A promising technique for the large-scale manufacture of micro-fluidic devices and photonic devices is hot embossing of polymers such as PMMA. Micro-embossing is a deformation process where the workpiece material is heated to permit easier material flow and then forced over a planar patterned tool. While there has been considerable, attention paid to process feasibility very little effort has been put into production issues such as process capability and eventual process control. In this paper, we present initial studies aimed at identifying the origins and magnitude of variability for embossing features at the micron scale in PMMA. Test parts with features ranging from 3.5- 630 µm wide and 0.9 µm deep were formed. Measurements at this scale proved very difficult, and only atomic force microscopy was able to provide resolution sufficient to identify process variations. It was found that standard deviations of widths at the 3-4 µm scale were on the order of 0.5 µm leading to a coefficient of variation as high as 13%. Clearly, the transition from test to manufacturing for this process will require understanding the causes of this variation and devising control methods to minimize its magnitude over all types of parts.

This work presents detailed numerical calculations of the dielectrophoretic force in octupolar traps designed for single-cell trapping. A trap with eight planar electrodes is studied for spherical and ellipsoidal particles using an indirect implementation of the boundary element method (BEM). Multipolar approximations of orders one to three are compared with the full Maxwell stress tensor (MST) calculation of the electrical force on spherical particles. Ellipsoidal particles are also studied, but in their case only the dipolar approximation is available for comparison with the MST solution. The results show that the full MST calculation is only required in the study of non-spherical particles.

This paper focuses on the problem of realizing a plane-to-plane virtual link between a camera attached to the end-effector of a robot and a planar object. In order to do the system independent to the object surface appearance, a structured light emitter is linked to the camera so that 4 laser pointers are projected onto the object. In a previous paper we showed that such a system has good performance and nice characteristics like partial decoupling near the desired state and robustness against misalignment of the emitter and the camera (J. Pages et al., 2004). However, no analytical results concerning the global asymptotic stability of the system were obtained due to the high complexity of the visual features utilized. In this work we present a better set of visual features which improves the properties of the features in (J. Pages et al., 2004) and for which it is possible to prove the global asymptotic stability

In this paper we face the problem of positioning a camera attached to the end-effector of a robotic manipulator so that it gets parallel to a planar object. Such problem has been treated for a long time in visual servoing. Our approach is based on linking to the camera several laser pointers so that its configuration is aimed to produce a suitable set of visual features. The aim of using structured light is not only for easing the image processing and to allow low-textured objects to be treated, but also for producing a control scheme with nice properties like decoupling, stability, well conditioning and good camera trajectory

In this paper we describe a system for underwater navigation with AUVs in partially structured environments, such as dams, ports or marine platforms. An imaging sonar is used to obtain information about the location of planar structures present in such environments. This information is incorporated into a feature-based SLAM algorithm in a two step process: (I) the full 360deg sonar scan is undistorted (to compensate for vehicle motion), thresholded and segmented to determine which measurements correspond to planar environment features and which should be ignored; and (2) SLAM proceeds once the data association is obtained: both the vehicle motion and the measurements whose correct association has been previously determined are incorporated in the SLAM algorithm. This two step delayed SLAM process allows to robustly determine the feature and vehicle locations in the presence of large amounts of spurious or unrelated measurements that might correspond to boats, rocks, etc. Preliminary experiments show the viability of the proposed approach

This paper describes a navigation system for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in partially structured environments, such as dams, harbors, marinas or marine platforms. A mechanical scanning imaging sonar is used to obtain information about the location of planar structures present in such environments. A modified version of the Hough transform has been developed to extract line features, together with their uncertainty, from the continuous sonar dataflow. The information obtained is incorporated into a feature-based SLAM algorithm running an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Simultaneously, the AUV's position estimate is provided to the feature extraction algorithm to correct the distortions that the vehicle motion produces in the acoustic images. Experiments carried out in a marina located in the Costa Brava (Spain) with the Ictineu AUV show the viability of the proposed approach

