This thesis is a step forward in understanding the growth of graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms, by annealing Silicon Carbide (SiC) thin films in Ultra High Vacuum. The research lead to the discovery that the details of the transition from SiC to graphene, providing, for the first time, atomic resolution images of the different stages of the transformation and a model of the growth. The epitaxial growth of graphene developed by this study is a cost effective procedure to obtain this material directly on Si chips, a breakthrough for the future electronic industry.

Pollution on electrical insulators is one of the greatest causes of failure of substations subjected to high levels of salinity and environmental pollution. Considering leakage current as the main indicator of pollution on insulators, this paper focus on establishing the effect of the environmental conditions on the risk of failure due to pollution on insulators and determining the significant change in the magnitude of the pollution on the insulators during dry and humid periods. Hierarchical segmentation analysis was used to establish the effect of environmental conditions on the risk of failure due to pollution on insulators. The Kruskal-Wallis test was utilized to determine the significant changes in the magnitude of the pollution due to climate periods. An important result was the discovery that leakage current was more common on insulators during dry periods than humid ones. There was also a higher risk of failure due to pollution during dry periods. During the humid period, various temperatures and wind directions produced a small change in the risk of failure. As a technical result, operators of electrical substations can now identify the cause of an increase in risk of failure due to pollution in the area. The research provides a contribution towards the behaviour of the leakage current under conditions similar to those of the Colombian Caribbean coast and how they affect the risk of failure of the substation due to pollution.

A study of the Bi nanoline geometry on Si(0 0 1) has been performed using a combination of ab initio theoretical technique and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Our calculations demonstrate decisively that the recently proposed Haiku geometry is a lower energy configuration than any of the previously proposed line geometries. Furthermore, we have made comparisons between STM constant-current topographs of the lines and Tersoff–Haman STM simulations. Although the Haiku and the Miki geometries both reproduce the main features of the constant-current topographs, the simulated STM images of the Miki geometry have a dark stripe between the dimer rows that does not correspond well with experiment.

The registry of bismuth dimers, integral components of the bismuth nanoline on Si(001), is examined. In contrast to the currently accepted view, the bismuth dimers are found to be in registry with the two-dimensional lattice created by the silicon dimers. The consequences of this finding are briefly explored.

In this article, we present the detailed investigations on platinum related midgap state corresponding to E-c -0.52 eV probed by deep level transient spectroscopy. By irradiating the platinum doped samples with high-energy (1.1 MeV) gamma rays, we observed that the concentration of the midgap state increases and follows a square dependence with irradiation dose. However, the concentration of the acceptor corresponding to E-c -20.28 eV remained constant. Furthermore, from the studies on passivation by atomic hydrogen and thermal reactivation, we noticed that the E-c -0.52 eV level reappears in the samples annealed at high temperatures after hydrogenation. The interaction of platinum with various defects and the qualitative arguments based on the law of mass action suggest that the platinum related midgap defect might possibly correspond to the interstitial platinum-divacancy complex (V-Pt-V).

A quantum-spin-Hall (QSH) state was achieved experimentally, albeit at a low critical temperature because of the narrow band gap of the bulk material. Twodimensional topological insulators are critically important for realizing novel topological applications. Using density functional theory (DFT), we demonstrated that hydrogenated GaBi bilayers (HGaBi) form a stable topological insulator with a large nontrivial band gap of 0.320 eV, based on the state-of-the-art hybrid functional method, which is implementable for achieving QSH states at room temperature. The nontrivial topological property of the HGaBi lattice can also be confirmed from the appearance of gapless edge states in the nanoribbon structure. Our results provide a versatile platform for hosting nontrivial topological states usable for important nanoelectronic device applications.

The theoretical optimization of the design parametersN A ,N D andW P has been done for efficient operation of Au-p-n Si solar cell including thermionic field emission, dependence of lifetime and mobility on impurity concentrations, dependence of absorption coefficient on wavelength, variation of barrier height and hence the optimum thickness ofp region with illumination. The optimized design parametersN D =5×1020 m−3,N A =3×1024 m−3 andW P =11.8 nm yield efficiencyη=17.1% (AM0) andη=19.6% (AM1). These are reduced to 14.9% and 17.1% respectively if the metal layer series resistance and transmittance with ZnS antireflection coating are included. A practical value ofW P =97.0 nm gives an efficiency of 12.2% (AM1).

