M.A. (Educ.) Anu Kajamaa from the University of Helsinki, Center for Research on Activity, Development and Learning (CRADLE), examines change efforts and their consequences in health care in the public sector. The aim of her academic dissertation is, by providing a new conceptual framework, to widen our understanding of organizational change efforts and their consequences and managerial challenges. Despite the multiple change efforts, the results of health care development projects have not been very promising, and many developmental needs and managerial challenges exist. The study challenges the predominant, well-framed health care change paradigm and calls for an expanded view to explore the underlying issues and multiplicities of change efforts and their consequences. The study asks what kind of expanded conceptual framework is needed to better understand organizational change as transcending currently dominant oppositions in management thinking, specifically in the field of health care. The study includes five explorative case studies of health care change efforts and their consequences in Finland. Theory and practice are tightly interconnected in the study. The methodology of the study integrates the ethnography of organizational change, a narrative approach and cultural-historical activity theory. From the stance of activity theory, historicity, contradictions, locality and employee participation play significant roles in developing health care. The empirical data of the study has mainly been collected in two projects, funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund. The data was collected in public sector health care organizations during the years 2004-2010. By exploring the oppositions between distinct views on organizational change and the multi-site, multi-level and multi-logic of organizational change, the study develops an expanded, multidimensional activity-theoretical framework on organizational change and management thinking. The findings of the study contribute to activity theory and organization studies, and provide information for health care management and practitioners. The study illuminates that continuous development efforts bridged to one another and anchored to collectively created new activity models can lead to significant improvements and organizational learning in health care. The study presents such expansive learning processes. The ways of conducting change efforts in organizations play a critical role in the creation of collective new practices and tools and in establishing ownership over them. Some of the studied change efforts were discontinuous or encapsulated, not benefiting the larger whole. The study shows that the stagnation and unexpected consequences of change efforts relate to the unconnectedness of the different organizational sites, levels and logics. If not dealt with, the unintended consequences such as obstacles, breaks and conflicts may stem promising change and learning processes.

The present study evaluates the feasibility of undelimbed Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) for integrated production of pulp and energy in a kraft pulp mill from the technical, economic and environmental points of view, focusing on the potential of bundle harvesting. The feasibility of tree sections for pulp production was tested by conducting an industrial wood-handling experiment, laboratory cooking and bleaching trials, using conventional small-diameter Scots pine pulpwood as a reference. These trials showed that undelimbed Scots pine sections can be processed in favourable conditions as a blend with conventional small-diameter pulpwood without reducing the pulp quality. However, fibre losses at various phases of the process may increase when using undelimbed material. In the economic evaluation, both pulp production and wood procurement costs were considered, using the relative wood paying capability of a kraft pulp mill as a determinant. The calculations were made for three Scots pine first-thinning stands with the breast-height diameter of the removal (6 12 cm) as the main distinctive factor. The supply chains included in the comparison were based on cut-to-length harvesting, whole-tree harvesting and bundle harvesting (whole-tree bundling). With the current ratio of pulp and energy prices, the wood paying capability declines with an increase in the proportion of the energy fraction of the raw material. The supply system based on the cut-to-length method was the most efficient option, resulting in the highest residual value at stump in most cases. A decline in the pulp price and an increase in the energy price improved the competitiveness of the whole-tree systems. With short truck transportation distances and low pulp prices, however, the harvesting of loose whole trees can result in higher residual value at stump in small-diameter stands. While savings in transportation costs did not compensate for the high cutting and compaction costs by the second prototype of the bundle harvester, an increase in transportation distances improved its competitiveness. Since harvesting undelimbed assortments increases nutrient export from the site, which can affect soil productivity, the whole-tree alternatives included in the present study cannot be recommended on infertile peatlands and mineral soils. The harvesting of loose whole trees or bundled whole trees implies a reduction in protective logging residues and an increase in site traffic or payloads. These factors increase the risk of soil damage, especially on peat soils with poor bearing capacity. Within the wood procurement parameters which were examined, the CO2 emissions of the supply systems varied from 13 27 kg m3. Compaction of whole trees into bundles reduced emissions from transportation by 30 39%, but these reductions were insufficient to compensate for the increased emissions from cutting and compaction.