Introducción: La evaluación de injertos vasculares de submucosa de intestino delgado para la regeneración de vasos sanguíneos ha producido una permeabilidad variable (0-100%) que ha sido concurrente con la variabilidad en las técnicas de fabricación. Metodología: Investigamos los efectos de fabricación en permeabilidad y regeneración en un diseño experimental de 22factorial que combino: 1) preservación (P) o remoción (R) de la capa estratum compactum del intestino, y 2) deshidratada (D) o hidratada (H), dentro de cuatro grupos de estudio (PD, RD, PH, RH). Los injertos fueron implantados en las Arterias Carótidas de porcinos (ID 4.5mm, N=4, 7d). Permeabilidad, trombogenicidad, reacción inflamatoria, vascularización, infiltración de fibroblastos, perfil de polarización de macrófagos y fuerza tensil biaxial fueron evaluadas. Resultados: Todos los injertos PD permanecieron permeables (4/4), pero tuvieron escasa vascularización e infiltración de fibroblastos. El grupo RD permaneció permeable (4/4), presentó una extensa vascularización e infiltración de fibroblastos, y el mayor número del fenotipo de macrófagos (M2) asociado a regeneración. El grupo RH presentó menor permeabilidad (3/4), una extensa vascularización e infiltración de fibroblastos, y un perfil dominante de M2. El grupo PH presentó el menor grado de permeabilidad, y a pesar de mayor infiltración celular que PD, exhibió un fenotipo de macrófagos dominante adverso. La elasticidad de los injertos R evolucionó de una manera similar a las Carótidas nativas (particularmente RD, mientras que los injertos P mantuvieron su rigidez inicial. Discusión: Concluimos que los parámetros de fabricación afectan drásticamente los resultados, siendo los injertos RD los que arrojaron mejores resultados.

Introducción: La DSA es el método de elección para el seguimiento de pacientes con aneurismas intracraneales embolizados; esta se puede asociar a complicaciones incapacitantes o mortales. La MRA se ha propuesto como método alternativo por menor costo y menos morbi-mortalidad, aunque su desempeño diagnóstico permanece en discusión debido al desarrollo de nuevos protocolos, resonadores más potentes y nuevas aplicaciones de la DSA. Metodología: Exploramos la literatura hasta la actualidad y comparamos el desempeño diagnóstico de la MRA con la DSA para detectar flujo residual posterior a la embolización terapéutica de aneurismas intracraneales. Realizamos una revisión sistemática de la literatura y meta-análisis basados en 34 artículos detectados en la búsqueda que incluyó las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus, ScIELO y BVS. Resultados: La TOF-MRA demostró sensibilidad de 86.8% (84.3%-89.1%) y especificidad de 91.2% (89%-93.1%); la SROC para TOF-MRA demostró un AUC de 0.95. El desempeño de la CE-MRA demostró sensibilidad de 88.1% (84.6%-91.1%) y especificidad de 89.1% (85.7%-91.9%); la SROC presentó una AUC de 0.93. El análisis estratificado por potencia del resonador encontró que la TOF-MRA tiene mejor desempeño con el resonador de 3T, aunque no es estadísticamente significativo. La concordancia interobservador con TOF-MRA y CE-MRA fue moderada a muy buena. Discusión: El desempeño diagnóstico de la MRA en el seguimiento de aneurismas intracraneales embolizados demostró ser bueno, con sensibilidad mayor a 84%, siendo ligeramente mejor con TOF-MRA, sin lograr reemplazar la DSA. Sin embargo, los resultados deben ser evaluados con precaución por la heterogeneidad de los resultados de los estudios incluidos. Introducción: El diagnóstico de osteomielitis esternal post-esternotomía resulta difícil empleando síntomas clínicos o de laboratorio y las imágenes morfológicas orientan a sospecha más que al diagnóstico. Un diagnóstico precoz ofrece calidad de vida y el mejor tratamiento para reducir una mortalidad que oscila entre 14% y 47%. La gammagrafía con leucocitos marcados ofrece el mejor rendimiento diagnóstico para infecciones y se destaca como el patrón de oro diagnóstico. Objetivo: Identificar el desempeño y utilidad de la gammagrafía con leucocitos autólogos marcados con 99mTc-HMPAO en los estudios realizados para la evaluación de osteomielitis esternal. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo de prueba diagnóstica en la Fundación Cardioinfantil de Bogotá entre enero/2010 y mayo/2015 evaluando gammagrafías con leucocitos marcados ante la sospecha de osteomielitis posterior a esternotomía. Resultados: Se evaluaron 52 pacientes, en los que la gammagrafía con leucocitos mostró 23 pacientes (44,2%) con osteomielitis esternal, logrando una sensibilidad y especificidad del 88,46% y 100% respectivamente. El valor predictivo positivo fue de 100%, y el valor predictivo negativo fue de 89,66%. El impacto de una prueba negativa no modificó el manejo médico inicial en el 93% de los casos mientras que una prueba positiva lo modificó en el 83%. Conclusiones: La gammagrafía con leucocitos autólogos radiomarcados con 99mTc-HMPAO continúa siendo el patrón de oro de referencia no invasiva para el diagnóstico de osteomielitis, y en el caso de osteomielitis esternal se convierte en la prueba de elección pertinente en la selección de pacientes que ameritan una re-intervención quirúrgica.