Stable solid adducts of SiF4 with the following aminocyclophosphazenes have been synthesized : N3P3(NHCH2CH2NH)(NMe2)4(,1 ) ; N3P3(NHCH2CH2NH)C14(,2 ) ; N3P3(NMe2)4C12(,3 ) ; N3P3(NHMe),,(4) ; N3P3(NMe2),, (5) ; N,P,(NHMe),, (6) ; N4P4(NMe2),, (7) ; and N,P,(NHBu'),, (8). They have been characterized by elemental analysis, i.r., and n.m.r. ( H, 31 P, and 19F) spectroscopy. The composition of the adducts varies depending on the ring size and also on the nature of the substituents on the phosphorus. The number of SiF4 molecules accommodated by the ligands is larger when the ring size is large, while it is less when the ligands contain chlorine. Except in the cases of ligands (1) and (2), bonding is through the ring nitrogens. With (I), both exocyclic nitrogen and ring nitrogen atoms, and with (2) only exocyclic nitrogen atoms, participate in co-ordination. In these two cases the silicon is six-co-ordinated, while in the other cases it is five-co-ordinated.

Rainfall variability is a challenge to sustainable and pro. table cattle production in northern Australia. Strategies recommended to manage for rainfall variability, like light or variable stocking, are not widely adopted. This is due partly to the perception that sustainability and profitability are incompatible. A large, long-term grazing trial was initiated in 1997 in north Queensland, Australia, to test the effect of different grazing strategies on cattle production. These strategies are: (i) constant light stocking (LSR) at long-term carrying capacity (LTCC); (ii) constant heavy stocking (HSR) at twice LTCC; (iii) rotational wet-season spelling (R/Spell) at 1.5 LTCC; (iv) variable stocking (VAR), with stocking rates adjusted in May based on available pasture; and (v) a Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) variable strategy, with stocking rates adjusted in November, based on available pasture and SOI seasonal forecasts. Animal performance varied markedly over the 10 years for which data is presented, due to pronounced differences in rainfall and pasture availability. Nonetheless, lighter stocking at or about LTCC consistently gave the best individual liveweight gain (LWG), condition score and skeletal growth; mean LWG per annum was thus highest in the LSR (113 kg), intermediate in the R/Spell (104 kg) and lowest in the HSR(86 kg). MeanLWGwas 106 kg in the VAR and 103 kg in the SOI but, in all years, the relative performance of these strategies was dependent upon the stocking rate applied. After 2 years on the trial, steers from lightly stocked strategies were 60-100 kg heavier and received appreciable carcass price premiums at the meatworks compared to those under heavy stocking. In contrast, LWG per unit area was greatest at stocking rates of about twice LTCC; mean LWG/ha was thus greatest in the HSR (21 kg/ha), but this strategy required drought feeding in four of the 10 years and was unsustainable. Although LWG/ha was lower in the LSR (mean 14 kg/ha), or in strategies that reduced stocking rates in dry years like the VAR(mean 18 kg/ha) and SOI (mean 17 kg/ha), these strategies did not require drought feeding and appeared sustainable. The R/Spell strategy (mean 16 kg/ha) was compromised by an ill-timed fire, but also performed satisfactorily. The present results provide important evidence challenging the assumption that sustainable management in a variable environment is unprofitable. Further research is required to fully quantify the long-term effects of these strategies on land condition and profitability and to extrapolate the results to breeder performance at the property level.

