. However, on tests of short-term central and incidental recall, subjects who had skipped breakfast recalled significantly more of the incidental cues although they did so at no apparent expense to their storing of central information. In the area of problem-solving accuracy, subjects skipping breakfast at time two made significantly more errors on hard sections of the MFF Test. It should be noted that although a large number of tests were conducted, these two tests showed the only significant differences.^ These significant results in the areas of short-term incidental memory and in problem solving accuracy were interpreted as being an effect of subject fatigue. That is, when subjects missed breakfast, they were more likely to become fatigued and in the novel environment presented in the study setting, it is probable that these subjects responded by entering Class II fatigue which is characterized by behavioral excitability, diffused attention and altered performance patterns. ^

The composition and vertical distribution of planktonic ciliates within the surface layer was monitored over four diel cycles in May 95, during the JGOFS-France DYNAPROC cruise in the Ligurian Sea (NW Mediterranean). Ciliates were placed into size and trophic categories: micro- and nano-heterotrophic ciliates, mixotrophic ciliates, tintinnids and the autotrophic Mesodinium rubrum. Mixotrophic ciliates (micro and nano) represented an average of 46% of oligotrich abundance and 39% of oligotrich biomass; nano-ciliates (hetero and mixotrophic) were abundant, representing about 60 and 17% of oligotrich abundance and biomass, respectively. Tintinnid ciliates were a minor part of heterotrophic ciliates. The estimated contribution of mixotrophs to chlorophyll a concentration was modest, never exceeding 9% in discrete samples. Vertical profiles of ciliates showed that chlorophyll-containing ciliates (mixotrophs and autotrophs) were mainly concentrated and remained at the chlorophyll a maximum depth. In contrast, among heterotrophic ciliates, a portion of the population appeared to migrate from 20-30 m depth during the day to the surface at night or in the early morning. Correlation analyses of ciliate groups and phytoplankton pigments showed a strong relationship between nano-ciliates and zeaxanthin, and between chlorophyll-containing ciliates and chlorophyll a, as well as other pigments that were maximal at the chlorophyll a maximum depth. Total surface layer concentrations showed minima of ciliates during nightime/early morning hours.

Seabirds feed heavily on Arctic cod Boreogadus saida during the summer in the Canadian Arctic but little is known of the interactions among birds while foraging and the factors that drive feeding behaviour. The objective of this study was to describe the relationship between seabirds and Arctic cod in a productive feeding area distant from breeding colonies. Transect surveys were completed using standardized count protocols to determine the density of seabirds in Allen Bay, Cornwallis Island, Nunavut. Shore-based observation sites determined seabird foraging behaviour associated with the presence of schools and environmental variables. The density of birds (156 bird/km**2) was high compared to that of other locations in the Canadian Arctic. Several bird species were more active early in the morning and with winds from the south, possibly due to an increase in Arctic cod feeding on zooplankton at the surface. Northern fulmars Fulmarus glacialis and black-legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla captured Arctic cod directly from the water; however, they lost nearly 25% of captures to glaucous gulls Larus hyperboreus and parasitic jaegers Stercorarius parasiticus. These kleptoparasitic seabirds benefited the most in Allen Bay obtaining as much as 8 times more Arctic cod than species capturing cod directly. Northern fulmars captured 3 times more Arctic cod from schools, and black-legged kittiwakes captured similar proportions of schooling and non-schooling cod. We conclude that non-schooling Arctic cod are as important as schooling cod as an energy source for seabirds in nearshore areas, such as Allen Bay, during the summer.

The AND-2A drillcore (Antarctic Drilling Program-ANDRILL) was successfully completed in late 2007 on the Antarctic continental margin (Southern McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea) with the aim of tracking ice proximal to shallow marine environmental fluctuations and to document the 20-Ma evolution of the Erebus Volcanic Province. Lava clasts and tephra layers from the AND-2A drillcore were investigated from a petrographic and stratigraphic point of view and analyzed by the 40Ar-39Ar laser technique in order to constrain the age model of the core and to gain information on the style and nature of sediment deposition in the Victoria Land Basin since Early Miocene. Ten out of 17 samples yielded statistically robust 40Ar-39Ar ages, indicating that the AND-2A drillcore recovered <230 m of Middle Miocene (~128-358 m below sea floor, ~11.5-16.0 Ma) and >780 m of Early Miocene (~358-1093 m below sea floor, ~16.0-20.1 Ma). Results also highlight a nearly continuous stratigraphic record from at least 358 m below sea floor down hole, characterized by a mean sedimentation rate of ~19 cm/ka, possible oscillations of no more than a few hundreds of ka and a break within ~17.5-18.1 Ma. Comparison with available data from volcanic deposits on land, suggests that volcanic rocks within the AND-2A core were supplied from the south, possibly with source areas closer to the drill site for the upper core levels, and from 358 m below sea floor down hole, with the 'proto-Mount Morning' as the main source.