One of the most important dynamic properties required in the design of machine foundations is the stiffness or spring constant of the supporting soil. For a layered soil system, the stiffness obtained from an idealization of soils underneath as springs in series gives the same value of stiffness regardless of the location and extent of individual soil layers with respect to the base of the foundation. This paper aims to develop the importance of the relative positioning of soil layers and their thickness beneath the foundation. A simple and approximate procedure called the weighted average method has been proposed to obtain the equivalent stiffness of a layered soil system knowing the individual values of the layers, their relative position with respect to foundation base, and their thicknesses. The theoretically estimated values from the weighted average method are compared with those obtained by conducting field vibration tests using a square footing over different two- and three-layered systems and are found to be very good. The tests were conducted over a range of static and dynamic loads using three different materials. The results are also compared with the existing methods available in the literature.

Equilibrium sediment volume tests are conducted on field soils to classify them based on their degree of expansivity and/or to predict the liquid limit of soils. The present technical paper examines different equilibrium sediment volume tests, critically evaluating each of them. It discusses the settling behavior of fine-grained soils during the soil sediment formation to evolve a rationale for conducting the latest version of equilibrium sediment volume test. Probable limitations of equilibrium sediment volume test and the possible solution to overcome the same have also been indicated.

Naudanlihan jalostusketjun päästöt olivat 1240 g CO2-ekv/lihakilo.

Exact travelling wave solutions for hydromagnetic waves in an exponentially stratified incompressible medium are obtained. With the help of two integrals it becomes possible to reduce the system of seven nonlinear PDE's to a second order nonlinear ODE which describes an one dimensional harmonic oscillator with a nonlinear friction term. This equation is studied in detail in the phase plane. The travelling waves are periodic only when they propagate either horizontally or vertically. The reduced second order nonlinear differential equation describing the travelling waves in inhomogeneous conducting media has rather ubiquitous nature in that it also appears in other geophysical systems such as internal waves, Rossby waves and topographic Rossby waves in the ocean.

The steady laminar compressible boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting fluid in the stagnation region of a sphere with an applied magnetic field has been studied. The effects of the induced magnetic field, mass transfer, and viscous dissipation have been taken into account. Both isothermal and adiabatic wall conditions have been considered. The governing equations have been solved numerically using a shooting method. The skin friction and heat transfer are found to be strongly affected by the magnetic field, mass transfer, wall temperature and Mach number. It is found that the magnetic field reduces the heat transfer. This is a significant result which can be used in controlling the heat transfer rate. The boundary layer solutions break down as the magnetic parameter tends to a certain critical value.

The nonaxisymmetric unsteady motion produced by a buoyancy-induced cross-flow of an electrically conducting fluid over an infinite rotating disk in a vertical plane and in the presence of an applied magnetic field normal to the disk has been studied. Both constant wall and constant heat flux conditions have been considered. It has been found that if the angular velocity of the disk and the applied magnetic field squared vary inversely as a linear function of time (i.e. as (1??t*)?1, the governing Navier-Stokes equation and the energy equation admit a locally self-similar solution. The resulting set of ordinary differential equations has been solved using a shooting method with a generalized Newton's correction procedure for guessed boundary conditions. It is observed that in a certain region near the disk the buoyancy induced cross-flow dominates the primary von Karman flow. The shear stresses induced by the cross-flow are found to be more than these of the primary flow and they increase with magnetic parameter or the parameter ? characterizing the unsteadiness. The velocity profiles in the x- and y-directions for the primary flow at any two values of the unsteady parameter ? cross each other towards the edge of the boundary layer. The heat transfer increases with the Prandtl number but reduces with the magnetic parameter.

Polyelectrolyte complexes of polyaniline with both strong and weak anionic polyelectrolytes have been prepared. It has been found that the swellability of the complexes depends on the charge content of polyaniline, i.e., on the intercrosslinking between polyaniline (which is a polyacation) and polyanions. It has also been observed that polyaniline in the polyaniline-polystresulfonic acid complex exists in the conducting state when equilibrated with basic pH in aqueous media of moderately high ionic strength.

