Boron abundances have been derived for seven main-sequence B- type stars from Hubble Space Telescope STIS spectra around the B III lambda2066 line. In two stars, boron appears to be undepleted with respect to the presumed initial abundance. In one star, boron is detectable but is clearly depleted. In the other four stars, boron is undetectable, implying depletions of 1-2 dex. Three of these four stars are nitrogen enriched, but the fourth shows no enrichment of nitrogen. Only rotationally induced mixing predicts that boron depletions are unaccompanied by nitrogen enrichments. The inferred rate of boron depletion from our observations is in good agreement with these predictions. Other boron-depleted nitrogen-normal stars are identified from the literature. In addition, several boron- depleted nitrogen-rich stars are identified, and while all fall on the boron-nitrogen trend predicted by rotationally induced mixing, a majority have nitrogen enrichments that are not uniquely explained by rotation. The spectra have also been used to determine iron group (Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni) abundances. The seven B-type stars have near-solar iron group abundances, as expected for young stars in the solar neighborhood. We have also analyzed the halo B-type star PG 0832 + 676. We find [Fe/H] = -0.88 +/- 0.10, and the absence of the B III line gives the upper limit [B/H] <-2.5. These and other published abundances are used to infer the star's evolutionary status as a post-asymptotic giant branch star.

Ground state energy, structure, and harmonic vibrational modes of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium triflate ([bmim][Tf]) clusters have been computed using an all-atom empirical potential model. Neutral and charged species have been considered up to a size (30 [bmim][Tf] pairs) well into the nanometric range. Free energy computations and thermodynamic modeling have been used to predict the equilibrium composition of the vapor phase as a function of temperature and density. The results point to a nonnegligible concentration of very small charged species at pressures (P ~ 0.01 Pa) and temperatures (T 600 K) at the boundary of the stability range of [bmim][Tf]. Thermal properties of nanometric neutral droplets have been investigated in the 0 T 700 K range. A near-continuous transition between a liquidlike phase at high T and a solidlike phase at low T takes place at T ~ 190 K in close correspondence with the bulk glass point Tg ~ 200 K. Solidification is accompanied by a transition in the dielectric properties of the droplet, giving rise to a small permanent dipole embedded into the solid cluster. The simulation results highlight the molecular precursors of several macroscopic properties and phenomena and point to the close competition of Coulomb and dispersion forces as their common origin.

Using first principles electronic structure methods, we calculate the effects of boron impurities in bulk copper and at surfaces and grain boundaries. We find that boron segregation to the Sigma5(310)[001] grain boundary should strengthen the boundary up to 1.5 ML coverage (15.24 at./nm2). The maximal effect is observed at 0.5 ML and corresponds to boron atoms filling exclusively grain boundary interstices. In copper bulk, B causes significant distortion both in interstitial and regular lattice sites, for which boron atoms are either too big or too small. The distortion is compensated to a large extent when the interstitial and substitutional boron combine together to form a strongly bound dumbbell. Our prediction is that bound boron impurities should appear in a sizable proportion if not dominate in most experimental conditions. A large discrepancy between calculated heats of solution and experimental terminal solubility of B in Cu is found, indicating either a significant failure of the density functional approach or, more likely, strongly overestimated solubility limits in the existing B-Cu phase diagram.

We propose schemes for entanglement concentration and purification for qubit systems encoded in flying atomic pairs. We use cavity-quantum electrodynamics as an illustrative setting within which our proposals can be implemented. Maximally entangled pure states of qubits can be produced as a result of our protocols. In particular, the concentration protocol yields Bell states with the largest achievable theoretical probability while the purification scheme produces arbitrarily pure Bell states. The requirements for the implementation of these protocols are modest, within the state of the art, and we address all necessary steps in two specific setups based on experimentally mature microwave technology.

increasing evidence from both clinical and experimental studies indicates that the insulin-releasing hormone, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) may exert additional protective/reparative effects on the cardiovascular system. The aim of this study was to examine vasorelaxant effects of GLP-1(7-36)amide, three structurally-related peptides and a non-peptide GLP-1 agonist in rat aorta. Interestingly, all GLP-1 compounds, including the established GLP-1 receptor antagonist, exendin (9-39) caused concentration-dependent relaxation. Mechanistic studies employing hyperpolarising concentrations of potassium or glybenclamide revealed that these relaxant effects are mediated via specific activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels. Further experiments using a specific membrane-permeable cyclic AMP (cAMP) antagonist, and demonstration of increased cAMP production in response to GLP-1 illustrated the critical importance of this pathway. These data significantly extend previous observations suggesting that GLP-1 may modulate vascular function, and indicate that this effect may be mediated by the GLP-1 receptor. However, further studies are required in order to establish whether GLP-1 related agents may confer additional cardiovascular benefits to diabetic patients. (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