During summer seasons (from 2012 to 2015) high resolution observation were performed in the Civitavecchia coastal area (Northern Tyrrhenian sea, west coast). All sampling was carried out from a small boat (5m rigid inflatable) starting in the early morning typically around 06:00 a.m. , and lasting from 2 to 8 h, depending on the weather conditions. The purposes of the experiment was to observe the variations of both the coastal circulation and the water column in response to rotation of 180 ° in the wind direction. During surveys both current measurements and yo-yo time series were performed. Current data were acquired using an ADCP SonTeck (500 Khz, sampling interval from 20sec to 60 sec, average interval 50% sampling, cell thickness 1 meter) and the yo-yo time series employing a small instrument package (CTD). The CTD contained an Idronaut 316 Plus and a SeaPoint fluorometer. The sampling rate for the CTD was 10Hz, profiling with the CTD was done by allowing the instrument package to free-fall, at an average descent rate of 1 m/s. During the summer 2012, the sampling plan consisted in four stations spaced a quarter of a mile (St. 1 - 10 m; St. 2 - 20 m; St. 3 - 30 m; and St. 4 - 40 m), in which yo-yo time series were performed with an interval of 20 min. In order to study fluorescence of Chlorophyll a pathes distribution in coastal zone. Breeze induced circulation was the goal of the following summers surveys, in these current measurements and yo-yo time series were performed moored at a depth of 40 m. Offshore station (St. 1 -40m) has been chosen to perform measurement, basis of previously observations (2012 sampling surveys). It was decided as wind driven circulation and mixing phenomena are less influenced by seabed than the other stations. Acquired data have been processed by NEMO SeaDataNet software.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of row orien¬tation on vine and soil water status in an irrigated vineyard. The trial was developed during 2006, 2007 and 2008, in the South East region of Madrid (Spain) on 5-year old Cabernet franc grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) grafted onto 140Ru. Plant spacing was 2.5 m x 1.5 m and vines were trained to a VSP. Four orientations were stu¬died: North-South (N-S), East-West (E-W), Northeast-Southwest (N+45) and North-South +20o (N+20). Irrigation (0.4•ET0) started when shoot growth stopped. Soil water availability was measured using a TDR technique with forty buried probes. Row orientation did not have any effect on water consumption in the vineyard. At maturity, leaf water potential was measured at predawn, early mor¬ning, midday and 14:00 solar time, on both canopy sides - sun and shade – ; the early morning measurement was the one that better differentiated treatments. Leaf water potential was a good indica¬tor of plant water status. Differences between (N-S and E-W) and (N+20 and N+45) treatments were obtained both on sun and shade canopy sides, N+20 and N+45 having lower leaf water potentials then drier leaves. The water stress integral shows that N-S and E-W reach the end of maturation with a greater level of hydration than N+45 and N+20. As a whole, N+45 and N+20 orientations, without affecting too much the soil available water content, induce regularly more water stress to the vine at some periods, probably due to an higher sunlight interception in early morning which makes water limitation for the vine more early and thus more severe during the day.

The advantages of tabled evaluation regarding program termination and reduction of complexity are well known —as are the significant implementation, portability, and maintenance efforts that some proposals (especially those based on suspensión) require. This implementation effort is reduced by program transformation-based continuation cali techniques, at some eñrciency cost. However, the traditional formulation of this proposal by Ramesh and Cheng limits the interleaving of tabled and non-tabled predicates and thus cannot be used as-is for arbitrary programs. In this paper we present a complete translation for the continuation cali technique which, using the runtime support needed for the traditional proposal, solves these problems and makes it possible to execute arbitrary tabled programs. We present performance results which show that CCall offers a useful tradeoff that can be competitive with state-of-the-art implementations.