We have consider ed the transient motion of art electrically conducting viscous compressible fluid which is in contact with an insulated infinite disk. The initial motion is considered to be due to the uniform rotation of the disk in an otherwise stationary fluid or due to the uniform rigid rotation of the fluid over a stationary disk. Different cases of transient motion due to finite impulse imparted either to the disk or to the distant fluid have been investigated. Effects of the imposed axial magnetic field and the disk temperature on the transient flow are included. The nonlinear partial differential equations governing the motion are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme along with the Newton's linearisation technique.

A finite element method (FEM)-based study has been carried out for the design of flat microtensile samples to evaluate tensile properties of Pt-aluminide (PtAl) bond coats. The critical dimensions of the sample have been determined using a two-dimensional elastic stress analysis. In the present testing scheme, the ratio of the dimensions of the holding length to the fillet radius of the sample was found important to achieve failure within the gage length. The effect of gage length and grip head length also has been examined. The simulation predictions have been experimentally verified by conducting microtensile test of an actual PtAl bond coat at room temperature. The sample design and testing scheme suggested in this study have also been found suitable for evaluation of tensile properties at high temperature. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of growth texture on the magnetostriction of ternary Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.95 was studied by conducting unidirectional solidification experiments using a zoning set-up. Detailed texture evolutions were studied using X-ray diffraction on samples obtained by varying growth rates from 18 to 72 cm/h, under a temperature gradient of 100 degrees C/cm. The estimated texture co-efficient and pole figures of the samples indicate that during the onset of the solidification, < 110 > and < 331 >/'rotated < 110 >' texture components nucleate and grow in all the samples. However, as the solidification progresses, < 112 > texture component becomes dominant at higher growth rate. This results in an improvement of magnetostriction from 1000 to 1300 microstrains for samples grown at growth rates of 18 and 72 cm/h respectively. The transition of preferred growth direction occurs through intermediate orientations < 123 >. An attempt has been made in this paper to explain the occurrence of different growth texture by considering the stability of growing interface, its planar packing fraction and atomic stacking sequence of several low index planes. Electrochemical reduction of exfoliated graphene oxide, prepared from pre-exfoliated graphite, in acetamide-urea-ammonium nitrate ternary eutectic melt results in few layer-graphene thin films. Negatively charged exfoliated graphene oxide is attached to positively charged cystamine monolyer self-assembled on a gold surface. Electrochemical reduction of the oriented graphene oxide film is carried out in a room temperature, ternary molten electrolyte. The reduced film is characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), conductive AFM, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Ternary eutectic melt is found to be a suitable medium for the regulated reduction of graphene oxide to reduced graphene oxide-based sheets on conducting surfaces. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The worldwide research in nanoelectronics is motivated by the fact that scaling of MOSFETs by conventional top down approach will not continue for ever due to fundamental limits imposed by physics even if it is delayed for some more years. The research community in this domain has largely become multidisciplinary trying to discover novel transistor structures built with novel materials so that semiconductor industry can continue to follow its projected roadmap. However, setting up and running a nanoelectronics facility for research is hugely expensive. Therefore it is a common model to setup a central networked facility that can be shared with large number of users across the research community. The Centres for Excellence in Nanoelectronics (CEN) at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) are such central networked facilities setup with funding of about USD 20 million from the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Government of India, in 2005. Indian Nanoelectronics Users Program (INUP) is a missionary program not only to spread awareness and provide training in nanoelectronics but also to provide easy access to the latest facilities at CEN in IISc and at IITB for the wider nanoelectronics research community in India. This program, also funded by MCIT, aims to train researchers by conducting workshops, hands-on training programs, and providing access to CEN facilities. This is a unique program aiming to expedite nanoelectronics research in the country, as the funding for projects required for projects proposed by researchers from around India has prior financial approval from the government and requires only technical approval by the IISc/ IITB team. This paper discusses the objectives of INUP, gives brief descriptions of CEN facilities, the training programs conducted by INUP and list various research activities currently under way in the program.

In ceramics, dopants offer the possibility of higher creep rates by enhancing diffusion. The present study examines the potential for high strain rate superplasticity in a TiO2 doped zirconia, by conducting creep experiments together with microstructural characterization. It is shown that both pure and doped zirconia exhibit transitions in creep behaviour from Coble diffusion creep with n similar to 1 to an interface controlled process with n similar to 2. Doping with TiO2 enhances the creep rate by over an order of magnitude. There is evidence of substantial grain boundary sliding, consistent with diffusion creep.