This study aims to examine the operations and significance of the Klemetti Institute (Klemetti-Opisto) as a developer of Finnish music culture from 1953 to 1968 during the term of office of the Institute s founder and first director, Arvo Vainio. The Klemetti Institute was originally established as a choir institute, but soon expanded to offer a wide range of music courses. In addition to providing courses for choir leaders and singers, the Institute began its orchestral activities as early as the mid-1950s. Other courses included ear training seminars as well as courses for young people s music instructors and in playing the kantele (a Finnish string instrument) and solo singing. More than 20 types of courses were offered over the 16-year period. The Klemetti Institute s courses were incorporated into the folk high school courses offered by the Orivesi Institute (Oriveden Opisto) and were organised during the summer months of June and July. In addition to funding based on the Folk High School Act, financial assistance was obtained from various foundations and funds, such as the Wihuri Foundation. This study is linked to the context of historical research. I examine the Klemetti Institute s operations chronologically, classifying instruction into different course types, and analyse concert activities primarily in the section on the Institute s student union. The source material includes the Klemetti Institute archives, which consist of Arvo Vainio s correspondence, student applications, register books and cards, journals and student lists, course albums and nearly all issues of the Klemettiläinen bulletin. In addition, I have used focused interviews and essays to obtain extensive data from students and teachers. I concentrate on primary school teachers, who accounted for the majority of course participants. A total of more than 2,300 people participated in the courses, nearly half of whom took courses during at least two summers. Primary school teachers accounted for 50% to 70% of the participants in most courses and constituted an even larger share of participants in some courses, such as the music instructor course. The Klemetti Institute contributed to the expansion throughout Finland of a new ideal for choral tone. This involved delicate singing which strives for tonal purity and expressiveness. Chamber choirs had been virtually unheard of in Finland, but the Klemetti Institute Chamber Choir popularised them. Chamber choirs are characterised by an extensive singing repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the present. As the name suggests, chamber choirs were originally rather small mixed choirs. Delicate singing meant the avoidance of extensive vibrato techniques and strong, heavy forte sounds, which had previously been typical of Finnish choirs. Those opposing and shunning this new manner of singing called it ghost singing . The Klemetti Institute s teachers included Finland s most prominent pedagogues and artists. As the focused essays, or reminiscences as I call them, show, their significance for the students was central. I examine extensively the Klemetti Institute s enthusiastic atmosphere, which during the early years was characterised by what some writers described as a hunger for music . In addition to distributing a new tonal ideal and choir repertoire, the Klemetti Institute also distributed new methods of music education, thus affecting the music teaching of Finnish primary schools, in particular. The Orff approach, which included various instruments, became well known, although some of Orff s ideas, such as improvisation and physical exercise, were initially unfamiliar. More important than the Orff approach was the in-depth teaching at the Klemetti Institute of the Hungarian ear training method known as the Kodály method. Many course participants were among those launching specialist music classes in schools, and the method became the foundation for music teaching in many such schools. The Klemetti Institute was also a pioneer in organising orchestra camps for young people. The Klemetti Institute promoted Finnish music culture and played an important role in the continuing music education of primary school teachers. Electrically active deep levels related to nickel in silicon are studied under different diffusion conditions, quenching modes, and annealing conditions. The main nickel-related level is at Ev+0.32 eV. Levels at Ev+0.15 and Ev+0.54 eV are not related to nickel while those at Ev+0.50 and Ev+0.28 eV may be nickel related. Their concentrations depend on the quenching mode. There is no nickel-related level in the upper half of the band gap. The complicated annealing behavior of the main nickel-related level is explained on the basis of the formation and dissociation of a nickel-vacany complex. For the first time, we have fabricated and tested conductometric sensors based on oxidized liquid galinstan towards NO2 and NH3 gases at low operating temperatures. Galinstan based films on silicon substrates have been studied with two different loadings. Surface morphology of the films was investigated by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The sensor with higher galinstan loading showed a better sensitivity, which can be attributed to a higher surface area, as confirmed by SEM. At 100°C, a detection limit as low as 1 and 20 ppm was measured for NO2 and NH3, respectively.

Electrical properties of deep defects induced in n-silicon by -particles of about 10 MeV energy at a dose of 1014 and 1015 cm-2 are studied by DLTS. The levels at Ec -0.18 eV, Ec -0.26 eV, and Ec -0.48 eV are identified as A center, V2 (=/-) and V2 (-/0) on the basis of activation energy, electron capture cross section, and annealing behavior. Two other irradiation related levels at Ec -0.28 eV and Ec -0.51 eV could not be related to any known center.

Time-resolved electric field induced second harmonic generation technique was used to probe the carrier transients within double-layer pentacene-based MIM devices. Polyterpenol thin films fabricated from non-synthetic environmentally sustainable source were used as a blocking layer to assist in visualisation of single-species carrier transportation during charging and discharging under different bias conditions. Results demonstrated that carrier transients were comprised of charging on electrodes, followed by carrier injection and charging of the interface. Polyterpenol was demonstrated to be a sound blocking material and can therefore be effectively used for probing of double-layer devices using EFISHG.

The IR spectra of some LaNi1−xBxO3 (B = Cr, Fe, and Co) compounds having perovskite structure have been studied in the range 1000−300 cm−1. An investigation of the changes in the metal-oxygen stretching frequency as x → xc from the insulating side has been carried out. An important feature is that as x → xc the vibrational features in the infrared spectra disappear when the resistivity is not, vert, similar10−1 Ω cm which is of two orders of magnitude more than the value of varrho0 at which the temperature coefficient of resistance changes sign. Mössbauer studies on Fe-containing samples with various conductivities show that the isomer shift decreases as conductivity increases which is indicative of larger Fe---O overlap.