Describes a method to code a decimated model of an isosurface on an octree representation while maintaining volume data if it is needed. The proposed technique is based on grouping the marching cubes (MC) patterns into five configurations according the topology and the number of planes of the surface that are contained in a cell. Moreover, the discrete number of planes on which the surface lays is fixed. Starting from a complete volume octree, with the isosurface codified at terminal nodes according to the new configuration, a bottom-up strategy is taken for merging cells. Such a strategy allows one to implicitly represent co-planar faces in the upper octree levels without introducing any error. At the end of this merging process, when it is required, a reconstruction strategy is applied to generate the surface contained in the octree intersected leaves. Some examples with medical data demonstrate that a reduction of up to 50% in the number of polygons can be achieved

Restricted Hartree-Fock 6-31G calculations of electrical and mechanical anharmonicity contributions to the longitudinal vibrational second hyperpolarizability have been carried out for eight homologous series of conjugated oligomers - polyacetylene, polyyne, polydiacetylene, polybutatriene, polycumulene, polysilane, polymethineimine, and polypyrrole. To draw conclusions about the limiting infinite polymer behavior, chains containing up to 12 heavy atoms along the conjugated backbone were considered. In general, the vibrational hyperpolarizabilities are substantial in comparison with their static electronic counterparts for the dc-Kerr and degenerate four-wave mixing processes (as well as for static fields) but not for electric field-induced second harmonic generation or third harmonic generation. Anharmonicity terms due to nuclear relaxation are important for the dc-Kerr effect (and for the static hyperpolarizability) in the σ-conjugated polymer, polysilane, as well as the nonplanar π systems polymethineimine and polypyrrole. Restricting polypyrrole to be planar, as it is in the crystal phase, causes these anharmonic terms to become negligible. When the same restriction is applied to polymethineimine the effect is reduced but remains quantitatively significant due to the first-order contribution. We conclude that anharmonicity associated with nuclear relaxation can be ignored, for semiquantitative purposes, in planar π-conjugated polymers. The role of zero-point vibrational averaging remains to be evaluated

In this work, the aromatic fluctuation index (FLU) that describes the fluctuation of electronic charge between adjacent atoms in a given ring is introduced as a new aromaticity measure. This new electronic criterion of aromaticity is based on the fact that aromaticity is related to the cyclic delocalized circulation of π electrons. It is defined not only considering the amount of electron sharing between contiguous atoms, which should be substantial in aromatic molecules, but also taking into account the similarity of electron sharing between adjacent atoms. For a series of rings in 15 planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, we have found that, in general, FLU is strongly correlated with other widely used indicators of local aromaticity, such as the harmonic-oscillator model of aromaticity, the nucleus independent chemical shift, and the para-delocalization index (PDI). In contrast to PDI, the FLU index can be applied to study the aromaticity of rings with any number of members and it can be used to analyze both the local and global aromatic character of rings and molecules

We compute families of symmetric periodic horseshoe orbits in the restricted three-body problem. Both the planar and three-dimensional cases are considered and several families are found.We describe how these families are organized as well as the behavior along and among the families of parameters such as the Jacobi constant or the eccentricity. We also determine the stability properties of individual orbits along the families. Interestingly, we find stable horseshoe-shaped orbit up to the quite high inclination of 17◦
